0:45 we covering today now huh look I'm sorry for this roundabout way of telling you you're awesome but uh let's be real you're here for the show I bet you can't stand waiting anymore oh well I won't keep you then enjoy today's [Music] episode hello one and all and welcome to dub talk the podcast where we discuss the latest and greatest in English dubs my name is Stephanie and today I am joined by Megan uh Hey guys uh there's a bunch of weird stoned people outside my
1:31 house that seems like a uh a personal problem uh I'm not the stone people aren't in this part oh yeah that's right we're not there yet we have jet uh I need some help like uh uh I my parents my parents just adopted a new sibling like he's being really abusive like he he he kicked my puppy he he drew in the incinerator it's terrible oh yours too God oh no oh no we already brought the puppy into this oh no okay okay look it's sh they kiss my girlfriend
2:20 look look at this point it's impossible to talk about this Sho not mentioning at least one dog dying it's it's tradition it's unfortunately it's true we also have lack the Watcher with us tonight happy yippy y p huzzah all right God oh God we started strong with the puppy death oh what was the dog's name Danny Danny Danny thank you Danny poor Danny like is it truly the show that we're talking about if one animal does not get brutally injured per part well remember cars saves a dog actually yeah that's true it balances itself out yeah car saves a dog but a squirrel gets murdered but cannibalized by another squirrel this isn't really relevant to the podcast but who's actually read the
3:05 Manga Here by any chance no like I I've read I think up to part four okay but what I was going to say was what's interesting is that the anime takes a much more subtle approach to Danny's death than the manga does oh good God in in the manga you Danny jumps out of the furnace and you see him burning oh my God theime the very smart decision to just cut away before any of that happens so it's much more subtle oh no the anime makes a lot of really smart narrative decisions that if you read the Manga you can appreciate oh all right anyway aside from dead dogs uh today today is an extra special episode
3:52 of the podcast because this is our 300th episode of the main series woohoo yay yeah that was a Del reaction I I I wasn't sure if you were going to keep talking or not so that's oh okay that's fair but yay we've been doing this for like almost 10 years and 300 at least 300 episodes now insert the uh insert the uh lethal company yippe noise yippe [Music] yipp I I have never played that game and I started immediately doing the hand motions I did that at magfest nice I love that all right now
4:38 in the past when we've hit milest episodes similar to this we go back and try to fix some oopsies we might have had as in episodes we previously had a recording of of some kind um but they didn't see the light of day for one reason or another uh episode 100 was free iobi swim club while episode 200 was pron School Believe It or Not There is actually one more episode we previously recorded that never made that never saw the light of day yeah that's my fault yeah it's all my fault well the first time it was my fault actually oh okay it was kind of both of our faults because you forgot to record yourself the first time no told me I didn't know back then and it was my fault for not telling you and the other reason it was
5:24 my fault was because I was lying through my teeth but here we are almost 10 years later uh today we're going to finally open Pandora's Box and cover this last uh Missing episode or maybe it's better to say that we're Dawning on our Stone masks I don't know uh today we're going to be covering the first season of David Productions JoJo's Bizarre Adventure that was released in 2012 so over 10 years ago the excuse me the dub was released in 2015 I think or something right the or original show the first season of the show came out in Japan in 2012 right yeah I'm just remembering because it took a few years for us to actually get an English dub for this this is true yeah yeah this is
6:10 true yeah I think it was the dub itself is almost 10 years old but the show is over 10 years old yeah yeah I think how it went was like the first season came out no one likes it over here which is like really weird at the time and then like start and then St Crusaders came out and croll finally picked it up uh right we got a few EP of that streaming and then like out of nowhere water Brothers went hey here's a test up and then we got and then eventually we got the single worst DVD release of anime of all time I have that some that was a dark time I have that storage mind you I'm trying to get rid of that [ __ ] um no don't that's a [ __ ] cultural artifact yeah it's going to be valuable someday we'll see we'll see uh for the
6:57 uninitiated I'm not going to give a full summary of the show quite yet um cuz there's a few reasons cuz trying one is cuz trying to describe this Show's story is a little convoluted especially when we when we're covering this first season speaking of this first season we're going to be discussing part one Phantom blood and part two battle tendency cuz that makes up that first season of the show yeah uh so another smart DEC decision the anime made in my opinion so yeah so I'm I'll give you brief story brief summaries of each of the parts as we go on um cuz each one has their own you has their own story to
7:44 it um and but there are pieces obviously because this is a family drama in a sense um that kind of carry over so we'll cover the we'll cover the story of these as we go as always we're going to be covering the show's cast Staffing performances and the overall enjoyment we have of the show so to so guys make sure your breathing is on point tonight because this is going to be a fun ass time all right sorry Asthma as asthma havers please have your inhalers nearby yeah you need you need to work on your training there man uh so yeah so like so this was so this was on my mind and I
8:30 was kind of curious It's since they have a lot of overlap I I decided to look up which game first between J and castania apparently Castlevania predat it by year I was kind of surprised I F if I I fur if I think Castlevania was probably taking L of bit for Jojo yes I I actually looked that up too a while back and I was surprised to find out that JoJo predates both Castlevania and like Vampire Hunter D damn all right so why don't we get started and and talk about our ADR staff and we're also cuz I don't know where the [ __ ] to put this one um as a as a slightly last minute request by jet because it is the only reoccurring character throughout all of the parts of Jojo we're also going to
9:16 discuss the narrator of the series yeah he's still doing it isn't he he's still doing it um but we'll get to that so we're going to be talking about our ADR directors our script writers and like I said we're going to discuss the narrator of the show cuz I don't know where the [ __ ] to put this man all right our ADR directors we have two we have Kevin McMullen who also has directed the only other directing credit um now to let y'all know uh since I kind of was busy the past few weeks Andrew one night a couple days ago took the time to find credits for me so these are stuff he picked mind you except for the narrator uh we have Kevin McMullen who's only other directing credit is actually cellon I saw that and then
