Bayyinah Dream Intensive 1, Day 1

Brief Summary

This video introduces a 10-day intensive course on learning the language of the Quran, focusing on grammar. Nouman Ali Khan outlines the approach to learning Arabic, emphasizing focus, active participation, and understanding the nuances of the language. The course will cover three types of Arabic, and delve into the intricacies of ism (nouns) with a focus on status, number, gender and type.

  • Focus on one resource for learning Arabic and avoid distractions.
  • Actively participate by repeating and answering out loud.
  • Understand the three kinds of Arabic: street Arabic, Fusha, and the language of the ancient Arabs.
  • The course will focus on grammar to understand how words are put together in the Quran.

Introduction and Course Overview

Nouman Ali Khan introduces two students who will be present in the class as test subjects. He expresses his excitement about teaching and hopes the students will enjoy learning the language of the Quran. He introduces his teacher's assistant, Jawad, who will be monitoring comments and questions from the online audience. The students are encouraged to use "UJ" shortcut in the comments to get Jawad's attention.

Mindset and Focus for the Next 10 Days

For the next 10 days, participants should completely focus on this course, reviewing the material even after class. It's important to stick to one resource and avoid being distracted by other Arabic learning materials. Active listening and note-taking are essential for getting the most out of the class.

Accessing Course Handouts and Active Participation

Participants can download the handouts for the class from dreamworldwide.net. The class will involve active participation, with students repeating and answering questions out loud. Comments should be focused on the class material, and students are encouraged to say "Masha'Allah" or "Alhamdulillah" rather than typing it.

Attention Span and Breaks

Recognizing that attention spans may waver, breaks will be incorporated into the class. These breaks will allow students to move around and refresh their minds before returning to the material.

Three Kinds of Arabic: Street, Fusha, and Ancient

There are three kinds of Arabic: street Arabic, Fusha (proper Arabic), and the language of the ancient Arabs (Lisa Nellara). Street Arabic varies by region and is informal. Fusha is the formal Arabic found in newspapers and books. The language of the ancient Arabs is the most advanced and complex, and it is the language in which the Quran was revealed. Understanding all three is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the Quran.

Cool vs. Colonization: Understanding Nuances

Words can change meaning over time. For example, the word "cool" has a different meaning today than it did 200 years ago. Similarly, the word "istislam" in Arabic means "to build" in the Quran, but it later came to mean "colonization." Understanding these nuances is essential for accurately interpreting the Quran.

Recap of the Three Kinds of Arabic

The three kinds of Arabic are street Arabic, Fusha (proper Arabic), and the language of the ancient Arabs. Fusha is a subset of the language of the ancient Arabs. The class will focus on the language of the ancient Arabs, which includes Fusha.

Reading Quran and Introduction to Grammar

Students are expected to read two pages of Quran every day to improve their reading flow. The class will focus on grammar, which is essential for understanding how words are put together properly. Grammar is like the shelves that organize vocabulary, allowing for a deeper understanding of the language.

Three Kinds of Words in Arabic: Ism, Fi'l, and Harf

In Arabic grammar, there are three kinds of words: ism (noun), fi'l (verb), and harf (particle). An ism is a noun, a fi'l is a verb, and a harf is a particle that doesn't make sense unless followed by another word.

Defining Harf (Particle)

A harf is a word that does not make sense by itself and requires another word to follow it. Examples of harf in English include "in," "at," "of," and "to." These are often prepositions.

Defining Fi'l (Verb)

A fi'l is a word that is stuck in time, meaning it happens in the past, present, or future. Examples of fi'l in English include "taught," "teaching," and "will teach."

Applying Fi'l and Harf

The words "apple," "road," "education," "learn," and "help" are analyzed to determine whether they are fi'l or harf. It is determined that "road" and "learn" are fi'l, while "help" can be a fi'l depending on the context.

Defining Ism (Noun)

An ism is a person, place, thing, idea, adjective, adverb, and more. It is not stuck in time like a fi'l, and it makes sense by itself, unlike a harf.

Examples of Ism: Person, Place, Thing, Idea

Examples of ism are given for person (Ahmed, she, grandfather), place (masjid, campus, Texas), thing (mic, book, rock), and idea (love, hate, mercy). Ideas are things that cannot be touched or physically sensed.

Clarifying the Concept of Ideas with -ing Words

The concept of ideas is further clarified, particularly with -ing words. While some -ing words can be fi'l (e.g., "He is cooking"), they can also be ism when used as ideas (e.g., "He loves cooking").

Adjective and Adverb

Adjectives are words that describe a person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., "great teacher," "red building"). Adverbs are words that often end in -ly and describe how an action is performed (e.g., "happily," "kindly," "quickly").

Review of Ism, Fi'l, and Harf

A review of ism, fi'l, and harf is conducted, with the students providing definitions and examples.

Focus on Ism and Introduction to Status

For the next three days, the class will focus solely on ism. To learn ism, four lessons will be covered: status, number, gender, and type. Status is the hardest lesson, and it will be covered first.

Introduction to Rafa' (Nominative)

The concept of status is introduced using sentences in English. The first step is to find the fi'l (verb) in the sentence, and then identify who or what did the action. The ism that performs the action is called rafa'.

Identifying Rafa' in Sentences

More examples are given to identify rafa' in sentences. It is emphasized that rafa' is the doer of the action, and it can be a person, place, thing, or idea.

Addressing Confusion and Introducing Nasb (Accusative)

Confusion about identifying rafa' is addressed, and the concept of nasb (accusative) is introduced. Nasb refers to the details about the fi'l, such as what, where, when, why, and how.

Distinguishing Rafa' from Nasb

The difference between rafa' and nasb is further clarified with examples. Rafa' is the doer of the action, while nasb provides details about the action.

Introducing Jarr (Genitive)

The concept of jarr (genitive) is introduced. Jarr refers to whatever word comes after "of."

Recap and Introduction to Arabic Sounds

A recap of the three kinds of Arabic, the three kinds of words in Arabic, and the three statuses of ism is conducted. The three statuses of ism are rafa', nasb, and jarr.

