Brief Summary

This YouTube video reviews the first audio drama spin-off series featuring the Fugitive Doctor, played by Jo Martin. The review covers the three episodes of the first box set, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each. Overall, the reviewer finds the series promising, praising Martin's performance and the unique stories, while also pointing out some issues with pacing and narrative focus.

  • Jo Martin shines as the Fugitive Doctor, bringing energy and authority to the role.
  • The series explores the Fugitive Doctor's character and places her in various timelines, creating mystery and excitement.
  • "The Legend of Baba Yaga" is a standout episode, blending fantasy and science fiction elements effectively.

Introduction

The video introduces the Fugitive Doctor, portrayed by Jo Martin, who was revealed in "Fugitive of the Judoon" and discusses Big Finish's new audio drama series that explores her character. The reviewer aims to provide a spoiler-free review of the first box set to help viewers decide if it's worth listening to.

Episode 1: Fast Times

The first episode, "Fast Times," written by Robert Valentine, is described as an action-packed adventure where the Doctor is on the run from the Time Lords, hiding a secret she doesn't remember. Hunted by Head Hunter Cosmon, she finds herself imprisoned in a spaceship prison and must escape. She befriends a prisoner who is running from one of the Doctor's future or past enemies. The episode is tonally different from regular Doctor Who, feeling like a mix of "The Mandalorian" and "The Chase." Jo Martin's performance is praised for her energy and authority, portraying a hardened Doctor who still helps those in need. The episode's location hopping might be difficult for new Big Finish listeners, but seasoned listeners will enjoy the ride. The time-hopping segment in New Mexico is highlighted as a particularly exciting moment.

Episode 2: The Legend of Baba Yaga

Episode two, "The Legend of Baba Yaga," takes place in 17th century Russia, where the Doctor encounters Baba Yaga, a figure from folklore with seemingly limitless powers. The Doctor joins Vissia, who seeks Baba Yaga's help to save her family from the cold. The story explores the nature of Baba Yaga's power and whether it's something the Doctor can understand. The reviewer praises the episode for blending fantasy and science fiction, giving a Doctor Who twist to a folk tale. The fantasy elements, such as Baba Yaga's powers, are explained with a scientific basis within the Doctor Who universe. The reviewer hopes that Rashana Patel, the writer, will contribute to more Fugitive Doctor stories, considering this episode the highlight of the set.

Episode 3: The Dimension of Lost Things

The final story, "The Dimension of Lost Things," sees the Doctor falling into another universe outside of time while on the run from Cosmon. She joins a group of displaced people as they explore a dimension that doesn't make sense. This episode is considered the weakest of the set but contains brilliant ideas, such as the Doctor encountering herself and Sandy Irvine, an explorer who went missing on Everest, and a giant squirrel. The episode suffers from having too many ideas, similar to some issues in Chris Chibnall's era. The concept of Sandy Irvine is compelling but feels wasted due to being bundled with other ideas. The interaction between two versions of the Doctor is less effective in audio format. However, there are incredible moments when the Doctor recounts her dreams, with Martin's performance being electrifying.

Final Thoughts

Despite the final episode ending the box set on a sour note, the reviewer believes there is enough in the set to establish the range as something different and willing to take risks. The reviewer was initially hesitant about the series being set after the Doctor's time with Division but feels that the first box set hints at exploring her mystery. The reviewer expresses a desire for some answers and story progression, drawing a comparison to the Christopher Eccleston audios, which felt aimless. The reviewer praises Jo Martin's performance and expresses excitement for future Fugitive Doctor stories. The reviewer also reflects on the idea that there has never been a bad casting decision for the Doctor, and encourages viewers to share their thoughts on the audio drama.

