00 Hello and welcome back to AI for seniors, the series where I show you how you can use AI in your daily life or for work and we're going to take it super slow. We're only going to learn what we really need to know and we're going to have some fun doing it. In this video, I'm going to show you how you can create and edit images [music] with AI and it's going to be a really really nice one. I'm very excited for this. So let's get right into it. Just to get started, who am I? My name is Kurosh. I built an accessibility tool for my dad and a lot of its users are older people. So I get to speak to older people on a daily basis and I just realized that there's not enough good educational material out there for how you can use this crazy new technology. I personally use AI every
47 single day. So I am essentially just taking my knowledge and giving it to you in a very simple digestible way. So that's me over here and this is my cat Romeo and he's going to show up a couple more times. [music] So today I will show you how you can create and edit images with AI. We're going to be creating completely new images and we're also going to take old photos and change them up completely. Then I will teach you a little bit around the how AI creates images [music] and finally I'm going to show you how to write great instructions for the AI so it can create the great picture that you wanted to create. In the last two videos we talked about what AI is in general and we also talked
35 about how you can use chat GPT which is the most used AI app out there. If you haven't watched those videos, go give them a look but you do not need to know what happened in there to understand today's lesson. [music] So let's get right into it. All right, so just as a teaser, let me show you some pictures that I created. Here's a picture of Romeo, my cat, editing a YouTube video of himself. >> [music] >> Here in the middle is a picture of my grandparents that I edited. And over here we have a picture of me teaching AI to a class full of Romeos and one of them has their hand raised. Let's just get started with creating our own image first before we dive into anything else.
21 So, the first step is to go to ChatGPT, very large AI app. And you can do that by going to your browser and just typing in chat.com. [music] So, let us do that. chat.com So, if you have not created an account yet with ChatGPT, in my second video I show you how you can do that and I also show you how you can set up your settings so the AI and the company doesn't use your private data for anything that you don't want it to use your data for. So, but to create an image the very first thing that we have to do is to click into this little text field here and start our instruction
07 with create an image. All right? For the AI to know that you want an [music] image, you have to tell it, "Hey, create an image." Now, let's come up with a very fun image that we can start with. Create an image of my cat Romeo who is a Russian Blue [music] and he's a captain on a ship and he's currently fighting a storm and the style should be cartoonish. And once you have your instruction in here for the picture that you want to have, just click enter or on this button to send. Now, as you saw, I didn't actually type this out. I used my own dictation app uh just because [music] I prefer to just dictate and with
52 pictures specifically, you need to send longer prompts. But anyway, [music] creating the picture can take a little while, so I'm just going to fast forward until that [music] is done. All right, the picture is done. We now have it here. Romeo is a captain on a ship. He's fighting a storm, and as you can see, it's in the style of a cartoon. So, [music] that's basically it. If you want to stop the video here, go for it, but now we're going to dive deeper into [music] a lot of other cool things that we can do with AI when we want to create images. [music] So, let's go back to the pictures that I created with a little bit more information. So, this first picture of Romeo editing a YouTube video is actually a completely new picture. If I
40 go to ChatGPT, and I show you the chat that I had where we created this image, you can see that just like in our example just now, I only sent a prompt, an instruction, and the AI went ahead and it created this completely new image. All right? So, the first [music] thing that you can do is create completely new images, but I think the real power lies in editing existing images. So, here we have this picture of my grandparents. [music] Let's see how I created this one because this isn't a completely new picture. What I did is I sent ChatGPT a picture that I already had, and I told it, "This
27 is an old picture of my grandparents. I want you to colorize [music] it." And it went ahead, and it did colorize it. And when I wanted it to be slightly different, I just asked for an edit. I said, "Please make it more vibrant. [music] The background colors are a bit dark. Make it lighter, and I want my grandparents to stand out more. And [music] that's when it gave me this final result. So, this isn't a completely new picture. This is an existing picture that I had and I asked the AI to edit it. Let me show you how you can do that, too. First, we need to start a new chat. And you can do that on ChatGPT by going to the sidebar and up here clicking on new chat. Then, you
12 need to upload the picture that you want the AI to edit. So, you can do that by going to this input field here and you can click on this plus button that allows you to add files. Now, here you have the add photos and files option and I'm going to go ahead and add a photo. Great. I'm going to add the photo that the AI generated of Romeo editing the YouTube video. And what I'm going to say now is change the style of this photo from realistic to a [music] cartoon style. And then I'm going to click on send. All right? So, the AI, rather than creating a completely new picture, it
