Intro and Disclaimers

The host, Aman, introduces the episode and provides disclaimers, including a warning about language and spoilers for "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan." He also clarifies that the views expressed are those of the individual hosts and not necessarily of the podcast as a whole. Aman then jokingly advises listeners to enjoy their childhood while it lasts, before the harsh realities of adulthood set in.

Podcast Introduction

Jamal, the podcaster, introduces the episode's topic: the dub of "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan." He is joined by Stephanie, Noah, and Andrew. Jamal explains his personal connection to the show, citing the interesting characters, his own apathy, and the existential crisis the show induced. Stephanie expresses her excitement for the episode.

Why This Anime?

Jamal explains why he chose to cover "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan," citing his connection to the main character's apathetic nature and the existential crisis the show triggered. He wanted to share this experience with the viewers. Stephanie mentions that she and Jamal were initially the only ones interested in doing an episode on the show.

Show's Premise

The podcast describes the premise of "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan": Uramichi, a miserable 31-year-old, hosts a children's TV show with two grown men in animal costumes and a short-tempered singing woman. The show contrasts the upbeat nature of children's programming with Uramichi's cynical outlook on life. The hosts note that the premise of adults hosting a live-action kids show with interacting children is rare in American television today, having been largely replaced by animated series and YouTube vlogs.

Modern Children's Entertainment

The hosts discuss the current landscape of children's entertainment, noting the dominance of animated series and YouTube vlogs featuring kids and their parents playing games. They mention Blippi as a popular example of an adult performer who teaches life lessons to children through YouTube videos. The hosts find the premise of "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan" to be alien compared to modern children's programming.

ADR Production Staff

The hosts discuss the ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) director, Chris George, and scriptwriters, Aierly this Buke. They also mention the music staff, Don Bennett and Emmy Low, who adapted the songs for the show. The hosts celebrate Chris George's birthday and joke about doing a "rad Robert" for ADR group 40 characters.

Dubbed Songs

The hosts express their surprise and appreciation that the songs in "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan" were dubbed into English, which is not always a priority during simulcasts. They praise the quality of the singing and the lyrics, noting that they are simple and appropriate for children. The hosts joke about the show being shown in preschools, imagining the teachers relating to the content more than the children.

Cringy Songs and Japanese Honorifics

The hosts discuss the cringy and corny nature of some of the songs, emphasizing that this is intentional. They mention a conversation with Aaron Dismuke, who confirmed that the use of Japanese language elements like "konichiwa" was deliberately cringy. The hosts agree that keeping the Japanese side of things merits the show because this is such a Japanese-centric programming.

Dark Comedy and Script Writing

The hosts express their excitement about discussing the show's dark comedy, a genre they don't often cover. They compare the show to "Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei" and note that the script and music adaptations are brilliantly done. The hosts praise Chris George's directing for maintaining the comedic timing and preventing the characters from becoming too exaggerated.

Vernacular Phrases and Subtitles

The hosts appreciate the use of vernacular phrases in the script, which contrasts with the on-set dialogue. They express a desire for Crunchyroll to offer subtitles with the dub to understand the original lines. The hosts transition to discussing the characters in groups of five.

Child Actors

The hosts briefly discuss the child actors, praising their performances and noting that the dark humor doesn't come off as creepy. They emphasize that Uramichi genuinely cares about the kids. One of the hosts asks about a specific hairstyle seen on some of the girls in the show.

Merchandise and TV Staff

The hosts introduce the characters who work behind the scenes: Kikaku, who works in merchandising, and two directors, one of whom is literally named "Director." They describe Kikaku as a miserable goth who is in charge of deciding new products to keep the show going. The hosts joke about the lazy names of the directors.

Vince K Kappalidi

The hosts introduce Vince K Kappalidi, the choreographer, who they describe as looking like a gay boba bro. They mention that Kappalidi has a thing for Usahara. The hosts list the voice actors for these characters: Yog Bosche, Steven Food, J Michael Tatum, Eric Phil, and David Wald.

Kikaku

The hosts discuss Kikaku, noting Johnny Yong Bosch's performance as an angry and furious character. They describe Kikaku's meltdowns and his interactions with Uebu, who posts non-existent merchandise online. The hosts contrast Kikaku's rage with his cheerful demeanor when he's not having a meltdown.

Uebu and JYB's Range

The hosts discuss Uebu's limited role in the show and Johnny Yong Bosch's range as a voice actor. They note that Bosch doesn't often play major roles anymore but is still a naturally good voice to listen to. The hosts mention some of Bosch's previous roles, such as Ichigo Kurosaki and Vash the Stampede.

Steven Food as Uebu

The hosts describe Steven Food's performance as Uebu as unassuming and intentionally flat. They note his dry sense of humor and his disinterest in 3D women. The hosts mention Uebu's interactions with Kikaku at the end-of-year wrap party.

Aman Director

The hosts discuss J Michael Tatum's role as Aman Director, noting that he is less standout-ish than the other characters. They appreciate the wide range of people in the entertainment industry, from those passionate about their work to those just there for a paycheck. The hosts describe Aman as wanting to leave his mark on the world but not knowing what kind of program he's making.

Eric Vale as Director

The hosts discuss Eric Vale's performance as Director, noting that he is good at playing characters you want to punch. They compare his voice to those of old Hollywood directors and note that he is oblivious to the [ __ ] he does. The hosts mention a story about Eric Vale expressing his dislike for a particular show he worked on.

David Wald as Kappalidi

The hosts praise David Wald's performance as Kappalidi, noting his stoicism and professionalism. They emphasize that Kappalidi is a strong, independent woman who wants Usahara. The hosts appreciate Wald's ability to play fabulous characters and mention some of his other roles.

Usahara, Kumatani, Iketero, and Utano

The hosts introduce the main characters: Usahara, Kumatani, Iketero, and Utano. They discuss their backgrounds, personalities, and voice actors: Ray Chase, Howard Wang, Brandon McInnis, and Jessica Calvello. The hosts note that Usahara and Kumatani went to school together and that the characters have crossed paths before.

Ray Chase as Usahara

The hosts discuss Ray Chase's performance as Usahara, noting that it is different from his usual roles. They appreciate his ability to play an idiot who can't read a room. The hosts mention a scene where David Wald strikes Usahara in the nuts.

Howard Wang as Kumatani

The hosts discuss Howard Wang's performance as Kumatani, noting that he is the dry and serious character who delivers bear puns well. They appreciate his grounded nature and his defining moment of quitting a job because his boss was being a [ __ ]. The hosts mention that Kumatani was a delinquent in high school.

Brandon McInnis as Iketero

The hosts discuss Brandon McInnis's performance as Iketero, noting that he is the funniest character and has a dirty mind. They appreciate his youthful tone and his airheadedness. The hosts mention a scene where Iketero is disappointed that there won't be a pillow fight.