Arabic Sounds and Shortcuts

The three sounds in Arabic are introduced: "oo" or "un" for rafa', "a" or "an" for nasb, and "i" or "in" for jarr. These sounds can be used as shortcuts to identify the status of an ism.

Applying the Shortcuts to Quranic Examples

The shortcuts are applied to examples from the Quran to identify the status of ism.

Struggles and Review

The students struggle with applying the shortcuts, and the concepts are reviewed. It is emphasized that the goal is not to compete but to learn and struggle together.

More Practice and Application

More practice is conducted to apply the shortcuts and identify the status of ism.

Competition and Effort

The competition is ended, and it is emphasized that effort and struggle are more important than winning.

Conclusion and Homework

The first day of class is concluded, and students are instructed to download the study packet from dreamworldwide.net for the next class.

0:00 ok alhamdulilah hi ra ealmain was salatu wasalam u alika okay so these are my two test subjects for the entire course of the dream curriculum i have been successfully able to negotiate a prisoner exchange from their parents so they are stuck with me for the entire dream curriculum and i get to torture them and feel better about myself because when i teach which is different from giving a lecture teaching is a completely different species altogether when i'm teaching i need to be able to torture a student

0:48 and because this is live online and so many of you want to take this course with me online i don't get to beat you up i don't get to psychologically torment you so i needed someone here so i can you know shame them humiliate them make them question their existence destroy their self-esteem break them down and build them back up but anyway they are part of this class and they are a representation of you so if you say something ridiculous i'm going to let my frustrations out on them okay so the the thing is on on a serious note inshallah i plan on having a lot of fun teaching i miss teaching and i hope that you guys really have a lot of fun learning the language of the quran along with me it's a tough study it's a lot of work but if you have a good attitude and you're positive and you stay focused

1:35 uh and be part of being focused as you you know you stay energetic and you you know uh you're able to take breaks when you need to and you need to you can come back and come stronger then inshallah we're all going to move forward just fine i also want to introduce you to your representative in the class my teacher's assistant uh jawadja what could so in your in the comments please tell me did you guys hear him say salaam just say you just type in yes if you heard him say salaam those of you that have comments nobody said anything look at look at how like how they ignored you they don't love him they heard they heard okay good all right so that's johan dawad's job is while i'm teaching he's supposed to read your

2:21 comments and if you have a comment that's you know relevant not salaam alaikum from bangladesh salam alaikum from philippines salaamwalekum from my bedroom no if you have a if you have a comment that's actually related to the class then he's going to interrupt me while i'm talking because this is not a khudba and he doesn't get sins for doing that these guy's job is going to be interrupt me while i'm talking too and says could you repeat that or i didn't get that wait what do you mean by that i don't understand you can do all of that just like you would do doing a regular class and his job is going to be to interrupt me on your behalf because i can't be reading comments while i'm teaching but i can't have conversation while i'm teaching i'm completely comfortable with being interrupted in conversation so let's talk a little bit about not not what i'm going to teach you but how we're going to go about learning okay and kind of you know get a little bit of a a

3:13 simple orientation i've done a couple of sessions on curriculum and what we're going to be learning so i won't spend time on that but i i want to i want your focus on these 10 days those of you that are watching this and are making the commitment for the next 10 days you need to have a certain kind of mindset and that's inside the class and outside the class so let me talk to you about that okay and you guys this is for you too and you don't have to look there you look at me because i'm your teacher you don't look that's not for you that's the screen right here okay okay so i'm gonna look over there and look at you guys okay so for the next 10 days i want you completely focused on this course you know what that means that even when class is over you're reviewing it in your head and you're not saying well i'm taking this class

4:01 i wonder if my youtube arabic class what else i can find no you're not finding anything else you're not downloading any other pdfs you're not watching any other youtube videos or anything learn arabic in 10 minutes memorize the quran in 37 minutes no stop leave everything else and do this if you want to do something else focus on one resource and ignore everything else that's the first most important bit of advice this is online which means you have a million options to learn a million different ways if you don't want to choose this one choose another one but stick to it if you're going to choose this one then stick to it because otherwise when a student hears something from one kind of book then they hear from another kind of book they get they're like lost between two different teachers teaching the same subject you understand yeah so i really want you guys

4:50 to have just 100 focus on what we're doing here okay is that clear to you guys okay very good but i am that clear okay uh and by the way can you guys hear ahmadine say yes or no say yes or no one first let me see just look at the comments i'm sorry okay don't hurt me please not yet okay so now the second thing don't take notes until i tell you to i can control you guys because i can say stop writing just listen i can do that right but you guys watching online too sometimes i just need you to be in a you know i don't i don't know where you're watching this i don't know if you're a zookeeper and you're next to the gorilla cage and you're watching this i don't know if you're doing this you know you're making biryani at home and you're watching this at

5:36 the same time i don't know but i'd really like it if you can be somewhere where you can focus because this does need your concentration this is not background now background noise this is it's you're not going to get anything out of it if you're passively listening you need to be actively listening to this focused in on this and you need to have notes with you so let me show you first i'm going to switch over to my my my computer screen and show you where you can download the notes for this class for these 10 days forget about the whole program and don't worry about ustad when we finish this program after 10 months or 57 years what's going to happen what will i know how about what will you know after today how about what will you know after 10 days let's focus on that not even 10 days that day is too far away can we just get through this day

6:24 can we focus on what we have in front of us that's how arabic is studied focus on what's in front of you okay so what i'm going to show you now is the handouts you're going to need you obviously don't need them for the first day because i didn't tell you about them beforehand so you're just going to focus and listen in and follow along the way that that this class works is when i ask something you guys say it out loud okay okay you guys have to answer me out loud i ask you to repeat something you repeat it out loud you guys you know wherever you are however whatever your device you're watching on repeat out loud also comment in if you want to comment in and say this the answer that's the answer that's the answer that's great even if you're saying the same thing over and over it's great but you need to verbalize you need to feel like you're engaged

