01 The Crow is a 1989 comic book created by James O'Barr who actually wrote The Crow comic book when he was coping with the unexpected death of his fiance who was killed by a drunk driver. Then The Crow became a 1994 supernatural fantasy thriller movie about a rock star named Eric Draven who on Devil's Night which is the eve of Halloween and when he was to marry his fiance
48 Shelly Webster on Devil's Night Eric and Shelly are killed in a home invasion by four thugs T-Bird Funboy Tin Tin and Skank. A year after the incident Eric is brought back to life by a crow which guides him on his quest to find each of the thugs and he kills them off in an act of revenge. The Crow is a supernatural bird that serves as Eric's link between the
33 living and the realm of the dead. The Crow is known for an accident that occurred during the making of the movie. Brandon Lee who was the son of the late martial arts actor Bruce Lee was shot and killed on the filming set. First was said by one of the rigging crew that there was a rig harness for Brandon to wear as they planned to throw knives
18 at him and it was meant to hit him in the chest but the harness was to protect him. And he was getting it ready for him. Then he was told he was needed to go on the set and said change of plans, he's going to come through the door and get shot. On the 31st of March, 1993 at EUE Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina they were filming a scene where Eric is walking into his flat
05 carrying a shopping bag. And as he enters, he sees Shelly being beaten and raped by the thugs. As he comes in a gun is fired by Funboy who was played by an actor named Michael Massee shoots him and Brandon falls forward. In the movie, he was meant to fall forward but instead, he fell backwards. When the scene was being shot Brandon did as planned. Michael Massee
54 fired the gun. But, it was not planned to fall backwards. And the gun was fired from a distance of 13 to 15 ft. So, when the gun fired, it it and he went falling backwards. The original plan was he goes down on his knees. It was meant to come towards the camera like that. Straight after Brandon fell, Alex Proyas, the movie's director, shouted, "Cut!" But, Brandon did not respond. And first, the crew thought he was
41 either still acting in character or joking. Then, a stunt coordinator named Jeff Amada, whatever you pronounce that, went up to Brandon and noticed something was not right. He found that Brandon was unconscious and breathing heavily. A medic on the set named Clyde Baisey then came over to Brandon and started shaking him. Maybourne, Brandon, are you okay?
27 And seeing maybe if he was dazed after hitting his head in the fall. But, nobody thought Brandon was shot as there was not yet any visible bleeding. And his pulse was taken and it was normal but after two or three minutes the pulse slowed down. But someone who attended to Brandon lifted up his shirt and saw the blood pooling around the gunshot wound.
15 And found that Brandon had been struck in the abdomen. 911 was called and an ambulance came. Brandon was rushed to New Hanover Regional Medical Clinic in Wilmington, North Carolina and straight in for surgery to try and save him. All of the crew came in to see was everything going to be okay and hoping he would make it.
01 He was operated on for six hours but there was no success. And he was pronounced dead at 1:03 p.m. aged only 28 years old. The cause of the accident was a doing of a dummy round. And it was important to always remove the primer cap from the center. When they put the dummy round and and they had removed the gunpowder,
50 but they forgot to remove a primer and it had enough to dislodge and lead a round and actually push it into the barrel. As you look down a barrel of a revolver when you take it out like this, and if you don't see a light, there's still something in the barrel. Meaning there was an obstruction inside. The crew did not check the barrel for an obstruction. And if you put a blank in a gun or anything,
38 the piece comes out at 3 to 5,000 PSI, meaning if the barrel was checked, the accident could have been prevented. Brandon Lee was buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Seattle, Washington next to his father Bruce Lee. On Brandon's grave, it is inscribed what he said in his final on-camera interview, which Brandon said was a wonderful quote
25 in a book called Sheltering Sky where it said, "Because we do not know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well, and yet everything happens only for a certain number of times. In a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood? An afternoon that is so deeply an art of your being,
13 but yet you can't even conceive of your life without it. Perhaps four or five times more, perhaps not that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. Yet it all seems limitless. I've never been to Brandon Lee's grave, but how I know that I've seen YouTube videos of it. So, that's his headstone, but then it's all inscribed on this part here.
00 The Crow was close to being a doomed movie. After all, its producers were in the odd decision of scrapping the movie or continuing with ginormous difficulty, but to make the movie a tribute to Brandon. Brandon did have most scenes in the movie completed. There delays due to controversy of the movie being too violent and inappropriate due to Al Brandon died. So, they made the movie less contented.
49 Then, they started to rewrite with narration and flashbacks of the omen invasion. At the start of the movie that was not finished had all been rewritten of the omen invasion in the apartment was done with computer graphics and earlier scenes with Brandon. The scene where Brandon died was not in the movie. And I said in the scene he was supposed to be shot. But, instead as they said they were planning to throw knives at him.
36 They used a stunt double. And I'm sure they put on the safety harness and had knife thrown in his back. And instead they tossed Eric, Brandon's character out the window and fell to his death instead. The body stunt double was Chad Stahelski. Also, at the time they used groundbreaking CGI effects. They digitally put Brandon's face over
25 Chad's face. which was done by digital effects supervisor named Tim Landy. So, first they used an unused close-up of Brandon, which was isolated to the actual shot and add another element called a displacement map. They used a digital moving outline for when he comes back to his apartment in a 5-second shot that took 600
10 man-hours to complete. Sometimes, only his face was removed from certain scenes. A lot of reshoots and reworks were done. There was a scene meant to be in the movie where there was to be a character named Skull Cowboy, who was to act as Eric's guide between the living and the realm of the dead and was to be played by an actor called Michael Berryman. But, Brandon was needed for the final scenes.
55 So, they scrapped all of where Skull Cowboy was meant to be in it. They eventually got the movie completed. Then, the movie was released in cinemas on 13th of May, 1994 and has been one of the most iconic movies ever made. And is still a popular movie to this day, loved by many. Many people came to see it when it came out to pay their respects to Brandon.
43 Before the movie's end credits roll, it says for Brandon and Eliza. The movie was dedicated to Brandon and his fiance, Eliza Hutton, who Brandon was to marry on the 17th of April, 1993, after the movie's original completion. Very sad that he died 18 days before his wedding. Michael Massee, who fired the gun but accidentally killed Brandon,
29 continued acting, but for the rest of his life was forever in terrible trauma. Michael then died of stomach cancer on the 20th of October, 2016, aged just 64 years old. Years later, James O'Barr said years after the release of the comic and the movie, he regretted ever writing the comic after hearing Brandon's tragic accidental death. Remarking Brandon dying was like his
18 fiance dying all over again.