Jessica Calvello as Utano

The hosts discuss Jessica Calvello's performance as Utano, noting that she has great pipes and used to work in children's theater. They appreciate that her voice is lower than expected and doesn't mimic a cutesy moe voice. The hosts mention that Utano is saddled with the stereotypical female problem of wanting to get married.

Adam Gibbs as Uramichi

The hosts discuss Adam Gibbs's performance as Uramichi, noting that he has a pension for deadpan characters. They appreciate his ability to switch between his customer service voice and his sad, depressed voice. The hosts mention a scene where Uramichi has to do an advice segment with a puppet.

Final Thoughts

The hosts share their final thoughts on the show, praising its biting edge, strong dub, and well-cast characters. They note that the show is not for everyone, as it deals with dark comedy and self-deprecating humor. The hosts discuss the show's themes of depression, mid-life crisis, and the struggles of adulthood.

Where to Watch and Support the Podcast

The hosts provide information on where to watch the show and how to support the podcast. They mention that the show is available on Funimation and Crunchyroll, but there are some complexities regarding the streaming options. The hosts encourage listeners to leave comments with any clarifications. They also provide links to their social media accounts and other projects.

0:46 that become so involved and time-consuming that you start to wonder why you thought they were fun in the first place enjoy your free time while you have it kids cause if you don't you'll be filled with regret until you die enjoy abc abc abc [Music] hello there boys and girls and welcome to the ducktalk podcast i'm your podcaster jamal dory side and i'm here today with my eclectic group of friends big sister stephanie sad the world is on fire this is fine

1:34 i need more coffee yes sir that's the old [Laughter] and i animated puppy noah [ __ ] now if you give me a heads up i could have got my kermit voice ready here let me get right here oh that part do you ever find yourself in another part of the world with a beautiful house with a beautiful wife how did i get here okay now now do lido shuffle [ __ ]

2:20 i can't do that but i will recommend all you people if you're if you're muppets fans and you haven't seen it already check out the debbie harris the debbie harry episode from the original run it's amazing hey and tonight we're going to have ourselves a little fur because boys and girls we have a special treat for you tonight we will be covering the dab of life lessons with umichi odissa yes yeah the the valuable treat of existential dread as you enter into your 30s i turned 33 last week oh so you can buy us alcohol nice as someone who is in her early 30s as well yeah

3:08 i can't believe i'm the same age as yo so i have to ask jamal there are hundreds if not thousands of dubbed anime movies and tv shows that we've never covered before right hey why did this one stand out to you oh for the most part a of the same interesting character bm say i'm also as apathetic as him and see this show gave me an existential crisis that could affect all of dub talk forever is it did this show invoke the opposite reaction that real life did kind of yes uh especially when you get

3:55 to episode two oh boy and you wanted to share that with the rest of the viewers and us by proxy well because shane is coming sharing is very much caring yes you get to feel the existential dread along with us ladies and gentlemen it's going to be a fun [ __ ] night oh joy i'm excited about this one really yes because originally originally before we got everything together i think jamal and i were the only ones who were interested in getting an episode like this off the ground to the point that we were gonna do a fight pit for hosting duties and the only reason why

4:41 so i let jim i'm letting jamal host it the only reason is because one work two i just got over being sick so oh i'm like i'm just gonna do it and i am the proud owner of a [ __ ] rescue inhaler whoop-dee-doo yay i remember back in christmas when you were a kid it was like wow i got hot wheels or wow i got the newest video game now it's holy [ __ ] i got a rescue inhale this is awesome thanks doc yeah thanks doc but in case you're wondering boys and girls what exactly is this show about well let me tell you a little story

5:27 erbichimotus 31 umichi appears our children's tv show and locks out two grown men dressed as force creatures and a singing woman with a very short fuse she leads little kids with exercises and answers their questions about life but uh michi's life is pain um just wants to be miserable at peace but his words there are games that don't add even after you forfeit like life for example yes despite wanting to curl up in a ball and just let the let the the ocean swallow you whole you've still got to pay rent oh yeah you take whatever job you can yep [Music] oh goody our capitalist nightmare will never end

6:13 it's the fun and evidence goes on my friends i'm glad you brought that up jamal oh god okay this [ __ ] before we really get into the dub itself uh this shows premise around uh adults hosting a live action kids show where the kids uh interact with them on set doesn't really exist in american television anymore it used to we used to have puppet shows where the kids would interact with the puppets we would have live-action hosts and the kids would hang out in the studio and it's to my understanding that's still kind of a thing in japan then there's barney which is very old again i'm saying it doesn't really exist anymore no i know

6:58 but barney's also a similar premise it is but there has it hasn't really been its heyday is past the lord almighty the programming that your kids are watching nowadays because i'm going to assume that most of you are not up on your modern uh kids entertainment right i do not currently have a child same i i have a fur baby but that doesn't i don't think my fur baby watches tv i i still watch power of ages so uh i'll be i'll be honest no as far as the podcast goes you have unique insight into what actual children watch so please enlighten us that doesn't make me feel any better no i was like goddammit why won't you all procreate i can't be the only one anymore stop it oh oh no i'm not

7:45 bragging i'm not complaining about that at all but take your time please pretty please the thing i was gonna bring up is that children these days are not watching these uh you know adults interacting with other kids in the studio kind of shows uh it's either going to be an animated series uh 98 of the programming on pbs kids nickelodeon nick jr playhouse disney all of that is animated programming if it's live action it's not actually going to be something on network television youtube has absolutely ruined this generation because the hot thing is live action vlogs where kids and their parents play games and toys and even video games together you've probably heard of ryan's toy review even if you're not into kids you may know of

8:31 that channel that is a very popular one there's that there's kid city which is another kind of ripoff of that there's lots of let's play channels that are kids and their parents playing uh video games together and then you get if there is an adult with no uh who's like uh teaching life lessons it's probably someone who's not really interacting with kids directly case in point the most popular children's uh adult performer these days is blippi blippi what's a blippi he's blind wait i was waiting i was like i'm winning is there's going to be any dawn of recognition amongst this group here and there's not because you've never had to be searched this okay subjected to this it's a youtube channel of a very uh upbeat man

9:18 uh he's got basically he goes around the world uh teaching kids lessons that are not really that bad it's like colors shapes uh he's got a really popular song about an excavator yes the farm equipment okay that is what the kids are really into nowadays so this premise here of let's have people in weird costumes just kind of uh interacting with the kids in a sound studio not really anything that we have anymore which makes it even the more alien to try to watch it's like my kids would not sit down and watch this no no after he described blippi i got a vague hit of wrecking did he get did he get the news a couple years ago for doing something distinctly not kid friendly like not bad just like i would talk about like we have been

10:04 levels that kind of oh god i'm not no no i don't i don't think it was that bad it was just like that's a weird thing for kids entertainer to do like like very much like if you're a random individual you probably think like that's weird and move on with your life it is only that he has mild internet notoriety that made it known i went to blippi's [ __ ] youtube channel and the trailer started playing it's very loud it's it's very uh it's not for you it's not for you i'm not gonna go out of my way and say it's cringe exactly it's like we we weren't any better with our uh entertainment when we were younger it's for its exact target demographic i'm i'm just taking a peek i'm like apparently i'm watching blippi explores a boat

