The Bus Massacre
The story begins with two buses full of female students on their way to school. Mitsuko, a student who enjoys writing, is on one of the buses. Her friends tease her for always writing instead of enjoying herself. When Mitsuko bends down to pick up a fallen pen, a powerful, invisible force suddenly slices both buses in half, killing all the girls except Mitsuko, who was spared because she bent down. Realizing the danger, she flees in terror as the wind-like force chases her.
Running and Identity Shift
As Mitsuko runs, she encounters more groups of girls, but the invisible force continues to bisect them. She tries to warn them, but it's often too late. Reaching a river filled with bisected bodies, she changes into the clothes of a dead girl. She arrives at a different school with unfamiliar uniforms. There, she meets her best friend, but she is disoriented and questions the reality of the situation. A strong wind frightens her, and she tells her friend about the massacre, but her friend dismisses it as just the wind.
The Mirror World
Mitsuko's best friend tries to reassure her that everything is normal, suggesting her fears are just a dream. They, along with two other friends, plan to leave the class, but are interrupted by their teacher. They escape to a lake, where one of the girls proposes the idea of a "mirror world" where the opposite of reality is true. To test this, she throws a stone into the pond, and a crocodile emerges, eating her. The remaining girls find a bed and start playing with a pillow. Two girls dressed as brides watch them. One of the friends suggests they can change their fate by doing something impossible in the other world.
School Shooting and Escape
The girls return to school for their next lecture. When Mitsuko bends to pick up the pillow, their teacher starts shooting at the class. Mitsuko narrowly escapes again. The teacher confronts her, declaring she is destined to die. Two girls try to help Mitsuko escape, but another teacher kills them. Mitsuko flees with the surviving students, but the teachers open fire, and the wind cuts them down, leaving Mitsuko alone once more.
The Wedding and the Pig Groom
Mitsuko seeks refuge at a police station, but the policewoman points out she's not wearing school clothes. Looking in a mirror, Mitsuko sees she has transformed and is called by a different name. She is about to get married, and the policewoman escorts her to the wedding. At the church, her best friend tells her they are under someone's control and to remain silent. As she walks to the ceremony, the other girls mock her. In place of her groom, she finds a coffin, from which a large pig emerges. Terrified, Mitsuko attacks the pig with a broken bottle, and she and her best friend flee.
The Race and the Desolate Place
Running away, Mitsuko looks in another mirror and transforms again. She finds herself at a race, where other girls encourage her to run. As she runs, she sees her dead friends and the pig and women from the church coming towards her. Some girls urge her to escape this world. Mitsuko runs to a desolate, dark place where students in uniforms appear, claiming they are dead and will kill her.
Breaking Free
Mitsuko's best friend arrives, kills one of the girls, and takes Mitsuko away. She tells Mitsuko to call out her name, which restores her original form. Her best friend asks Mitsuko to pull a wire attached to her hand so she can leave this world. Despite her fear, Mitsuko pulls the wire, causing her friend's body to split in two. Mitsuko then sees a gate and enters the human world, where she sees posters of herself. A boy tells her she is in the future, and she faints.
The Game Creator
When Mitsuko regains consciousness, she sees an old man playing a game featuring her character. The old man reveals he created the game using her DNA and controls her. He tells her she was killed long ago but he recreated her. Mitsuko realizes it's a game and hopes to return to her world. The old man urges her to complete the last level. Remembering her friend's words about doing something impossible, she strangles the man and stabs him with his stick, killing him.
The Real World
By defying the game's constraints, Mitsuko changes her destiny. Although she was dead in the game, she is still alive in the real world. Other versions of Mitsuko's character in the game also kill themselves. Finally, Mitsuko is shown lying in a snowy area, having returned to her real world.