7:14 in this conversation that is how you're going to learn these are not lectures this is a class in a class it's a conversation between you and me we're going back and forth back and forth back and forth and you can get jawad's direct attention a smart way to do it is us or maybe we should give him a shortcut uj right is that okay with you john is ugly okay yeah absolutely okay so if your comment says uj and then ask us this or you jay then he'll know those are specifically meant for him other than the comments of you know i ate a bagel this morning alhamdulillah i'm feeling so grateful heart emoji that we don't need those here this is a class so try to limit your comments com and

8:00 focus your comments entirely on what we're trying to do here okay um if you want to say masha'allah alhamdulillah subhanallah i'm so grateful etc etc don't type it just say it way better okay because that leaves the comments for because the one who needs to hear masha'allah alhamdulillah he heard it okay so what we need to hear are your questions what we need to read are your questions so that's going to be the second part of this orientation also you know i'm i believe in attention span and i also believe that you know you guys probably have the attention span of maybe a squirrel you know like you ever seen a squirrel yeah i've seen a squirrel usually when i was sitting in a class i used to watch a lot of squirrels because you know when you're sitting in the classroom

8:46 it's a boring class you look out the window and then you see a tree and then you see a squirrel yeah yeah and you're able to scroll see you guys have done it okay so here's what a squirrel does right three seconds focus somewhere else two seconds oh my god so you guys can lose track you guys can get distracted and that's okay if i see that you're distracted enough that you're going into the world of the unseen you know what the world of vnc is here's what the world yes yes then i'm gonna give you a break i'm not gonna discontinue the broadcast i'm gonna say we're gonna take a five minute break and i'm gonna we're gonna i'm gonna make these guys run around you guys go do some jumping jacks or something get the blood flowing get it back in your brain

9:34 and then come back and hit it again it's hard sitting in front of a computer it's hard sitting idle and learning in fact it's even hard for me teaching like this because i'm used to walking around and teaching but i want you to feel like i'm in the living room with you teaching you that's what i want you to feel like which is why i've chosen this format i think this works and inshallah it's an experiment it's a new thing for me i haven't taught to a you know a device before so um it is new for me so it's going to be new for you too but inshallah we're going to work through it together and we're going to learn quite a bit together so let me now show you on the screen where you got to go to um get your stuff what does this look at look a new piece i want to look at new pc okay

10:23 so you're going to go to dream that's not how you write dream dream worldwide.net okay i know the broadcast view is kind of hiding the screen so i'll lower that a little bit and then expand it okay that's dreamworldwide.net that's the website right and when you scroll down it says exercise work number one exercise workbook right here this pdf document we will use in class every day for the next 10 days you should have a printout or an extra device on which to view it and follow along and do the work i recommend printing it out and putting it in a binder printing it out

11:10 and putting it in a binder wow you guys already got it yeah so you're ahead of the class print this out it's downloads right here print it out and put it in a binder okay i'm gonna turn these notifications off later so that's what you're going to need for tomorrow okay i would rather you have it printed out i'd rather you have a pen with you paper with you and then we go through it because i'm going to show you the same document on the screen and i'm going to work on it with you so inshallah we'll do it together okay so even i i'll just show you if i download it here i'll put it up on the screen and sometimes i'm gonna zoom in here and say we're on page this and look at this part and look at that part and i'll highlight highlight and annotate and stuff like that so you guys can see and you guys can see i'll make sure you have it open on your notes too right

11:58 but a lot of the times i'm just opening microsoft word and i'm typing in here this is my board for you this is where i write for you okay so i'm going to come back so you guys can see me again um let's see that's that's good okay uh and so well you don't have to write down everything i put on the screen here like i said don't take notes until i tell you don't take notes until i tell you and in a normal classroom when i have people sitting in front of me i tell them stop looking at everybody else stop comparing yourself to everyone else and william don't get distracted by the comment screen i'm going to turn that off okay i shouldn't turn off right now because i need to help your attention span i'll be right back

12:48 oh oh what happened it's gone okay now what you're going to look at huh i was thinking about looking at the comments oh yeah what were you looking at there's no squirrel there no i'm just like looking over there oh no it's already begun okay long ways to go long ways to go i'm gonna put that screen on this side so you guys can see it and i can see it okay that's what i'm gonna do for the bar okay intelligence is off the charts thank you okay so now we're going to get started today is your first day i'm going to go a little bit easy on you today even though i really don't want to i want to like really like destroy your brain cells you leave here crying through your nostrils like that's what i want that's what i want so let's get started we are here to learn uh arabic and before we learn

13:40 the material itself i want to talk to you guys a little bit about three kinds of arabic there are three kinds of arabic you're not writing this down just listen okay there's three kinds of arabic and the way to make that simple for you guys is there is street arabic street slang yes there's fosa you know we're not going to write it in arabic yet even though i can write in the epic i'm really good at writing in arabic like that okay and then there is the ancient the ancient no language of the old the ancient arabs

14:27 and that's called lisa nellara okay so there's three there's street arabic there's fosa and there's the sun and i want you to know the difference between them i'll explain it and i'm gonna ask you to explain it to me and then i'm gonna ask you guys without looking on the screen because i'm gonna erase it and don't type this up or don't take notes or screenshots or pictures none of that then you're gonna try to answer it for me too okay so you got you guys are both gonna try to do that so uh street arabic street arabic means that there are different neighborhoods in the world right yeah and so in america for example there are neighborhoods in new york city uh and different parts of new york and there are neighborhoods in new jersey and there are neighborhoods in you know virginia and there are neighborhoods in texas and neighborhoods in carolina north carolina south

15:16 carolina et cetera and when you go to certain neighborhoods you hear a different kind of english like it's a it sounds a little bit different right so if you you go to some places in the united states people say can i get some water water and other places they'll say can i get water water and other places in the world you say won't talk okay so depends on where you are later and water and water changes yeah right so um the same thing you know when when i came to texas i couldn't understand what people were saying at first because i was used to new york english right

16:01 so there's that's street it's street english it's informal english and it's different in different countries it's different in different cities it can even be different in different neighborhoods right so that's street arabic that's not the arabic i'm going to teach you sorry but if you wanted to learn that it would be really helpful if you are a tourist which you don't have to worry about for a while now right so but if you were a tourist if you're going to egypt you should learn egyptian arabic that they use in the street in egypt if you wanted to learn you know if you wanted to go to morocco you should probably learn moroccan street arabic informal the big word for it is colloquial arabic but i don't care to say that for you you could just say street arabic okay so i'm like i i'm a student of arabic but i'm also a student of some beginner student of

