0:46 a trip back to the good old years of the 90s Jesse verse 90's thinking about the bowl uh because everybody we are here to talk about the dub for Dragon Quest the adventure of dying and the reason I say anybody about this because there was a whole very bizarre soccer that's got on for like a year or two essentially I I had forgotten all about it until I started watching this and was like oh right that was a thing wasn't it uh yeah because uh the recent people have existed at all uh was because there was a new work policy put on it by sagafter

1:33 for some reason yeah yeah and it was that like they wanted to uh bulb sub L.A Talent over for it and I guess they didn't go through back after for that so uh that ended up falling through and uh yeah the word policy but not bad whoops yeah foreign but no apparently it was still a thing and uh so better Canada here we are we had finally be able to talk about it so it though unfortunately not passed by leaving with and I would

2:18 like but I guess we'll get to that later so I I know this isn't our first Canadian dub but is this our second Canadian Dove I feel like we have not covered many of them yeah that's what yeah I know we did one for others when we covered for like separate the movies but uh this is my first time I get to talk about a Canadian dub so I'm excited virtual the Death Note episode I think this might be our third Canadian dub now unless there's something I'm missing no no this would be number three oh boy yeah that's what yeah made by our good friends in Canada yeah before before we get to that I'm saying probably get in the description um

3:04 okay so uh both a little bit for a minute and after the defeat of the dark lord Handler all the mod series were at least from his evil and moved to the Iowa divide to live in peace who grow up to be a hero he gets a b one when the headlines resurrected in the previous hero of odd perhaps a trade died to help in the battle I had a lower not taking that word for the even more powerful dark King very attempt to kill Avon to save his students of audience is a powerful self-sacrifice foul to attack but is unable to defeat hand Lars when it seems to die that the suit and pop are doomed that Mark appears and died his forehead he simply gets incredible power to fend off adlar the two students they go on a journey to a very divide and bring peace to the

3:50 world it's a very very 90 story and I've got it here for that it's very 90s have you played any Dragon Quest any of the Dragon Quest games I had a little I want to say it was a Game Boy Advance cartridge that was the first two Dragon Quest games on it and I definitely played a little bit of the first one up until I lost in a fight and then realized I had not saved at all in the last like 45 minutes uh uh and that kind of and the the the the I covered a fair amount of ground and the the concept of having to redo all that kind of set my energy and I put it down and I have I have bought the re-releases

4:37 of the first three that are on the switch and I fiddled around with the first one a little bit um which is interesting uh and also kind of hard to get into because it's like the first jrpg oh yeah that is yeah I I I want to return to that but I think I might try the um is it 11 that's the most yes it is very very good yeah I'm I'm gonna like pick up 11 at some point and play that first because I feel like that's probably gonna endure me to this series a little bit more than trying to but as much as I love digging into the past and mediums maybe maybe there's a time and a place for giving yourself the easy route yeah that's true yeah but uh yeah this series it is

5:22 actually kind of a bit off of the Dragon Quest franchise and we're just ready considering that Dragon Quest itself is just uh partly built out of toriyama's DNA because he kind of helped come up with the garden but yeah this video this is kind of like a weird bulb circle thing everything's connected yeah at any rate this dude man into getting them somehow and some kind of spread that happened and a even more surprised it that you know rather than our usual herbs of taxes or lots of ways it was dead in Canada uh are your friends at Ocean Studios and

8:29 to talk about the directors and they added the adapter for this time on voice searching we have Carl Williams and Jack Cox and uh and creditor adaptation is Daniel younger by Carl Williams uh he's in a lot of stuff in Canada uh basically everything and stuff like uh the F4 best friend card by Vanguard Death Note um Freddy to tonight's discussion and the ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z one that was like I think with the information first produced before they decided you know what we can do it in Texas and uh started

9:17 it all comes back Hulk dragon ball man it's always [ __ ] Dragon Ball uh yeah and uh assistant shoes as Beyblade burst so it's wild real trigger and the weird Canadian kid we got that quiz that is so somehow they eventually get done but we've got so far uh I can only find one that happened I can only find one script credit to his day but uh funny enough it's for the reason dub of Future Boy code that we got

10:03 huh did not realize I didn't know that was a Canadian dub hey I think like yeah no it was like G kids or libertar to my dad say had it and then it was like a baby catheter was like wait really yes no it's uh so there's two kids who picked it up I do remember that also uh so fun fun fact and slight Asterix because I'm getting this from a Wiki but according to this Source uh Blue Water Studios is in fact a a subsidiary of ocean they are like their budget Studio I thought I would check it out which I I it's like I don't it can't be a coincidence that they're called ocean and blue water that feels too too