10:03 our I saw that show I haven't seen that dub I don't think um and then our other director is one we all know we all love him it's Patrick sites he is Al he has directed other series such as aeto anohana and Mr Osamu as for our script writers we have um four of them attached to the show we have Edward Murray who has from what Andrew apparently has found no other credits huh we have Michael MCCC of course has also written for shows like fate day night unlimited blade Works God Eater and Grand blue fantasy the animation we have again Patrick sites
10:48 who has written for shows such as steinsgate garl the animation and Dragon Ball Zai and finally we have the one and only Tony Oliver who is written for series such as AA 7 G gin lagon and vandre as for the narrator of this entire franchise it's one Mr David Vincent who has voice characters such as archer in Fate Zero FX in Hunter Hunter and every man and and the man that everyone seems to thirst for from Jiu-Jitsu kaisen Kento nomy okay there are two types of jiujitsu kais and girlies there are the girlies who say [ __ ] it yolo and have their eyes for one Mr Gojo the man who
11:36 would not pay for your meal at the shittiest place the other ones are girlies who have like a desire to settle down with nomy the most stable of men who as we all learn has the grip of a god yep okay I I just want to make something clear David Vincent he was Gilgamesh was he yeah he was he was also Gilgamesh yes yeah you said Archer and I got confused but he's in he's in a few different parts of the to Fair gilg no Gilgamesh was he was archer in zero in zero okay was Archer oh yeah yeah yeah oh my God but he wasn't the archer in unlimited
12:22 blade works that's why cuz that's kg Tang yeah yeah okay that I forgot it's been a hot minute since I watched zero and I completely forgot that Archer I just knew we get comments if I didn't okay okay St to be fair Google switches jobs like every other week this is also true yeah in one game he's a freaking shop owner in Japan right what yeah fate Samurai Remnant the typ moon franchise is so weird honestly what if what if what if JoJo's is not just goil gesh reading making fan fiction right I'm kidding it's it's what happens when you make a multi million doll franchise based on pornography anyway um great great um so I kind of just wanted to
13:07 make this into more of like a general discussion kind of situation like we've already been doing um to kind of start this off because lack actually asked this question in the chat before we started recording um you didn't know that Tony Oliver didn't direct this first one cuz he directed everything else from Stardust on but not this one yeah yeah I didn't I didn't really I mean it didn't shock me that Patrick sites was one of the ADR directors uhhuh but I really thought Tony Oliver just did it from the beginning honestly no yeah sometimes I forget that he didn't either yeah I think it was a good time where B zoo was like pretty swamped and they were kind of like cycling through directors a lot so I so so I guess Kevin just happened to be the guy who was available so plus being a lupon fan I'm
13:54 just used to Tony Oliver directing a lot of stuff so although I think Richard epard s most of blon stuff but anyway yeah I think he does but um no I it's very interesting that Tony starts off as a writer on this and then he graduates to director from Stardust and just stays with it from that point on um I man the the the his history of this whole freaking dub aside and how that came to be this the the directing and writing is a lot of fun it's it's so funny to look back on this now because there was a time when we kind of Jojo fans kind of thought we might ever get an English dub of the anime so right it it's so funny to be on like almost 10
14:39 years of having this dub and especially because like the only anime version of Jojo also at like before this iteration was that one OVA that was taken from Stardust Crusaders right famously with Mario yeah yeah so yeah so f with a B wait what was Charles Martin in that old dub uh he was like the mayor that do drives I think the mayor of Cairo yeah yeah that's the uh that's the uh JoJo's OVA that's never going to see the light of day because uh certain region of the world is really pissed about its existence yep especially not right now um oh boy uh but like um I think he was also like a Speedwagon like employee or
15:26 something so oh it's it's a me a Speedwagon employee it's a me I work for Speedwagon Foundation Yahoo uh I wanted to ask uh looking at the script writers um were there like specific writers who worked on specific parts or did they all work on both parts so this is only I pulled this from a&n and there's nothing according to Ann that specifically has them yeah I mean personally if I had to guess just based on who's renegate like I'm going to guess Patrick did probably most if not all the part one just because like because just because a lot of the pros kind of like very feater play yeah just got of feel that's something that he would do which is exactly how you need to do it honestly
16:13 no yeah in this cuz it's cuz part one especially it takes place in England in like um the mid to late 1800s it's basically it's a Gothic horror with martial arts that's basically what it is that's really what it is is um that's not to say that the script doesn't have its moments of Camp though oh yeah but so got the horror so you know it's true I think the best there we go uh I would say I think that the biggest difference in uh the writing styles that you can see is definitely how all the dialogue in part one is a lot more Prim proper it has its moment but you get to part two and part two's dialogue is [ __ ] all over the place part two's dialogue is
16:59 written more like an American comic book interesting this would make sense because got at least a couple these script writers that work on stuff like did before so yeah I yeah it also kind of feels like an uh like an American 80s movie mhm uh For Better or For Worse uh yeah definitely then again then again part two is like an Indiana Jones movie for better for worse indana Jones but like if the main character was like Bugs Bunny as Superman basically that's how that's how I've always described uh Joseph joar he's basically a Bugs Bunny with Superman yeah that's Joseph joar in a nutshell you're right Bugs Bunny with the powers of like Superman or something that that makes sense I will say Phantom blood
17:47 specifically yeah makes some really and we'll get into it more as we get into the cast but Phantom blood like dialogue wise makes some really inspired choices honestly that I never would have expected a d a English dub to really take and I I don't necessarily know if it always works but the fact that they were willing to take some real risks with the dialogue really impressed me even when I first heard the dub uh uh yeah agreed there are also a couple of other things I want to point out but so uh the first being that uh while this doesn't apply to other parts for I know I guess they kind of decided it wasn't really worth keeping up but this is the only part but this is the only thing thatly the use of accents and while accents could be something of a mixed
18:33 bag I think as far as like these two parts go what kind of wor it works for me because I feel like it does a really good job of feeding it into the kind of over the toop nature of Jojo and I think it kind of adds a little bit more flavor to it yeah I would say my only issue with the accent work is that there are some actors who just cannot keep that energy up yeah unfortunately but also you could say that about the Japanese dub too to some degree fair fair like I think the thing is too is that this like I don't want to beat around the bush about this because it it had come out about the JoJo do casting process that for a while the casting