10:49 do you like boats kids i mean in fairness kids dude like boats flippy wonders the floor is lava imagine if mr rogers was really really high [Laughter] oh boy if you were about to insult mr rogers i was going to be upset but that's even better too i could never do such a thing but to say i would be like how dare you noah but i know you you wouldn't insult mr rogers mr rogers i would the man won ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny he could take me out oh [ __ ] sorry anyway so that has nothing to do with

11:35 the dub of what we're going to talk about oh no it doesn't but here we are just died yes so as if you've never heard the show before it was a dumped by fundamental before fundamentation it got absorbed into crunchyroll but bought that later yeah but we'll go over it's all as we always do with our adr director scriptwriter now here's the interesting thing there's eight there's one director two script writers but they're also been songs adapted to this show so i wanted to talk about the music staff as well so for adr director we have one chris

12:21 george who you see also director listeners pop team epic one direct priority and that's the type of this recording he's currently directed the dub for spy family yes yep yeah i gotta say jamal when you told us that you wanted us to cover a dub that was on crunchyroll and it was directed by chris george and it happened to feature cute kids in it i i thought you were talking about that show not this one oh no spy family just started good yeah we got a long way to go before we get there so long way oh oh pit fit pit fights that one is going to be a fight holy hell ready steel cage all i know is if andrew is that whole thing

13:07 i'm just as good as oh andrew's gonna kill a [ __ ] he better be hosting anyway he's gonna he's gonna get uh the thorn on his side [Music] oh my anyway anyway as for two script writers uh for episode 1 we have aired this buke who's also ready for the show such as fire force our inaudible staff uh we have two directors one of them also did the adaptation for

13:54 the songs those two being uh don bennett and emmy low don brenda is also adapted for other shows such as actors songs connection kimono friends inside my emilo this is the first time adapted songs but they've also they've been getting to the direct game lately with a gecky doll which is the first project actually at tactop destiny which their assistant directed and don is also doing the lyric work now before we get into discussion about this because i did not realize this until what two days ago apparently it was chris george's birthday oh yeah

14:40 by the time this episode comes out considering the day we're recording an unhappy belated birthday chris it's here's the gift i mentioned for you so happy birthday to you happy birthday anyway anyway i think just for the purposes of this episode we could do rad robert for adr that group 40 characters sound good that's fine yeah since this is a children's show and this music evolved i think we should probably flip a cord between doors or uh sure let me let me just do that with

15:26 the coin i got one right here okay i'm gonna flip it right now uh i'm on heads or tails tails all right let's take a look you hear it here first an actual live coin flip boys and girls it is heads i'm sorry i i know you can't see it but yep it's totally heads tell me right here with this real coin that i have in my hand it's totally not oh so we gotta trust him all right not a poker chip i mean i'm on piggyback off of this but um i was impressed that they managed to um uh dub the songs for a show very recently uh for shows uh that have songs like um uh what's a good one zombieland saga uh doing it while it's being uh like episodes are being released online

16:12 never seemed to really be uh either a priority or an ability uh usually they uh wait for the home video release on that so i was pleasantly surprised that hey all these songs except for one of the insert songs in the episode where they're eating crabs and the opening and ending songs are all dubbed into english it's uh it's good the singing they got for it was perfectly fine the lyrics for it uh were not straining at all yeah they definitely seem to be going for a well we can't do nursery rhymes exactly so we're gonna do very basic very simple words and lyrics and uh i guess i don't have a qualm with that i i'm sure i'm sure it held the attentions of the four-year-olds that they were courting for this

16:59 needed more imagine actual children watching this show yeah yes of course i i'm sure i am absolutely sure that this show was uh their primary target audience was children was you know preschool children they're showing this in preschools all over the country right now [Laughter] the future is messed up can you imagine a school trying to get away with it by my showing kids life lessons with their michi we've heard us they'd probably just be bored the kids would be confused as [ __ ] the parents the teachers would relate so hard though yep they'd break out the dvd card just pop that bad boy in oh yeah so sit back

17:47 relax till the lights off why did you just read look at that yourself it's a secret ploy to break the teachers oh man hey mrs johnson so uh we want you to show the children this upbeat children's program look at the colors and the happy children in it and five minutes later oh my god what have i done with my life teachers are amazing by the way don't give them [ __ ] you are correct they work very hard my daughter's preschool teachers uh are exceptionally uh very good at what they do teachers are that's nothing to do with the dubbing portion i'm just putting it out there because i know there's like mental health situations and crisis going on with teachers so teachers are amazing cut them some slack just saying that that's true

18:32 clearly we joke because we love yes we do okay they're nice uh online you have anything else you want to see this is a fun show i think the thing the thing i like is that all the segments during let's say have been really easy to have the segments when they're shooting maman's sound really fake like really like really laying into it and make everything sound really really insincere and i appreciate that i feel like a very concentrated effort that like when they're shooting of like now we're that we're gonna present this and the anime does this as well but like we're gonna present this as like something that will end up on air

19:18 eventually uh which i appreciate i i feel like they could have just fell into the trap of having a lot of i'll get to this more when we talk about the actual actors of kind of like phoning it in on purpose and i appreciate that they decided to go the more complicated route of how do we present this as both sincere and also really cynical at the same time um also the songs are really funny i i i assumed for a lot of these uh one of the main hurdles towards uh dubbing songs during simulcast aside from just like getting their hands on the masters is that adapting song lyrics is hard because you have to translate it and also then write lyrics that fit the meter and rhythm and so on which

20:04 if you've ever tried to like just sort of hand translate something for fun that's that's a lot harder than it seems like it is yeah um but out of these these sound like actual musically they sound like actual children's music i don't know if any children's artist would actually write a song about why doesn't the bread taste as good at home as it did when it was a free sample that that feels that feels like a very very that feels like a very specific adult problem i i don't know i'm on you go back and listen to some of those old rappy tapes and uh the lyrics are probably a little little more complex than we noticed afterwards oh my god why did i get a costco membership i just pay more for food i don't eat that could be a song right [ __ ] there for you

20:51 dude that'd be a that'd be amazing stealth album like format it as a children's album but then all the lyrics are about really innocuous stuff that only adults [Music] that would that would not be bad not bad at all it does help to uh with the matching the meter and everything that uh they're they're very simple uh words they're not battle rapping basically thank god no this no the the i mean the fact that they're kids tunes to begin with also i'm sure that i'm sure that makes it a lot easier to do this thing compared to some of the more uh stuff like zombieland saga where they are clearly more meant to be like professional songs that would play on the radio type stuff now my question is um the one song that

