Brief Summary

This video provides an overview of Season 5 of the classic Doctor Who series, which aired from 1967 to 1968, starring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor. The season is notable for the rediscovery of complete stories like "Tomb of the Cyberman" and "Enemy of the World" after many episodes were lost due to the BBC's archive purge. The season introduced iconic elements such as the Great Intelligence, the Ice Warriors, and the Sonic Screwdriver, while also featuring the return of the Cybermen. Despite being a strong season, it is criticized for its repetitive "base under siege" format and the concentration of certain villains.

  • Rediscovery of lost episodes
  • Introduction of iconic elements
  • Repetitive story format

Tomb of the Cyberman

The rediscovery of a complete copy of "Tomb of the Cyberman" in Hong Kong was a significant event. The story introduced the cybermats, established Telos as a new Cyberman home planet, and featured a frozen legion of Cybermen. While initially highly regarded, its reputation diminished slightly upon viewing, with some finding it a solid but not exceptional four-episode Cyberman story, complete with a racist character. The Cyber Controller's head design is also humorously noted for its phallic resemblance.

The Abominable Snowman

"The Abominable Snowman" marks the introduction of the Great Intelligence, later portrayed by Richard E. Grant. Set before the Second Doctor's debut of his Yeti skin jacket, the story involves the Great Intelligence using robotic Yeti to menace a Buddhist monastery. This six-episode story is mostly missing from the archives, making its recovery highly desirable for fans.

The Ice Warriors

"The Ice Warriors" introduces the Martian race of the same name, who later appeared in the new series episode "Cold War." The story revolves around one of their ships crashing in the ice, leading to a defrosted Ice Warrior causing chaos in a future frozen Earth. The name "Ice Warrior" was given by someone who found one in the ice and assumed it was a Viking. The story's explanation for the Ice Age, involving a drop in carbon dioxide levels, is scientifically inaccurate. Two missing episodes were animated for the DVD release.

The Enemy of the World

"The Enemy of the World" was one of the stories recovered in 2013 and was reappraised positively after its return. This six-part story features the TARDIS crew caught in an espionage plot, with the would-be dictator Salamander being the Doctor's exact double. Patrick Troughton's acting is highlighted as he portrays both the Doctor and Salamander, sometimes in the same scene. The story also includes notable special effects for its time, particularly during a fight inside the TARDIS.

The Web of Fear

"The Web of Fear," also recovered in 2013, sees the return of the Great Intelligence. The story involves the Yetis attacking the London Underground, opposed by the TARDIS crew and an army led by Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, later known as the Brigadier. The disembodied Great Intelligence is linked to the Cthulhu Mythos in the books. The story was already considered a classic before its rediscovery and remains so.

Fury from the Deep

"Fury from the Deep" is a missing story involving a connected set of oil rigs under attack from evil foam, seaweed, and gas, all controlled by a single mind that possesses people. Despite its ludicrous concept, the story is effective, creating a claustrophobic and eerie atmosphere. It also features the best single shot in the show's history, depicting a character vomiting evil gas. The story marks the introduction of the Sonic Screwdriver. Victoria leaves the TARDIS due to being tired of the constant danger.

The Wheel in Space

"The Wheel in Space" introduces Zoe, the Second Doctor's final companion, who is intellectually equal to the Doctor. The story also marks the first use of "John Smith" as the Doctor's alias. In this six-part adventure, the Cybermen attack a space station called the Wheel, and the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe must save the day by destroying the Cybermen's fleet. The Doctor's actions in this story contradict his later claims of hating weaponry, as he actively kills Cybermen.

0:16 knowy Treasures of hisory of time all the Hand Works remain season five of classic who ran from the second of September 1967 till the 1st of June 1968 from harnell to McCoy the lengths of the seasons tended to get shorter as the show got older Harel Seasons tended to have 10 stories while for much of the 80s there were only four this season is seven making it the

1:01 shortest thus far there were 40 episodes in total this is one of The Season's hardest hit for the BBC's Firebase storage system until the early '90s there were no complete stories found then came along T of the Cyberman the discovery of a complete copy of Tomb of the Cyberman in Hong Kong was a massive deal it was considered one of the last greats of the show it introduced the cybermats gave the Cyberman a new home planet in Telos and featured a frozen Legion of Cybermen it was considered once you saw it some of the luster was lost many of the shows that get returned get reappraised once you can actually see them and tomb was no exception it wasn't quite as good as everyone thought it was it was important yeah and it's good but it's just not

1:48 earth shatteringly good it's a solid four episodes of mid-60s Cyberman with a random racist character to boot and yes the Cyber controller's head looks like a massive dick If Only They that design element for age of Steel next up is the Abominable Snowman the story that introduced the great intelligence recently seen being played by Richard E Grant a man noteworthy for being the official Ninth Doctor until he was removed from continuity and replaced with eckl he also played one of the unofficial doctors in the first piece of Doctor Who Steven Mofford ever wrote The Curse of the Fatal death the Abominable Snowman is set inbet the second doctor debuts His Brilliant Yeti skin jacket and the great intelligence uses robotic Yeti to Menace a Buddhist Monas the story is six episodes long and it's currently mostly missing it's a real

2:35 shame next up is another six parter the ice Warriors where we meet the guys from the title they recently appeared in season 7 of new who in Cold War they're a Hardy Warrior Race from Mars and one of their ships crashed in the ice and in future Frozen Earth one of them gets defrosted and the reptile [ __ ] hits the fan the ice Warriors are one of the races not named by themselves but were named by a guy who found one in the ice he he assumed it was a viking and named him an ice Warrior a giant among prehistoric men see the kind of armor he's got on he looks prev Viking proper ice Warrior is these her quite why a viking with a bright green skin they never explain you could point out that maybe they weren't intended to be green in this story but yeah they

