How to Actually Heal From Burnout: A Japanese Perspective

Brief Summary

This video addresses burnout from a Japanese perspective, offering a simple yet effective tool for those experiencing, recovering from, or on the verge of burnout. It identifies the root causes of burnout, often linked to work-related stress and the pursuit of external validation, and introduces practical steps to regain authenticity and inner peace. The key takeaways include:

  • Taking care of your living space to foster self-love and compassion.
  • Letting go of the need for external validation and approval.
  • Cultivating the ability to ask for help and support when needed.

Introduction to Burnout

The video begins by acknowledging the increasing prevalence of burnout and the numerous requests for solutions. Traditional methods like therapy, mindfulness, and rest are helpful, but the speaker introduces a Japanese perspective offering a potentially more effective and long-term solution. This tool is designed for individuals currently experiencing burnout, those who have experienced it in the past, or those who feel they are nearing burnout.

Causes of Burnout

The primary causes of burnout often stem from work-related stress, whether in a corporate environment or self-employment. The modern digital world, while offering opportunities for business and connection, also increases the risk of burnout. A significant factor is the pursuit of external approval and validation, coupled with the fear of not receiving it or being punished. This external motivation contrasts with a focus on one's inner world and authenticity.

The Flower Analogy and Authenticity

The speaker shares a personal experience of feeling pressured to meet public expectations in creative work, which led to a loss of authenticity. Drawing an analogy to flowers that blossom naturally without seeking praise, the speaker emphasizes the importance of creating from authentic inspiration. This shift reduced pressure and allowed for a more natural and sustainable creative process.

Creating Flow Through Environment

To combat burnout, the speaker advises creating flow in both internal and external environments, starting with the daily living space. Taking care of one's immediate surroundings, such as keeping the kitchen and table clear, is presented as an act of self-care. Consciously maintaining a comfortable living environment, including using items usually reserved for guests, fosters self-love and compassion.

Inner World and Immediate Environment

The speaker underscores the importance of balancing inner reflection with tangible actions in the immediate environment. This involves not only meditation to create inner space but also actively making the living space comfortable. This approach helps rewire neural pathways and inner dialogue, especially in the context of social media and the pursuit of likes and validation.

Letting Go and Embracing Authenticity

The video stresses the importance of letting go of the desire for approval, praise, and validation to achieve freedom and create a new life path. This isn't about selfishness but about becoming more compassionate by living authentically. Authenticity enables individuals to say no and let go of unnecessary burdens, fostering genuine connections with coworkers, bosses, and clients.

Seeking Help and Support

The speaker highlights the significance of being able to ask for help, even though it can be challenging due to societal conditioning that emphasizes independence. Recognizing the need for support and seeking it is portrayed as a strength rather than a weakness. This mindset reduces anxiety and fear, enabling individuals to navigate difficulties more effectively. Collaboration is presented as a natural and essential aspect of human interaction.

Tools for Combating Burnout

The tools shared in the video include taking care of the inner world and immediate living space, letting go of the need for validation and approval, and cultivating the ability to seek help and support. The speaker emphasizes that the value of life lies in simply being alive, not in achieving external goals. Building a network of trustworthy friends and colleagues, referred to as "nakama" in Japanese, is crucial for mutual support.

Reaching Out for Help

The video concludes with an invitation for viewers experiencing or nearing burnout to reach out for one-on-one support, with details provided in the description.

0:00 Burnout. It seems more and more people are suffering from burnout. I also receive many requests from people who are looking for solution for burnout. And when people have burnout, usually they go to the therapist and psychotherapist maybe do mindfulness practices that such as yoga meditations which all will be helpful and they will rest as well. So resting is important and all these practices that you might do will be of course helpful but there will be also something else which can be really effective and it can be really a longtime solution. So I'm going to share

0:47 it's from Japanese perspective and this method and it's it's going to be a tool and that's if you have ever had burnout or if you're going through this burnout or if you feel you are on the verge of this burnout. So it's a simple tool that I'm going to share. First of all, the cause of the burnout is often from work or even dealing with some kind of stressful social environment. So for example working in a corporate world and also starting your own business or if you have your own business and working too much or you also have like you your own business for digital creations and

1:36 family circumstances. So there are many many different situations but I think mostly from the working in the corporate environment or working for yourself. So more work related and also recent times in this digital modern world we have more opportunity to develop business. we have more opportunity to connect with people around the world. But also there are more risks that we can really get burned out from that. So one of the cause of burnout is often seeking approval, seeking validations and of course the

2:23 fear of not receiving them or fear of being punished. The motivation often is external world and not sit in ourselves our inner world. For example, I also experienced for myself especially in my creative this entire year actually I devoted myself to write and I dedicated to writing. In this process I also monitored and also observed how my mind would react. And there are certain moments that I also felt I also pressured myself okay what the public might see what the public might say and then of course when