10:48 intentional to be an accident anyways yeah honestly Brazil yeah it's been a little bit since I've heard a Canadian joint but uh yeah I really like how this went down it has a very appropriately 90s feel to it which is kind of going to be the theme Here or something oh this this definitely took me back to the days of watching your your kids WB and I don't remember if Fox kids had a had a block name during the years I was watching it but like stuff that would show up on there

11:35 I actually wanted to ask since I feel like you're a little more familiar with the show would you would you call this a kids anime uh I mean sort of I mean I don't think it's got a fight again I don't think it's particularly inappropriate yeah like there's nobody that's really inappropriate for kids like there is some there's an airline there it's a minor swearing because I don't know I guess I know it's weird because I don't know what it is baby wanted to see if they could get out of kids at work but again there is some swearing so I don't know maybe they thought maybe they could gamble at Adult Swim or something this year that would be two objectional the kids but again it is still like a cheddy jam thing so you know it doesn't

12:22 have any more violence in the United States or something so like is that explicitly for like little little kids but you could probably give it to like you know an eight year old or something yeah this this feels like a strong y7 I have no idea if they're still using that TV rating system but that's the one I always remember from when I was a kid this feels like a this feels like a y7 show not words and you know like Dragon Ball Z and it's payday in a good if not on you know your your kids WB it would have been a good choice for like Toonami back when it was a Saturday evening sort of thing back then

13:07 but uh yeah I really do like the very deities better day of the direction that the script is also a pretty fun in that respect they have like some pretty good one-liners case blade uh a little weird considering toe in committed up so you would figure it would be like pretty what the word but it didn't get get out to have a little a few Clips every now and then I think that gave it a little exercise it's very it's very fun sounding it sounds I don't know why I'm surprised on this I think it's because I I do not keep up with one piece but I'm very aware that toei have a iron fist on all their properties and equally very micromanaging um so I think I was I was pleasantly surprised to just hear how like oh this this is very like it passes the test of like whatever

13:53 would I have enjoyed this when I was 10 answers yes I would have enjoyed this if I was 10 but it's because the the anime is pretty solid and this is like a nice fun complimentary dub that's got energy it's exciting uh everybody sounds correct as we'll get into in a little bit uh some of the characters have Goofy cartoon voices which is something that doesn't show up in the kind of anime we usually cover anymore and it's just nice to hear that oh yeah yeah uh yeah that is definitely a stable than that I appreciate there's a very goofy country boys but uh yeah uh I really like everything's like maybe one black minor depict I would have it's like between like the two directors

14:38 and there are a couple of points where I could like maybe tell like which uh like which directors on one episode because uh Carl William says been around for like a very long time since like the 90s so that's about to see he's like very inexperienced with what he's doing that cop has also been doing stuff for a while but uh his stuff is a little more reasons I guess between the two uh Carl Williams are actually these kind of fake little more uh put together [Music] during like maybe some of the more dramatic movements but for the most part I think yeah but for the most part I don't have like too many problems but I was directed and I do think everyone sounds pretty good

15:25 I'd agree oh uh and so uh to get to the characters easy we're basically freaking decided to two sections the bad guys are the good guys yeah absolutely bad guys we have uh the leaders of the Dark Army there we have so we have dark King Vern uh Adler crocodile Deborah Gelco blazard Miss Vern and baron abso dark egg bird as obviously advertised is the dark egg he's the ruler of the underworld and the heroic

16:10 leader of the Dark Army we do get to see what he looks like for a while but he just has like very just very clear shadowy Overlord energy just you know very doctor qualified which I appreciate he's gonna get you next time Gadget or or die yeah and then we have had wire the former dog Lord who once tried to conquer the world and now he serves his that he serves word as he came out of the Dark Army and seeks to defeat die before he grows new powerful and then we have crocodile the competitively perfect wage and don't turn into the beast king uh he's one of the First Federal headlar says after dying he has a pretty strong says about it he's a he's a cool cut all day

16:58 kind of a slimy little weasel he was willing to use whatever other hidden tactics will let it wavy there's a very slaby Duty kind of sucks he's evil Yoda [Laughter] that'd be weird he doesn't talk like Yoda but otherwise it's evil Yoda yeah well bastards and then we have here Goldie competitor the undead Legion uh he is actually a former disciple of odd like die popping man but he resents about because black guy Hugo was raised by monsters and he believed that if odd was responsible for killing his father when he first defeated Handler so he's understandably upset about that

17:45 and then uh we have flowers are the commander the blizzboys we did he's about to bait and both Fire and Ice which is just extremely funny and then uh best for the competitive Shadow lead and he's very serious this has like a very big robe he doesn't speak a lot you know just very big mystery guy and at the end of variety competitively Dragon Legion he doesn't have too much to do with his episode but he has a very cool mustache mm-hmm fine fine bit of facial hair right there uh so I put uh instead of playing arcade very we have found outfit for headlar we have Brian Drummond the crocodile we had Jason Simpson for sabora we have Lee takar