19:20 process was not genuinely as fair to certain actors as it is now and I kind of am very happy they cut off doing the accent right before the part that takes most place mostly in Egypt yeah oh um yeah yeah yeah yeah speaking of which uh while I do think while I do enjoy most I do think most of the casting choices here are like really good and I'm pretty happy with how a lot of the casts turned out there is there is one casting choice in particular that I have to criticize that we'll get to when we get to part two and and something that's particularly irritating because it's kind of been something of an ongoing problem well not quite an ongoing
20:05 problem with the franchise but it has happened more than once which is kind of annoying yay I love that um but no it's the directing and the writing actually I I I enjoy it there are moments where it's like what the hell am I watching but that's the whole idea of Jojo anyway first and foremost um though I am really impressed with the writing and the direction on Phantom blood because given how the story of phantom blood was adapted um what was it jet 45 chapters in the span of Nine episodes yeah they cond a lot yeah they
20:53 they had to condense a lot so there's actually a lot more young Jo Jonathan and than we actually see so yeah so it's so they had to like shorten it in a in a in a span of time CU also this anime this first season was made for like $12 so it's true yeah it was a very cheap production so yeah yeah they definitely made that for it with style though yeah no yeah and especially once you finally get the ball going and you switch it from Phantom blood to battle tendency it really starts to come into its own so each SE so the between the two parts it kind of has its own unique style to it which is very interesting um and then it
21:39 doesn't exactly carry 100% to Future Parts but it's still kind of a twing of it is still kind of there you know what I mean shifting over to um David Vincent our wonderful narrator and the only character of some kind that stays with the entirety of the franchise what do we think of David Vincent I know like at this point it's hard not to just associate him with Jo Jo as a whole like his narration is just his narration is just really ionic at this point and he doesn't really fantastic job with it like I love like I love like I love the energy he has the way he kind of the way he kind of goes off like a baseball commentator it's it's really incredible
22:24 yeah I appreciate the um the energy he brings to the role uh I I do think it's funny that he would eventually go on to play one of Doo's henchmen too oh yeah that's great he plays the guy who controls the son who only is in a car most of the time I think or no that's that's two different aren't they no he's the wheel fortune that's what he is that's right oh I I vaguely remember but I also never finished Stardust Crusaders so I kind of remember this but I also don't right technically I haven't even started um I haven't even started Stone ocean but I've read the Manga so I know what happens see see this is my knowledge of Jojo I've watched part one and part two I've
23:10 watched the first season of star dust Crusaders and maybe a few into battle of Egypt I haven't even done diamond is unbreakable I've watched all of golden wind I'm halfway through Stone ocean so my watch of JoJo is all over the [ __ ] place yeah for the record you are right uh lacky is The Wheel of Fortune guy zzy you know zezy top but like right uh yeah I've only watched all of this yeah I I've watched all of part one part two and I've watched all of part four and part four is still my favorite so oh I love diamond is unbreakable I I oh Diamond's unbreakable is my favorite part it I think in my opinion this might be a a uh a controversial opinion I think it has the best final fight with
23:56 any villain oh absolutely oh yeah it it's got also it just yeah it's it's got a very somber but satisfying ending um I like David Vincent because he's just like forever just like bouncy and like that I I like the idea of like the baseball narrator which is really funny because this is just like a level of cosmic [ __ ] baseball that's going on are you saying oh that's a baseball oh that's a baseball yeah listen I watch I watch sports I watch a lot of I watch a lot of sports you watch the sports ball yeah I don't I don't watch Baseball sports ball but I watch hockey sports ball going back to the manga for a minute it plays into the fact that you know I love here hio oraki
24:43 but he described everything in the manga like he he was the narration guy like not a single frame in his manga did he not explain what was going on so much position dumping so that's why those hard covers are thicker than a brick God damn it man no David Vincent is a delight and especially cuz like so I sometimes forget that David Vincent is a narrator and then I go to [ __ ] Jiu-Jitsu kaisen and it's like [ __ ] this is the same guy hold on
25:29 he's not a he's not a baseball commentator commentator in his is his normal job what the [ __ ] remember that he is also soda and boo stay dogs so this is also true he is we uh we mentioned this earlier but um off off mic but originally he was not actually the narrator of Jojo yes that's true in the test dub it was actually somebody else which I don't even know if you can find the test do anymore so no yeah was Dave mow and I think and from what I recall he also kind of played it like a baseball commentator which is uh definitely very interesting when he considered that Dave mow was probably best known for playing the anti yeah I mean I remember when I was listening to the to the test because I knew I I was I had already watched G
26:14 Leon like years before and I was just like oh that's the anti- spirals voice he's he's doing the narration for Jojo that's interesting any other thoughts on the directing writing or our wonderful narrator friend I I I will say this I do not know if uh how much of Joseph's dialogue was like unscripted because some of his reaction lines I'm like okay there's no way they scripted that that that that feels like very just in the moment right it's possible especially because like given one given the nature of Joseph joar first and foremost but two given who voices him like it's it's one of those things where like inherently trying to English dub
27:00 JoJo is gonna be hard because which which is kind of ironic considering it's mostly primarily Caucasian Heroes so it's not it's not inherently entrenched with Japanese culture at least not at first yeah but there it's so inherently Japanese and like how it presents itself that there is going to be that cultural issue of trying to bring it over but I'm genuinely impressed with some of the decisions that they made even in battle tendency which isn't as like risk-taking in my opinion but they still figured out how to approach these characters yeah mostly yeah man we haven't even got into it but you know what yeah but you know what the really wild part is looking
27:45 back these earlier Seasons what that they can still get away with like having all the music name references be like mostly accurate oh yeah that's true you're right because like from Stardust onward they ch all of the music references I'm I'm a big firm believer that the the redub names of the pillar men are better than their initial names I mean I mean I mean they aren't that different but they do work yeah about to say San viento San sento instead of I think it's Santana is suppos Santana yeah sorry my nose is being a she's doing lines don't worry about