3:12 we create something we it should be something helpful it should be something to be useful. However, if we really too much focus on external result, then automatically it start feeding more pressures and reducing our own authenticity. That's what I really really experienced myself. Then at one stage I was just looking at outside the flower. So flowers beautiful but it just comes itself and they are not seeking to be praised. to be said beautiful or maybe some flowers herble or even herbs they have some healing effect. However, they just

4:02 blossom as they are. So when also myself start creating from my own authentic uh inspirations and what I want to share with the world like to be like the flower. It really instantly reduced this pressure and I was able to it it was like the the river the water going through the river. So it went really more natural and I was able to work even longer hours but without much stress or pressure. And so one of the exercise is to let go really let go of this validation and approval and

4:51 praise seeking which is very difficult but how can we do that? So what I realized and also following the Japanese life philosophy, it's about really creating the flow in our internal and also external work. The easiest thing that we can start doing is to take care of our daily living space. It sounds like why it's related to burnout. But when we started even just taking care of the kitchen top make it clear and table clear after you do some work or after eating really when we are really busy

5:39 and we forget and we actually cannot invest or allocate time to do such a thing and then it gets really worse and worse then it's neglecting ourselves. So really to take care of ourselves and of course taking care of ourself is like our hygiene and our clothes etc. But also the space we are in. And when we start taking care of really consciously start taking care of our living environment every single day even letting the air in and then focusing not for the guest but for yourself for ourselves and then start a beautiful

6:28 feeling of self-love and compassion start emerging inside also like the cups the plates that you use. You might keep for example you might have beautiful sets of cutlery or the the plates for guest but start using this one for ourselves. And if you're using some uh it's not about throwing things away that you don't want, but really treat yourself, treat yourself every single day with something that you might do it to others. So bring your attentions not to out outside but your inner world, how

7:15 you would feel, how you feel, how you actually relate to things around. So then of course meditation is important to create your space your own inner space but also to really do action to take care of your immediate living environment and to make it comfortable and so not just focusing on inner world but immediate environment and that would really help and because It's not just the external thing but it will also help to rewire your neurons and your information processing system and your

8:02 inner chat often. For example, these day I think most people are doing social media and also maybe you are posting many things and you might also check how many likes you have and maybe if this works or not. So then really taking care of ourselves which is really important and maybe your therapist might also have said that as well and it is actually really kind of common sense. But then in order to let go of this approval, let go of this uh desire to be praised and desire to be validated. And when you let go of these things, it's really free and

8:50 you really feel free and then it becomes the you can create the entire new path of your life and it's not just being selfish. It's not just pleasing. you can become more compassionate because when we start living more authentic to who you are and then to be able to say no and to be able to to let go of what you don't really need, then you become authentic and you can actually um relate to people more from your heart. and also with your co-workers,

9:38 with your boss, your client. So then you will be able to say help when things are not going well or when you are really in trouble. So then when you can say yes I cannot do this and please help me which is really difficult things to say to help please help me because we are brought up to be independent and or to be able to do things by ourselves. So we do make most effort. I do myself as well. And sometimes sometimes when we are brought up in that way, it is very

10:24 difficult to notice that we are actually overstretched and then forget that we are in a trouble. So then it is really important. It's not just about giving up and it's not about being weak to be able to say yes please help me. So to be able to say yes please help me and please support me I need support also when we start something new then when you know you can say yes please help me and or to seek support and help then anxiety and the fear can be reduced. So when we recognize that saying seeking support

11:10 and seeking help it's not the weakness it's actually the strength then when we have that then really you will be able to deal with any difficulties and also this world is made to collaborate and so if somebody comes to you to help and of course if somebody asking you for help then it's also connect you feel I would like to help you and so it is mutual and it's also connect human relationship so the tools that here I shared is really to to take care of your inner world but also your living space immediate living

11:58 space to make it comfortable to make it to the for the air to flow And also let go. So let go of validation. Approval. Let go of desire to get approval. Validation and appraisal. Our life. The value of our life is being alive every day. It's not something that we have to achieve. Just being on this earth is really our value. So let go of these desires. And then lastly to be able to gain and also to create this mindset to be able to say when we are in trouble. Yes, please help

12:46 me or uh to seek support. So in order to do so then we need today also it is important to be able to we don't need many many many friends but friends colleagues and in Japanese we say nakama who can really we can actually trust and to support each other which is really important. If you are watching this video and if if you are in the middle of burnout or in a recovery process or uh if you feel you are on the verge of having burnout, please reach me out. I'll be very happy to help uh on oneonone basis. So the

13:31 information and the details is in the description. Thank you for watching.