57 takes a picture that I already have. It listens to my instruction and then it will generate me that new picture that I want. There was a little error here, which shouldn't happen, but hey, good that it is happening now. Usually, you can just click on retry and it will do the job for you. Let me just do that and then come back once the picture is done. All right, the AI is done and we now have this wonderful picture of Romeo over here with a more cartoon style than what it was before. All right, now let's get to our third example of the images that I created. So, over here we have this picture of me teaching a bunch of cats how to use AI. So, this picture is
43 [music] actually not brand new. Let me show you what I mean. So, over here we have my chat with ChatGPT where I asked it to create this picture. But rather than it creating a completely new picture without any example, I sent it [music] my profile picture, this picture that we had in the first slide of me and Romeo. And I said, "Take the guy in this picture and generate an image of this man sitting in a well-lit university classroom teaching a course about how to use AI for seniors." So, [music] I gave it a picture. I said, "Take an element from this picture, take my likeness, and create a new picture
29 with it." So, in summary, we have three different ways of generating images with AI. Firstly, we just give it an instruction without any existing picture, and we just say, "Create this completely brand new picture." Like we did over here. Secondly, we can take an existing image that we have, we give it to the AI, and we ask it to edit it. Do not create a completely new image, just edit our existing one. And finally, we can give it an old picture that we have, and we can say something like, "Take an element from this picture, such as a person or a location, and insert it into a new picture that you can create." All
15 right? So, if I were you, I would just pause the video right now, I would go to ChatGPT like we learned, I'd ask the AI to create a completely new picture, then I'd give it a picture that you already have by uploading it and asking [music] the AI to edit it, and finally, I would give it another existing picture, maybe of a friend of yours or of yourself, and ask the AI to just put you in from that picture into a different setting. Like, turn yourself into a Viking. Why not? >> [music] >> Once again, just to make absolutely sure that we understand how it works, we go to ChatGPT, we start a new chat by clicking on the new chat button here, and we upload a picture by clicking on
02 the plus, and then selecting add photos and files. And that's how you can upload it. But if that's all good, let's continue. All right. So, a super important part about getting the AI to create good pictures for you is to write >> [music] >> great instructions. So, just remember, and we talked a lot about this in the first video, >> [music] >> the AI is not human. It's just a computer program, but it is really, really helpful to think of it as a human because more instructions lead to better results. For example, if you ask your assistant to get you a coffee, they will have no idea what kind of coffee you want, if you want milk in there, sugar,
48 whatsoever, and they'll just get you back a coffee, and you will probably not like it because it's not to your liking. But if you tell your assistant, "Hey, [music] I want an Americano, and I want a splash of milk in there, and two sugars," then you will get back the coffee that you really want, and your assistant is going to be really happy that they didn't have to come up with your favorite coffee on the spot. So, more instructions always better. And additionally, with images, it's extra important because creating images is expensive for the AI. So, you will not get full freedom to create hundreds of images without >> [music] >> any AI app asking you to pay. So, the better results you can [music] get from the get-go by writing better
33 instructions, the happier you will be and so will your purse be. Now, let me show you how you can create better instructions. So, a bad prompt, and remember in the AI world prompt is an instruction, is just create a picture of a woman. Doesn't tell me much, right? Like a million different things that I could do. So, in this example, we have a subject, which is the picture of the woman, but we don't have any other details. So, the AI will just go ahead and do something random. But, let's look at a great prompt. Create a realistic photograph of a woman in her 60s drinking tea in a peaceful English garden. Show her sitting at a small table surrounded by pink flowers. Use
18 warm morning sunlight and a cheerful relaxed atmosphere. So, in this case, we have [music] the subject, who is a woman in her 60s, and she's drinking tea and a peaceful English garden. We have the style, which is realistic. We don't want a cartoon. We don't want anything that looks like animated. We want a realistic-looking picture. And we also have the setting, where the woman should be. Now, there's no like real rule to it, but you always will have a picture in mind, of course, before you ask the AI to create it for you. [music] So, just give more instructions. And if you are like me and you don't want to type everything out, use a dictation tool and then just speak
