00 If you are afraid that you've been left behind in this artificial intelligence revolution and you really wish that you could use ChatGPT and other AI tools, but you don't really know where to begin, then you're in the perfect place. Stick around. I got you covered. I am Dylan Stewart, the MacWhisperer, and in this video we're going to take aim at one of the most important technological advances of our times. That's right, artificial intelligence and more specifically ChatGPT. In this video, I'm going to give you everything that you need to know to get started using ChatGPT from how to Sign in and download the app to how to utilize
50 prompts and conversations effectively. Make sure to stick around for my MacWhisperer Power tip because this tool is so valuable that it will uplevel everything that you do with ChatGPT. Let's hop on over to the computer and get started. ChatGPT and artificial intelligence are everywhere now, and people are using it for everything. It's become a tool that's almost synonymous with technology, and yet most people are still using it like it's Google. Let's be clear ChatGPT is not Google. It's not some website that you search for answers on. It's a much more powerful tool than that. And as we walk through this lesson today, you're going to see exactly how powerful it is.
36 The first thing that we need to do is sign you up with ChatGPT for your own account. And to do that we're going to come to our browser and we're going to go to the website chat gt.com. If you're new, you should click where it says Sign up for free, put in your email address and select a password, and you'll be all set up. If you've already got an account you should be logging in. There are three different kinds of ChatGPT accounts. There is a free account which has limited functionality, but it's still a great place to start. There is a paid account which costs $20 per month and gives you advanced tools, and then there's what's called the pro account, which costs $200 per month. The Pro account is really for a select few people who are using AI for high level tools. For you, you can start on the free account, or upgrade to the paid account.
24 Once you get yourself logged into the website, it should look like this, but you don't have to use ChatGPT from the website. ChatGPT has a dedicated MAC app that you can download for free. To do that, don't bother going into the Mac app store. There's too many fake ChatGPT accounts and will be hard to find. Instead, come up to your browser here and navigate to openai.com. OpenAI is the company that makes ChatGPT. And when you arrive on this website, come over to where it says ChatGPT on the left side, and click where it says, download the app and download the Mac OS version of the ChatGPT app. The website is really functional and we'll be back on the website for a couple of features, but the ChatGPT app does things that the website doesn't do.
09 So it's important to get it downloaded. And if you're using an iPhone or an iPad, you can download the app there as well. Simply come into your app store. And search for ChatGPT. you're going to get a ton of different results, but be careful. There are fake ChatGPT apps all over the app store like this AI chatbot at the top, or this chatbot AI assistant, or chat on ai. None of those are actually ChatGPT. You should be looking for the app that says ChatGPT, the official app by open ai. If you have a phone that supports Apple Intelligence. You should also take the following step by going into your Settings app , scrolling down to where it says Apple Intelligence and Siri. And scrolling down until you see the extension section here.
55 Click on where it says ChatGPT, and make sure to sign into your account. You should also turn off where it says Confirm ChatGPT requests. That means when you ask Siri something and she doesn't know the answer, she can use ChatGPT to find the answer without bothering you or asking for additional steps, and that's all you need to do to get yourself set up with a ChatGPT account and download the app. Now for this next part, we're going to go right into the ChatGPT app on my Mac. You'll find it on my doc. Let's take a quick look around and get ourselves familiarized with how the ChatGPT app looks and functions. Up on the top side, we've got this little button, which can hide or show your sidebar.
42 Your sidebar is where all your conversations and chats live. So I recommend keeping it visible most of the time. To the right, we can start a new conversation or chat. We'll talk more about that in just a moment. In this section You'll see some of the most common ChatGPT tools including ChatGPT itself and its image creation tool Dolly, as well as its video creation tool, Sora. You may also see something called GPTs and any GPTs that you've already utilized. And right below that we'll find our projects section. We'll talk more about projects in just a moment, but projects are an easy way to organize and collect specific chats that are on the same topic. Coming down just a little bit further, we've got the most important part of ChatGPT, conversations or chats.
27 Every time you start a conversation with GPT, you end up with one of these chat conversations that you can utilize again and again and again. Chats are important because sometimes you want to set a chat up and reuse it time after time, but other times you may need to create individual chats for different purposes. Think of a conversation, like a discussion or chat with a specific expert. This is a chat with a YouTube tracking tool that I've created, but if I come down here, here is an email management expert teaching me and others how to manage their email more efficiently. Now to really understand how to use a conversation effectively, we're going to work with a little scenario.