21:39 was translated that's not a kid song is the one that um utana sings the the one that was supposed to be like her oh her big break yeah that her weepy inca ballad exactly yeah that one uh did that did the translation on that come across to you as uh like um i suppose fitting with the tone that the original was going for uh it i mean it's it's not uh what the [ __ ] it called sondheim no no no the the the one the one from yakuza that's been turned into a meme oh uh bakamite it's not baking the tape it's pretty good

22:25 uh i i mean i think it did like it it i think that also hit the tone it was going for it probably helped that i don't think they need to do the whole song i think you only hear like oh yeah verse maybe yeah yeah in that scene yeah just for a minute yeah cuz i guess i'll go next on this because one of the things i realized with the socks uh the insert sucks at eight eleven twelve for that dub for whatever reason but i'm not gonna focus leading too hard on that i ever needed all the socks that were dubbed however i thought they were pretty amazing for like the type of show it's going for because you know with a lot of children's songs with a lot of songs in general there's kind of a tempo you kind of have to match especially when you're dumping anime like

23:10 obviously not getting hit every time but i thought for the songs that they did w it was very great given who they got for the singers was even even more impressive because i know well one of them actually does covers we'll get to him later but the other kind of surprised me um yeah for sure yeah although that uh suburb video wait that with the video they filmed in the suburb i don't know why that was left in japanese even though they tried to attempt to you know what i'm wondering if maybe it could be down to time constraints with the simultaneous i'm assuming i'm assuming it's either time constraints

23:57 or i'd be curious to see which of these got like cd releases cause like yo the op is supposed to be an in-universe song and i'm assuming that didn't do it because that got like that almost certainly got a single release as the op that probably is either more expensive or there are more people do you have to wrangle with and it's just like you know what we don't it's it's a tv show we don't need to be that guy it doesn't need to be this guy that's true i'd be curious to know um what might have happened i mean especially because the um the home video release is coming out in the next couple months i believe right probably the next month by the time this episode goes up probably

24:42 yeah i'd be curious to know like if they go back if if they go about end up going back and dubbing the rest of the insert songs because if it was like a time straight the first time or maybe it was a licensing issue really what it would come down to i guess we'll figure boy that curse me my part-time job not giving me enough money lilac did you spend all your money on pachinko no i'm unlike uh what's this [ __ ] name unlike usahata i am a responsible adult and pay for my rent unlike with zahada who's a dumbass and i

25:27 love him no i what's very interesting is a lot of the um a lot of the discussion with these songs has already kind of been said i i will add one one interesting piece to it and it also kind of leads into some of the script writing as well some of the songs are so [ __ ] cringe and corny in the most loving way possible and that is the exact [ __ ] point oh yeah it's great because um what was it so andrew and i back in september when we went to connecticon aaron disney was actually a guest and so we actually talked to him and by that point it was there was at

26:13 least a couple episodes of uramichi out for the dub and so we let him we talked to him we were like yeah we've been watching uramichi we've been enjoying the the dubs so much and he's like oh that's awesome did you notice some of the like what did you think he asked like our honest opinion about like what did you think about like some of the use of um like the actual like japanese language like konichiwa or like daijoubu daijoubu yup yeah that gets used a lot oh yeah and i'm just like it's great especially because it's like a kid's show and he's like yep and it's very cringy which it makes it sound very even more cringy and i'm like oh yeah i i will say what what that was one reason i think you and i gave this show adobe for best friend

27:00 because nobody with with any kind of show if you keep some of the honorifics in the show like that it could kind of come off as little award to the like you don't exactly understand what's going on with the show this is what they do exactly what they were doing what they're doing with it yeah it's just like merits keeping the japanese side of things because this is such a japanese-centric programming they even yeah that there's no way about that it's an nhk show oh no i'm sorry it's an mhk yes yes yes yeah i i actually i never got around to doing this but i meant to at some point look at the japanese side and see if part of this is that they were riffing

27:45 on um i know it is it's often popular to kind of use semi-random english uh in in certain kind of japanese contexts because it's kind of perceived as cool i'm curious if you switch over to japanese trick are they you know are they saying like ohio or something or are they using like awkwardly inserted english decisions i mean there's that one segment in the last episode that um co-director aman not our oman the other one decided to uh write with um what was it niihau knee how girl [ __ ] namaste oh man namaste that was pretty cringy oh yeah

28:31 and then you have [ __ ] aramichi as bonjour man it's just sitting there in a chair baguette in hand with the most depressed look on his face like [ __ ] this show so i i'd be curious because i feel like in the japanese that would definitely open up for potentially using other languages of course um i mean i have to assume that since they're dressed as nationalities of other countries that the greetings themselves were supposed to be actually greetings oh probably i was looking for the i was looking for the cowboy and it's like where's the how i'm i'm mr howdy mr howdy

29:20 yeah something like that however the japanese view america yeah i'm not sure at this point after the oh lord knows but no oh you know yankee yankee doodles that's a callback right there i saw that episode the other week too uh thank you so much but no like my favorite kind of comedy and i'm so excited to talk about this show of particular because i don't think we've had many if at all any opportunities to talk about more dark comedies like this the last one we probably did was uh about a year ago actually is when um and andrew covered

30:06 uh uh kakishigoto oh yeah that was wrong it's not as dark as this though ah maybe not but the uh the sense of humor is the sense of humor is similar not not hurt by the fact that it that show was written by the guy who wrote cyanurez that's what sensei because i saw a lot of people compare this show to cyanuras that's supposed to happen is like even darker humor than [ __ ] kaguchiko um that's true and no one's trying to get taller in this show thankfully but it's still very bleak oh yeah definitely so at least for me then as far as i know yeah we don't talk about dark comedies that often here on the podcast and it makes me sad because dark comedy that's

30:54 the kind of that's my brand of humor this i like really weird [ __ ] up [ __ ] apparently i'm oh man you heard it here folks a watamote episode is right around the corner [ __ ] that welcome to the nhk episode should be right around the corner are you kidding me i've got blu-ray for one of those but i have i don't know save edition for one of them this is very very off topic but you know um what the guy who wrote the original novel welcome to the nhk you know what he did with the proceeds from the book from that book right no actually tell us he he he basically used it to self-fund his continued existence as a hikikomori

31:39 that sounds very on brand and i love it that's that's sort of beautiful in a terrible way isn't it we enabled his continuum we are we are all out when he is when he is eventually found dead in his apartment we are all we will all be responsible whoops but no like you did that dirk comedy has always been something that i take to dark comedy and dry humor um so if going into this show when i watched it the first time with andrew and toe i was like what the [ __ ] is even happening and why do i love it so much because you wouldn't expect a kid's like a show about a kids tv show to be

32:25 this like have this much depression and self-deprecating humor involved and it's it's brilliantly done the script and the music adaptations are both brilliantly done and they handle this very very well and kudos to uh chris george on a directing front because lord almighty this show is a lot and you have to be really on point with the comedic timing for this yeah it's not the irony is that uh they could have easily turned this into more of a gag uh dub where the characters um like punch up the the existential dread and the the snarkiness to one another but because uh chris uh makes everyone kind of maintain a