28:31 it I mean Jo JoJo's it's the80s yeah yeah exactly no we're not even in the 80s right now we're in the 18 we're we haven't even got until 18 still in 80s let party like it's the 1880s sorry my sinuses are being an [ __ ] today uh anyway is there any other thoughts on the staff plus our narrator or do we want to start talking about uh the story I'm good for the story yep I I I love that Michael M MCC is one of the script writers so yep yeah it's great all right so let's move on to so the easiest way to do this from here on out is just covering it as each part so we're going to cover the pertinent
29:17 characters for part one Phantom blood and then the pertinent characters for battle tendency uh we're going to start from the beginning where where all this began and we're going to start with Phantom blood now again since I didn't give you guys a summary in the beginning this is a quick little anend summary um about Phantom blood just so you kind of get a just a glimpse of the story CU there's a lot to it uh beginning its Tale in the 19 in 19th century England young Aristocrat Jonathan joar finds himself locked in bitter rivalry with Dio Brando a lowborn boy who Jonathan's father took under his wing after the death of of Dio's father discontent with his station in life Dio's fathomless
30:03 drive to re over all eventually leads him to seek the supernatural powers of an ancient Aztec Stone mask in the Joe star's possession an artifact that will forever change the destiny of Dio and Jonathan for generations to come that is his b that is his like minimal summary as I can give you it is the most straightforward part of yes this is the most straightforward of all of the parts as far as I know of and it's not cuz the the more the show continues on and with the subsequent Seasons it gets [ __ ] convoluted I mean it's called J bizar adventure for a reason right um so the characters we're going to be covering I think there's only there's only five
30:50 we're going to be talking about in this part right um we have of course uh the JoJo of this of this part of the show we have Jan joar um we have the aform missioned Dio Brando who is the main antagonist of this part we have JoJo's soon Tobe best friend Robert EO Speedwagon best friend the best best friend and Exposition dump uh we have will a zeppy uh who is a mentor to Jonathan and teaches him the um art of hamon which we'll get into that later it's just your weird Italian uncle that you picked up on the side of the road pretty much
31:35 pretty much and then we have Arena Pendleton uh she is the love of Jonathan's life uh she comes she really only comes in sporadically through part one right um but the end result is at the end of part one when everything's all hunky dory supposedly um they get married and uh she has Jonathan's baby she has George yep she has George joar I would like to I would like to come I would like to give an award for Jonathan joar sperm for being the fastest working [ __ ] in all of English History he was ready to go he was ready to go hon sperm but anyway um the ripples of life if you
32:20 will yep yep arena is how we eventually will lead into part two with battle tendency um so the individuals voicing these characters let's start with ARA ARA Pendleton sler joar uh is voiced by Michelle Ruff who has voiced characters such as Yoko litner in G laga euphemia La britania in Kos and HRI sonara in D as zeppo we have so another fun thing with the first season of the JoJo dub is there's a lot of pseudonyms involved this is one of them um we have BJ oi or more appily known as as this point as Joe Amman uh he is voiced characters
33:06 such as Ender in gonzilla the planet eater uh M mitsuda muda kadara and Ken Kenan ASA and Oscar Weber from Violet Ard and Andrew wrot a note for me saying No this is the guy in the episode that made you cry stuff oh yeah pretty sure I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure he was Cyborg 007 in cyborg 009 okay yeah for those who don't understand the Violet ever Garden note um so this is the character that reminded me of my grandfather before he passed so if that tells you enough um as Robert eio Speedwagon we have Keith Silverstein who's played characters such as Hoka in Hunter Hunter
33:53 Makoto suo in K uh and Takashi hayashida in March comes in like a lion of course that one's for Andrew uh as do I'm sorry you said Ahsoka and the only thing I can imagine is like what if Ahsoka and Speedwagon saw each other and the exact thing that my brain went even Speedwagon is afraid Mr joar I think this fell is a pedophile [ __ ] um as a as a good old di Brando uh from start to finish and when I say finish I mean throughout the course of the franchise because Dio
34:39 comes back again uh we have one of our script writers and our direct one of our directors good old Patrick sites uh Patrick is voice characters such as kimachi zakai in Bleach uh loxis dryer in fairy tale and uog in Hunter Hunter and as Jonathan joar we have Johnny Young BOS another Jojo If as it were uh who is voice characters like Ichigo kosaki and bleach uh rosu and G lagon and Vasa Stampede and Trion of all these all these credits are 100% Andrew's doing yeah cuz I've again I've not seen G the god and I and I haven't finished hun Hunter and I have not seen March comes in like a lion and Lou
35:28 yeah yeah before we get into things there was one thing I want to mention just because I thought it was funny okay so so so so in part one we have Do's we have Do's the old like terrible dad who is Dar brother who was voed by yeah who was voiced by Steve kraber you want to know who else Steve kraber plays the dojo who God who Kira's dad in part four God damn it love that huh that's really interesting actually but also shout out to Mark dys and is George joar so yes as as Jonathan's dad oh no as George the son sorry the son no no no no he he plays he plays George
36:14 joar the first oh he does so he's the dad yeah yeah he's the dad that's that's definitely thear he's also one of the best in the dub just putting that out there so oh he was phenomenal Papa joar was phenomenal um anyway uh so I will say this cuz we're not going to we're not necessarily going to be talking about them more in part two um if we want to talk them about them a little bit more we can um both speed wagon and arida do continue on into part two but as older versions of themselves um by that point ARA is ARA joar um not ARA P Pendleton and speed wise has the speed wagon Foundation is an oil
37:00 ton and uses his money for pH philanthropic philanthropic efforts for science and medicine so yeah I think my I think my favorite bit of do is that like the speed back Foundation is around just like ad doart six which is that's a nice touch also the Speedwagon Foundation was actually started because Jonathan wanted to be an archaeologist yeah yep which is a really cool detail that I learned later on so so it's very interesting I'd like to point out that I I genuinely like this is just going to be a compliment for Michelle Ruff her through her whole performance is that I like how she ages her voice as Arena ages yes from the little girl who let's face it does probably one of the most Chad things in the whole series she Arena famously is
37:49 the first person in the entire franchise to stand up to Dio yeah she um he forcefully kisses her and brags about stealing her first kiss so she immediately bends down and starts using muddy water to clean off his lips her her lips Y and it is it is possibly the biggest [ __ ] you that Dio gets as his entire life which is it's just saying a lot seeing as you know he gets beheaded right yeah um and just like I I I also like I I don't know if it's be like let's be real it's probably because the show is made on a Sho string budget back in the day uh but paro's sister looks exactly like her and she [ __ ] slaps D yeah that was yeah well okay this is something we can
