0:00 [Music] [Applause] hey everybody this is the sliders review and welcome to a special edition of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage month and I'm here today to talk to you about Digimon the movie that came out in the year 20 2000 also Digimon Adventures the short 1999 our war games 2000 and hurricane touchdown 2000 honest to God I truly believe that
0:47 Digimon the movie might be the most famous and Infamous anime movie of all time and it's because of it like how it all came be I am a huge Digimon fan 01 is still to this day my all-time favorite season I love Digimon so much but honestly I haven't really been keeping up with it ever since Digimon Frontier I've tried to watch Data Squad I couldn't do that I tried to watch Fusion I really couldn't do that and so I didn't even know there were more Digimon Seasons after that mainly because
1:34 they've never been English dub and so when I found that out I looked at the intros and I'm just kind of like this does not look like Digimon the monsters are just completely different looking the digi VI are dig um different looking the humans look so generic now it's lost its f it's lost its flavor it's lost its identity and so you know over the years they've been trying to recapture that old one magic with the 2000 series and like you know the try movies and I think what it kiz or something like that and I
2:20 just haven't really been feeling it I don't like try I don't like the whatever that last k thing is I have not scene O2 Beginnings the only way to watch that is on One streaming app called hoopla and in order to watch that your like town has to have like you know Library access to it so you can watch it for free and if your library doesn't subscribe to hoopla then you can't watch it and that's totally stupid in my opinion it's really even to the point where not even marketing like it very well and stuff like that and it sucks cuz I just love Digimon you know what
3:06 I'm saying but back to the movie so like when this movie came out in 2000 my God I was probably in the the end of let's see when when did it come out in October so it was like my senior year of high school and so like you know this came came out around o after the first Arc in the O2 series and so like when I saw like the trailer and everything I was like oh my god when I saw the poster looking as epic as it does with like the older O2
3:52 cat no no the older um 01 cast the younger O2 cast and you saw like in the trailer know the younger old one cast in there so you knew I was like man this is going to be epic this is going to be like Off the Wall this is going to be insane you know 01 and 02 are going to like fight together to take on this evil it's going to be like the coolest most greatest thing I ever saw and then I bought it on VHS I watched it and I was was confused and [Laughter] frustrated I grew to despise that movie
4:39 but over the years in my adult life now you know I now have a fondness for it in my heart you know when I used to own it on VHS I never bought it on DVD and so I just kind of forgot about it after a while then I saw it on YouTube and I watch watch on YouTube I'm just like you know what I can like it for the Nostalgia I can like it for the craziness of finding out what this movie and how this movie came to be with the Digimon 3 shorts and everything and like you know so while I do not love this movie by no means I can learn to appreciate it and it has a soft spot in
5:26 my heart and you know there are some good moments in the movie but you know I just remember being very confused as like cuz you know it it's broken down into three animated shorts um Digimon Adventures R war games and like hurricane touchdown Which now every Digimon fan should know about that by now it's pretty common knowledge and everything like everybody talks about and it's all over the Internet and so I remember watching it thinking to myself okay the first part the first Arc of the movie like Digimon Adventures it's cute but I could care less about it only because it did not
6:13 tie in to the rest of the movie I didn't understand what this prologue or epilogue whatever you call them things was about and I knew it connected to the television series you know for that attack on heighten B ter and everything but I didn't understand how it connected to the rest of the movie other than trying to re-explain like you know what Digimon was and how they all the kids came about to um be Digi destines and stuff like that now the other two movies the other two acts yeah those are more closely tied together the way like sabon entertainment combined them together I'm like okay I can follow this one a bit
6:58 more but I didn't understand like why like you know first we had the Digimon Adventure thing and then I didn't understand in our war games why it was only Matt TK Izzy and Tai I'm all like everybody else is missing I'm like why are they written to be missing out of the movie like I didn't understand that whatsoever and as much as I like those characters I wanted to to see the other characters I wanted to see the other Digimon I wanted them to go to the freaking Digital World which in all three shorts and like you know they never go to the digital world that's one
7:45 of the major things about Digimon they go to the digital world and so that really pissed me off in there there I was like dude what what what what is this about so I was livid I was frustrated at how they didn't go to the digital world and how most of the characters just got written out in the dumbest way possible and stuff I'm all like what the heck is this crap like what is saon doing to me but then I'm like what are the like Japanese artists doing to me and everything then you get to Hurricane touchdown Which I still don't understand why it's called hurricane touchdown I'm like okay here come the old2 kids