33:11 somewhat sensible level of decency nobody uh really does punch it up so much that it feels completely different from the tone of the original japanese yeah they punch uh if you want to say they punch up anything they just punch up a tiny bit with the recorded sessions with the filming sessions with the kids because that's their job but when the when the um the philosophical or the dark humor comes in it all just especially for erner mishi that facade just breaks instantly and it just makes the humor hit that much harder when that happens instead of the instead of him like noah was saying punching it up for even more effect and it's it just works so well

33:57 and i love oh my god i love the casting on this so much i love who plays rumiji just saying because i didn't think this was going to happen but surprised in this cast just saying i would say i'm not always with the dark cube but it works it works oh it hits so well chris george hey chris george chris george jeff do you know what he was doing with the castle because other than maybe a couple people a lot a lot of this is kind of a boat to be honest because that that was the surprise the part with the main cast because

34:44 again like steph will say you wouldn't expect who they got to play uh yeah i would expect when they got to play utado either but yeah but yeah like chris george is a madman the guy did direct the dub for pop team epic so this is just a walk in the park for him the last thing i'd like to note is that um i do appreciate that in jared's writing that they do uh it feels like they slip in a couple of vernacular phrases here and there like uh i think at one point uh somebody mentions like i just spilled a drink all over your crotch which you know it's like a very uh it feels like a more vinaigrette i do remember i do remember uh thing at

35:29 one point swamp ass yep yep there's that yeah yeah they're just kind of peppered throughout it oh there's a i sorry there's another it does it stands in contrast to the um like on set dialogue definitely there's another line that i love so much um it was in episode 8 where the station manager's daughter and her son visit and she has a thing for [ __ ] ikitaru apparently as a joke and then the voice of god who was played by kent williams in the show as an fyi says the following um stating that apparently the station manager's daughter has said i can work for my snack in the very ken williams normal like

36:15 serious narrator type tone it's just great got that episode that's the instances and really throughout the entire day of the show is i really wish that crunchyroll would have the option to have uh the subtitles running with the dub because i i'm like i gotta know what the original line was and i don't wanna have to you know restart the episode on the subtraction to figure it out if anything there's a twitter account that could do that for you i think dub clips sister name something like that i'll i'll i'll link you to that later on but they could probably do that for you so but jamal i'm asking for instant gratification i just want to know now talk to me now you'll get gratification but it's going

37:01 to take some time because of taking some time but y'all ready to move on yeah i think so all right so pretty much everybody here is from here right now is gonna be related to groups of five because there's a lot to cover with the show and if you see the uh what the hell was it the words within episode so we're gonna do something similar to that except less of a visual assault on the ice viewer because there's yeah the cast is a little bit smaller a little bit smaller everybody kind of bounces off each other one way or the other so uh wait wait wait wait wait hold on a second jamal i'm sorry but it was my understanding that we were going

37:47 to talk about each of the child actors oh my god full list here okay put your ass down right here that i wrote all these notes down okay two things what okay two things what we ain't got time to pack all of that two dead papers at two daddy chambers had the sickest bird in episode two to uh oh which one what was it i forgot what the one where she tells me that he needs to get some friends yes that was pretty good it's hard to narrow it down it's like every other line the kids are throwing out why did why haven't you gotten married yeah i will i will say one thing about the show with this dark humor

38:32 though if any kids had started crying over uh dialogue that would be a deal breaker for me because that oh yeah and what i mean yeah it comes off as creepy but at least it didn't come off too much escape because these somebody's kids are smarter than that oh no yeah and it's interesting because urban she has a character like as much of a depressed self-deprecating human being as he is he genuinely cares about these kids that is one thing that is that is like consistent he does care about the kids what i i don't know if care about the kids is the right phrase so much as doesn't want to uh ruin their lives

39:19 essentially like i feel like there's a bit of a difference there well like that that's caring the kids make him feel all warm and fuzzy inside so he cares about them there are moments where he's genuinely happy that the kids are so nice to him am i wrong we're talking about the children i didn't have a question i wanted to ask what's up while they're shooting the kids scenes you'll occasionally see some of the small girls have this hairstyle that appears to be a ponytail that comes out of the side of your head how the [ __ ] does that work every time i saw that it distracted me

40:04 because it's like what does that look like when your hair's not up is it what how does your heart work is it like super long on the one side like how does that work yeah that was like that's like that was my question what is that is that a real is that a real haircut children as the only female presenting person in this episode this evening even i don't [ __ ] know how that works well as the only person with a daughter in this chat i'll tell you exactly how uh the dad did her hair that day i'll take it yeah there's no other explanation there you go okay so let's move on to uh more stuff actually behind the scenes cool we have uh it's

40:52 interesting we have a couple of people who work in merchandise and marketed and then we have some of the tv staff we have a kikaku who works at merchandising he's very miserable working his job oh i feel you but he's worse in charge of deciding new products new toys to keep the show going because you know no tv show doesn't just what i exposure you know it's merchandise for this kind of thing of course ask any power of intro they will too ask any tv show any kids tv show these days they are running entirely on buy our branded products hello hasbro

41:39 he's basically what somebody described as a goth be a boy so uh it was something that you kind of said either andrew alba i can't remember who but anyway he kind of has it kind of has it he's a new hire he kind of has it with what the other new hires uh whoever doesn't talk much kind of prefers 2d life it's a different scientist it's great as evidenced by uh kikaku breaking his glasses i kind of i got the thing it's kind of when you have these two together because the one thing about kikaku i learned

42:26 this just today his name's harvey kaku and apparently in japanese that kind of translates to something along the lines of sales and sales and merchandise that kind of thing oh so i thought i was almost literal with that okay oh yeah oh my god a name pun in an anime i'm shocked yeah but that was done thanks did not go according to keikaku so i thought oh my god when i was re-watching and i'm like is is it is did they purposely name keikaku after keikaku and then you said that i'm like okay that makes more sense yeah well what also kind of doesn't make

43:12 sense is that we have a director here by the name of our bod log here scruffy beard that was a good dusty old saga too wait my god uh no but he actually he actually does have long hair scruffy but he's the direct he's one of the two directors of this show somehow we don't get introduced to him to like what halfway through the show because because kubernetes just pointed out it was uh he's like dude he's been here the whole time ass like yeah he's desperate this guy primarily is the one who um helps write some of the segments desperate stuff ideas a kind of picture step to the other

43:58 director director they're oh my god director director oh my god speaking of lazy names oh my god ugh this guy i'm seeing this this guy oh my god that is almost as good as one episode of arthur where they had the director be named literally doctor hector [ __ ] oh [ __ ] that's that's that's at least cute this guy did akita it feels like an act of contempt on the part of the author probably oh he don't get a real name do you mean to tell me do you mean to tell me his name is actually director