38:36 get into in part two but at the time I didn't realize that the photographer that Joseph saves wasn't Suzie Q and I know forgot that too I I know that's weird but I listened to it in Japanese the first time so it didn't register to me that those were two different characters so no yeah I I when I was rewatching I'm like wait that's suszie right and then later on when we get to Italy and like no this is CQ I'm like wait what yeah no no I but like just like Parco sister just also like you know [ __ ] slaps Dio for being a piece of [ __ ] um I love it but yeah the other thing I like about Arena 2 is that like she never stops waiting for for Jonathan to become a good like the better the best man he can be yeah yeah including like nursing him back to health after he
39:23 became a human hot dog um he's got the beef or like you know him just or you know him running off with this weird Italian man on the side of the road um so I I genuinely really like Michelle R's performance I I it's a shame that she doesn't get to be around more often and I like the parts where she's older Ira too um including uh her doing my favorite thing that anybody does to Joseph in the entire show which is uh bonking him with her umbrella because Joseph had the call to ask ask if speed wagon was gay for Grandpa oh see I always thought he was asking her if she and Speedwagon porked no no no I I I took it as cuz
40:10 he's like so was he more than Grandpa's best friend and I took it as did he and Grandpa bone not did you and him bone oh well but he does make a comment about how she's a widowed L like single lady again though yeah like she never remarried but I always took it I always took it as him asking if Grandpa was bisexual uh which I guess is just me um I mean and then Dio definitely is but oh Dio Dio is dio sexuality is yes um the only thing Dio is really sexually attracted to is himself so yeah yeah true like that's why di that's why Dio is not allowed in the PO
40:56 um um but no and then I don't know what to say about Keith the Speedwagon in that uh Ario Speedwagon exists to be the world's greatest plot fairy he is the exposition dump for all of part one I genuinely and this this is besides Pat sit's do I genuinely think Keith Silverstein's Speedwagon is the best part of the part one dub oh 100% yeah he absolutely nailed it it just he he nails such subtle moments for Speedwagon which I know there's an irony in me saying that about Speedwagon but like the scene where he grills do like is genuinely great he does a great job with that like the moment where he says allow me to
41:42 elucidate you it's like that's great that's such excellent like use of of Speedwagon's character oh yeah 100% it's great yeah Speedwagon is definitely like one of my favorite characters in part one the other is [ __ ] do but we'll get to that um no I I enjoy and and to Megan's point with ARA he manages when it gets to older speed Wagon in part two it's not a drastic aging up but it's enough of a little change to make it work and it's more subtle the speed Wagon in part two at times is bit more tired mhm and exhausted with
42:31 everything um so how the toneal tone shifts a little bit as he ages it it's subtle and distinct enough that that I think it works and it helps distinguish both younger speed wagon and the older speed wagon between the two parts pretty well I mean to be fair I also would be tired for uh if I was in a room with straw Heim for even a minute yeah business room getting back to AR going back to ARA for a second I do I did enjoy her a lot in part one I thought Michelle did a I thought I thought Michelle did a pretty good job making her you know s very sweet and supportive while you know also get the deal but I also really like her l in part two where you
43:17 know where you know she's older wiser kind of does a that does a good job of playing certain Grandma to which uh yeah to which she to both Michelle's performance also just like also you also you know just a rocky writing in general for what of to me probably one of my favorite bits in part two where where her where her Smokey and jph are like in a restaurant and subdued to being racist or Smokey and she despite being an old British lady like she sees this immediately s about the guy I'm like you know what shees good people Rocky was one of the better manga CA writing women during his time honestly so yeah the only thing that could Nerf him was jump editors right do why don't we talk about uh our
44:04 Italian friend zeppo cuz the zeppo family is the other family at least for season one that overarch over arches a little bit because we'll get we'll obviously get the part two and we'll get to his grandson Caesar in a little bit um but as for will will is what what will is he's a Dandy that's right a Dandy that's the right word I want he's a Dandy it's it's he he's literally a roadside Dandy because he meets them on the roadside it's true I was just looking through my notes I'm trying to find my my notes about him he's he has so much fun it's a fun Mentor role is what this ends up
44:50 being primarily the Jonathan but to an extent to Speedwagon too even though Speedwagon is not learning how to use hamon or anything like that um hamon for those who don't know cuz this is never going to come up again after season one weirdly not true not true old Joseph does use hon a couple times uh this is what happens when I don't finish Stardust Crusaders and also there's the spin in the reboot Universe which is kind of basically hon so oh okay but um hamon is essentially this life energy this power that is used through breathing um and it becomes the main the main power used for fights in part one and part two I feel like a
45:38 very famous Sonic song can uh sign up can sum up uh how uh hamont Works which is Can You Feel the Sunshine as it brightens up your day but anyway um Joe Amman as uh will zeppy it's it's a fun Mentor role that also has this fun little pep to it the the Dandy comet is the is a great comparison um the and the tone of voice aside from it being this Italian Dandy of sorts it it it makes it so much more fun cuz he seems like this gen generic martial arts martial artist kind of guy too if that makes sense and it's such it's such a fun
46:23 contrast what we have with Jonathan Speedwagon well there's something really interesting about zeppy that Iraqi talked about in interviews he deliberately wanted zeppy to feel like a younger kind of guy for a mentor because mentors in manga were typically really old dudes you know like yeah roshi obviously and guys like that but he wanted someone who looked younger who looked like he could still fight and still be strong in a fight CU zeppy is probably not even like he's definitely not pushing 50 he's probably like in his no he is old it's just Tom on keeps him young yeah yeah yeah no he's like old yeah yeah cuz he does mention right before he bed that he didn't have a family when he was younger so like yeah oh you're right and they also bring the fact up again that hon can make you look younger and we bring it up again with
