Nigerians Moving to Alberta? Don’t Come Without This

Brief Summary

Taiwo Odumosu addresses fellow immigrants, particularly those in Ontario, who are considering a move to Alberta. He emphasizes the importance of transferable skills and certifications in Alberta's industrial province, highlighting the differences between Alberta and Ontario. He also touches on the cost of living, regional opportunities beyond major cities, and the unique work-life balance offered by many Alberta jobs.

  • Alberta is an industrial province where transferable skills are highly valued.
  • Certifications are more important than degrees in many Alberta industries.
  • The cost of living, especially housing and gas, is generally lower in Alberta compared to Ontario.
  • Opportunities exist in smaller cities and rural areas, sometimes with additional cost of living allowances.
  • Be prepared for long and cold winters.

Introduction

Taiwo introduces himself as someone working in the trading industry in Alberta. He explains that he started his YouTube channel to share his experiences as an immigrant in the trade industry, a perspective often missing on YouTube. He aims to inform and guide those planning to move to Alberta, highlighting the province's unique industrial nature and policies compared to Ontario.

Transferable Skills

Taiwo advises that the most important thing for anyone planning to move to Alberta is to acquire a transferable skill. Alberta is an industrial province with a strong oil and gas sector, but also opportunities in warehousing, healthcare, and agriculture. Skills such as mechanics, forklift operation, or truck driving are highly valued. He emphasizes that Alberta offers growth opportunities within companies, allowing individuals to advance from entry-level positions. Even if you don't have a skill, try to learn it as soon as possible.

Importance of Certification

Taiwo's second piece of advice is to obtain certifications. Alberta values certifications over degrees, and many job postings on platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn prioritize certifications such as Red Seal Journeyman. Any certification is better than none, whether it's for forklift operation, truck driving, or a specific trade. Getting certified, even in Ontario, can significantly improve job prospects in Alberta.

Cost of Living and Regional Opportunities

Alberta is cheaper than Ontario, with no PST. Housing is more affordable, but Taiwo advises people to consider cities beyond Calgary and Edmonton. Rural areas offer opportunities and sometimes include a cost of living allowance or northern allowance, which can add extra income to your paycheck. He mentions cities like Grande Prairie, Red Deer, and Fort McMurray as alternatives. Many jobs in Alberta, especially in heavy industry, offer shift work, such as 14 days on and 14 days off, providing a unique work-life balance.

Vehicle and Winter Preparation

Having a personal vehicle is essential in Alberta due to the limited public transportation, especially in smaller communities. Cars are relatively cheap. It's also crucial to prepare for the long and harsh winters, which can last from November to May, with temperatures dropping to -50°C to -55°C.

Housing and Community Support

Taiwo advises against living in basements, as housing is affordable, with two-bedroom apartments renting for around $1,200 to $1,300. The cost of living is generally lower than in Ontario, including gas prices. Alberta has a strong sense of community, with numerous Nigerian, African, and Jamaican associations, providing support and social activities.

Job Opportunities and Integration

There are many job opportunities in Alberta, and having Ontario experience can be an advantage. However, skills and certifications are key to securing well-paying jobs. Community support is abundant, with various cultural associations hosting events and activities.

Conclusion

Taiwo concludes by reiterating that the cost of living is cheap and welcomes people to Alberta. He encourages viewers to leave comments or send DMs on Instagram with any questions.

0:01 Hi guys, how's it going today? My name is Taiw and welcome back to my YouTube channel. If this is your first time seeing me on your screen, don't forget to click on the like and the subscribe button. Seriously, it been a very long time I make videos at work. So today I just said to myself, let me just do a short video, you know, because uh a lot of my fellow immigrants um do message me asking me about life now. But uh especially from Ontario, people want to come to Avatar from Ontario uh you know maybe you know to change their environment because life in Ontario is now getting expensive especially from Toronto from branding. I do receive lot of messages from uh you know people for my fellow immigrants you know my uh fellow Nigerians in Ontario like hey

0:48 please how is Alvata we want to move is he better blah blah blah and all that so you can DM me on Instagram I do reply to every DM don't just say hi to me so DM me like drop your message I'll definitely read your messages and I'll reply so now let me introduce myself if you are seeing me for the first time my name is Tyu and uh I'm in the trading industry here in Alpata. So because I decide to make videos about my life in the trade industry because uh you know if you check on YouTube you hardly find uh people talking about life in the trade industry especially an immigrant you know talking about life in the trade industry. So I just decided okay let me just make start this YouTube channel you know just to tell you know to tell people just to show people uh how life