44:44 that's exactly what we were saying he had no choice but to be a director when he grew up how the [ __ ] did i not notice that [Laughter] because you never pronounced it out loud before right now direct kira he's a wrecker is what he is uh oh god this guy yeah kind of unable to read the situation or actually he doesn't really fully care about the situation ahead like okay to put this clearly to viewers have you ever had a boss who like you think he might have your best interests at heart but he really doesn't or he doesn't really care entirely oh yeah that's directly to that show oh yeah accurate have you ever had the boss where they

45:30 were really good to you for maybe the first couple of months but by the time you've worked into the groove of the job and they think that you can handle yourself they suddenly stop seeming to care about your well-being i i think you are both giving this guy way too much credit this guy never cared about anybody's well-being yeah basically because as evidenced in the music video episodes uh oh i forgot about that that we need to shoot this six months in advance we need to shoot this winter video six months in advance in the sweltering heat of summer this video

46:18 well green screen that oh why did you green screen the whole thing way you turned me down video regarding right left mess corrupt and we have and we can't use any of it but that segment is tomorrow and we need you to vigorously swing his neck left and right sits there having slept wrong the night before and is in terrible neck pain he's like [ __ ] this is why unions are a thing people anyway yeah basically it's like why i tell my boss to ace accepted what the deal what diy take it off the menu just yet now we'll substitute that with this it will trust me anyway anyway you know you know who i do trust

47:05 i do trust this final character you're going to mention ah yes ah yes the choreographer uh fruits get capoliti which i learned the hard way do that google captain lady on twitter search god unless you follow somebody okay i'm about to do that right now oh no we just type in the words okay and let's see what comes up um noah's taking one for the team right now oh he's taking whatever [Laughter] do i want to know no okay

47:52 you good buddy you guys give me a minute here i'm gonna go uh lie down [Laughter] see people when we try to ward you while we try to warn you about something well we try to warn you about something please take it to heart those aren't you about stairs bro noah did it for the bit no one noah sacrificed himself for the bit i appreciate it if you tell me not to touch the hot iron i'm just gonna i won't be able to stop thinking what am i missing out on anyway get back on track yes we also our last character of this group is our choreographer vince k kappalidi

48:38 or he kind of looks like to be a gay boba bro i got to put him in here because i see it and i don't mind that i kind of burped here because they show up in a few episodes but really it was the uh when the cast gets ready for the together with my mod concert which that guy has kind of one of my favorite scenes he just it's just kaepernick popping up the woodland characters he pom strikes us and then after that catalina has a thing for usahata yes but play these five uh kikaku's played

49:25 by yog bosch webber is played by steven food i'll buy this plate by j michael tatum [Laughter] you didn't you didn't know j michael tam voices you ah my voice isn't nearly sonorous enough you are as tall as him though surprise that is true yes director is voiced by eric phil ed kaepernick is voiced by david wald uh but of course you can't talk about w children's show without his biggest waterfall at the park in the power rangers

50:11 franchise oh yeah steven food you've also heard this kimchi cockaroo better breakfast for spirits and hachikida and robihachi check my potato this uad the introduction before the miss owen smith attack on titan and sebastian mckenzie black butler eggville you've heard the best desert park in desert park and toba shigaraki might hear academia david wald let's see what you need the introduction you've heard the best adam and skate definitely and solid flip flappers oh morty so you want to start this group discussion what character is the tied or free for i'd i think free-for-all might be fine

50:57 honestly yeah unless you all think otherwise [Music] okay what's what's that i've never heard johnny young bosh have a meltdown but he should do it more often because it's really funny he is so angry he curses out everybody like oh my god i just just a man who is absolutely furious at the world at all times there is there is no joy in kikachu land like everyone [ __ ] up it's always

51:43 what is this [ __ ] introduction for kekaku it's we've we learned in like the first like two three minutes of him appearing that he's in a band that has [ __ ] failed his girlfriend apparently left him because she apparently like wanted to get married and have kids and he wouldn't do it or some [ __ ] no what happened was he said that she didn't want to get married to have kids and he was chasing the dream that was bogging him down and after she left she kind of found my face she kind of found on facebook and found out it was kind of a lie but oh yeah that's right she she didn't want to settle them and have kids with that's what it was that's she

52:29 she did not want to make prime minister shinzo abe proud [Music] but only but oh only only oh my god no this other dude she'll make him proud all night oh boy no like oh my god we like you've heard johnny have like meltdowns or get angry before but you haven't heard him have like an actual [ __ ] meltdown to this extent and i can't i can't figure out which one was the better one was it the one where he loses a [ __ ] about pre-orders or was it at the christmas party when he has

53:14 the angry phone call about how he doesn't even want to be there yes yes i'll be honest i think my favorite is when he's actively arguing with uh uebu just because it's funny to hear him take his rage out on somebody who just really is not being remotely bothered by him yeah because because one of the running gags that we have with these two is that uebu who again is in charge of like marketing and [ __ ] he's the one who posts the listings if i like merchandise on the website but it's merchandise that doesn't [ __ ] exist so okay kaku gets pissed off at a waifu about it like this doesn't even exist yet why are you putting it online it's like look it's already selling it's like goddammit [Music]

53:59 who would order this couple of people putting in pre-orders god damn it yeah it's just crazy parents will buy anything that's got their kit their kids favorite characters on it yeah i mean anything including a glove kaku is such a nice flip side to uramichi where urumichi's frustration tends to manifest as kind of despair and quiet emotions and kikaku who clearly hates his job even more than urumichi might his uh it just he just rages at everything around him basically so yeah uevu doesn't appear as much and then oh my god every time kekaku

54:47 when he's not having a [ __ ] meltdown he's just like the brightest cheeriest like sweetest guy and he's like for her michi he's like trying to get to know him because it's like oh my god maybe i could be friends with him we're kind of similar and then the second he has a [ __ ] it's the whole gag with um uramichi has the door to his heart and it slowly opens when he thinks he can kind of let keikaku in and then the second k-cock who starts going into a fit of rage and anger the doors slam and they lock shut it's like nope it's [ __ ] great oh my god so i haven't really been keeping up with some of the actors that were talking

55:32 about um is johnny and bosh been doing a whole lot of anime voice over recently i mean yeah who do bits here in there yeah he doesn't pop up and like i haven't really seen him pop up in like really major roles if that's your question yeah yeah yeah i think i think that's the difference he doesn't like but you know back in the heyday of like the 2000s he was leads in a lot of things i think usually he plays a lot of like site characters okay it's not just me missing some big new role that he's been no no not really it's mostly because he's refreshing playing more honestly i mean it's refreshing to hear him again because i mean it's always a thrill to hear him because he's just you know a really naturally good voice to listen to right and in those intense

56:18 lose your [ __ ] moments it's a lot of fun to listen to because i can hear like the unbridled unrestrained voice of a million uh lead characters from decades past [ __ ] you can hear ichigo kurosaki a little bit of a stampede in there maybe a little rent in thurston i hear at the park just lose this mind oh yeah take the audio from this and put it over footage of of like later season power rangers oh my gosh i gotta try this what's wrong with this world cut to a power ranger by the way side tag it because i saw the sabbat chat blue episode uh just so you know about kim strauss was the power rangers just throw that out