47:10 Lisa Lisa also you see him literally aging as he dies that's true when he passes his h on to Jonathan yeah you right you right sorry you right but Zepp is a [ __ ] bro man he's great um and uh Joel akman when he um when he does like those big grandio speeches he just Nails it it is so much fun to listen to like the whole you know uh you know would you say that an insect is is brave for hiding or whatever he says basically it's a great moment yeah I think for me my my favorite moment with uh zeppo is uh this the parts where they're in the tunnel fighting Jack the Ripper and he's just
47:56 like all right Jo Jonathan go on have fun and Speedwagon's like the [ __ ] buddy and he goes no no he's got this like he's got to learn if he doesn't learn now he's dead and one of his lines is a great Testament to some of the great risks that this dub took where the famous hey baby is translated to hey Bambino yeah the yeah CU a lot of especially with part especially with part one um a lot of the scripting where kind of stays in line with the late 19th century English kind of speech and Pros which works very very nice oh well he's Italian too same idea you know what I mean um but no Joe aan is is a delight
48:44 he just has this little pep to his step and it's it makes for a fun and interesting dynamic between um him Johnny and Keith their little Trio cuz zeppy doesn't come in until I think episode five yeah five about halfway through part one yeah cuz part one's only like nine episodes long out of the two parts yeah yeah yeah and he kind of shows up and just just very much just throws Jonathan into well we're training now and stuff and I think the thing that I like to and this is just a compliment to both I think araki's writing and the script writer taking notice of the material that he's
49:29 working on um he has a lot more pleasant sounding and approachable sounding than say his grandson Caesar is yeah yeah oh Caesar Caesar Caesar who was ironically enough one of my favorite secondary characters in the franchise ladies love Caesar he's the he's the trunks of uh of of of Jojo I'm the exception to this see see for the longest time Caesar was one of my was my favorite secondary JoJo character and then I watch golden wind and then you have buera and I'm like no this [ __ ] this [ __ ] wins everything for me see here's my thing I'll get more of it into part two uh I I'm not the
50:16 biggest fan of ceser oh okay no rewatching my golden standard for like secondary like to the hero JoJo's voice is I [ __ ] love ok dumb ass right and you know of course okas created uh out of that was um kabara obviously forw show so it's amazing but uh oh sorry yeah go on uh yeah uh yeah uh just continuing with what said about Joe I really do my D he has to his voice the Swagger the way he does all the really dramatic speeches it I really love it energy and then there's one but one other thing I appreciate and like I and I know it's
51:01 kind of like okay it's one of those things where okay that's it's probably not intentionally there's no way they didn't do it intentionally but it's still just wild they got away with it and it's something I also really appreciate appreciate about the dub script which is H which is when Zepp bites it specifically specifically speciically like right after he like right after he gets cut to and he's like about to die pass his how out to Jojo and like credit to Joe aquan for saying this line like en time sincerely JoJo you simply must keep yourself together [Laughter] yeah you know for for as hammy as the series is and how deliberately corny it is it actually does death scenes
51:46 surprisingly well it oh yeah look 100% like like I was I was close to tearing up on the boat when it was on the boat with erina saying goodbye to John yeah I I I teared up during the Caesar part but primarily we we'll talk I I want to talk about that more when we talk about part two it's it's known for being an incredibly dramatic and silly show but when it does emotional scenes well it does them really well honestly it does they hit hard the part where just Mark and Johnny uh tearing out your your heart with George's death scene yeah yep it's great or when um the way that Mark Mark Dyson uh delivers to to Jonathan that Danny is gone and they
52:33 they buried him before he got home so we wouldn't have to see [Music] it back to dead dogs ah every every every season has an animal biting it primarily a dog it's great except not part two was part two didn't part two had horses and that's why I said animal and also cannibalistic squirrel yeah squir crazy weird super squirrels oh yeah also the snake there was that one snake yeah and octopus so many oh [ __ ] cars like controlling every living pan organism [ __ ] piran [ __ ] the [ __ ] piranhas we'll get to that that there's
53:20 an old internet reference for you Zoomers listening all right um so why don't we talk about the men of the hour yes let's let's let's talk about Patrick and Johnny as Doo and Jonathan Jo I actually have some a little something interesting to talk about with when we get to Johnny so uh okay I mean let's let's all be real Patrick sites owns every single aspect about di Brando in English this is the role he was born to play yeah 100% yeah it really is wild to think he been played this for like over a decade at this point and it's yeah it's it's like Colleen clinkenbeard playing ER of scarlet it's just they were born for these roles basically so yeah like if
54:08 you don't know Patrick sites used to be an English teacher um oh I didn't know that actually explains a lot for for people who didn't know Patrick sites used to be an English teacher that must be why he and J Michael tanum work so well together I guess I don't know probably but um but Doo Brando has the execution of Doo Brando has everything that you want from it with the flare of a a English teacher who is forced to to had the drama club right just having the time of his goddamn life not to mention they fixed some of the egregious like wrong English that the Japanese use in this oh thank God like like you know it was me Dio was changed to but it was I Dio because that's grammatically correct so yeah yeah so thanks thanks thanks
54:57 guys but no like Patrick I would definitely say is like the highlight of part one cuz he will steal every scene he's in and chew it to bits like it is such a Tor of force like part one alone is a Tor of force but and again granted I haven't again I haven't finished stst Crusaders but from what I can recall from what I did watch of it he's also being set up to be a Tor of force again right from what I remember of that's that part so yeah yeah yeah it's kind of funny because yeah it's kind of funny because if you really think about part one as a whole and well it is like while Jonathan is technically the star if you really think about it this is mostly just Theo's origin story MH yeah yeah because
55:42 Dio becomes a huge character like a huge antagonist throughout majority of this franchise right everybody every time you think that they've gotten rid of Dio Brando you have not gotten rid of Dio br yeah yeah and I really do appreciate the evolution of the character throughout this part cuz like cuz when it starts he's not exactly like he's not exactly sympathetic but he is but he is definitely kind of very fueled by a lot of the resentment he has for his dad and I feel like Patrick does a really good job of kind of getting a lot of that resentment and anger across and how much he really hates the fact that he resembles his dad but but then as it goes along and de commits more evil Deeds before you know finally getting called out by speed wagon who was oh no this dude has just been terrible the
