Hera and Echo
Hera, the queen of the gods, is being entertained by Echo, a mountain nymph known for her captivating stories. Unbeknownst to Hera, Echo is distracting her while Zeus, Hera's husband, is with other nymphs. When Hera discovers the deception, she punishes Echo by taking away her ability to speak her own thoughts, only allowing her to repeat the last words of others. This curse makes Echo's conversations dull, leading to her isolation and despair.
Narcissus's Rejection
Echo encounters Narcissus, the beautiful son of a river god and a water nymph, while he is hunting. A prophecy stated that Narcissus would live long only if he never truly knew himself. Narcissus, known for his beauty and pride, has many admirers but rejects them all, leaving a trail of broken hearts. Echo, unable to initiate a conversation due to her curse, follows Narcissus, eventually revealing herself by repeating his words. Narcissus rejects her harshly, stating he would rather die than be loved by her, causing Echo to retreat into a cave, where she fades away until only her voice remains, echoing in empty places.
Nemesis's Retribution
Ameinias, another young man rejected by Narcissus, prays to Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, asking that Narcissus experience the pain of love. Nemesis, witnessing Echo's fate, decides to grant Ameinias's wish. She leads Narcissus to a clear pool where he sees his own reflection for the first time with clarity. He becomes completely enamored with his image, spending days gazing at it.
Narcissus's Fate
Narcissus remains fixated on his reflection, unable to eat or drink, and slowly wastes away. He reaches out to his reflection, but it disappears when he tries to embrace it, causing him immense agony from unrequited love. Eventually, his legs become rooted to the ground, and he transforms into a white and yellow flower, forever bending towards its reflection, which is then named narcissus.