13 Let's assume I'm about to do a big home improvement project. I'm going to need information about electricians, gardeners, landscapers, and maybe even an architect. To start with let's begin a brand new conversation by coming up here and clicking the new chat button. Here we get to do what's called a prompt. We'll talk more about a prompt in a moment, but anytime you're talking to ChatGPT or really any AI tool and you're telling them to do something, they call that a prompt. And there's a way to write a good prompt versus a bad prompt, which we'll talk about in a moment. Remember, ChatGPT is not Google, but many people use it like it is. So as we get started on this project and need to find an electrician, most people will come into a new conversation and say find the best electrician near me. It gives us some top rated electricians near me.
00 It gives me a map of where they're located and some other information. But you know what? It didn't do. It didn't give phone numbers. It didn't give me email addresses. It didn't give me specifics. This is because it's not Google. You're doing a Google search instead of giving it more specifics. We'll learn how to write a better prompt in just a few moments, but in the interim, when you're working with a conversation, if you don't get what you want, ask again something like this. Now, this prompt is a little bit more specific. It's asking for five recommendations, emails and phone numbers. Let's see how it does. Alright, now we're talking, here's some specific information and it's going to make it easy for me to connect with these people. That's a little bit of a better way to use GPT. But now let's assume that I'm done with the electricians and I now need to find
47 out about gardeners and landscapers. Many people will come into the conversation that they're already in and they'll just start a new prompt, something like this, and we'll go ahead and process that. It's not a terrible thing to do, but it's not taking advantage of what chats are good for. It gave us information, but once again, it didn't give us phone numbers or email addresses or websites, and on top of all of that, we're now mixing two different conversations. Remember each conversation is like talking specifically to an expert. If I'm talking to an electrician and I start asking him about gardening tools, he's not going to know the right information. So rather than polluting my electrician's conversation, I should have started a new chat specifically for the gardeners.
32 Let's do it with a better prompt telling it not only do I want them in my area, but I also want them to be no less than 20 miles away from me. And I want to include phone numbers, email addresses, websites, and references. Remember when you're creating a prompt, the more information you put in, the better the results are that you get on the other side. Let's see how we do here. It's a much better result than where we started, but now let's kick this up a notch because when you're talking about a gardener, you may need additional information. For example, when I hire a gardener, what questions should I ask to make sure they're going to do a good job for my house? Let's ask ChatGPT within our gardener's chat for that information. I've now created a prompt that asks for specific questions I should ask a gardener before hiring them.
17 Let's see how it does, and right here I've got very specific questions that I can ask any gardener. While I'm in this conversation. I can ask other gardening questions such as... And because it understands that we're talking about gardening, it's finding good information related to this conversation. If I come into our electrician's conversation and ask questions about gardening and ground cover, I'm not going to get great results. You would not ask your electrician how to mow the lawn. Remember that a chat is a way to hold on to multiple questions about a topic in one place. Sometimes you'll want to reutilize the same conversation. Other times you'll need to start a new conversation. Which brings us to the next piece of our lesson.
03 Here's where we want to start to talk about projects. Projects are more than just a folder that you can use to organize your chats. They're a way to store files and other information about a larger project. For example, if I'm doing this home improvement project, I may need to have a conversation about an electrician. A conversation about gardeners, a conversation about landscapers, and maybe even a conversation about an architect. So to do that, we're going to create a project that can hold all of those conversations together. Each chat is self-contained, so the things you talk about in one chat don't always carry over to the other chats. In the case of a home improvement project, I need to make sure that what I'm talking to the gardener about and what I'm talking to the electrician about connect somewhere
51 and projects are a great way to do that. I'm going to start by clicking the new project button and giving the project a name and clicking Create As you open up the project, it asks for specific instructions. You should consider this the prompt that begins all future chats. It should look a little something like this. Here I've created a basic prompt that gives this project the understanding that we're going to be hiring multiple people and it's part of the project's responsibility to keep track of that, letting it know that there's going to be tasks that we're going to need to follow up on, and letting it know that it has permission to communicate across the separate chats that we create within this project. And now any conversations that we start within this folder or project will be under the purview of the home improvement ai, and it will
37 begin to help us find the right people and keep track of the project. But in order to really build these conversations properly, we're going to need to know a little bit more about how to make a good prompt. Anytime you ask ChatGPT or any AI agent to do anything, it's called a prompt and prompts can be good or lazy and problematic. You don't want to create bad prompts because they create bad results that you then need to fix. If you're used to using ChatGPT, like Google and just asking questions like find me an electrician, that's not a very good prompt. We're going to create a better one using my 3 step prompt method. I call it the AIM method, as in.