0:00 Joe man's reveal as the doctor in fugitive of the jadun remains one of the most shocking and exciting moments of Jodi Whitaker's era but who is she does she come before Harel between trouton and pwe or from an entirely unknown part of the doctor's timeline big finish has now given the fugitive doctor her own Audio Drama spin-off series to give a deeper look into her character today we're going to dive into her first boxing completely spoiler-free to help you decide if it's worth your time episode one fast times the doctor is on the run from the time Lords hiding a secret she doesn't even remember she

0:46 is being hunted by a mysterious Head Hunter cosmon she finds herself imprisoned in a maximum security spaceship prison and Must Escape she befriends another prisoner who is on the run from one of the doctor's future enemies or past enemies the doctor doesn't remember Robert Valentine starts this box set off with a bang it's a location hopping action-packed adventure for The Fugitive doctor tonally off the bat it feels so different to a regular run of Doctor Who it feels like a cross between the Mandalorian and Doctor Who's the chase which surprisingly works really well Joe Martin instantly Shines on audio she brings

1:33 such an energy to the performance and has a sense of authority not seen since John pwe it feels like she is in charge even though she's having a complete identity crisis her doctor is hardened but can't help but stop to help those in need even if they're the ones who imprisoned her in the first place her doctor is hated by everyone even her own people and that loneliness and hurt is felt throughout her performance her character from the first episode of the series feels so rich big finisher clearly having fun not placing her doctor in a particular timeline possibly more fun than Chris chel had with it at moments you're thinking oh she's definitely preh haral and then other

2:19 moments you're thinking oh no she's definitely between the second and third doctors and for the first time ever I started to think maybe she's an incarnation in the distant future I actually was invested in that part of her mystery for the first time ever whereas in the past I just enjoyed her performance and not so much her Origins I think for new big finish listeners this episode might be really difficult to follow along with due to the amount of location hopping you really have to pay attention to what is going on to fully understand where you are and when but to those who are seasoned at this you'll love the ride the time hopping segment in New Mexico is one of the most exciting thrilling and a little bit

3:05 funny moments I've experienced from a big finish audio in a while it's really something special and I can't believe that it hasn't happened yet I do feel like this episode is really the only way you can start off a box set like this or even a range like this introducing Joey Martin's tough and smart talking yet lonely and lost doctor in a high action guns blazing time hopping Adventure feels like the correct decision yet it seems like a precursor of what's to come in the third episode but more on that later because the standout of this set is a story that avoids action almost all together episode 2 The Legend of Baba

3:52 Yaga the doctor finds herself in Russia in the 17th century and encounters the Baba Yaga a being who was supposed to be folklore as some sort of powerful witch her powers seem impossible and Limitless and the doctor is frightened the doctor joins vissia who wants the Baba yaga's help to create fire to save her family from the cold winter and gets more than what she's bargained for who really is the Baba Yaga and where does her power come from or is she something the doctor doesn't understand I think Doctor Who always shines when it explores stories from long ago and gives it a doctor who twist

4:39 it's the same reason why making a shop dummy come to life is so effective it's something that we're familiar with and asking how would that work in the Doctor Who Universe Rashana Patel takes this folk claw tale of babayaga and makes it work within the Doctor Who Universe I think one of the things that I enjoyed most about the story which surprised me was the fantasy elements you have Baba Yaga who was a witch who has incredible Powers she can make it so no fire can be lit throughout the forest she can unlock the tardus doors and enter when no one else can she feels Unstoppable you can't help but make parallels to the new series Celestial toy maker and the Maestro two Gods who have Unthinkable

5:27 power with no restraints the part I prefer with Baba Yaga over those two Gods is that her power may seem magical and unknowing but it does have a scientific explanation it ties in within the rules of the Doctor Who Universe you can have your fun with fantasy and Magic but still make it make sense within the limitation of Doctor Who's rules you can have your cake and eat it too and I just wish that Russell two Davies had this approach with his new step into fantasy for me I think that Doctor Who from a storytelling standpoint was already Limitless you can tell almost any story in any genre because the rules of the show are actually quite simple you can

6:14 go anywhere and any when forwards backwards and sideways you can get away with these pretty simple get out of jail free cards with this show all this happened because we stumbled into another reality another dimension or the tus is fast return switch malfunction and that's why everyone is crazy all of a sudden it doesn't have to be the most deep and complicated explanation as to why the story has stretched into fantasy but it helps ties it in with the show it's clear that Patel enjoys writing these Fantastical Magical elements just as much as the science fiction elements both sides of the coin shines and makes the whole piece work the science fiction