19:19 in Chicago China's either one and again what is particularly funny for tonight's discussion Vegeta and the original Dragon Ball Z Vegeta again it's uh uh has played that character that's cobra in unborn said KW but we're talking with dragon drive and general Dura and Monster Rancher uh that's a talk as Princess character that's Orla with Future Boy Conan think it's not a bad World trigger and I don't think I find extremely amusing Death Note yeah

20:06 what if we got like what if we got Boston to the place huh what if you come back to the place last game yes love it yeah and uh but right now it has that again everything I already mentioned but also you could definitely which is again funny because it's got to be a very weird voice but maybe like a little raspberry and then uh tahara has played such characters as great day and beat about fire blast double A and then lastly deed Raymond has played

20:53 such characters as three preserves in read about fire blast better clay and Beyblade burst Evolution and a paper I'm in a character I know it best foreign huh how about that yeah I think I like all these folks they've been around a while around blogger that I thought uh because I honestly didn't recognize half of these names stuff you know aside from Brian I mean Brian Drummond's the only Canadian Brian Drummond and uh who is it Ian Richard Cox the the go-to uh Takahashi protagonist guy uh they're like the only Canadian Actors I know off the top of myself but like again he's all but he's you

21:40 know he's also in a lot of Takashi stuff too like yeah but yeah I like a lot of these but I could probably start with like Veronica Pittsburgh because I don't really talk too much of these batch of episodes but I think they both sound appropriate for their roles like the Eddie rebit has a very like deep blue big voice and you gotta get to do that here which I appreciate it outside pretty well yeah Dean does a good job of making Baron seem he's a dude but like what's his deal why why is he here the dark lord the dark King doesn't like

22:27 humans why is he letting this guy run his show uh you know he he he's like authoritative but also like there's a little bit of this mystery about him like what's what's going on which I'm sure I'll find out if I watch more than 13 episodes a beautiful don't have to wait very long uh and yes Alex does just fine with the whole he doesn't does he giggle I'm trying to he makes noise I'm trying to remember what it is uh yeah he makes some noise and he does have like a few speaking lines but otherwise he's just kind of like they're looming in the background he's there to be ominous Alex does a good job he's almost yeah

23:13 and then I guess uh that I guess uh Deborah and crocodile you uh yeah both very applied performances and we took our again this gets to be a really really slimy weasel and it's it's very music I hate him so he's terrible he sucks I don't I don't like him he's really bad yeah yeah because uh Indy first uh yeah in one of the black birds major battles and had large and strong to deal with guy so he ends up going the answer here to go to the brewery for helping the board's like oh well you know the words okay well you know

24:01 God clearly has a weakness you know where if you you know take his grandpa hold the boxes you can get him to do whatever you want just just I just threatened his loved ones it's easy and I had crocodile head on the other hand is not really too kid about doing all that but he decides to go along with it because he's kind of upset about losing baby's not a very good thing to cheat you can fight fair he's he he may be a villain but he's got nobility damn it he's standards uh yeah I do that I really didn't like uh David I really do like uh what Jason's doing

24:48 that's how can I edited it's really a lot of fun I don't like I like I'm not very like uh probably not oh but the movie with him but I really do but I really do like the boys against crocodile fans like this very big it is very big booming energy since it's really kind of deep breath away cartoon voice you know you get to hear a lot about Saturday it's very uh it's very like it's very it's very much in my mind I would always think of like 80s cartoon character kind of voice uh he doesn't sound exactly like Bebop and Rocksteady but if there was a third one based on some other animal he'd probably sound like this um but I also give him she's very fun and he sounds like a big scaly monster but uh I also do

25:34 appreciate that he's able to get he's able to give the crocodile in some like real pathos when the time calls for it uh which I feel like is not easy to do when you're doing a big silly cartoon voice uh I think he gets it across yeah yeah yeah he does do a very good down about getting around the whole like other bad Warriors like where he really wants to but die fairly and it kind of gets upset when he can't do that and that's new kind of go back on that first bro I don't need to realize you know I really did read it quite fairly and then eventually accept his winning losers and I think that dates and gets oh that across pretty well

26:20 that he gets to come back yeah be very it'd be very easy to just have him like it gets his butt kicked and that is the last we ever heard of that dude and it is nice that he actually gets like a little bit of an arc to himself yeah yeah he gets to go back and like be redeemed [ __ ] not not everyone in the dark Army's terrible some of them are just some of them just fell in with their lot because of who they are yeah and uh I guess I guess that probably would be a good uh segue dude talking about hyoku who was also kind of there for like the weird reasons