16:49 spanish and a very beginner student of german for example right other languages and in spanish mexican spanish is completely different from the spanish in spain which is totally very different even though the way they pronounce certain foods or talk about certain foods is different in ecuador even if it's the same food and it's this different word for it in colombia and a different word for it in mexico so if a mexican person that speaks mexican spanish goes to like a colombian restaurant and orders that food or the workers come they won't understand sometimes they'll get the wrong thing because they're they're their arabic is so different the same way street arabic is very different in different places right again that's not what we're working on that's the first kind right what's the second kind you see safe was how would like your throat hurting

17:36 yeah good and the ha is like you ate a mint and you go oh like yeah first half because is more like you had barbecue and you're like not barbecue mint first arabic that is proper right so it's the arabic you'll find in newspapers it's the arabic you'll find on al jazeera news or something like that it's arabic you'll find in these books that i have behind me most of these books are in arabic and that's in arabic so it's properly written arabic

18:23 okay or properly spoken arabic and people think that if you know you know the language of the quran but that's not true that's important that that isn't true why because fosa is i want you to think of it this way uh let me see if i can draw on here just let me draw uh no just let me draw let me put insert a box or shape maybe we'll let me draw okay no i want like a shape shape there's like colors right there

19:10 okay so it won't let me do it okay i'll just draw fine word okay so imagine this whole box is you know or this box is of arabic right arabic is a way smaller part of that so the language of the quran is the orange thing okay and first arabic is the blue thing so it's only a small portion it's a small portion so some of these as they know arabic therefore they know the language of the quran they know some things about the language of the quran

19:58 but there's a lot they don't know right yeah so facade is really good i mean when you when you learn foss how you can speak well when you learn first how you can write well you can understand well um you you sound educated in arabic you can impress people with your arabic if you know what right and it has rules and grammar and things like that right but when you when it comes to the language of the arabs that which is the third category right let me go back to what i was writing before i said there's street arabic there's arabic and there's one language language of the ancient arabs now this is a big blame language of the ancient arabs you know why i'm saying that because this is how they used to speak thousands of years ago or hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years ago

20:47 think of it this way in school have you had to read shakespeare yet no no okay when you do you're going to find it difficult because he speaks in ways that we don't speak anymore right his english seems very different okay it even seems very advanced well the thing is the older version of us the language of any language is way more advanced and it kind of gets it shrinks and waters down and gets simpler as time goes on okay so the ancient languages used to be way more more more words way more ways of saying things way more complicated you know and way more beautiful also and then as time went by they started becoming easier and easier and lesser and lesser and lesser

21:36 that's what happened to arabic so this has great it's proper but it's only a small part of what is actually the language of the arabs the quran is speaking in the language of the ancient arabs okay okay so of course it has fusa in it because a part of that language yeah but we don't want to start with fusa and stay at fusha we need to understand the ancients the language of the ancient arabs so that's now what's the another way of thinking about this difference this is a this is how good arabic is spoken nowadays or this is how good arabic is written or read nowadays this is how good arabic used to be

22:23 you know two thousand years ago 1500 years ago right so and there's been a difference because the quran was revealed to the prophet saws a millennium and a half ago like 1400 plus years ago right that's why we have to know this language so we know exactly how they used to talk back then because the quran was talking to them at that time right so if we only learned this one then we'd get confused about what the quran is saying let me give you an english example okay let me put an english example on here so that would be like uh property or that would be like ancient right old arabic you can think of it as old arabic yeah so basically there's street arabic

23:10 there's a new proper arabic and there's old proper arabic yeah right that's another way of looking at it yeah okay now let's think of the word cool you guys know what the word cool meals right um but you're still wearing a sweater you're still cool okay so the thing is let's say 200 years ago in england somebody said cool that would make sense it wouldn't make sense they probably were talking about opening the window and yeah cool cool it is cool here today yeah you know so cool actually was only talking about temperature yeah right and hot was also back then somebody

24:01 said that's hot they would mean temperature they were mean temperature right but if you watched uh nba finals game you and your friend and your friend saw this amazing three-point shot and said cool and you're like that was hot yeah he's not talking about temperature and you're not you're not talking about temperature you're talking about what you like what you what you were impressed by or what you thought was good and you use the word cool or you use the word now the word the spelling is the same right yeah the way you pronounce it is the same but 200 years ago did people understand it the same way no no so if you say well i know english from today

24:48 so i can read something from 200 years ago in english and still get it that's different you're going to get confused right you're going to think it means one thing while it means something else the same thing can happen in arabic so just because you know the proper meaning of a word in arabic now yeah it doesn't mean that's how the word is used in the quran yeah an example in the quran you're not writing this down or memorizing it i just want you to just like cool and hot nowadays and back in the day i want to give you a an arabic word in the in nowadays and back in the day i'm going to make you pronounce it for me uh guys read it out loud read this word out loud i'll make it bigger so you can see better no read carefully

25:37 where's su there's no dhamma is now do you know what colonization is yeah yeah okay colonization is when one nation slowly takes over another nation makes colonies out of them nowadays in arabic when they talk about colonization the word for colonization is what is used for colonization it's proper arabic it's in newspapers and books and things like that in the quran allah says 1400 years ago at the time means when you want someone to build something oh okay when you want someone to what build them like if i wanted you to build that robot

26:25 that toy robot over there yeah we got a toy robot so if i wanted you to build that i would say islam so i wanted you to build yes i wanted you to build that allah says he put you on the earth and he wanted you to build on it oh okay like allah wanted us to build now what it became later on is what colonization now the bad translation would be allah put you on the earth and he wanted you to colonize it yeah that's because that means almost like invading and taking over other people's land it has other meanings in it now right but that's not what the quran is talking about at all yeah so that's why we have to understand that there are three kinds of arabic and now you're going to tell me what they are and i'm going to relax