8:32 and then I'm all kind of like wait hold up where's Ken at they just defeated him and everything but that's because they just defeated him he went off on his own and he didn't like get back with the group until like the second Arc of o2 so I'm like okay that that can explain that way all right fine you know what I'm saying but then they introduced the character of Willis which you know who was tied into the U second half of like you know the movie the second art and so I'm like okay cool like we got an American like Digi Destin like that's awesome like I'm an American and like what twin digimons he has too he is still to this well no actually no no longer is he cuz he at that time
9:17 he was the first and only person to have two Digimon but as we all know as time passes like with new frontier and stuff like that you can have multiple Digimon and so like as I'm watching that I'm just kind of like okay where are the old one kids at shouldn't they be here shouldn't they be helping out um they talking about how they visiting like TK and car about how they visiting like MiMi in New York but you don't see Mimi in everything and then TK and Ki are barely in the movie and then it left me with the three annoying new Digi Destin from O2 like oh
10:04 God not them but at least Willis was cool and everything and a terer m who became my new favorite Digimon it used to be patamon but oh my god dude teron was just too cute and adorable and so like I'm all like okay where the heck is 0an people at like where are they at like I don't get it like what's going on and then like I was all like why is the action so bizarre in like hurricane touchdown it's like the action like you know when the Digimon like you know try to fight like the evil Digimon they're just acting all turkey
10:51 jerky bopping around and then like you know when they armor dig evolve they don't even fight it it's like you know like drill man and um hoson it's like dude what are you doing like you're not even fighting a dude you just jumping and bouncing around and everything and flying and you're not doing nothing I was pissed and then they're saying stupid stuff I'm like what the world's up with this dialogue and then I'm all like what's the deal with like Anam and Anja woman going to Mega and everything and they have Digi EGS inside their body like what the heck I'm like what am I watching didn't understand none of this
11:39 and the animation was different cuz it was like a different studio and a different style and I'm just kind of like I don't understand what's going [Music] on and I just remember being pissed off growing up so many years years I was just pissed off and then of course when the internet became the internet and everything like you know I found out oh okay so sabon did his sabon this and everything he had his people chop up a bunch of scenes and just like make it into like a movie which he's Infamous for doing that man likes to cut corners and stuff he was synonymous with doing
12:25 that with like Power Rangers like well mighty morph from Power Rangers and mega force also with VR Troopers and big bad Beetle borgs and stuff the man knows how to cut slice and edit some footage boy let me tell you and so like to find out it was like over 40 minutes of like material left out of the movie and so I was like for for so long for nearly 20 years I'm just kind of like man I really want to watch um our war games I really want to see hurricane touchdown I really want to see you know
13:11 digital Adventures or whatever it's called and I'm just kind of like cuz I never got to see that so I was always wondering what the uncut versions were like you know what I'm saying and so I was able to find like um fan dub of our war games and hurricane touchdown but not of the first one but then a miracle happened they decided to re-release the entire thing on Blu-Ray so you got the Digimon um movie how it was the Digimon movie and stuff then the three Digimon shorts like you know they um decided to leave them as they are with the original Japanese music and it was going to be English dub with the original cast
13:58 coming back well those who are still alive that is and so I'm like dude this is awesome and stuff I finally now get to see it man I can't believe what all they cut out oh oh oh oh oh by the way I know it's not Asian um Pacific Islander appreciation month I know that that was a couple of months ago but I did not feel like waiting an entire year just to put this whole video out so yeah I know and and so like with this like new version and stuff or technically the original version yeah I was kind of like hm I wonder how people voices going to sound 20 years later and everything and for
14:44 the most part some of them sound the same like the dude U who plays Tai yeah his voice has gotten slightly older and slightly scratchier saying with the dude who voiced his mat and the new actor who voices Joe like um the dude did a pretty good job like he's very close to sounding like the original Joe and so for the most part like I was like cool with this like um redubbing and everything but then you know in the back of my head my mind's all like I remember how they said it this way and how the tone was more emphasized and so like