3:21 were one of the characters just thought Vikings were green skinned and scaly another funny thing is the story's explanation for the Ice Age a severe drop in the carbon dioxide level in the Earth's lower atmosphere the carbon dioxide level in the Earth's atmosphere helps to retain the sun's heat take that gas away and there's a sudden freeze up the amount of growing plants on the planet was reduced to an absolute minimum no plants no carbon dioxide my brains are going into my feet plants use up carbon dioxide no plants would mean more carbon dioxide not less and that would mean the planet would be warmer the ice Warriors mostly still exist and it missing two episodes were animated for the DVD release the enemy

4:08 of the world was the first of two stories returned in 2013 like to of the Cyberman it was reappraised after its return and unlike to him it was for the better the enemy of the world is six parts Long and features the Tardis crew embroiled in a semi- Espionage story because the wouldbe dictator of the world a Mexican called salamander is the exact double of the doctor the story really showcases Patrick trouton's acting ability out of all the people who have played the doctor he is probably the most gifted actor and in this he plays the doctor salamander the doctor pretending to be salamander and salamander pretending to be the doctor sometimes in the same scene if this story had starred any other doctor it would have been at best risky and at worst laughable it also features one of the best special effect sequences from

4:53 early classic Who as salamander and the doctor fight inside the Tardis you can download a copy of this and I tunes for Fairly cheap or buy it on DVD the web of fear comes next it's the second story returned in 2013 it's a sixpar and features the return of the great intelligence they really must have been confident that the intelligence in the yetis would be the next big thing what with them appearing twice in the same season and only two stories apart but I guess they must have been wrong the intelligence didn't appear again until the Snowman and knew who and then it was armed with a very different type of Snowman the web of fear did not get re praised after it was returned it was a classic before and it's a classic now the intelligence has the yetis attack the London Underground and the only thing that can defeat them are the Tardis crew and the Army LED in the

5:40 mission by Colonel Alis Gordon Lethbridge Stewart later known as the Brigadier the disembodied great intelligence is another extremely powerful being that was connected with the culu Mythos in the books he's y sth so that's cool the DVD for this story has not been released yet so please forgive the Telly snaps if you're a tall interest in seeing some great classic who then you should download this story from iTunes right now the next story is Victoria's last and it's one of the still missing absolute Classics of the show Fury from the deep six episodes of atmosphere and a ludicrous concept that works way more than it should there's a connected set of oil rigs and they're under attack from Evil foam evil seaweed and evil gas they all have a single mind and they like to possess people and it's

6:26 down to the Tardis cre to help save the day this is the sort of concept that shouldn't work to such a degree that it rightfully would have been laughed out of the room in the Russell to Davis era and he invented the sline but it works it's claustrophobic Eerie ominous and the sheer alienness of what they're dealing with is brilliant a comedy show called Dead ringers made the point that most of the second doctor's monsters were made of tin foil oh my good art now let's bang out of order you know that all his villains were made out of tin fo but that's not true it's much sillier than that most of them were made of fog foam and stuff like that okay well maybe the fog and the foal weren't technically monsters but they still turned up a lot and how effective it could be is just

7:11 [ __ ] hilarious it shouldn't work but usually it did Fury from the deep also features the best single shot from the show's history the only footage we still have from this story is from the sensor cuts that the Australian Broadcasting Corporation made to the episodes when they imported them so we still have this a freaky as hell looking guy vomiting evil gas on someone [ __ ] great this story also introduced the Sonic Screwdriver now my favorite Sonic Screwdriver was the one in the Manan movie and I hate the light at the end of the new serieses in fact I came dangerously close to ranting about it in one of my [ __ ] who reviews saying [ __ ] like the classic Who sonic screwdriver didn't have a light the light's [ __ ] stupid and other really rational things like that but then I remembered that

7:57 Patrick trout and Sonic Screwdriver had a light on the end and I can no longer whine about new who making the Sonic stupid looking by Illuminating it victoria left because she was tired of all this nearly dying crap on the Tardis she was an orphan teenager with no family so she decided to stay with some people from the story hopefully not on the oil rig Fury from the deep is [ __ ] great and it's the last Ed return to the archives if I could sell someone else's sold for five missing Doctor Who stories and lastly the final story of the season the wheel in space it introduced the second doctor's final companion Zoe the first companion to be smart enough to rival the doctor she also wore a catsuit and her ass has its own Facebook fan page the last thing introduced in this story was John Smith being used as the doctor's Alias on and

8:43 off it's still being used today the wheel in space is a six parter and features the Cyberman they couldn't use the Dos this season so they double the Cyberman and double the great intelligence never accuse classic Who of not thinking outside the box so the Cybermen are attacking a space station called the wheel and it falls to the doctor and Jamie and Now Zoe to save the day by blowing their Fleet up I really hate youo sometimes tendency to have the doctor claim to hate Weaponry in refusing to kill because he kills quite a few in classic Who as I see it the character has no qualms about killing when it's necessary something that Moret to his credit seems to understand like in day of the moon when he arranges for the silence to cause their own genocide of course he's not quite so subtle in this one he electrocutes a captive Cyberman and Alters the station's laser

9:30 to destroy an entire fleet of Cybermen anyway that was season 5 it's definitely a strong season probably the best thus far but it does have its issues like it's repeating itself a lot all but one were base Under Siege stories and with the great intelligence and the Sidman getting two stories each there was only three left for everything else it's a season of very good stories that could maybe have benefited from being spread around all three of trouton's Seasons rather than being concentrated in the one at least that way there would have been more variety the next season is trouton's last it features my favorite classic Who Story the introduction of unit and the debut of Robert Holmes arguably the best writer the classic series had