27:12 i'm waiting all right the three where's the world the internet's waiting the first one is the um street everybody the first one is the street arabic and it's like different arabic and different places excellent and um oh you thought i'd move on to him i know hey this is your this is your time to be it also uh it's so difficult different different countries speaking it cannot be like this different countries speak arabic differently good we moved on from that we got it that's street arabic then what um i gotta think for a moment the whole internet i forgot the name but i know like the meaning

28:01 this is for my family what's the second one the second one i forgot the name but i know the meaning it's um it's like property arabic first half oh you remembered oh you've redeemed the honor of the family mulan okay very good so good what else i mean uh it's proper day arabic uh proper day arabic like today's not a proper day like some days are proper okay it's arabic that we use today it's not like ancient arabic that that they uh like the prophet saw some used 1400 years ago right and the meanings are kind of different what's the relationship between okay that's the difference right yeah but what's the relationship between fusa arabic and the language of the arabs like the old arabic

28:50 what's the if you were to compare the two how would you think about it uh both of them like you know this they haven't changed like no i that's what i'm looking for how would you compare the two how would you put the two if you want to think about them i don't know visually they're both similar think outside the box i think outside a smaller version of the the proper word in english would be this a subset yeah well you guys heard about a subset when something is a part of something right this book is a subset of all the books i have meaning it's one of the many books i have yeah right one slice is a subset of the whole pizza yeah right is a subset of the entire ancient if the ancient

29:42 arabic language was a pizza foster is just a slice there's the rest of the pizza to go everybody online clear about that jawad everybody's doing okay other than someone they come from okay excellent excellent excellent okay and you don't have to be on the app you have to be on don't worry about the app right now or you know the internet's not working and you know my life's falling apart don't worry about that right now arabic that's all you got to worry about okay so we've moved on from that so the language i'm going to teach you is going to be the language of the ancients ancient arabs and of course as i teach you some of those things or many of those things are going to be anyway because that box is inside the the bigger box so we're kind of kind of

30:28 starts kind of sort of start learning both of them at the same time a box and a box a box in a box now what i want you to know is when i teach you guys i don't want you to write in arabic okay probably because your handwriting is disgusting so um because you're going to write answers i didn't know you know how to write mandarin what do you mean is that it says i thought you built an ancient city okay so i don't want to do that because it would be too exhausting for you and that's a separate class like a class to teach you how to write okay okay i do expect that you know how to read you messed up a little bit on reading estimate we'll work on your reading too as we go that's okay you don't have to know tajweed

31:15 we can improve on that as we go but you're going to have to one thing you have to do if you are in this class is you have to read two pages of quran whether you understand them or not every single day to keep getting better at reading in flow okay and even if the tweet is not perfect you guys online even if this is not perfect you just gotta do it you just gotta read two pages every single day out loud not silent reading no you're gonna struggle and sound things out and the best thing you can do is read it listen to a reciter that you like preferably someone slow reciting so that you can hear all the sounds you know coming out and you can sync your voice with theirs meaning they

32:02 sound beautiful you sound hideous but you guys are in chorus together right so and that's okay because then you're kind of learning to mimic how they move from one word to the other word right so if you did that it'll help you reading flow which is not part of this class but it certainly helps me and it helps you a lot too okay now we are going to start learning arabic itself now we've talked enough about arabic and the three kinds of arabic but now we're going to start learning arabic itself okay so the thing about the one last introductory comment is that these for these 10 days what we're going to be learning is grammar grammar now people say grammar is boring just teach me vocabulary teach me the words in arabic what does this word mean

32:47 what does that word mean what's the word for book like you said what's the word for fahrenheit okay well you'd be happy to know fahrenheit is not in the quran so we don't have to worry about it okay okay the reason grammar is important i'll give you an example of how what grammar is think of all these books right each of these books think of them like they're a word each each book is just one word which means this is the vocabulary right but the way the vocabulary can only get organized is if the the the books are properly placed inside the shelf otherwise it would be a huge mess yeah right so what will kev the way to put vocabulary in a proper organized way and so that it makes sense like if i was looking for a certain book and i

33:36 didn't know where to go and there were all this giant pile with half of them open on a mountain i wouldn't be able to get to where i need to get to right but remember we had a few books here on the table and i said hey we gotta put them back and we could look them up by title or color and you know place them back well that's what grammar is grammar says language is it's not just a bunch of words it's how do you put words together properly right so if you learn grammar first it's really cool for quran especially then you see how allah put words together okay so it's not just oh i know this word i know this word and i know this word three words i also know how allah put them together okay like why do you put these three words together how did he put these three words together what if you rearrange them would something

34:23 change you know when you guys are building something with legos or something like that um you or you know you want a certain you know color for the feet of the robot you're building or the legs or whatever else right and you pick the right parts to put together you don't just randomly stick things together that's where grammar is getting sleepy it's okay okay say it okay this is nice just because i woke up really early six a.m i know i did get you guys up early because we had to set up for this class and do the test runs and stuff like that so these kids have been up pretty early which is why i'm gonna give you an earlier day today it's okay i don't want to teach in a rush so so long as we are we're off to a smooth start inshaallah we're we're going to be okay but i do want i expect it's 10 20 right now i expect at least another 40 minutes of class and

35:10 inshallah will will be okay and if i see another yawn i'll give you guys a five minute break and you know so we'll do something i'm not tired good thing the camera can't see what we're gonna do we're gonna be outside i'm gonna slam you into a wall or turn you into a yeah okay level pool or something yeah okay yeah and we have a ps4 okay now grammar there are when you want to start learning grammar you learn that there are three kinds of words in arabic wait there were three kinds of arabic right this is not three kinds of arabic now we're inside which arabic the words ancient excellent so let me hold on let me i want to do this i want to see what a disaster this is i've never done this before

36:01 although okay let's see then what do you do oh size cool i got to pick a color what kind of picture it's like a dark color okay how many kinds of arabic were there three three what were they um what was it i can't even forget uh i know what it was about what was it about it was about um yeah no no what was it about it was about like how different people like different countries nah ah that was street oh this one's uh