7:00 explanation enhances the story not detracts from the magic I really hope Patel is invited to write for more fugitive doctor stories because this to me was the highlight of the set it's worth buying just for this story episode three the dimension of lost things the doctor on the run from cosmon falls into another Universe outside of time a dimension of lost things things she is joined by a group of displaced people from across the universe as they explore a dimension that doesn't make sense the final story in this box set the dimension of lost things is possibly

7:45 the weakest of the bunch but within it it contains many brilliant ideas the doctor encountering herself Sandy vvin a real life explorer who went missing on Everest and the most exciting idea a giant squirrel which annoys me because it's an audio Venture so I can't see the squirrel show me the squirrel this story suffers from one part of Chris's era that I disliked the most having too many ideas for one story the story of Sandy vvin the Everest Explorer is such a rich idea that is begging for a doctor who twist but since it's bundled in with so many other ideas it feels like the concept is wasted Maybe maybe this episode is the most inspired by its

8:32 original era I'm sure there are many people out there who enjoy this way of Storytelling for do who I think it's the fact that I personally prefer smaller stories that are more focused and perhaps that's a style that's out of date it's just not in Vogue anymore and maybe I'm just the dinosaur hanging around this story has two versions of the same doctor interacting which is a Trope used throughout all of Doctor Who's history but I think it works better on screen because you can differentiate the pair with an audio drama is a lot harder the second doctor disappears at a certain point in the story but I have absolutely no idea when that happened because it was just so confusing to tell when she was in the

9:18 scene and when she wasn't It suffers due to the audio format it feels like a story not written for its medium but there are some incredible moments when the doctor recounts her dreams unsure if they're memories Martin's performance is electrifying and intense when she yells I see you but I do not fear you it's so chilling it's unfortunate that this episode ends this box set on such a sour note but two out of three isn't bad I think there is enough in this box set that sets up the range as something completely different to what the show has done before and isn't afraid of telling stories that are riskier to pull off it's exciting even

10:04 if it doesn't always succeed when forever ago when this set was first announced I was quite hesitant it was stated that it would be set after her time with division and I just felt like these type of stories would end up feeling just like regular old Doctor Who and don't get me wrong I love regular old Doctor Who but the doctor working for division is something that wasn't explored too deeply in the show and feels ripe for exploration I felt like setting it after the division made it feel like it wasn't going to explore Joy's doctor that deeply but this first box set gave us a hint at exploring her mystery but how long can we go without any answers until it becomes frustrating

10:50 I don't want all the answers don't get me wrong because it'll destroy the mystery but I would like some hints I want to feel a story progression it's the same reason I never really enjoyed any of the Christopher erson audios because it just felt aimless he isn't traveling with a consistent companion there isn't an overarching story it just feels like a bunch of random unconnected adventures with storylines that just don't really excite me I like purpose in the new series audios which is why I enjoyed David tenant's dalic Universe it felt like another season of his doctor but going back to Joe Martin you can't talk about a female doctor without David Tenant getting the way years ago I saw

11:38 someone post that their favorite doctor of all time was John Hurt he's barely in the show and he's your favorite I never understood it even though I love John Hurt he's an incredible performer and one of my favorite films of all time is The Elephant Man and he's incredible in it and he's so brilliant as the War Doctor but but to say he's the best doctor ever that just seems really weird to me but after watching fugitive of the jadun for the first time I instantly felt a connection with Martin's doctor that I was missing from Jody Whitaker's don't get me wrong I love jod Whitaker's doctor and I love what she did with the role but Martin's tougher and non-nonsense approach is something that

12:25 I have a preference for with the doctor it's why love harnel Pertwee Colin Baker and kalii so much I feel like I have faith that they would get me out of any situation and be in complete control and I feel like that with Joe Martin even in her appearance in once and Futures koder she was electric she just brings a certain something it just really reinforced that the old idea that there has never been a bad C into decision for the doctor is just true they're just all incredible in their own way personally I can't wait to see what stories The Fugitive doctor Encounters in the future even if my bank account is terrified at the prospect of it but what did you

13:11 think Have you listened to it yet have you ever listened to a big finish audio before maybe this is your jumping on point let me know in the comments section below fugitive of the jadun my God I sound even more Australian don't forget to click below to subscribe to the official Josh Nez YouTube channel he
