1:35 opposed to all the other Sonic franchises out there they don't want to be confused with the restaurant they don't want people popping in and being like I'll take an icy and a hot dog um so what's your what's your history with this film franchise not let's not talk about Sonic the property the IP but this specific Paramount franchise we we've so we've covered Sonic 1 we covered the critically acclaimed wait we didn't cover Sonic one we we covered Knuckles we've talked about it no hold on hold on we've talked about hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on we never covered Sonic 1

2:20 no because it came out in 2020 which is like when we were that's yeah that's our birthday yeah whoa dude that's crazy we've you know what it is is we've just talked you and I about it a ton that I assume most of our talking these days is through the microphon so yeah yeah yeah wow um let me I lied to you I guess that's not part of my history of the film um I I love Sonic Adventure 2 I think I feel like everyone there's probably people out there that play every game in the Sonic franchise but I feel like if you're like a normal run-of-the-mill gamer I'm like an average gamer maybe like a a tiny step above above average mhm you have like one to two Sonic games

3:06 you played the [ __ ] out of as a kid what was your Sonic game Evan um my first one was Sonic R that was like game I had played some of the the the Sega iterations but then there's a a a PC game they're a bit different yeah um but Sonic Sonic Adventure 2 I think that's that's the touch stone for everyone in this that is I mean and I feel like every time I'm watching these movies TV shows the whole franchise now what they have managed to do better than I think almost anything that's like based on an intellectual property CU I come in here and I bash things all the time for being it's already a property we never get anything original but what they have managed to do with Sonic is

3:53 make it hella nostalgic mhm like just how do I say this like it's like just corny enough where I it's like almost looped back around we had the same conversation in Knuckles where there's like some jokes that are so outrageous that you actually like you roll your eyes for a second but then you start laughing after you know what I'm saying where they they this movie pecs it is it's an hour and 50 minutes and I swear it's two jokes a minute like they are Relentless with the humor in this movie yeah it's more comedy than um like action video game

4:39 but it it does pretty well it does pretty well it captures all those video game feels dude even I mean we'll just get right into it Sonic 3 a big portion of it is about Shadow yeah and I didn't know this about myself till I was a much older person but man I am drawn to the what is it called a duistt it's not a protagonist but it's a uh the foil not the foil but it's like the secondary protagonist the SAS a SASE if you will a bakugo a Shadow the Hedgehog I did not know this about myself I was much older I [ __ ] love Shadow I love every goddamn thing about him dude oh my God from the minute he

5:25 started teleporting around our our screen and doing like I don't want to say he runs what would you say shadow is doing gliding yeah like skating skating hover skating it's [ __ ] awesome dude it's the minute he started doing that [ __ ] I go I like I I gasped a little if I'm being honest I was like oh and also you know what I I'm GNA tease this because it's towards it's later in the movie there was one moment I was in the theater jaw a gaped I was actually Shook at what I had just seen scene and I don't think you'll guess it but I was genuinely taken AB okay go ahead I had one of those moments too and it was honestly probably my favorite moment of the movie top two um f should we just say that okay we'll wait we'll wait

6:12 we'll wait we'll wait we'll wait um but so yeah this franchise we we've never covered a Sonic film uh as the subject of the episode right we've talked a lot about the franchise we talked about this film franchise go it was when we talked about Chip and Dale it was right they made fun of the ugly Sonic thing I felt like we covered that whole Saga but you're you're so right we never covered it sorry I lied to everyone at the top of the the episode um but so the first one came out in 2020 this was the the the onset of covid and and quarantine is June 2 or no sorry January 25th 2020 is the US yeah or January February early early 2020 is the um of Sonic one this was the first

7:02 maybe movie simultaneous like at home release that I bought I like oh Sonic and I was extremely let down by that first movie I think it's got like a 67% so the first one is fine the reason it it it's actually a really wholesome reason that I think this whole franchise it's two wholesome reasons I think this whole franchise has flourished mhm one they drop a picture of ugly Sonic and the internet is torn aunder yeah no no no it's a whole reason yeah and what do they do they changed them they listened to the F they listened and they they react they didn't get defensive they didn't like say screw you internet fans we listen and we don't judge they we

8:37 performance yeah uh I think this is it this is it especially this third one I haven't gone back to watch the first two but like this one I need to go back and watch the first two again but we watch Knuckles pretty recently I feel like yeah but I mean that didn't Happ and he's not yeah it's not but like we were in the universe recently I feel like like and I don't want to say it paid off to watch that but I feel like the humor I I was very ready for the humor that was going to be in this if that makes sense mhm uh so the first first entry 2020 again uh but made on a budget of 85 to 90 million makes a box office of 320 million second entry that's prec Co numers baby that is pretty good that's that's pretty good we don't see that anymore we we're taking that for granted like for a mediocre I don't want to call

13:16 ever been a Casual Gamer and that was in the early ODS so like I don't know what games are like I would think like um fornite is like the latest you're right yeah it is not like a popular franchise it's not like a Pokemon or a Mario where it's coming out with a game every year they probably for a long time were coming out with games for every year but I think they took a step back they faltered a little their games weren't hitting the way they they were and uh they do have a game out right now that I think is a huge success but I think obviously part of that is is the revamping of the whole franchise kind of coming to fruition here um but I mean I guess they've been doing enough you know groundwork they they had regularly have animated series there was one on Netflix

14:02 it was like CGI kind of 3D they're doing stuff they they're using the property I just think that this movie made me want more from like the Mario movie The Super Mario Bros movie okay I like the Super Mario Bros movie but I was like I think we could up it like even you know what I mean like the Mario movie like like it was funny at times and it was good and nostalgic but like Sonic is good nostalgic and like [ __ ] hilarious like okay right there of the gate they're they get called on their super secret spy mission in Tokyo which is such a level from Sonic Adventure 2 literally they had the Ring of like cars

14:47 and everything I was like dude this is unbelievable the memories this is unlocking but they're flying and to Christian Ritter's character right before they're about to jump out he goes this has been a terrible flight no meal no drinks we'll see you later and he just jumps out and I was like that was [ __ ] awesome Yes Christ R Ritter is new to the the you know the cast he ditch kid Cy I thought he was gonna be here that would have been fun to see him again um but I think that speaks to the power and the longevity of this character that a kid cuy is down jumping for a six episode miniseries that probably not a lot of people watched Christian Ritter is down to to jump in and opposite of Jim Carrey I don't know if she has any personal Nostalgia with the Sonic

17:09 specifically and I I read this earlier in the production on notes on Wikipedia is that he was pretty much cast to do John Wick because he's that's all he's been doing Goa yeah see I get yeah and it did not detract from my love of Shadow I still loved him but there was many times I was like oh yeah this is Keo Reeves I can hear um Idris eldra is fine he's another one but you know what I consider Idris Elba like such a leading star and I forget he's like fifth billing in like all the Thor movies or like s like bottom you know what I mean like he's not as much of outside of the UK he's not is that what it is he's just I I stand by this I don't know if I say this enough on the podcast British