36:49 this one oh yeah it was like inside the eight it's like a small box and it's like this subset oh subset of like the ancient arabic but what is it itself it's like it's how proper arabic is spoken nowadays proper arabic nowadays okay so i'll just write proper my name is beautiful handwriting and then what's the last one uh ancient arabic you forgot what how do you say the name again okay first hair first hair you don't have to know the terms yet but foster is an important word to know okay now there's three kinds of arabic right yeah and now i'm saying there are three kinds of words in here yeah

37:37 so we're not there's not another three it's under here we're now we're inside here okay you got it okay that was really beautiful it's a box inside of a box with a beard or some hair and a mustache okay think of the words in arabic you did this with me some time ago but you forgot and that's completely okay yeah so yeah sorry no i forgive you the shame on your face is very pleasing to me okay they're called ism okay so let me write that up you don't have to write this in arabic folks on watching online you don't have to write this down just watch

38:22 okay i'm going to maximize the screen so you guys can see the screen better actually no no need for now because i'm not writing too much uh say this for me

39:12 again you almost died saying do that again you're like ism you're like choking yourself too much choke yourself a little less very fed not not choke yourself a little more go okay i'll work with it yeah okay so ism okay what does that mean let me show you what that means let me find my book technical difficulties no technical difficulties oh this is too small this is a must-have it's a copy of the quran right yeah you guys are all familiar with quran

40:03 so if i open up i mean you can't see this is pretty distant from you but there's lots of words on here yeah right if i point at any word anywhere it has to be either an ism it's one of them there's no fourth so the whole page is full of only isms and you got it okay that's why we say there are only how many kinds of words in arabic three so if you see any word in the quran it's okay so let's now talk about health because the hardest one is islam the second hardest one is

40:53 and the easiest one is and since i like you a little bit i'm going to say how first define how first okay a half is defined as a word that is nonsense good you remember some things oh gosh unless followed by another word okay let's think about that for a moment okay a word that is nonsense unless followed by another word okay uh let's think of the word in if i said he said hey what you doing and i say in uh

41:41 or if you said what's up where are you well look at this makes sense doesn't make sense i have to say at the park at the airport at work at the masjid if i say at by itself it makes no sense right if i say in by itself it makes no sense no sense now how many kinds of words are there in arabic i forgot okay what are they it's something i didn't have run the page you see the answer shoot yeah don't don't read close the binder clip okay the internet doesn't have a binder yet that's you know yeah so how many kinds of words

42:27 okay which one am i talking about right now good what example did i give you yeah and what else at uh-huh where uh where no where is that where makes sense oh and if i say where by itself it can make sense for example if you say um hey there was a car accident and i say what where where did that make sense by itself yeah totally it did so where is that well if i said of hey guess what um it doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense if i went to a if i sat inside a taxi car and the guy said where do you want to go and i said two two two two yeah that doesn't make sense no oh okay to the hotel it doesn't make sense okay to the hotel makes sense yes no at least it makes some sense yeah

43:17 yeah oh what about some hey so um what's that you got there oh this this uh this uh and the answer is the doesn't make sense unless the name is that means that the word the is a in is a in english they call them prepositions oh yeah that's the english word what's the english word for health position you have to remember this now i'm teaching you arabic but i'm teaching you how to connect arabic and english too okay right so it's important for you to know some of these words so when a word doesn't make sense unless something else comes after it the english word for that usually is what prepositions but we're not going to use prepositions we're going to use

44:04 what we're going to use because when we learn more arabic we'll see that half are more than just prepositions sometimes they're more than that too okay so what's the definition of a hub a word that does not make sense by itself you have to add another word good can the uh the online audience give me some suggestions for some huffs in english can you put them on there oh yeah i gotta hit new comments right yeah so everybody it keeps disappearing two and that's those are the ones i gave aziz

44:53 very good above above can sometimes be make sense by itself yeah where did quran come from yeah so it could make sense by itself um tp i don't know what tp is i mean i've heard of toilet paper but that does make sense by itself the i mean not for muslims but okay under um can be sure sometimes behind no behind can't sometimes behind can be a uh where yet listen with with is good over's good until is good yeah i like it like is good but or more

45:42 excellent excellent very good you guys got it so everybody masha'allah in the in the time that we spent so far you've learned a few things you've learned that there are seven kinds of arabic yes there was a squirrel moment that was a squirrel moment how many kinds of arabic internet how many kinds of arabic are there internet let's go move on they're still writing yeah they're still answering my question is there a lag or something joel can you hear me i can hear you then why are they still answering okay internet keep up

46:29 there good job three kinds what are the three kinds of arabic pay attention to the question listen to what i'm saying what are the three kinds of arabic arabic two kinds of arabic what you got let's see uh ahmed what are you what do you think me i'm looking at the comments no people keep saying there are three kinds ah very good sema street fossa an ancient good job street fossil ancient street prop ancient proper street man you reverse the order that's like almost haram but okay that's fine street i like it i like we should rename it yeah i mean we used to call it fusable for many years

47:19 but we should change it to husfah we should that's pretty epic imagine being that person you know when you couldn't remember it i said it's like pink yeah yeah and you just didn't okay anyway okay so half is a word that makes no sense unless another word comes that means we only have two more definitions left what are the two other definitions good let's talk about which one we're moving up the ladder we're at the bottom of the ladder so we should talk about what in english i'll start there in english they call them verbs oh okay okay we don't care we know that they call them verbs but is more more complicated than verbs so we're not going to use verbs we're just going to use the word

48:06 and the way we will define it is a word that that happens in the past present or future okay meaning a word that is stuck in time a word who's the or actually even said i i say instead of happens a word stuck in the past present or future a word that is stuck in time okay if i said will teach that's is there a time no we'll teach yeah there is is it the past present or future we'll teach uh future future if i said taught oh past past teaching presence present

48:55 you get it yeah so some words tell you oh this is talking about something that already happened some words tell you this is happening right now if you say i am eating then eating would become what present present right if i said he drives slowly he drives slowly excellent that's present if i said he drove slowly past if i say he will drive slowly future future so words can be passed past they call it in english they call it past tense present tense intense right so that's fair basically a word that is stuck in past present or future so tell me about this is this and i'm going to write a few words on the screen you tell me which ones of them are a fair okay that's what you have to do apple grubs

