00 [Music] welcome i born today's lesson we're going to do about idiomatic expressions now this lesson is going to focus on vocabulary okay so the previous lessons were about grammar and this one is now going to focus on vocab or we call it vocabulary another word could be even lexis right so we're going to start with idiomatic expressions because it's quite general and you need to know idiomatic expressions when it comes to your

46 speaking part in the aisles it's actually also integrated into your marking criteria so it's important that you learn some of the idiomatic expressions you don't need to learn or there are so many idiomatic expressions right but if you learn at least a few it would be quite useful for you other [Music]

09 idiomatic expressions right so let us have a look at some of the expressions right they are not all the idiomatic um expressions these are just a few of it right we could later have a look at more idiomatic expressions once you learn a few of these get the message get the message what does that mean okay we'll have a look at each of these right but for now just let's have a look at it very quickly get the message is to understand something

54 green thumb is that you are able to grow a lot of plants money to burn is basically you have a lot of money you have more than what you want take it easy don't be stressed in the dog house is you're in a situation when someone is really angry out of circulation no more in use hit the jackpot is to win a big amount of money eat like a horse it's a lot okay curiosity kill the cat okay he says curiosity kills the cat okay

40 it means that when you're too inquisitive it's a problem in the grass means a very dangerous very um not a very good person okay don't be a chicken don't be afraid let sleeping dogs lie you know keep it as it is pop the question you can ask something number one always the winner monkey business you know you're doing little things under the hand we don't know actually what you're doing 24 7 always lucky dog means you're a lucky person always dead to the world means the people think that you're not there they don't really know what you're doing

26 but you really are in existence puppy love is that you know we say oh that's a puppy love you know when you're really young you fall in love or you love someone but it's not really serious okay flat broke means you've got no money at all we'll have a look at these more in detail when i'm doing one by one right but these are the ones that i'm going to cover then get the message

12 green thumb monk sorry money to burn take it easy in the dog house out of circulation hit the jackpot eat like a horse curiosity killed the cat or a peter kiana pulong cubrio city kills the cat owner with attackers snake in the grass don't be chicken let sleeping dogs lie pop the question number one

00 monkey business 24 7. dog dead to the world puppy love flat broke right then get the message what do we mean by that someone is trying to tell you something they are not actually putting across what they want to tell right but you say oh do you get the message that means do you understand so maybe someone has a difficulty in expressing it properly right but we ask them how do you get the message do you

46 get what the other person was trying to tell you do you get what they were expressing or what they were talking about okay so this we use in a very casual manner did you get the message doesn't mean or did you get the text message no that is not what we mean we mean by this someone was trying to explain something to you right but maybe it wasn't that clear but we want to make sure that you understood what the other person was telling you get the message okay this is not like a text message

35 did you get the message right get the message again get the message okay next one green thumb green thumb can go apart right it doesn't mean you have a green color thumb okay it means that you have a good hand and you can grow plants well or you have a green thumb means you can grow plants well you have a natural talent to do gardening and growing when we want to express to someone that you have a natural talent to grow plants

22 or vegetables or maybe flowers right we say you have a green thumb it doesn't mean that your thumb is green okay so idioms don't necessarily mean by word by word as we mean in the normal language idioms means it has a different meaning okay as i told you before green thumb [Music]

19 hit the jackpot right what do we mean by hit the jackpot as you can see here the man has got 777 and that's when you hit the jackpot that's when you get the biggest gift or the biggest achievement okay when you achieve or when you get something big a lot of money or you know you get your dream job you say oh you hit the jackpot okay means you got something with a lot of money a lot of value okay so here is hit the jackpot and he's very happy so when you hit the jackpot you're happy you've got what you wanted okay

04 so right next one let sleeping dogs lie it doesn't mean to let this little doggie like you sleeping let him sleep there no okay it means let the problem

49 be don't go and interfere with the problem because you might just make it worse so let the problem be as it is do not get involved in the problem okay what let the sleeping dogs like yell again speaking

54 okay so it means don't get involved in that problem leave it and stay aside from that problem money to burn money to burn means you have a lot of money that means you have more money than you need and you can just spend it on different things you don't need it for a good purpose you just spend it on going out on shopping on traveling okay just you're spending money as you want you don't have a control over it when you have excess money and when people are just spending it right you say oh they have money to burn it doesn't mean that you're burning the

40 money physically you're not burning it like this

33 right next one puppy love okay it doesn't mean that you love a puppy it means when you're at a very young age when you start to fall in love right you don't really have a lot of things you know you just want to go out and talk or you want to message or you know call each other so we call that kind of love we call it a puppy love right um

47 next one take it easy right so this is a very commonly used phrase right where we say oh just take it easy take it easy means don't stress don't take too much pressure to yourself right do your work but be calm and neutral don't run around don't you know shout and be angry and you know hypered just be calm and chill like this little frog okay so um