15:29 sometimes they would say things slightly different which kind of like bugged my memory and everything but for the most part I still enjoyed it but one thing I missed with the three shorts was the American Music look I'm an American all right I grew up with Digimon I grew up with the American songs I miss those like you know let's kick it up like I I love that stuff you know what I'm saying and so like when I was hearing the original Japanese music which you know I'm not Japanese and yes this is a cultural thing it's like you know I'm not used to hearing that and the music just doesn't resonate with me the same way as the American Music cuz the American Music Hypes it up whenever
16:14 there's an action battle scene and stuff and here it's just more like Pleasant type music and and mellowness and everything and I'm not used to hearing that and stuff you know and so it was just very jarring for me because my my mind couldn't assimilate that okay this is a big action scene like where's the music to Hype it up but then there is no music to Hype it up it's just very pleasant and mellow and stuff like that also there are some scenes where it's just kind of like you know um the dialogue is just so different and stuff like you know I'll get into those when I do individual like you know um sections of this video doing
17:00 like the shorts and everything like I couldn't believe like how different the dialogue is like hurricane touchdown is a completely different movie from Digimon the movie man I'm just like man they really rework that movie in the original anime and stuff and not only that but Willis personality is completely different in the Japanese version he's just so much Ruder and everything I'm like dud like I used to like Willis I'm like thank God they changed him in the American version and by the way I've noticed this when it comes to like Power Rangers or watching the Senai or other anime stuff when it depicts
17:47 Americans seriously this what they think of us sometimes that we're just like all rude and can't drive and driving like maniacs and kids um hitchhiking on the side of the road with complete strangers and like is that really what they think of us yes we do drive like maniacs and yes people in this country are just nasty rude and stuff like that and but it's like come on now not everybody's like that and as for the hitchhiking thing a lot of people don't do that no more because it became too dangerous and what was the deal with the woman in the Jeep as like watching the train pass by she was dressed like a hoochie mama like a little country girl with those short shorts and everything I'm all like
18:34 hm now they cut this scene and I think I know why they cut that scene most likely in the Japanese dub she's standing there in frustration sorry about that had to yawn she's standing there in frustration waiting for the train to like pass on by but in the minds of most people people might assume okay wait a minute like with them short shorts on is she waiting for somebody is she like a street walker something like that is she waiting for somebody to like you know um hitchhike on the train and wait from to get off so she can take them where they have to go I can understand why people might assume
19:21 that and oh my god dude I couldn't believe Tai's father being drunk it's like dude but like you know I remember um whatever that dude Nemo um name is the last um um I forget his name oh I'm tired I forget that dude's name he voices um tenton and everything um something Nemo who's related to um of course the Spock actor Leonard neore like um he said originally that the Digimon movie was only supposed to be the first two anime shorts but you know saon entertainment
20:06 they really wanted hurricane touchdown and that to incorporate the O2 cast so they had to like get very creative and stuff and creative they did like you know after all these years it's like like I said I've grown to appreciate Digimon the movie with like you know the cut down scene cuz there was a lot of stuff that really did need to be cut out of like the original shorts because it just went flow well and some of it t cuz they tend to linger on scenes way too much like with the train scene and some of the extra dialogue in there and you know and like
20:52 um I like the American Music a lot more and you know and the reference to Dior man being the one to affect Coco like I like that I like that tie-in and stuff you know what I'm saying so I just grown to appreciate to like you know the American version a whole lot more and like of course um it's funny when you watch the Blu-ray cuz they Incorporated the Digimon recap um which if you had the VHS of course you remember before the movie started it was like a digimon recap of 01 maybe 02 I'm not sure but it was just fun to watch like recapping there tonight yeah I remember
21:38 that and stuff and it's on the Blu-ray and but it hasn't been remastered it's still the original footage with the little bar static line at the bottom of like the video and it couldn't remas that come on now but of course we can't talk about Digimon the movie without first talking about the thing that came um before the movie that's left out of the Blu-ray because of copyright and that is none other than Angela andaconda so this premiered right before the Digimon movie and it's her and her people going to see Digimon the movie and then she has her hallucinations
22:24 where she is like tie kind of and she has like Digimon and she's fighting against like um nette vanoir and everything and her teacher and it's the craziest thing ever and I can't believe they left it out of the Blu-ray like come on man get that copyright a lot of people hate this but I found it to be cute a lot of people hate the and um Angela and Thea series but I personally adore it I I I watched it when it came out I love things that are different and it was just fun to watch and you can watch it on streaming on Roku channel so the first Arc of this movie