49:56 um oops and okay let's see apple uh internet tell me it's not second time tell me apple yes or no no apple yes or no is apple affair yes or no that's what i want to know i don't want to know what it is i want to know if it's a fail or not nope it's not why not because it's not in uh it's not in the past

50:48 but it is i hate an apple yesterday oh that's it from the apples of my past well that's if you like added it if you added like a word when i say what i ate an apple which word is in the past not apple apples it's a timeless word it doesn't have any time in it yeah because it doesn't have any time in it it can't be to be a fail you have to be stuck in the past present or future by the way does the word apple make sense by itself yeah wait if it makes sense by itself it can't be a so now i know it's not a her and it's not a scary so what is it sm it has to be innocent oh okay by elimination smart right super smart road it's the past is it no is it no way no because it's the past

51:46 road is the past yeah yeah seriously yeah no is it no it's not it wrote you're right it's the past okay i'm just messing with you okay so education education but by the way because it's the past it's a fit right education education it's not it's it's not timeless it's not timeless no no education's not timeless well educate boring sorry this isn't boring you just said education i'm okay okay i'm sorry i'm gonna give you an extra hard exam just hide my things okay education yeah no it's not why not because it's not if i ask you is education in the past is education in the

52:37 present education in the future could you stick it to one of those no so it's not in time it's not stuck in time yeah which means it is not it's not by the way yeah it's not a health either yeah yeah because if it was a heart if it wouldn't make sense by itself but when i say the word education something comes to mind right a sensible idea comes to mind so education has to be a what excellent learned learn is the past it passed excellent so therefore it is a uh let me tell you why i said that allah because there was this gentleman i knew in a masjid i shall not name he was very old and every time somebody came in he loved to like make fun of them and he was so old like you know somebody gets so old they don't care anymore he was one of those

53:26 like he was so so funny and he would just grab you like squeeze your arm by the way your clothes are not ironed like you would do that right he was the best i would usually you go to masjid to pray my intentions were corrupted because i would go that mushy to pray and also be entertained by him you know uncle awesome i called him uncle awesome so uncle awesome like to give the adhan okay but because and he's old so nobody's going to argue if he's going to give the adhan yeah except you know the person who gives the assignment is all the way in the front of the question yeah he'd like to be a little bit further back and then when he was given the adan he used to like look at people and like wink at them and stuff so and he would like make the weirdest of that so he'd be like

54:16 like that so whenever you give me an epic answer i remember allah so is learn the house yeah yeah yeah no no no no thank you i keep forgetting that it helps how it is no it doesn't make sense help doesn't make sense help oh hell no it doesn't make sense by itself does it helps guess what does an idea come to mind yeah yeah like you're in danger yes so that the concept of helping comes to mind right so it doesn't make sense but the bigger question is is it stuck in time no really yeah so eats helps drives cares works oh no this is the second time

55:10 it's the um it's the present so this is the second time yes yeah is it don't make that mistake again then what made you say that it's not second time i want to understand it's okay to make a mistake i want to see what you were thinking so you don't think like that the next time so you avoid making a mistake like that mistakes are the most valuable thing you will do in this class because mistakes expose how you were thinking and when we think about our mistakes and we really analyze how how come i thought that way when you correct that then you'll avoid making a hundred other mistakes okay so i actually personally as a teacher get really happy when you make mistakes okay because it gives me an opportunity to change the way you think right so tell me why you thought helps is not in time uh well i thought it was an attack because i

55:58 didn't look at the s i just thought help like you know oh you didn't you don't pay attention okay what about you what's your what's your thought the s kind of like threw me off yes threw you up yeah what made you what did us make you think um like you couldn't put it in a sentence or something yeah that's what i think happened okay all right so the easy thing to do is when you want to figure out whether a word is an asymptote or a half you can try to put it in a sentence like especially between issa and phil and i haven't defined ism yet but for a fear just put it in a sentence like she wrote oh that that happened in the past right or they learned oh that happened in the past or he helps oh that's happening right now yeah right so it's because it's happening right now it's a it's a fail right so that's an easy way to just add a person to it yeah and tell you can tell if

56:47 you know if they're past present or future quickly quickly uh i think it would be because quickly because you could put it in a sentence he is quickly or he is quickly should i see so i started taking an english class now too no he's like he moves quickly yeah he moves quickly yeah but then you have that then you're talking about the word moves not the word quickly oh you're right so it doesn't make sense no wait no i mean if you're slow and i say quickly quickly so it's a fine because it could be a lot more so it could be yeah it could be present well the thing is how can quickly be present or pass is it stuck in the past present or future uh it's stuck in a present no it's stuck prove to me that it's stuck in the present like let's say quickly i'm

57:38 moving slowly you say quickly but she said i am moving what if i said yesterday i moved quickly now i put it in the past yeah tomorrow i will move quickly now i put it in the future so it's not stuck in the past or present review because i could put it anywhere oh so if you can't put it anywhere if you can't limit it to the past or present or future then it cannot be a fair okay okay and the word quickly does make sense yeah which means it also cannot be a which means it has to be s oh okay okay you guys got that questions about that do you want to be getting any questions i think the general concept is understood

58:26 okay very good let's get to the definition of an issue before we do repeat after me a half is a word that makes no sense ahead for the word that makes no sense unless another word comes after it unless another one comes after it is stuck in the past present or future is stuck in the past present or future you can even add the word tense so affair is stuck in the past present or future tense say it again okay now i'll say the first part you'll finish the sentence a half is a is a word that doesn't make sense unless he comes afterwards a word that is stuck in the past present or future tense excellent and is a person oh it's like a place thing

59:25 what do i write what do i write first and place thing idea idea i know you don't understand that right now but you're going to say it person place thing idea pressure and place thing idea adjective adverb and more adjective adverb and more person place thing idea person place thing idea adjective adverb and more adjective adverbs and more sm present place thing idea adjective adverb more good william a person place a thing