30:57 it is bird again he's just kind of like a very big shall we Overlord so far but he does a very good job of like reading that specific I do better do to him that's kind of immediately drawn to him you know they they picked they made the right choice as far as like you know you know for a character who I don't believe we see like we don't see him on we don't see him see him at any point he's mostly just a voice for the stretch of the show if memory serves yeah uh they they do that Paul does a good job of having a lot of presence just in his voice alone that is very intimidating and scary which makes a lot of fun

31:43 again very very very Dr claw very evil mastermind who he doesn't he doesn't go and cause trouble himself he has a lot of lackeys to do that but he comes off as a as a menacing figure nonetheless yeah uh yeah that is yeah yeah that is yeah that's pretty amusing but but that one is also very using yeah who is just they're clearly having a lot of fun getting to do it since we played Vegeta again which is funny because when he first shows up my my first thought when I looked at him it's like you look like Piccolo in the game don't you you're just you're you're Piccolo through like the manga artist style and then whoever that was the character designer for this anime style aren't you

32:28 uh maybe maybe it's just that he's green I don't know he looks he looks I can see I could see the more Piccolo looking version of him inside yeah yeah you can't kind of see it but yeah but yeah uh Brian rabbit is just dude he's a lot of fun as a headlines that's a very it's kind of a very obvious like exactly what it is that it did kind of bad guy no he's he's wonderfully just hammy and menacing just like it's a bad dude he's he's the former Dark Lord he's not a good guy we're gonna we're gonna leave all that empathy and nuance and emotional complexity that likes of crocodile and and he Uncle he's just rotten if maybe a

33:13 little a little annoyed that he's not the top dog anymore but hey he's not dead who cares yeah that is kind of the way I Breathing by driving performance and why I kind of participated a bit because yeah it did I also gotta had a tip out of Twitter for a while and then he's kind of really upset that he was kind of you know one of Dr freeze and uh but pronounce that very in the process of work out of energy okay everybody but he is clearly like a little annoyed that he's kind of a flumpty now He he'll eat I don't know where The Story Goes obviously but I can I can smell sort of starscream-esque I'm going to betray the boss so I can be the boss storyline in his future uh no idea if that's going to happen but I can I can see it

33:59 okay very interesting director I will say that all right like yeah but yeah it really I really do dig Brad Drummond's performance a lot is this you know a little bit more calm and menacing and then like and then as we get in any kind of graduated Rivals and it drags a bit more with like uh he gets to go a little bit more ahead by the gold one it's really a lot of fun but I did I did want to give credit to what it you know I I'm not I'm not super

34:44 familiar with Dragon Quest I have a I have a vague knowledge of kind of the plot line mostly in that you know there's the good guys there's a bad guy and the good guys fight the goodbye you know Etc um but as someone who is not very familiar I did like that at least in his fights would die when Dai is able to get the upper hand on him I thought Brian did a good job of communicating like oh this isn't supposed to happen this is wrong uh like he did a good job of like establishing Stakes for this world uh through his performance in that way and I I enjoyed that it helped build up what's going on in here for for some oh yeah oh yeah that's actually the uh aspect of the translation I for Dr Benson previously but yeah something I do appreciate is that if you have played the games uh

35:30 this year that's what we do is use a lot of the terminology for the games I appreciate a franchise with a good solid localization Bible you can turn to uh yeah probably a little bit of video game watching that respect okay like they do call things items and whatnot it's an ad yeah like all this and again and like it even like you know the whole content of a hero it's not even like oh you know like you know to what it is like no Heroes It's gotta be like I think it could be in a Dragon Quest it was very I know I know that that's

36:16 very I I read a like a little bit of the beginning of the manga because it's on the show and Jump app now uh I'm actually kind of like more of it I'm wondering if it keeps that up because that's that's a very popular style now but I feel like that was not a thing and I want to say the manga's from the 90s originally maybe the late 80s yeah uh like that was that was not really a thing yet and it's it's very funny to me that this like random Dragon Quest spin-off is maybe the protogenitor to this particular style of fantasy anime that's now like just so so I've read I've picked up random light novels that are in a fantasy setting and they're like ah this is just a video game but a book I see all right that's how you're that's where you're going

37:02 that is funny because I because I did also read like a little bit of the manga on the job app that was kind of funny because the market does have like oh the characters have like levels and stuff and Anime and Anime does kind of Bruce Lee admit that or who I guess I don't know I keep the setting a little bit more natural which I guess kind of Worth or what I'm doing it probably it probably helps that it's not as direct a tie-in anymore uh like I don't I don't think I don't know and I don't know when this was made but at least right now there's no obvious like the most recent Dragon Quest thing I think that came out was technically Yakuza 7 it the extend the extended tribute to Dragon Quest games that that is in its own right yeah yeah well Dragon Quest bro dude get it that's a
