01 all right so we just got finished watching the first original Digimon movie as opposed to the English Digimon movie which is a compilation of the first three Japanese Digimon movies which is all very confusing um so um I'm gonna start this off um what was your biggest surprise of watching that anyone anything leaped out at you this thing can you guys hear me I can hear you yep yeah uh oh
47 cool any thoughts I felt like it was a good predecessor to the start of the series kind of thing it was interesting how little dialogue there was yeah also interesting how the um um how much it uses Bolero which is a song that in itself has repetition and you know this Evolution which is that theme of the show um any anyone have any particular um most memorable moment of
32 that I came into the middle so I didn't really see a whole lot so I'm not sure what to say fair enough like the art was good really well overall throughout the whole thing it's funny watching the um watching something like this where clearly the animators finally got a budget yeah that show had such such a low budget it's like finally we can actually show the kids like climbing down ladders and he me I can hear whoever's talking it's also interesting because there are so few characters it's only
17 half an hour but still it's it's very constrained anything else anyone noticed is particularly interesting well I notic that uh if you can hear me um yes you're very soft but I can hear you oh yes I noticed that um you can't tell the friendly characters from The Bad characters in this movie yeah which is very interesting it is um especially when the TV show presents Theon as CLE I mean dangerous but are all good V all like but you get I mean you go into aamon and from that point on and they're darn
03 scary yeah it sort of show like how like the bigger ones how he sort of surprised that he got that big yeah and like CU they're kids they're they're scared of it yeah just like the whole size different from the actual series with compared to like how tall he is like like the actual size of a what would one think would be a baby Tyrannosaurus Rex like and he's toing over the little kids I mean both of them break down crying you know I mean Hikari is just you know like um I was also interested how like opens the door for um uh you know for him to get out and then um like she
51 climbs on the on on on his back and says outside and then he jumps so he's like following her directions but very quickly she starts getting increasingly freaked out by this and by the end of it she just you know she's done yeah and now agaman was so aggressive towards everything like when that truck came and he was about to like do massive road rage yeah you saw I mean he he launched a few Fireballs that hit some apartment buildings died probably jeez yeah it's a whole lot different from the actual series it doesn't look very child friendly anim this
36 animation for the first movie they're gonna get every kid in it showed more of a realistic aspect to the series exactly it's like in the in the first season you know they they did all these huge things where every kid's like cool but in this one they're all freaking out kind of thing yeah um I'm actually looking something up because I noticed um gosh it's hard to find actual numbers on this I'm wondering when this came out um 1999 um
23 because of course I'm going everything back to Lane um but like the apartment building where this we mon Shadows above it does have this very dis and even with the dark uh theme of the like there at night but still the colors were very very bright and very I I think that they really made sure that the drawings were excellent yeah I think they really worked hard on
12 that and are all these were drawn by hand right mhm yep which is amazing too yeah it's actually interesting see how um how how bright like those daytime seems they're almost Overexposed yeah very like they take this very different on the show but and yet it all fits
00 within the mythology of the showu um the Digimon following see all those different elements very much fit but at the same time as to say there's this you know immense scary thing in real life yeah which character did you guys connect with most Ty or S I'm G to say Ty yeah Tai had a more realistic approach to when aaman came around so freaking out they worried about his sister being
47 on it yeah true well and it's interesting too because he actually like the or like she's the one who actually befriends coron yeah who freaks out and she's like no no no we we'll but in the series uh they look in in this movie they look fairly young but in the series they look a bit older right but they don't remember they met this big animal so this is a controversy yeah which is interesting
33 yeah Canon um I think I don't know sequence or just I don't know Minor Details ex or maybe it's a parallel universe right there we go yeah I did watch the original series but uh or those characters like maybe kind of blocked out the memory of the Digimon because of it was traumatizing or something it could be I don't know yeah that works so for all seven odd kids to be