1:00:13 idea adjective adverb and more person place thing idea adjective adverb and more guys see if you can type it up from memory in the comments do it i was looking hard how do you smile i don't even look at it and this is a person person adjective adverb and more now let's go back no mind is a person yes simon the word no mind is innocent yeah okay uh campus is a place yeah so campus is an island because it's a place microphone is a thing that's an issue education is an idea so it's an sm so where does that have a shun at the end submission education fruition tuition right all the shun words are all what ideas

1:01:05 some ideas also have ing at the end so sleeping eating helping cooking right they can also be ideas sometimes in english some some words can be filled sometimes and ideas other times yeah right so ing words are like that but in english in arabic it's never confusing but in english it can be confusing in a word can like an arabic word be like two things gonna be an ism no no english it can be in arabic it cannot be okay so yeah it's three things and it can only go in one one bucket at a time okay once you throw in a well bucket it doesn't belong in the other bucket okay okay that's a good question now let me tell a person is obvious right so if i say the word he refers to a person if i say for example um woman it refers to a person if i say grandfather

1:01:52 it refers to a person so any word if their name or a pronoun any word that can talk about a person is innocent any word like masjid campus school new york texas dallas right jakarta et cetera all of that would be an issue because it's a place whether it's the name of a place or the word for a place even if you say we're like field or backyard or you know park that's a place so that's an ism right a thing could be anything right it could be any object that would be an ism so a mic a book you know a rock event a pencil an exit sign whatever right an idea is a little bit tough so let's talk about idea in every language there are words for things you cannot touch like i said the word education and i say could you put pick the education up and put it on the shelf

1:02:41 you can't do that can you because you could put the mic up and put it on the shelf yeah but you can't say i pick up education yeah you understand but do we talk about education yeah but we're talking about an idea which we cannot pick up and touch we cannot put it in a fridge we cannot you know travel with it it's not a thing that it's not an it's not a thing it's rather an idea love is an idea love is not something you can touch smell hear see yeah but love is actually a idea an idea right so love hate uh mercy islam submission right uh knowledge yeah mercy because can you you know can you touch mercy with the five cent or feel mercy with the five senses can you see it smell it hear it no mercy is felt yeah right mercy is understood

1:03:28 but it's not it's not physical so there are lots of words for things that are not physical and those words are called ideas yes ideas are also isms questions about that what's that yeah if you don't mind can you go over the definitions of asymptotic one more time we're getting a lot of those okay so let's go over the definition of my assistants uh you know and mariam are going to help me teach take over the class uh and ism is a person place thing idea adjective adverb and more we haven't explained that one yet but my the audience would like to hear from you welcome to the show um our audience really wants to know uh based on your expertise so what's a health a half is um a word that doesn't make sense unless you add something

1:04:17 after it or before it no no before it right after it no there's a difference of opinion about that people who have no knowledge think before it and people who do think after it oh which one is it no it's before it right no it's after after it a half always wants a word after it yeah for the example can i give you two two you want to put something before two in airport two at airport two to the airport yeah yeah start the airport too in the kitchen the kitchen in in kitchen so it's after yeah yeah okay redefine professor medium our audience would like to welcome to the show the hat yes okay the half is um a word that doesn't

1:05:04 make sense unless you add something after it that's quite interesting and our second panelist is uh professor phd i would like to tell you a little bit about the fail um is okay where am i no i just completely went blank oh wait hold on let me know let the audience focus on you a little bit okay go ahead look at the cameras here why oh stuck in time it's stuck in time so it's past present future tense good yeah

1:05:55 go but i'd like to go back to you professor ahmadiyya and help our audience understand an example of a huff or three examples would be really helpful um eight good eight um as in because it's in the past driving driving as if i'm driving in the present learned learned would be a fair why because it's the past it's the past is it only about the past or the present or can also be something else it's only about that past and present only and future and future thank you would you like to give us uh three examples of uh uh so i had three examples is two i think i asked you for help examples you give me failed examples but that's okay oh yeah it's okay because it helps with the confusion so fit in

1:06:45 is what you gave me you're gonna give me half okay so how did you could put two and four four like four four like no four f4 why is for a house because you can't be like four airport for the nation you oh yeah you can't say that actually right so yeah it's a half it's a house because four and then on its own it doesn't make any sense you have to add something after it phenomenal other questions about that before we dig into islam some more um jawad no we're good on that um there is a question about ism okay so let me finish this discussion then we'll take that

1:07:34 question sure okay so we talked about person right uh let's you know just kind of write some examples in front of each so that we can help think about it right yeah so a person could be ahmed sometimes he's a person uh she could be word for a person right or her or you know um him or they they could be a person yeah right um you can say who the word who can refer to a person right who are they like who are they or who is that right um the word that can also refer to a person sometimes right uh you can think of person as um let's see what else could be a person

1:08:21 no that's that pretty much covers it that's enough that's enough persons mm-hmm okay let's give why don't you guys give me some examples oh yeah good reminder kind of important for the internet here you go that's person those are examples for persons so now let's give some examples for place place i already got like a few places you got place ideas yeah okay i got like a hundred you'd be creative okay place the ice cream shop okay the ice ice cream shop i'll take it i i i agree man i miss the ocean i really do yeah such a great place to catch corona park is one park yeah uh the red sea okay you got the ocean already can you not can you move

1:09:06 on for bodies of water something else but you know it's a place it's a happy place it's a happy place i feel so educated yeah this is the holy area by the way guys this is not the holy area yes it is oh no gundam that we're building over there okay the masala's the holy this is the second holy place this is the second holy place and ah okay park what else uh campus you said camp campus okay sure yeah but these are all words generic can you think of specific places um my house okay house or my house that's fine yeah what about names of some places um the ice cream shop you already did mcdonald's we went from a holy place to a very unholy place

1:09:59 okay mcdonald's habits what i want to know is what about names of places not just restaurants but canada china india okay those are countries any other kinds of places uh texas because places could be countries right yeah but they could also be using states sure it could be states like new york what else fort worth it could be cities like fort worth dallas or cities like dallas okay so cities places you know these are all places got it okay um thing thing okay i'll listen to the internet tell me about things i need five things quickly taco bell you get something at taco bell yeah you do canada nice screen book cat dog is that one word