23:13 is from the first short it's either called Digimon Adventures or digital Adventures I think it's called Digimon Adventures it came out in Japan in 1999 and so like this is kind of like a prologue to the rest of the movie and in the movie is narrated by Ki like the entire movie is but here it is not and instead only in the beginning it's narrated by an older Tai and he talks about what happened four years ago now in the Digimon movie it was 8 years ago but here in the Japanese dub it's like 4 years
24:00 ago and one thing that always confused me about this was why was aaman so ginormous in the movie as well as the like you know Japanese dub and so by doing some research it turns out that this was just supposed to be a short and nothing more and then it later LED in into that of the television series and so while they were being created around the same time and stuff for the television series they had to rework this digital short and everything and so this is why aiman is so huge in
24:45 like you know the original short but short in like the television series and stuff cuz they wasn't quite sure you know how things were going to be presented when they did just the original Short and so I totally get that you know what I'm saying cuz I just remember being so confused as to like why is aiman here because you know this also plays in to an episode of Digimon Adventures 01 where like you know the digi Destin first encountered a digimon when they all lived in height and view terrce they had kind of forgotten about that until their memor started to flood back cuz they were so young and it was Ty and Ki who uh found the Digimon that hatch from an
25:31 egg in the computer and so but you know you never got to see aimon in that flashback only Greymon fighting parrotmon and so here it's completely different and so even though I didn't like this part in the like movie I do like it as just a short you know what I'm saying cuz it's a nice tie in to the television series and so it depicts a very young young Tai and an extremely young Ki and so basically like you know there's a Digi egg on the computer it hatches and bamon like appears to them and there's a lot more interaction between them and bamon and then like you know he later did evolves into
26:18 coron and there's like you know scenes that would deleted of him like kissing both of them on like the lips and stuff like that and so basically is just two little infant type kids you know just oh we got this pet and Ty doesn't want to keep it and Ki likes it and Ki will talk to coron but she doesn't talk to Tai she only just whistles at him and so like you know at some point their drunken father like comes in and which is completely taken out of like the English dub and stuff and I couldn't believe they they they wrote that but then you know like he later dig evolves into aimon and then Ki gets on
27:05 his back they go outside and they just start exploring the streets and you know he rips open like the soda machine and then all of a sudden the sky itself turns into a giant Digi egg it cracks open and here comes parrotmon um aimon and them like aimon um gets attacked by parmon he dig evolves into that of greymond and So like um you know Tai is looking for his sister K's like all like sad and stuff and um actually know before he disolves into greymond like you know aimon is getting his butt kicked and like then he
27:51 dig evolves into greymond and like tons of other little kids and people can see this the other kids who see is are the future Digi destines and they don't know each other and but in the English D apparently they do know each other at least some of them do and they start calling each other and stuff like that and but in the original dub you know like they don't know each other they're not calling one another and stuff like that so later when grey gets his butt Ki they decide they're going to use the whistle to wake him up K too young and and it's like crying and tearing up and snotting up it looks like she's sick or something like that which we know in the um original series she used to get sick
28:38 a lot and that's why she missed like summer camp and so Tai uses the whistle to wake like Greymon up and then he defeats parrotmon and they both disappear and then years later the kids forgot about this I remember when I watched this in like you know the original movie I'm just like how the heck is what's his name able to digivolve without a Digivice I was like so confused at that time but I remember in the show you know Ty tells coron hey I remember when you came to like you know my hometown and everything like that and blah blah it's greymond and he's all like I don't remember doing that so I was always wondering could this be that like you know aimon or was
29:25 it a completely different one cuz at that time time I think that was the only aimon we ever saw because it wasn't until 02 where we got to see oh wait there are actually more Digimon that look like are Digimon and stuff like that um and they have the same name they just act like different and stuff and so I remember always just being like really really confused by that and stuff but for the most part I've grown to really like respect this short a whole lot more it's a whole lot cuter in the Japanese dub than it is in that of like you know the movie and stuff like that I just wish it could have tied in better to like the movie but you know it is what it is our war games that came