19 traumatized yeah I I don't know the Digimon series I didn't know like seven of them were traumatized I don't know but um do ovas usually just go straight into it like I always notic like obas have their own different kind of plot and idea from like the obas and the actual series when they actually release it so that's a point like so basically once they like show the OVA and like they get like good reviews from it then they can say okay well we have this budget let's go this direction yeah and this is weird because you know they they were already successful so for those who don't know um um this is directed by memoral hosoda who went on to direct Summer Wars um for those watching he also directed one of the episodes of the show those who've seen
06 it um season one When Ty comes back to um the real world and like an afternoon at home oh and the time was like off kind of thing exactly that's the one that was an amazing part of the show kind of thing yeah oh it's that guy um yeah yeah he he had been helping out with a show a bit and so he that one they wanted to do a movie they said okay you know you could direct this one and like this was a this was released direct to theaters as a half hour movie um and apparently they do that a lot especially for the kids um shows they do half hour movies release like one a year um and they normally don't have like a full hour and a half long
54 film you think here's an interesting question um obviously this is a nicely self-contained thing um would it have been better or more interesting or or more um put it if they had made an hour and a half long film um would that have had the impact on you that this 30 minute film had are they condensing the same stuff in here and stretching it out to an hour and a half something like that it would feel a lot stretched out kind of thing yeah dragged out yeah and this one filled me with lots of questions it's it's like I want to know more about it it's not just it's one
40 hour and a half maybe it's a bit fulfilling but the more questions you have the better audience you capture right yeah I agree it's also kind of remarkable when you think back to like this is the length little longer of a full episode of the TV series um and you know kind of sort of not much happens in this you know it it's really just you know kids encounter this thing there's a fight at the end it's kind of interesting how much they get to pack into an episode of a TVC so what else did you guys see um I could definitely tell that this
28 was something that did after seeing his other movies the way that his characters interact with each other and his use of music and that kind of stuff very much like him I personally saw that like it not only did it have like towards like was directed towards like the younger audience but also had kind of like that theme where it could have been like acceptable for like tons of adults to go see just for the hell of it like and didn't have like that kind of like kidish like um Pokemon feel or the actual series of Digimon with like it's just directed four little kids like and also it has all the range of
13 emotions in it you see them scared you see them angry them funny and amazed and you can see all almost all the emotions in that half an hour which is interesting too in general I think that most most anime like they're able to like portray like emotions a lot better because they're able to exaggerate the emotions with the um uh what's word I'm looking for the illustrations and stuff uh there are still and that memorial thing as well it there are moments in that that still cause me to laugh where like um the first time coron thanks him by thinking up Tai's head um and it just comes out of nowhere and okay um and uh
03 it is that that sort of more subtle mamor hosta style of of Storytelling where you don't get a line of dialogue this almost as non-reaction yes you think that so one of the typical things they they they they say to in a um a kid movie is to have a lot of dialogue to explain kid going on on um you think this film would have been improved with more dialogue because I mean there is a lot in here that they to leave up to the viewer do no I think the dialog like it's fine
49 as it is um like the it's not too complex of a scenario that's going into yeah true it it goes back to like like how you ask like if they dragged it up to an hour and a half like if they added more dialogue in that short amount of time it just would have just I guess what's the word I'm looking for been too condensed maybe is that what I'm looking for trying to say okay I have out we try to overe explain something that's not that doesn't need too much explaining to get through to you there we go thank you
36 but when you pointed out in the chat that like you can see all the other uh kids randomly in the scenes I thought that was interesting after I'm like huh really oh yeah you can that and and they're all also kind of in personality too Joe immediately calls Emergency Services um also I noticed that um near the very end when I Blows the Whistle it's Sora who says that boy so it's it's like there's that connection right there yep I I I like the voice of the old mod conect connection if you if you noticed