57:04 there well there you go surprise and for you noah patricia from lucky star wars with power of rangers the third diagram of power ranger actors to la voice actors is a circle it is indeed a circle i i legitimately thought that brian cranston being in power rangers was the most interesting comparison you were gonna make but nope patricia from lucky star but i really love like johnny just freaking the [ __ ] out and it's i kind of hope he gets to have more fun with the occasional really whacked out roles like this and of course [ __ ] chomp chomp bacon and [ __ ] pop tea i call [ __ ] i still call [ __ ] on

57:51 that too but that was a thing because chris george is again a goddamn madman what two things what chris george was half of my speed dial for stuff like this oh my bad it's this pop team epic and black clover yeah that's right that comes up later and two i thought i'd do his range but when hardy told me he was chop chop bacon i immediately called [ __ ] chomp chomper i didn't realize it either and then i already said it i'm like you're [ __ ] kidding me on the flip side of things uh stupid food's fine and all um it's just very uh unassuming and in a very intentional way no yeah

58:38 yeah no he he he's he's the right level of like like flat but like correct flat yeah and he's not wait sorry it's not monotone um no one here is monotone but it's definitely the i am so checked out voice it's kind of i want to go i want to go home and oogle my 2d well it kind of has like um not really i don't want to say subtle it's kind of like a dry like a little bit of a dry sense of humor to him in the voice which makes a lot of sense for a weibo okay my favorite thing that steven got to have fun with is the new is the end of the year wrap party where um he's talking to the ladies and and also capellini yeah about like him

59:27 having an interest he's like i don't have an interest in 3d women i only prefer my waifus and my body no like my colleague in the merchandising department threat broke my glasses and threatened to take all of my body pillows and mail them back in like back home to my parents one by one and then and then all the ladies are like oh no we're not gonna touch that that's a legitimate threat it could be like i i will threaten to shred your body pillows that's one thing i will threaten to mail them to your parents that's scary but no yeah i think out of the five really he has uebu doesn't have the really much he

1:00:12 just pops up a few times mostly in the one episode where one is introduced with keikaku and two is also happens to be the episode where's the end of the year party yeah but uh no he's a lot of fun oh look there are look we're getting pre-orders right now what the [ __ ] i i think i would have liked the maybe uh like the show a little bit more if um they kind of interwove these characters earlier in the show i don't know maybe he has percent it would have been a lot more fun but i think with considering keikaku's character though being as energetic as he is in his in the delivery it might i i feel like having his introduction a little bit later on in the show makes

1:00:57 more sense because you're not like wearing out the viewer so fast um not to spoil anything but i got kind of worn out on parts of the show very early on so i could i would have enjoyed uh that energy a little bit earlier okay i guess each their own i i i suspect we're seeing a function of i have not read the manga but i'm assuming this is probably like relatively straight adaptations of at least segments of it so i'm assuming it's kind of like you know characters get introduced at about the same rate they did in the moment feels like it probably that would make sense by the way it kind of surprised me to learn that this was originally a jose manga i would not have pegged this kind of style for that um most of those like shown in joe say whatever categories are kind of nonsense

1:01:45 that's yeah that's a good point that's really just tells you this is who we expect to buy this is who buy the magazine that this runs in more than anything else which is why the term shown and kind of gets abused a lot if you know what the little meaning of it is yeah just it's a boy's manga oh so what is what genre is it it's broadly broadly aimed at ten-year-old boys very broadly which is which is why would people hear shojo they think of like romance and stuff no i mean they expect it to be for young girls like it doesn't have to be a romance monkey that kind of thing just waste what it means absolutely yeah look one thing it's kind of bothering me for a little while but you know yeah robocop could have totally been in a shoujo manga

1:02:31 oh good [Music] i mean let us let us note jinji edo got his start in halloween a a magazine aimed at women that is a joke that is a shojo magazine technically lordy lord yeah yeah goddamn anyways market but yeah so um by the way i'm on i thought you were amazing in this show oh thank you yeah i know you haven't neither did i but please cut your bags though surprise

1:03:18 this is gonna be like please cut your bags you fall asleep and the the suit takes over your body and you wake up you know well that would explain why i don't remember recording anything so maybe so in all in all honestly i don't have too much to say on j michael tatum's uh um amman director um it just kind of is there i think it's less standout-ish and less in your face than uh the other two that we'll talk about in a second yeah it was nice to have um at least um the wide range of the kind of people who fall into the entertainment industry you've got people like uh kikaku and uebu who are obviously not really there by passion or they're for a paycheck uh and then you get the other two

1:04:04 characters who we'll talk about who feel very very passionate about their work oh yeah about feels like right in between the two like he's got a passion for the job but it's not uh like he's not having as much fun with it as the other two yeah wow [Music] the thing with the thing with ammon as a character is and he said this he says a few times he wants to leave his mark on the world but he already has i know but he oh wait wait you said all mine as a kid i mean we're going to leave your mark on the world of entertainment that's all well and good but you clearly don't know what kind of program you're making here yeah neither does he clearly because he

1:04:50 runs out of ideas really [ __ ] quick and apparently he he has to take to at least in the last episode following her michi around to get some form of inspiration hence the earlier mention of bonjour man oh because apparently getting a big life-size baguette pillow thing means oh i have an idea bonjour man there is a there's a genre for the kind of programming that i feel like they're putting on it's it's marketed as like you know fun and kind of wacky for kids but honestly it feels much closer to like nightmare fuel public access shows that

1:05:38 uh like you know flood creepypastas on the internet they weren't trying to be creepy but but they are the ones that what they're not supposed to be upsetting they're just kind of too janky and poorly made to not be upsetting yeah exactly the visuals are sickly the audio is not very good and they don't have the budget to pull off the ambition they're going for so you've just got very very nightmare inducing imagery that uh people will not forget but they won't know where they saw it from 20 years later it's not as a did i dream of did i have a night a fever dream about two people in like really cheap looking masks having conversations upside down or was that actually a thing whoops

1:06:25 can i also just say per miche he gets the short end of the stick with the costumes on a constant basis it's because he has he has the distinct disadvantage of being the only person on the cast who's fit yeah because he's he's a gymnast on assad and then we're gonna go back to bonjour man again he has a [ __ ] tank top that shows his rippling [ __ ] packs and [ __ ] and his biceps no and he the shirt has macarons printed all over he's wearing a crown of [ __ ] macarons and he has a baguette in his arm it's a common fact that all children's television hosts were absolutely ripped

1:07:11 i mean you don't know mr rogers could have been ripped under that sweater you don't know i know most of them were miserable because i remember there was a show on bbc years ago called 101 and uh one of the tv processors talked about how he got his start doing the children's show and they showed the clip where he had to shut up uh mccackle bird that was right next to him and he looked annoyed and i kept trying to find that clip because i know that was relevant to this because that's how amici kind of feels you know like especially kind of procrastinating especially why she has to take out all the uh most of the time oh yeah poor sahara the poor sap but no oh my god tatum is a delight