30:14 out in 2000 now this one is action packed and there's a lot of drama and suspense in this one and so that's both in the movie and in the Japanese dub but I still to this day am frustrated that the other Digi Destin and Digimon didn't get to do nothing I will forever be pissed off about that and I will never forgive the the writers for not incorporating them in there more cuz I wanted to see them you know what I'm saying I get it Ty and Matt are the two main ones you can't have Matt without TK and of course Izzy and like you know um is the brains and so he had to be in there and Izzy and Tai used to always get along really well
31:00 but still I wanted to see an epic battle and so like in the Japanese dub it's spring break but in that of the American one is summer break and so for the most part this story is exactly the same as in both English and in Japanese dub it's just little differences here and there in some scenes that are cut out and so like it's been about 4 years since um I think it's been about 4 years since they defeated no wait it couldn't have been four years CU Cari is still young in this but I remember it saying four years
31:47 in the American one anyways um what is it so Tai is piss because he pissed off um SAR and she doesn't want to like you know contact him or talk to him or email him and and the Japanese dub she actually blocked him and it all has to do with like I know in the Japanese dub it's a paper clip that he bought her and she thought oh you don't like my hats and you don't like my hair and blah blah blah and it was stupid teenage stuff but in the American one I forget what they argue about I think because
32:33 something I had to do about her hat or he made fun of her paperclip or made fun of her hair or something like that and so like he's just like his little buttthe headed self being pissed for the summer and then Izzy's on his computer and he discover something very odd there's a Digimon on the on the internet and stuff and so in the so he goes to investigate and he goes over Tai's place and because he tells him you know like the Digimon egg has like hatched and all this other stuff and somehow it formed on like the internet and cuz you know like they had to like take care of it so they get contacted by like the Digimon in the digital world
33:19 and Jedi and he tells them about it and talking about how this is evil and this is nothing like the Dark Masters and you know and so they have to take care of it and contact the others while he tries to upload the Digimon onto the internet server this is back during the days of doll up and stuff like that that's in the English dub man and so like in the also in the English dub it was I believe um was it what what was it I know it was Willis that created um this um viral type thing that became like a digital um egg and stuff he was trying to create his own Digimon and
34:06 then he ended up creating like a virus or something like that that infected the Digimon or something like that and later become like di Boron and stuff and in the English dub it was like looking for him now in the Japanese dub I think it's just a regular Digimon I don't think a virus actually corrupted it I don't think but it's just evil it's one of those viral type Digimon and stuff and he just wants to destroy and Destroy and blow stuff up and you know stuff like that so Tai is trying to contact everybody but can't get a hold of nobody Matt and TK are visiting their grand um grandmother in the Country Joe is trying to do his entrance exam Sora
34:52 is pissed off at him Mimi is an American not American but she's an americ on a vacation and stuff I think that's everybody and so like you know he's just getting more frustrated at the minute and so in the English dub his mom is trying to create all these different like you know um Entre and stuff like that and she's mixing all kind of weird ingredients together and so she's making like these shakes and she gives it to Izzy and they cause him to have like diarrhea but in the Japanese dub she
35:38 just gives him regular tea and he drinks so much that he just has to [Laughter] pee and so the Digimon H what was that digimon's name something with a p um oh God what was I just keep calling him U infon when he did your balls and de Bor but it's something else it is no not P or K I think it's Kon or something like that and so that's like you know his I guess rookie stage or whatever and so like he's just eating data and stuff like that and in the Japanese dub like you
36:25 know Izzy gets information on this thing and helps figure stuff going on by online friends but in the English dub they try to tie it in to that hurricane touchdown by saying it's Willis that's contacting him and he doesn't know who this Willis kid is but he's really smart and he seems to know a lot about Digimon and stuff this was interesting to how they create their own footage to tie that into like you know the overall like you know plot of the movie and stuff and so as like tenton and aimon are in the internet the internet looks cool in this like I got to give it up it's not the digital world but at least it looks cool so they're trying to do their best to fight him and they're getting their butts kicked and so kids