52 right next one 24 7 this again is a very useful idiom okay or she works 24 7. okay when you say 24 7 when someone is doing something always every time okay it could be any time of the day okay so um she's doing it at one o'clock two o'clock three o'clock so what we want to mean is that or she's working 24 7. it doesn't mean the person is working 24 hours into seven days every day of the week that's what we mean can someone work like that literally no but what we

39 mean is that person is working a lot when that person is doing something a lot more than the required amount we say other person is working 24 7. like i always tell my friends who are doctors or you're working 24 7 because whenever i call my friend she's in the hospital okay so she's working on saturdays she's working on sunday she's there at eight o'clock in the morning she's there at four o'clock in the morning she's also there at 12 o'clock at the midnight right so whenever i call her she's like ah i'm at the hospital can i call you back later so when someone is working we feel that they're there always every time of the day seven days a week

24 24 hours we have for a day seven days a week so it means every day it's like 365 days you're doing something okay so it means when someone is really busy or when someone is doing a lot of work okay 24 7 then

41 right next one in the dog house now that is a bit scary okay so this is when someone is really angry at you okay so say that it could be your husband or your girlfriend or your boyfriend or your best friend right you have forgotten their birthday and they're really angry with you right um someone would tell me oh my god you're in the dog house okay because someone is really angry and they're going to scold you right it doesn't mean that you are inside a dog house that is not the meaning okay the meaning is that someone is really angry at you and they're going to you know scold you

27 and really angry at you in the dog house

16 so when you want to say that when you want to bring out that someone is really angry with you and you're going to get you know scolded or we call it even guarded in you know speaking language right um that means okay in the doghouse in the dog kiera right next one out of circulation out of circulation means you no longer use it ah that those type of money or those type of coins it's out of circulation it means we don't use it anymore okay usually comes along with policies or

02 coins or notes you know you use it in economics a lot okay right it means it's no longer there it's never going to come back it's completely out of use so lucky dog ha it doesn't mean that the doggy is lucky okay it means that you are a very lucky and fortunate person

47 okay now some people you know if they go for a job interview they get it okay um if they dream to marry someone they marry that person so we say oh you're a really lucky dog it means you are a very fortunate person you get whatever you want okay so we say ah lucky dog it means that you are a very lucky and fortunate person right now

52 next one number one right number one means you're always first that means whatever you do you are the first okay you always get that desired first place right um sometimes you say oh he's my number one okay um he's my first number one hamathi eat like a horse right it means that you

38 eat a lot okay and it doesn't mean the way that the horse is literally eating but it means that you're eating and eating and eating you eat a lot so if you say if you tell someone or you're eating like a horse it means that you're eating a lot okay that is a phrase we use eat like a horse pop the question okay what do you mean by pop the question color

24 that's not what we mean we're not saying that you know pop like popcorn no pop the question means ask the question don't be afraid just ask the question okay so usually when you want to ask someone oh do you love me do you want to marry me we say oh why don't you pop the question why don't you just ask the question you have it in your mind but you don't want to express it when you don't want to express it but you have it in your mind we tell the other person why don't you just pop the question it doesn't mean that it makes the sound pop no it means to ask okay now you pop the question

30 right so idiomatic expressions are usually used in informal in the informal context so therefore it could be used in a situation where you want to express your opinion or your ideas or your feelings right so it means ask the question don't keep it in your mind so pop the questions next one don't be chicken okay it doesn't mean like your chicken it means don't be afraid we say oh don't be like a chicken don't be afraid okay just go

18 and do it or you know just go and ask don't be afraid rapid don't be a chicken um chicken cane snake in the grass now snakes are not seen usually when they're in the grass okay so this is like when you have friends and people around you very vicious people okay they're good to you but

04 actually they're not good people they harm you or they tell things about you they backstab you okay so we say oh she's like a snake in the grass okay she's there she shows that she's good with you but actually she's not very good she's vicious okay so people like that we say snake in the grass it doesn't mean that you know she's a snake it means that they're like a snake they're fear in the grass they can't be seen because their true characteristics cannot be seen right happy

22 curiosity kills the cat okay so it doesn't mean you're killing the cat it literally means that your inquisitiveness okay or because you want to find out more details about something you get into trouble okay so curiosity kills the catch um curiosity kills the cat dead to the world right

23 it means that you are absolutely of no use right you are in existence but it means or it looks like you're absolutely not there because you're not doing anything useful or productive so those kind of people we say dead to the world monkey business okay monkey business means when you're just doing things underhand you're not open about what you're doing right you're doing underhand work so we say oh that's like monkey business okay um so it means when you're a little mischievous as well we can say are you doing the monkey business okay so you're not open you mischievous um you're not honest about it we say monkey business

09 right monkey business clinic

57 flat broke so this is our last idiom for the lesson flat broke means you have nothing you're penniless no money at all okay flat flat broke today means you have no money so with that we come to the end of the lesson of idioms which is a vocabulary lesson and which is of use for you for your speaking uh when it comes to the ilts exam

44 other epic idiomatic expressions speaking this brings us to the end of the lesson which was all about idiomatic expressions [Music] you