24 Aim for success. The A is the agent. What is the role that you want this conversation to take? Let's give it a try. Just by giving it a role , we're already going to have better results. It's clear that it's not just anybody. It's a world class property manager, and it will use that information to find the results we're looking for. Which brings us to step two of creating a proper prompt that's the I of aim or the intent. The intent is what we want this prompt to do, what we're trying to create, or what we need ChatGPT's help with. Here we've added the intent in letting it know that we're getting ready for a home improvement project and giving it directions as to what it's going to need to do. It's going to need to help us find people, vet people, and
12 help us track their projects. Now, let's add the M from aim. The M stands for method. What is the method that you want this information delivered? How do you want it to look when it's finished? Here I'm letting it know that I want it to give me a list of the top three vendors for each of the categories we're talking about, and also to include phone numbers, email addresses, and websites for them. If I just go to Google and say, show me the best electricians. It's not good enough. I want GPT to do all of the work of building this project. Now that we've got our prompt set. Let's send it in and let's see what we get. Here we see amazing results, broken down into separate categories. Here are electricians, here are gardeners, here are architects. Here are landscapers.
58 I'm now ready to dive into this project without having to do 23 more searches or correct my prompt. You see, the goal is to aim for success right from the beginning. That way, when you create the prompt with the right agent, the right intent and the right method, you get the answers that you're looking for without having to argue with a machine, which is always a little bit frustrating. In this section we're going to discuss what is called an agent. And an agent is a pre-programmed GPT that already has prompts and instructions that you can take advantage of. So rather than starting over and building your own conversation or your own project, you can use a pre-existing GPT.
46 And since we just finished learning how to write a good prompt, I'm going to take advantage of a prompt creation GPT, just like this. For this, we're going to click on our sidebar where it shows gpt . You're going to find tons of pre-created gpt on tons of different categories, whether it's a Canva GPT, that can create designs or an astrology GPT that can do a birth chart or a humanizing GPT that can take writing created by artificial intelligence and make it sound human again. Any of these GPTs are amazing, but we're looking for a prompt engineer. So we're going to come up to the search and type in the word prompt. We're going to get a ton of results here and pay attention to how many conversations exist within that GPT.
31 This one that showed up at the top, prompt engineer has over a million conversations. That sounds like a good start. Let's click on that GPT and come down to the bottom where it says Start chat. Now, what I'd like to do with this GPT agent is I'd like to make a better prompt for our property manager. So let's come back to this conversation here, and let's copy this prompt that we created bring it in here and let's tell it what we're trying to do. I'm about to get involved in a home improvement project, and I need a ChatGPT prompt that is going to help me keep track of all of the different vendors and all of the different projects. Here's the prompt that I created. I want you to make it more efficient and more effective. Ask any questions you need to make it perfect.
18 And then I'm just going to paste our prompt right in. Click send and see what happens. Now, as we can see here, it liked our prompt. It felt like it was a solid foundation, and the task was clear, but it's going to give us some suggestions. You'll notice it's got questions that it needs to answer first. So let's answer those questions. When you're asked questions from GPT, you can ask it to ask them one at a time and wait for your answer, or you can respond to all of them at the same time. Let's respond. I'm going to click number one here. Do you want GPT to help track tasks and status for each vendor over time? Yes. Number two, would you like to define your project phases or types of work? Not now. And for three, are you expecting real-time contact info, web searches, or you planning to feed in vendor details manually?
06 I want real time web searches So I've now answered all of this GPT's questions. Let's send it back and it will give us the perfect prompt for what we're trying to do. Here we go. You are a world class property manager with expertise in overseeing multi-vendor home improvement projects. Your responsibilities, find and vet the top three vendors. Present the results in a clean table format for each vendor. , et cetera. It's created a much better prompt than we did. Let's click the copy button and let's come back and change the prompt. With that information, as soon as we feed it in, this conversation is updated with that new prompt and it's going to be even more effective than before. So as you can see, there are tons and tons of pre-created ChatGPT agents that
54 can help you get a specific job done. Whether that job is creating a better prompt or tracking your home improvement projects, coming into the GPT section will reveal a gold mine of tools helping you with everything from drawing images to writing projects, to productivity, programming, lifestyle. And more. So how are we doing? We've learned a ton so far today. We've learned how to log in and create a GPT account. We've learned about the importance of conversations and why sometimes you want to reutilize them and sometimes you need to create a new conversation. We've talked about creating projects that can hold multiple conversations together, and we've even talked about the basics of prompting as well as understanding how to use GPT agents, but there's just one more thing that
43 we need to talk about in just a moment. I'm going to reveal my MacWhisperer power tip, which is a tool so helpful that it's going to change everything you do moving forward. But before I do, if you've already gotten great value and learned a ton from this video, go ahead and give it a thumbs up that makes it so much easier for other people to find it. And if you've got a question, a comment, a prompt you'd like to share, drop it down in the comments section. I love my YouTube community and I love to connect with you guys. And if you haven't subscribed to my channel yet, we can ask GPT to do it. But it's pretty simple. You're just going to click that subscribe button and that notify bell, so you're always alerted whenever I drop new content. And with that being said, it's time for the power tip. We've learned so many cool tricks in this session that you're probably
31 wondering to yourself, what does Dylan have up his sleeve that can one up everything we've already learned? And the answer is creating your own custom GPT agent. We talked about GPT agents just a moment ago, and you've learned that you can find other people's GPT agents, but you can also make your own. And here's how you do it. But for this situation, we can't use the app. We've actually have to use the website. So let's come back to Safari and back to our ChatGPT page Here. Here on the left side, we see the GPT section. Let's click on it. It, but we've got something different on the website than what we saw on the app. That's right. Over here on the right, we have Create Your own GPT.