37:13 all around the world and adults can watch this on the internet and so like we even see a young y Le but then I think also the tight end we see like a young Davis and stuff like that that's in the um English dub but in the the Japanese dub there's no Davis and stuff and no Willis and so like the phone system is messing up it's the Digimon the evil one that's like corrupting the phone line so nobody can get through but in the English dub he's trying to find Willis and so finally they're able to get in contact with other Digi Destin because of like a voicemail system now a going English dub they only leave a
37:59 message and then Matt and TK they listen to it and they try to find a computer and the Japanese dub they constantly leaving messages over and over to one another and so Matt and TK they go to like a barber shop to where like their Uncle drove them uh so they can use the internet but in the Japanese dub they constantly go to like neighbor after neighbor house and then they find this one couple arguing and then the the husband decides to give them a ride on his like moped which they don't even know to do but whatever and so like now like you know pamon and gotaman they no not gotaman yeah it is gotaman I think they join
38:45 like you know the fight and they realized that infermon is not a champion he just bypassed champion and went straight to Ultimate and everything and while they're still getting their but kit um he dig evolves into doramon and he accesses like you know the computers and he sends off like a nuke and he sends off like two or something like that one he's sending to Colorado where Willis is in the English dub but in the Japanese dub he sent it towards Izzy and Matt not Izzy and Matt but Izzy and um Ty and so like you know aaman and Gan they warp dig evolve and
39:30 they're still getting their butts kick but they're not going to give up so like you know they're still persistent and trying to fight and you know we get that moment of like both Digimon are like so wiped out that both Tai and Matt somehow transcended into the internet and and gave their Digimon some extra breath of like life and everything and that's where they fused together into DNA digivolving into omnimon now omnimon can talk in the American version but he cannot in the Japanese one also infon and doraman they do not talk in the Japanese dub but they
40:17 do in the English this is DNA digivolving which will take place in the show but you know in O2 but you know like um they had no name for it in like the original shorts and so as Izzy is realizing something that all the emails the kids are sending him are like slowing down their Digimon so he has the bright idea to forward all that to do boraman because di boraman is way too fast after that they're able to strike him down defeating him in like the Japanese dub and but in the Eng dub he's defeated but a like a a teeny tiny smidgen of him is able to affect cocoon
41:06 and everything over in America now in the English dub there are way more jokes um corny jokes too but I actually appreciate those corny jokes some of them some of them are really funny like the cat www and then the cat like meow and it's like. I love that man that's awesome and but you know in the Japanese one it's a tad bit more serious and stuff touchdown hurricane so this is the last Arc and the last short and whether it's the Japanese one or the American one I am so confused by so much that's going on in this but I will say I actually prefer the American
41:54 version of this better only because the Japanese one is even more confusing than stuff like even after like you know who these characters are some of the dialogue like you know just doesn't always make sense to me and like I also don't like how the kids are constantly hitchhiking around a country that they don't live in and it just feel like so unsafe at least when they do it in the American one um you know it's will is just running away from home and you know um cokan trying to find him and like um as opposed to him just wandering around the country by himself and everything trying to get back to where it all began
42:40 and all this other stuff and I like how Yoli supposedly has all these uncles like I guess like in America and all this other stuff and that's how they're able to get like all these rides and all this other stuff as opposed to them just like driving around in a crazy like you know um taxi cap driver dude or just hitchhiking with complete strangers and stuff they also took out um all the U Willis mom fat jokes and everything that was left in the Japanese dub so they took that out the American dub also like Will's personality even though he's a loner in both versions he is so much more nicer in the American version and
43:25 like the Japanese version I did not recognize this dude at all because of his grouchy personality and stuff also in the Japanese dub Davis is way more annoying I hate Davis so much but at least in the American one he's a little bit more tolerable just a little bit and so you know um also the pacing in the America one is a whole lot more because they cut down a lot like it's 70 minutes in the Japanese dub and they had to present that as two different movies in Japan and stuff and but I I just prefer the American dub more because it's more linear and they
44:12 took out all the unnecessary like kffl and stuff like that you know what I'm saying and so in this version you have TK and Ki and they're in America visiting Mimi and you can actually see them visiting Mimi um in the Japanese dub she's doing something with her laptop at like a pay phone and all of a sudden she disappears the reason for it is is because there is a subplot that was completely left out of the American version see I'm just going to call him cookon for now because like I can call him um um I'll just call him that for now um or his but he's also known as Indigo man