1:34 is as an immigrant working in the trade industry here in Atlanta. So if your plan is to come to Albata anytime soon, I'm going to tell you Alberta is an industry province. So it's different from Ontario. Everything about Alberta is different from Ontario, including their policies. In Alberta, they are conservative. So in Ontario is they liberal. So everything about Albata is different from Ontario. So now if you plan to come anytime soon, my first advice I will recommend I like my first the first thing I advise you to do is try to get a transferable skill. It is very very important especially if you're coming to Alata whereby is an industrial province like lot of oil and gas. So me

2:21 see as you're looking at me I'm working in the oil and gas industry here in Albata. You can see so now this is air compressor here. So I'm I'm working in an oil in the oil and gas industry. So now I'm working with uh I don't want to mess something. So I'm working in the oil and gas industry. So now uh and um so we have oil and gas industry. We have warehouse, we have um no healthcare uh industry here. So now we have agricultural industry and some other like is industrialized uh industry province. to come with a transferable skill. Transferable skill like uh maybe like uh a mechanic like um maybe a forklift operator. I started as a forklift operator and that is one thing

3:08 about Albata is that there's always an opportunity to grow with most uh company. So any company hire you they will you know you you'll be able to grow with them especially in the trade industry you can become whatever you want to become in the trade. I started small and later later on I you know I got promoted to where I am today. So Albata is an industrial province. So come with a transferable skill. Um what's it called? A technician, forklift operator, truck driver you know like any skill that you think that is okay you know to survive in Alvata in an industrial province. anyone so now you can survive uh and even if you don't have the skill try to learn it as soon

3:54 as possible as soon as possible even driving skills ste like we call it ski so now is okay any equipment you will be able to see our pays well they will pay you top dollar if you have a skill if anyone is struggling in this province it means that person doesn't have a skill see on our is not like like Ontario whereby there are lot of office job in here not we don't really have much office position available if you check on indeed go to indeed right now and put in our you see that it is technician technician technician mechanic skills skills skills that is what you'll be seeing there red seal journeyman you know like so you know that this province that will tell you the kind of provin

4:39 truck drivers you know drivers and all that so now this will tell you like okay uh this this this province I'm going to you need a skill. So now it is very very they will pay you top dollars if you have a skill. Just put that one as number one that get a transferable skill or like just get it. You can learn it in Ontario or maybe as soon as you get here you know try to get a transferable skill. It is very very very important. So before most company will train you but right now it is better for you to learn it so that even if you want to get trained they will only show you the advanced way not from the basic no company don't most company here they don't when I got here a few a few years

5:26 back I don't know anything I don't even have the experience so I got trained so my first company they hired me and the training but right now most company will not want to train you so they will want someone that have the experience Even you don't need to have all the experience but at least the basic experience the certification. So Albata yeah this would take me to my second uh uh you know uh advice. So now my second recommendation is get a certification. Albata valued certification they see they don't care about your degree. One thing about see check on indeed check on uh LinkedIn check all these job board you will see that they will not tell you like their jobs most job here they will not even ask you for your degree because

6:12 people don't even have it here in this life most people don't have it so now most people from high school to trade work to get their certification so get certified see any certification is better than no no certification at all no certificate at all So get certified as soon as possible. It is very very important for you if you can get certified to know get something even you can get it in Ontario or as soon as you arrive try as much as possible to get a certification your ticket even maybe it's forklift ticket truck driver ticket you know ski ticket zoom boom ticket anyone a technician ticket maybe journeyman or red sea anyone it is better if you have one than to have none

6:58 at all and another thing I'll advise is that this province uh you know like it's cheap compared to Ontario like there's nothing like PST here. So Abata is cheap compared to Ontario and all that. So especially Toronto or Bmpton or some all those cities. So now if you're coming here um you know because it is the the housing is cheap. Yeah the housing is cheap too but again Albata doesn't end in Cry and Edmonton. See there are so many other cities. A lot of people made that mistake like okay because my friend is in Calgary my brother is in Edmonton they themselves they want to like go to Edmonton or you know like okay let me go there's nothing bad there if you have your family in Edmonton or you know it's always better if you you know stay close

7:45 to your family or your friend and all but Albata doesn't end in Cry and Edmonton there are so many nice city rural environment like like me now I'm I like I live in a rural part of our B. So I'm telling you they will pay you top dollars. Top dollars if you leave if you stay in the rural like there's this money that we earn is part of our paycheck. It's an extra dollar. So because I'm living in the rural part of our B the government is paying us is paying like like but it's not all companies. So don't I'm not generalizing this thing but the company I'm working for with some other big big companies here in Albata. So there's this money that they will pay you. We call it the cost of living allowance or northern

8:31 allowance. So now this money will be added to your salary. So now so for me now they paying me 1,600 extra additional 1,600 apart from my paycheck. So that one is you know like because you are living here because people don't don't want to live in the northern part of Albata. So the government pays this uh set of money you know for anyone living here. So there are so many other city we have granny perry we have red there so we have le bridge you so we have format mormorial so that we have so lacabishi we have uh so many other cities that you can leave life doesn't end start and end in Edmonton or Calgary I'm not saying I love Edmonton I love Calgary but you can al always go there