06 and speak and speak into the microphone, let out all of your thoughts, and everyone will be happier. You will get a better picture and the AI will just perform better for you. And there we go. So, I was just dictating the last few words that I was saying. No need to type, saves time. It's so much better. All right, let's move on. Let's finally talk about how pictures are created and what AI actually is. If you want to stop this video and go ahead and create pictures, I totally understand. You do not need to know this. So, but if you're interested in how these pictures are created and if you want to learn a little bit about some weird history of AI, just stay tuned for 2 more minutes. [music] So, as you probably know by now, AI is a computer program that usually
53 that does things that usually require human thinking. So, for example, answering questions, writing messages, finding information, or in our case, creating [music] pictures, right? It is trained on the entirety of the [music] internet, but ultimately, AI is just superpowered auto complete. [music] So, if you have ever written a text message on your phone, you will notice that if you type in the letters t r, it will give you like a little option to auto complete it with the word tree. Or if you just write the word how, then it will give you the options for the next words being are and is. Now, that's not because your phone knows what you want
38 to type, but because your phone knows that in general in the English language, whenever someone types in how, the next words are either are or is. So, it makes a prediction that this is the next best thing. And the AI is the same. If you ask it, "Hey, is the sky blue or what color is the sky?" It will say, "The sky is blue." Not because the robot knows that the sky is blue, but because every other time in the history of the internet when someone has asked this question of is the sky blue online, the next word was yes. So, it think of it as that. The AI is not thinking, [music]
24 it's just predicting what the next best thing to say is. If this is confusing, again, this really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. So, with pictures, it is quite similar. >> [music] >> So, when you ask the AI to create an image for you, firstly, it reads your instructions, and then from your instructions, [music] it looks at all of the information that it was trained with, and it finds the pictures that fit your description. So, the pictures it already has access to and its training material that kind of fit your description. So, a very simple example for that is if I go on to Google, and if
11 I type in Impressionist painting, let's imagine I want the AI to create an Impressionist painting, then it will create a painting that looks like this. It doesn't know what Impressionism is, it just knows that these are the pictures that are related to Impressionism, right? It doesn't make up the art on the spot, it accesses its training material and knows that, "Okay, if I create a picture, it kind of has to look like this because this is in my training data." Now, then it goes ahead and it generates a new picture based on what it already knows. You ultimately will get a new image that you can look at and enjoy, but from the AI's point of view, it is just predicting what the
58 picture should look like based on your instructions, and then it creates it. So, this actually has resulted in some huge controversies at one point, and this was around 2 years ago when everyone was creating pictures with AI, and it was brand new information. And the controversy was as such of if I go into Google and I type in business person, >> [music] >> what you will see is that most pictures are of men. So the AI when it sees an instruction to create a picture of a business person, it will look at its training material and be like, oh, these are all men. So all business people are men, right? So it will create a picture of a man, which then of course raises
45 the red flags of like, okay, so the AI is essentially biased, right? And the AI companies, specifically Google, then did something maybe even more stupid than this, which is they over corrected it. So I don't know how to explain this, but at some point in time with Google, if you asked it to create a image of, let's say, a Nordic warrior, it would give you a warrior in Nordic dress, but that person was a Middle Eastern woman, for example, right? So it tried to overcorrect the bias, which then
31 resulted in people being like, a Nordic warrior is not a Middle Eastern person. Anyway, so that is not fully fixed really today, but the thing is that if you have this robot and you train it on the entirety of the internet, you also train it on the entirety of our biases, right? And the information that is out there. Anyway, quick history lesson, but let's go to the next steps. So what I think you should do now is create some images, have some fun. If you didn't watch the first two videos in our series, go ahead and watch them. The The links are in the description below. Then comment what you want the next video to be about. I really want to create more of these, and I really want to know what you want to learn more about. And also,
17 join our Facebook group. We very recently created a Facebook group because we want you to be able to just message us directly with any questions that you have, and we also want you to be able to speak to other people who are on this learning journey with you. But most importantly, as always, just have fun. Like, this is amazing new technology. Just if you don't want to make it part of your life or your work, that's totally fine. At least if your curiosity drove you to this video, let your curiosity have some fun with [music] image generation on AI. That's it from me. See you very soon. Bye-bye.