56:28 entire time and then like after that Revelation de just kind of like starts rebeling it it more kind of says like well if I mean if I'm a bad guy I'm just going to be a bad guy just gu to start rolling with it he he becomes I'm going to steal a term from another anime he becomes an egoist yeah God I mean there's a there's except he's not playing soccer he's playing football maybe this is maybe this is giving Iraqi a little too much credit but there is a deliberate reason why his name is dio the fact that he sees himself as a god basically yeah because Doo's like I am all powerful it's all about me I will take everything for myself Maha and then he's just a disembodied head
57:17 um in [Laughter] life but no Patrick this Dio is this scene cealing hammy chewing like Tor of force is so much fun to watch him but there are also Parts where where Patrick's performance is genuine and that he tries to be like this actual like sad like guy who's really down on his luck and stuff and I think Patrick Nails the lying oh yeah parts of do too oh yeah cuz do will lie through his teeth and get out of almost every situation especially before
58:02 he's found out to be this evil piece of [ __ ] like when when they're in their younger years right like it's it's so good I mean Dio Dio is pretty evil from the start because he trips Jonathan and then he tries to poke his eye out right yeah yeah what [ __ ] does that I was about to answer that question so you'd be surprised but I'm not going to say I just did uh what else you say about Patrick I I that I love it and I'm so glad that when they decided to keep fully dubbing this that they kept him around like because I believe the the test dub was only for part three at first correct yes it was Patrick so he was cast was he cast as Dio in that or would Dio never show up okay good because I I remember well when
58:49 the when the test dubcast came out and like the list was there everybody was kind of like oh these are all like really good choices for who's playing who like with yeah is it okay if we talk about the Stardust Crusaders dub for a second yeah yeah just a littleit yeah I think I think the only thing I think literally the only cting TS was the narator yeah it was literally the because the the test up was so good because people saw like oh Matt Mercer is playing jodo oh that's a really good choice Like Richard epar is playing old man Joseph like oh that makes perfect sense like everyone was pretty much cast exactly how you would expect them to be cast so yeah I don't think yeah but like I guess we'll now move on to the the the the greatest Chad to ever Chad Jonathan joar
59:35 before we do does anybody else have thoughts about Patrick's Doo um when I do my di parodies I usually am influence by him so he is now like the gold standard of Deo impersonation it's great when I when I do my de your voice it's basically this so oo nice there you go all right all right Jonathan the man the other man of the hour Jonathan Jonathan Jonathan joar was too good for the sinful [ __ ] Earth Jonathan joar is just having one continuous bad day the whole course of this at least he got laid before he died we know that that's true he's one of he's only oh wait no we
1:00:20 know at least there's at least three Joe star who got laid um yes yes Jonathan Joseph and jodo yes we at least know that they did I mean I mean depending on how you look at it Jonathan got it twice God damn it Jonathan wait Jonathan got it twice or Joseph oh no Joseph Jon oh yeah technically yeah Jonathan's body got it a couple times right no several times actually that's true that's true Jonathan's body definitely did a few times you know I've never met my biological father he could probably be di Dio's head on Jonathan's body um it would explain a lot
1:01:06 jordo jordo yeah and also like three other kids who were in stone ocean so oh yeah I haven't finished Stone ocean oops I mean technically he might have also gotten with maybe with poochie too so um oh oh oh there going over those to um but like I I I really like Johnny's performance I think that Johnny's accent work maybe not the strongest yeah but he got Jonathan's heart down yeah the what makes Johnny work overall even though his English accent is not great um is that he is committed to the role like he he goes for it Full Tilt like especially in the scenes where he's doing the big grandio
1:01:51 speeches he's just going for it he's like he's it's of those things where it's like the performance at least is so sincere and Earnest that it makes up for the the shortcomings Jonathan is of all the JoJo's in the franchise Jonathan is the gentleman right Jonathan has is this has this Noble mindset his his honor his all of this stuff right and Johnny plays that plays all those parts of that character very very well and it definitely helps carry through the story of phantom blood especially because we are centered around Jonathan throughout the whole course of this um I do agree that the
1:02:38 accent might not have been there at at times though um I did try to see like with the credits if there was potentially like a dialect coach involved and it doesn't seem like there's one listed um so uh from my understanding this D had a very quick turn around yeah yeah so more than like they they didn't bring in a dialect coach if there was a dialect coach they probably need to be fired sorry um but I love Johnny to be fair this accent to me is not the most egregious thing yeah um no it's really not it's honestly not when when we get to part two there's a questionable accent in there that even I have to go oh no a certain Italian man
1:03:27 um oh I was actually I was thinking more a certain German man for that's oh I enjoyed that I'm not going to lie to you well it's not so much the performance that I have a problem with it's the fact that it's not even like the right accent but we'll get into that later we'll get that it's still a lot of fun uh anyway um no Jonathan Jonathan's personality and his character traits Johnny Johnny Bosch is able to like portray them so so well and his interactions and and the dynamic between himself and Patrick's Doo is just phenomenal the back and forth that the two of them have is is just so much fun and that's the main focus of part one is the relationship
1:04:13 and the back and forth between these two um the these two I guess quote unquote like adoptive Brothers in a way um yeah I I I like Johnny I like Johnny's Jonathan um yeah yeah I like it a lot again I got re me before the exit work is a little questionable but Johnny definitely makes up for it with his sincerity his performance he I really like a lot of really like the way he gets across Jonathan's whole like gentlemanly nature really well and while you know he doesn't get a lot of opportunities to be subtle I did I didn't really like the way he handled like you know his final SE with de when they're on the boat and it's about to explode just that there's there's something about Johnny's the way that Johnny talks about Dio where it's like
1:05:00 you feel all of Jonathan's hate for Dio but that inability to truly like kill him or bring himself to damn him for all time that is yeah sorry it's it's that like sense of like you are the single worst person on Earth but you are my family and I will stand by you until you get better that is something Johnny gets across exceptionally well is the is the inner conflict of trying to be good in awful situations basically yeah um I want to mention something uh it's funny because I'm actually going to the same convention in a couple weeks last year when I was at uh anime Ocean City uh I actually got to meet Johnny Young BOS funny enough oh yeah nice um and I was