1:07:58 okay so that haven't been said what about uh okay this guy director i'm going to say what i say with with love okay eric vale eric vale is really good at playing characters you want to punch he's very i've never met him he seems like a very nice guy he is a very talented actor but the characters you kind of want to strangle are like a wheelhouse he he is very good in uh and he now see me and uh-huh go ahead i said and narakita is eric vale at his most punt him into the sun it's a fantastic performance you're you're right you are 100 right uh

1:08:45 me and stephanie have actually met eric vale before i met him a few times he's i've met him a few times he's really nice yeah he is very nice but he's very uh like um he's very snarky i'm snarky yeah he prefaced one of his panels by saying so uh i forgot what i labeled this panel but it turns out uh one of the best ways to recruit your badge costs is to host a panel on a sunday so we're just gonna open this up to q a for the next day yeah oh yeah i think i remember that that's good that's great and he has he has like fun phenomenal stories it's like amazing and he he he's also honest he's also very honest when we went to connecticon cause he was again he was

1:09:32 one of the guests for connecticon um last year and andrew and i went to a panel that consisted of my hero villains so it had eric it had leah clark derek snow jeremy inman and um i feel like there was at least one more no i think it was the four of them because it was the three of them there and then eric on the other side he buy his lonesome because that's how he rolls sometimes and um the conversation magically came up about peace girl right oh god and eric's like oh my god i hate that [ __ ] i remember that he just like out know he's oh my god that show

1:10:17 it's such a drama he wasn't a fan of it and he worked on some of it uh for staffing he's a he's a he's a funny human being that's for sure but dear sweet lord you want to know what directive kind of reminded me of well i think i think i have notes here how eric voices him kind of reminds me of those old hollywood directors that are kind of just like you're going to be a star kid way to go yeah they got they got a big cigar they're always lying on kind of like the trope but in this case it's a little bit more uh a little bit more oblivious to the very

1:11:03 oblivious to the [ __ ] they do because dear sweet lord rekita doesn't know the [ __ ] he does no he doesn't as is pointed out in the last episode they are not making anything in this studio that hollywood would make yeah to the yeah to the point where if going back to the [ __ ] um winter music video in the goddamn summer kumudi ain't having [ __ ] anymore it's a good thing you bought that i feel at that point he but uh kubatari might permit his place hence why he said that in the last episode that he ain't making [ __ ] like hollywood does because he probably comes to realize just a little bit because

1:11:49 yeah the narrator did say that he that his debate became slightly less absurd yes because kumatani gave him a piece of his own medicine essentially he's he stuffed direkida in the [ __ ] bear costume just so he feels how [ __ ] hot it is and what he's putting everybody through because kumatani don't take [ __ ] from no one we love him for it what kind of stood out to me about uh derekida's uh performance is that um well i should probably ask first did either any one of you guys watch the sub version of this at all nope i didn't get the chance okay because i was wondering about um

1:12:35 how closely the the japanese sounded uh to dare to tell because eric makes him sound younger than he looks like i look at that character design and i'm like thinking he should probably have like a bit of an older uh maybe not craglier but just you know slightly older sounding voice and eric's uh portrayal of him just makes him sound like he's almost the same age as the cast who's in front of the camera that's not a criticism exactly that's just uh it's a feature that i i don't know if eric can do old man sounding voice i've never heard him do something odd because i felt the voice was appropriate i think it's more i thought it was appropriate kind of more because of the um the character's stature like

1:13:22 height wise he's not the tallest guy in the room and he's also when you look at the character he kind of has a little bit of a pretentious look to him when you think about it a little you see where i'm going with this though like i feel like the voice matches like what the character looks like to me so that's very interesting that you had that we had like the opposite thoughts on it now now that you've mentioned this his haircut reminds me of emo phillips so now imagining emo phillips playing this character i don't know who emo phillips have you seen uhf no oh oh yes yes he's the guy he's the carpenter teacher who cuts his thumb off

1:14:10 oh that's how he talks that's how he talks all the time anyways i've been a hotness i haven't seen that but well one thing he always gets me is it's kind of like a direct kind of a direct deception if you will because when you directed somebody it because you directed somebody who has to direct somebody in the fake tv production you just had to pay it's like it's like how do you know when to drive the credit system because i called for all we know he could have just done his role in one take yeah or chris oh chris would be like no no no i need you to be crappier crappier i need to be an awful person who doesn't give a [ __ ] about his actors

1:14:57 so i have a question are you the kind of person who will stay late for a job or come in early oh god oh god [Music] this is a hypothetical right yeah yeah hypothetical this is a hypothetical oh no he's straight up no this is a you gotta pick one boy that's some serious work ptsd right then the only thing i can hope is that the care that the actors are getting paid uh hourly and not salary oh my god i mean that it would make sense um i mean look as long as they get paid a very good rate you know yeah yeah you would think

1:15:43 they should get paid by the hour especially if you're uh sleeping on the job or sleeping at the office you should get paid for those hours one would help [Music] but honestly i feel the standout performance in this whole group here is uh more so than anyone else but by a small margin is david wallace capellini yes yes yes now here's the thing that stood out to me is that um i okay we're never really told uh if capellini is trans or just crossdressing or we're not quite sure what that's why this board i'm just saying non-binary book because at one point they said i think in episode six or seven when they go to the hot springs that yard matter will be

1:16:30 yeah so we're not yeah so uh what the hell is something lies a subject something queen uh yes yes yes so when i saw so when i'm listening to the performance i'm expecting um maybe more of a flamboyant over-the-top and aging shakespearean kind of delivery uh but because the character's uh facial expression and demeanor is much more stoic uh david wald is much more professional sounding uh it stands in stark contrast to the first character that came to my mind was um there's a there's a drag queen character in uh or in high school host club who runs a like a bed and breakfast voiced by yeah yeah um voiced by sunny straight that is very

1:17:16 over the top and the enemy wait wait wait wait wait wait yeah oh you seriously you said okay yeah it's like ivanka no the other drag character yeah so uh so i'm gonna praise david because david absolutely got the uh the stoicism and the professionalness this is not a drag character who is uh you know startled by a stinkbug does not lose their cool they are as they put it in their own words practically perfect in every way we love copyright capillini is a strong independent woman who don't need no man or at the very least capellini is a strong independent woman who just wants usahata for some reason

1:18:02 because that is a running joke um no i i love oh my god every time every time david gets to be a fabulous character like this i'm just like a plus [Laughter] because cap lee don't take no [ __ ] cappellini is like all about being again that strong independent woman that they are uh and kathleen knows exactly what they want let's be real like it's i love it david whenever david gets to play such fun fabulous characters like

1:18:50 this he knocks out of the park like every [ __ ] time and i love you love it you get them girl god damn oh that was another one my favorite deliveries and i don't even remember the
