01 In this video we will learn how to create glossaries and how to connect them to our translation projects. Now to create a glossary you need to go to the home view and press terminology management button or you can add an icon to your task bar which is this one and launch it from here which is called SDL multi-term. This is what I do, I launch the application. I can meanwhile minimize the main window here and this is the application for us to deal with. when we work with glossaries. Instead of creating a glossary from scratch in SDL multi-term and adding term after term, I prefer to save time and do it in a different way. So I can minimize this window as well. And in my trading course folder, I have a glossary that I prepared before in Microsoft Excel format.
51 I guess most of you are familiar with this format. Now for us to be to make sure that we can extract the words that word combinations from Microsoft Excel we have to observe and to keep the following format. The first you have first you have to have a column of target source language and a column of target language and make sure you have headers for both of the columns specified in Microsoft Excel. After you're done with this you can close Microsoft Excel. are and another step in this case will be the conversion process as you can see I have added another icon here on my taskbar which is called as the L multi-term convert so this is what I do actually click it and I
41 have seven steps to complete for the conversion process so I go next I will do my new conversion sessions when go next again and I select Microsoft Excel format like this as you can see I have a number formats here but I prefer so I go next here I browse for the file for the file itself I go to desktop my folder and here's my Excel we will also have three more files created as you can see nothing to be changed here so we go next it's absolutely critical for you in this dialogue to specify both of these languages the target language which is Russian and this source which is English. So I will select English from my first language.
32 Let it be English United States right here. And I will also select my Russian language which should be Russian Russia like this. Then I go next and we can finish the process. have 10 entries successfully converted so I go next and I finish now let's go back to our glossary folder here we have just created three more files with our Excel file right now let's now we're ready to actually create a glossary in our in the multi-term so this is what I do I will move these folder down here for you to be able to see things and I returned
18 to as the amount term I go file new create term base are as you can see here let's go to documents as the L multi-term we have a folder for glossaries to be stored in our documents folder and in the in in term basis folder I create another one called sample TB for us to simply see what the glossary is and how many files will be created and I also suggest for you guys to create extra folders for every single glossary you make to be able to simply distinguish between them so I will name my glossary like this sample term base
09 and sample to be in this case is sample term base right and I press save a wizard appears and go next and here instead of creating it from scratch since I have passed through the conversion process I will use this third option and I will browse for one of the files that were created during the conversion process in this case this is this xdt file you see this one okay I go training course sample files glossary and I selected from here I go next Now I need to specify a friendly name for my glossary. It'll be this. This is my source language. This is my target language. I go next. And pretty much nothing to change
55 here. So I go through to the very last window and I go finish. Now we have our term base created. This is it. This is the term base. At the moment it is empty. If you right click it, you will see a number of options available to you like import into it, export from it, create new, open and so on. Now we need to import some of the information into our turn base, which means we will need another file of these three ones, which is this one. So what I do is I browse for the file. Here it goes, the file. I go next. Now here I need to allow over complete entries. These are entries that or word combinations to have
45 some extra attributes. And since I want to have to for my glossary to have most of the entries, I allow this option as well. And we need to specify an exclusion file. In this case, this will be a file where some of the entries that did not pass the verification process will be stored. Since we have created a proper excel file and we have successfully passed through the conversion process None of the files will none of the entries will actually be stored in exclusion But still we need to specify it so I'd rather name it like um X inclusion and I go save okay next and we wait for the the process to complete 10 entries were processed so we go next and we go finished and
35 Now let's change from the term basis view to browse and here we see all of my 10 entries that were initially contained in the glossary in the excel file. All of them are here. Now we are ready to add this glossary to our translation project. be just to do this you don't really need to have it open in the SDL multi-term window so you can simply close it by pressing ctrl o removing this mark here okay and you can even close the application itself I mean as the L multi-term okay so here in documents as the L
20 and as the L multi term term basis in my folder sample TB I have all the glossary files in one place as you can see a single glossary consists of five files so you don't need to actually move any of these ones from this folder right for your glossary to be able to work properly and also as to these files that we created during the conversion process you don't really need any of those as a matter of fact if you if in future you'd like to add some more terms to your Excel file you can simply open it and edit save it and rerun the conversion process so I can simply delete all of these files and close the glossary folder now I return to as the L Trader Studio and I go straight to our
08 project which is project 1 this file is one weird the only open it and here we go to project settings now in this window you need to go to yes to all language pairs subsection and here we have the term basis so I select it and here's the add button I press it here press browse my sample to be a folder and here's the term base itself then I go okay this dialogue simply informs us that the default term base has been changed no worries about this just okay
54 and okay again so here's this this window this pane okay the area where terms will be displayed to us let's select for example a sentence to see how it works now if I put my cursor here we can see that no results available this means that the active translation the active term base contains no matches now let's move to this segment to the next one as you can see we have a match here the word bulk material now has this red cap over it and I'm simply able to use this term instead of typing this translation I will simply open this file since I have it
40 translated before I'll open it just to speed up the process of typing the translation so I just need to select these this part of the sentence like this I copy it and I paste it into here okay now observe the way it works I simply type one letter and I have the suggestion from the glossary that I just connected okay so what I do is I simply take it like this then I edit it this and I change the case this should be number case like this and by the way for you to play with with case with the case of war of words you need to simply select the word then you select the left shift
30 and you hold the left shift and you press F3 F3 like this okay now I'm ready to save this second I press ctrl enter Now we can see that we have no results available from our glossary to this segment. And let's, for example, test this sentence like this. As you can see here, we have a number of matches, three matches to be exact. So I go, I will simply copy it from the file that I translated before. like this I will paste it and then
20 I continue translation I can simply take it okay I have another match as well just make make me let sure let me make sure things are right here yeah then I simply type another letter like this option and this one as well as you can see I have three matches so I was able to simply take them from the glossary and there was no need for me to retype these this phrase okay this phrase and this phrase as well now I'm ready to confirm this sentence and to proceed I press ctrl s to save my document
08 so this is the way you can deal with glossaries If you have a glossary prepared before you actually create a translation project then you can go to projects pane and you can press ctrl n for you to create another project and to specify and add that glossary to your project. So you would go next. Here's the name suggested by the program. Go next. You check your languages. You add some file. Go next. next again and this is the dialogue where you have to specify you need to specify your term base to be used like this the same window no worries about this go okay and you will simply have to go through the same procedure of
56 creating your project and this project will already contain the glossary for you to be able to use it now the thing is that I don't really use and create glossaries very often because anyway, this is actually some time that you have to spend or sometimes even to waste because I think it's sometimes if it's much easier to actually run a concordance search, Procedure for you to be able to instantly find any matches But this is still this is up to you because sometimes you might have orders from your Cons customers insisting on creating glossaries and adding their own information into the glossaries But anyway now you're able to actually create those glossaries and to add them to your translation projects to
44 be able to benefit from this if for some reason you need to delete your glossary from from your disk, you go to multi-term, and then you press Ctrl-O, this is your glossary, you go OK, and you right-click it and you select Delete Turnbase. This is the way to do it. But before you do it, I guess it's better for you to return to your project and to actually remove that turnbase from the settings of your project to be able to completely remove it from your disk. So this is it about glossaries. I'll see you in the next video.