1:05:46 one of the few who actually picked a Jonathan poster for him to sign a at least I think I was he he didn't really seem like he he seemed surpris kind of when I picked that one so um but um he basically said he really wants to play Johnny like if if they do if they do steel ball run he really hopes the ask him back to play Johnny that'd be kind of fun yeah it it would make sense and I think he nailed Johnny honestly in a way that he couldn't quite nail Jonathan because first of all Johnny's supposed to be American which means he doesn't have to do any accent work and Johnny is more in line with the kind of like young protagonist characters that he's more familiar
1:06:32 with yeah so I I genuinely would love to see him come back as Johnny so I don't know who they get as Euro or Gyro but you know that would be very interesting pick like it's it's not out of the realm of possibility and it has it has been over it has been almost a decade since the dub first came out mhm like so it is possible they could go with that option like it' be it'd be very ironic honestly but I'm not familiar with steel ball run again I haven't read the Manga basically all you need to know is Johnny jar is like alternate univers Jonathan jonar so he's Jonathan if he
1:07:19 was a prick basically oh so the opposite also horses yeah yeah so the opposite of Jonathan okay now I want to see that now I want to see Johnny BOS as Johnny if if he was skinny blonde and a prick that's Johnny oh damn I love that I like the sound of it already I love the sound steel ball twink steelball twink Hey listen we'll get to it eventually nuts run and the winner of tonight's Zinger is lack and the winner of uh the moment of this episode is lack like thank everybody who believed
1:08:05 in me like all right just take my Oscar and run goodbye like like to say [ __ ] you Academy no anyway uh [ __ ] the Academy Awards yeah woo anyway is there anything else we want to say about um Johnny is Jonathan it's it's fine it it works for what it is and I I I don't mean that as like a backhand ACC compliment I just mean like it's could it have been better maybe but for what it is it works so yeah I think I think part of the detriments to Johnny's performances Jonathan kind of come down to how Phantom blood was like how the story for Phantom blood in the anime
1:08:50 worked out M um and also minor being England but yeah I think it's more the problem of how they adapted Phantom blood and not necessarily with how Johnny portrayed the character yeah also let's be real lack of an accent coach yeah yeah dialect coach would have been very helpful throughout the course of this because again this is probably I guess considering what lack was thinking earlier this might be one of maybe three accents throughout the first season that were kind of yeah it's it's kind of like the Highlander effect honestly I know that's a weird way to put it but like you look
1:09:35 at like Christopher lambar and all the scenes where he has to do a Scottish accent by himself isn't that great but then when he's like next to Sean connory you actually he actually kind of gets it so yeah I know that's a weird PLL it's an odd poll but it makes sense yeah is what yeah is what where I feel like it might bother me if I wasn't you know used to I know for subs or things like that but like I but like I've heard some very weird accents so like most of the ones here hey hey I'll be real I me I believe there was a dialect coach for this show oh but I apologize for that joke I made earlier no no no no no no not for JoJo's the show I'm bringing up there was a dialogue coach for yurian ice I still have no idea what the [ __ ] Chris
1:10:20 Sait was doing oh okay all right you know you know I need to re-watch your ice it's been a while I do too yeah yeah I I bring that up because in our Lord and savior year 2024 I'm coming over there mat but I will find that movie prepare to be shocked everyone I've never watched Yuri on ice so uh shock shock at all yeah all right any other thoughts on Johnny's Jonathan or just Phantom blood in general I'm good it's it's good and I appreciate the the effort they put into it that's what I'll say uh yeah I yeah I really like the way they lead into the 19th century England aesthetic and the way in a way the whole thing kind of out like a s like a stage play really nice touch yeah the the style of how the dub
1:11:08 was done for Phantom blood is great I'm just CU I think a lot of people from my understanding and y'all can correct me if I'm wrong especially lack and Jet because they're more they know more about the JoJo franchise than I do um my understanding is is in terms of the anime Phantom blood is kind of the most contentious because of how it was adapted and it's not know if anything I've seen people pra that wasap because a lot of people don't like Phantom blood that's the thing like not a lot of people like Phantom blood what's interesting about that is from what I I've seen Phantom blood kind of got this Renaissance of appreciation when the anime first came out because like first
1:11:54 of all I'm gonna say another controversial thing I think Stardust Crusaders is the worst part of Jojo H actually I agree with you 100% yeah and and not because I hate it I actually don't hate it but I think narratively it's the most it's the least interesting it it it it gets very repetitive yeah and I think I think uh ventu AIO is a better version of Stardust Crusaders so interesting that that's I think that's part of the reason why I stopped watching starter Crusaders to be honest with you because it kept cycling the same like same stories every single episode and I when when I was trying to Marathon it it's one of those things where it's like okay I'm kind of bored so I can see what you're talking about actually that's why it's got great start and a great end but the middle is just really
1:12:40 spinning its wheel mdle yeah the middle is where the problem is yeah I think I think the other thing is too is that I think a lot of people really [ __ ] on the first two parts of uh these especially fan blow that is is like um at some point way back way way back in the day um a fairly large anti tuber made a video saying that you should skip the first two parts of JoJo's and just go into part three and everybody kind of took that as law and unfortunately there are some people who when they watch anime they don't believe in like you know discovering [ __ ] for themselves organically they believe that they need to follow follow who this the loudest
1:13:26 person in the room is but unfortunately that's a lot of things in life that I digress yeah so but uh pretty much like yeah like no I I genuinely I genuinely like surprisingly liked Phantom blood a lot I kind of wished it was a little longer to flesh some stuff out no that's I that's I think my my biggest complaint but like to to me my favorite part being part four is a slice of Life murder mystery show but it it doesn't spin its Wheels that's what makes it oh yeah no and it has a really good engaging side character cast like like I I'll be real do you want to know what my favorite episode of JoJo's is of all time uh it it's a rest let's go get Italian food let the Italian yeah but also let's go get Italian food is like Peak comedy the Brilliance of that story is the fact
1:14:12 that there's no villain yeah and that like and the the comedy is is that J Juke keeps thinking there's a villain and um and it's not it's just this Guy Stan horrifically mes you as it heals you diarrhea sorry yeah yeah that just sounds like that just sounds like um what's from bungo yeah it's it's basically Dr yoso I would not be surpr I would not be surprised if kfka asag Gary like was mildly inspired by that because I know that off for for anybody who doesn't