19 Now here, there's two ways you can do it. You can use the Guided Create System, which uses GPT to help you build your GPT, or you can come into the configure section and add your own information in. You can add an image if you'd like, and you can give it a name. I'm going to call it Dylan's assistant. When you create your own GPT, you want to give it a purpose, something like this. You are Dylan Stewart, the MacWhisperer's personal assistant, and you will respond to all of his requests using his unique tone and vibe, keeping it simple and easy. Now, coming down here, we're going to create the prompt that runs this agent and you can give it as much information as you want. In fact, you can even go back to the prompt engineer and let it help you build this prompt.
05 This is very, very important to make sure. It does its job properly, and in this case, we're creating a GPT to be an assistant. But you could create a GPT for anything. Like maybe you've got great tips about teaching children art, and you can use this to help build those tools. Or maybe you're starting a business and you want a business manager in your pocket, you can make one. Right here. I'm going to give it some basic instructions. You can always come back and add more as you go. But for this example, that's good enough. Down here we have something called conversation starters. And conversation starters are an easy way to get into a chat with basic information. So some might be. Give me suggestions for a new password. Tell me how to fix my iPhone. Give me recommendations for new Apple products.
52 Respond to the following email. Now, in addition to all of the conversation starters, we've also got what's called the knowledge bank. And the Knowledge bank is where you can upload any kind of file that you want. If you've got a transcript of a speech that you gave, you can upload that right here. If you've got a photograph of your favorite landscape in Hawaii, you can upload that here. If you've got smart guides or other tools, videos you want to reference, you can upload that here. You can upload a large number of separate files, whether they're documents, PDFs. Images or even movie files, right into this section here. Down here you can give your GPT agent certain capabilities. Does it have the ability to search the web? Can it see things on your computer screen? Can it create its own images?
37 And can it create code? Once you've put all the pieces together, click the create button and you'll be asked whether this is a GPT just for you. A GPT you want to share with select individuals by sending them a link or a GPT that you would like to be found on the GPT store with other public GPT agents. When you're done. click the save button and it's going to set everything up for you. Now, you may ask, what is the purpose of creating a GPT agent instead of having just a conversation, let me show you what we can do with it. For this, I'm going to come back to the app itself and we're going to go into my pre-created MacWhispererer assistant GPT, and ask it to solve a technical problem, and I can click send and it will create an answer to this prompt based on the
24 knowledge that I've added into this GPT agent, including a tone that sounds very much like it came from me, as well as information about how I personally solve problems just like this, you'll see it suggests clear the other system data out. It suggests offloading, unused apps. It suggests removing old iMessages with big attachments and deleting downloaded media. This is a perfect example of how to use a ChatGPT agent, and when I've created this conversation, it's going to show up along with the other conversations down here so I can come back to it in the future to ask additional questions. And now let's do one more thing using my ChatGPT agent. Let's come on into here, and add an image in by clicking the plus button. And choosing where it says Upload file.
11 This picture looks perfect. Let's add that. Now I can come in here and I can ask it specifically, use this image as a basis to create an image of Dylan waving with a speech bubble that says "thanks for watching. Don't forget to subscribe." And I can click the send button and in just a few moments we get an image that's perfect to use to say to all of you watching. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to subscribe. That's what we've got all about the ABCs of ChatGPT. I hope you learned a lot, but remember, there's always more to learn. Check out this video over here for even more amazing tips and tricks about how to use your Apple products efficiently and effectively.
56 I'm Dylan Stewart, the MacWhispererer, and I'll see you in the comments.