22 it how they evolve with that sound I really like the old modern sound too and I wonder if that isn't sort of a theme that this technology is all around us and so we do just kind of get used to all of these sounds um you the tie is walking around imitating a b machine sure true in the movie was it ever explained where the Digimon came from I'm not in this movie no um not you have to go back and watch the TV series an explanation yeah it's an interesting you
08 know direction to take that we just literally see it then that's it so that means this movie is supposed to be in Canon with the TV show not really um it follows with all of the rules um but it wouldn't make sense thats have this experience and then have the experience they have later and not reflect back on what happened it's like again like Ultimate Universe or something like that if it's an my whole thought process right now is I think it's pretty
54 interesting how if this is off Canon it's it's it's like you're trying to start a new story and I think it's an interesting take to try to make the Digimon origin just kind of mysterious and really draw you in into it yeah I think it's very interesting so who here saw Pokemon the first season Pokemon the first season the movie oh the first yes um and m y no I need to watch it yeah actually I remember I think I
40 was ninth grade when the video games were getting ready to be released in the United States and I'm like I gotta have it like I gotta have it and then like the car game came out and I started collecting all those cars with my brother and at the time I was also playing D&D and Magic the Gathering well like for me when I was a kid I didn't go for Pokemon I actually went for Digimon instead nice so like Digimon it comes more better to me than Pokemon does so yeah so how how would you guys compare this movie with the first Pokemon movie the first Pokemon movie was definitely more uh I wouldn't say this
26 wasn't kid-friendly but Pokemon like was more kid-friendly like like I said this had more of a like a range from like kids to adults instead of like Pokemon's movie being like okay parents here you kick this biger kids to the movie to see this and hope you stay awake I think that the first Pokemon movie was a lot more fantasy based than this one definitely like I think the first Pokemon was more about like um mistakes about you know how m meww is doing all that stuff and he founds out it's wrong to do this while this movie is just about
14 shock this is happening so like go ahead one's about like finding the truth of what's what's right what's wrong well this is like there's so many mysterious factors here kind of thing so one's find the truth is one while one the other it's questions is it interesting how that's that's thing some of Wars isn't so much about what is right or wrong as it is
03 anything else you guys um because it's a there are lots of children in it I didn't see any fan service in this yeah this animation which is cool but this is a bit rare I mean very I did notice too that like it didn't seem like a half an hour like it seem like it went by so fast like yeah yeah that's true too yeah I didn't realize a half an hour pass I'm like oh wow it's already done but again I guess kind of goes with that whole like theme where it's going like oh here it's like this you can't really draw out yeah like not much is explained
52 yeah I guess it LO better I guess that's why it seemed like it went by so fast there we go yeah that's true yeah it it and you're absolutely right it helps having that um relatively simple premise because you're just going from you know this plot point to this plot point to this plot Point without getting derailed well like what I noticed from watching this because I own the English version of Digimon and I think I noticed that the only parts that actually cut out from this segment of it was when the father's coming home I think that's like the only part that's cut out oh yeah so that's how nice it flows and what was the implication of that scene by the way his father was drunk and and what did the mother say you come home every night like
40 this not the best thing to portray in the English worldly you wouldn't see that in Pokemon professor here's your get go on your journey Alone by yourself the dangerous Beast you know we never did see Ash's father so [Laughter]
29 anything else you guys noticed or found interesting I can't think of anything off the top of my head now like no probably like a free open ending that it had to so like what happens next youds find out yeah watch the series exactly one of the things I particularly liked um was how when and I have no idea what the ner is when the the giant electric elri um is first hit um you cut to the
15 road and you just see feathers coming down um and these feathers are like the size of cars and it's just that weird the realistic value yeah exactly the idea bizarre huge thing that a feather is large enough to like make a car Rock back and forth so like size comparison of how big these things are really are yeah which gets back to that previous thing then it's interesting how they make take a much more realistic approach to all this of saying that you know all of this wonderful fantasy stuff you seen that's what it really does in the real world yeah yeah
02 cool all right um well then I am going to uh stop the recording here thank you all very much for being part of it thank you yeah was fun thanks was