9:18 on vacation so if you are this person that love big city fine yeah you know you can go to big city But for some of us like we love quiet life like there's nothing bad there and weekend you can go to uh Edmonton we can go to Cry for the weekend and all and also most job here in Alberta it we call it shift work if you're working in the heavy duty industry like I do. So now you you know you are what's it called? You don't have to go to work every day. So some they will tell you you have to come to work for 14 days on and off. So for the next 14 days you'll be off. Just look at this. You cannot get this kind of a job, that kind of lifestyle in Ontario. So like for me now, if I go to work for 14 days, I'll be off for 14 days. That means in a year I only go to work for 5

10:05 months. So in 365 days, I only work for 5 months and they pay me $12. Like you earn for everything for the whole 365. They'll pay you for the old 365 days for the whole year. But I only go to work for five months. So the next six months is my PTO. So I'll be off for one month. So now as a PTO so I got paid for that whole month also. And um another thing I'll tell you if you're coming here is that get a vehicle like it is this is not Ontario. The transportation is cheap here. So have a car have your own personal car. So cars are very cheap here. So like you can still see one of $2,000 $3,000 4,000 depending even $1,000 car day. So if you want all these batter cars and

10:51 all that. So have your own personal car it is very very important our batter especially during the winter period. So during the green even there are some communities whereby there's no boss at all like no boss. So now but if you plan to to survive here you need your own personal car. It is very very very important. Another advice if you're coming to our tiny time soon is that prepare for the winter. Prepare for the winter period. We have longer winter here in this part of the world. Longer winter. See our winter starts immediately after Halloween. Immediately after Halloween, the next day after Halloween period, prepare for the snow. Prepare for the first snow in

11:36 the year. So that means around November and it will end about March. Yeah. Of the next year. So at least March or April or even May. What am I even saying? May we are still seeing snow in this part of the world. May. So from November to May that is our winter here. Especially this part of Al that I am. So it is always cold and it get cold to like aboutus 50° - 55 you know in real field. So prepare for the winter. If you don't like cold then don't come like don't don't even bother yourself to come to our time. So it's get cold here and uh you know you have to prepare for it. So now you have to prepare for it and also housing also I would not advise you

12:23 to live in the basement. Housing is very very cheap here. So to rent a two-bedroom flat two-bedroom apartment at least 1,200 1,300 you know and that is it. So in Ontario maybe they're looking for basement here people don't really rent basement and maybe in the big city like Edmonington Cadbury maybe but instead of staying in the basement and also most basements here they are fully furnished and they are new like new buildings so might not even be cold but people don't really like living in basement here so now like I and I would not even advise anyone to especially if you have a family to stay in the basement so because housing is very rent is very cheap in Alberta as you know at least with two bedroom three bed you can still see maybe 15 and all that and also

13:10 the cost of living is also cheap compared to Ontario so things are you know cheaper here compared even the gas is like uh like for me my vehicle use premium gas so gas like gas are very very cheap so in this part of the compared to Ontario at least we produce gas so IATA produce a lot of gas a lot of uh petrol or gas or you know so now like uh it's like gas is very very cheap here so job opportunity like there are a lot of jobs in Albata so like lot of jobs lot of jobs so now and also with your Ontario experience you'll be able to like you know integrate into the system and at least if you submit your CV and they see that okay you are you

13:55 have Ontario experience you are different from people that doesn't have anything so now they will you know company will call you especially if you have the skill you have the certification those two things see skill certification is very very very important here yeah some people have the skill but because they don't have the certificate to back it up you know they are living like they will pay you less so those two are very very very important and yeah I know like another thing is community support we have lot of Nigerian community here African community Jamaican community one of my best friend is from Cameroon so we have Cameroon community. We have so many especially if you're in uh Edmonton and country. We have Nigerian country association. We have Nigerian Edmonton association. We have lots of uh

14:42 community here. So I don't think you will lack there like every time every time uh there's um there's always a show you know like there's always an activity going on summer activity winter activity compared to Ontario you know you can't compare you know Ontario you guys have every every week there's always a party or one Nian artist coming in and all that but here uh it is still the same thing like I don't know like there are lot of I'm not a party person but uh there are lot of activity you know uh here in our time it all depends on what you want and you know the kind of party so if it's every weekend nobody have time for weekend every weekend party here so everybody's always working and all that so but once in a while and you know there's always

15:28 time to chill out and all that so yeah and that is it the cost of living is cheap and you're welcome to any time so if you have any question or anything it's time for me to go home so let me start I already Oh, come on.
