Brief Summary

In this episode, Surfi and Paul from SP Filmviewers review "Digimon: The Movie." Paul, a long-time fan, introduces Surfi to the Digimon franchise, comparing it to Pokémon. They discuss the film's storyline, character designs, and music, and its segmented structure. Surfi shares her initial impressions as a newcomer, while Paul offers nostalgic insights. They also touch on the film's cultural context, humor, and overall impact, and give scores.

  • The movie is a compilation of three shorter films, two of which were directed by the same person.
  • The first two parts of the film are coherent and enjoyable, while the third part is weaker and confusing.
  • The film's humor and music are very much of the time period in which it was made.

Intro and Background

Surfi and Paul introduce the film they'll be reviewing, "Digimon: The Movie," chosen by their patrons. Paul expresses his excitement for this "Nostalgia trip," while Surfi admits she's not very familiar with Digimon, seeing it as a Pokémon ripoff. Paul clarifies that Digimon stands for Digital Monsters and highlights differences in character design, noting Digimon's designs are less cute and more "High techy" or "gun orientated". Despite this, he believes Digimon has a stronger storyline and more dramatic tension than Pokémon.

First Impressions and Expectations

Surfi expresses uncertainty about liking Digimon as much as Pokémon, due to the character designs. Paul hopes the film adequately explains the Digimon world to newcomers. He mentions owning the DVD, emphasizing its 90s aesthetic. Reading the back cover, they summarize the plot: a powerful new internet Digimon consumes data, and the digidestined kids must stop it before it causes irreversible damage. Surfi compares the plot to the first Pokémon movie, but Paul hopes Digimon will evoke a different emotional response.

Patreon Shoutout

Paul takes a moment to promote the SP Filmviewers Patreon page. For a small monthly donation, patrons can support the show, receive a shout-out at the end of each episode, and have the opportunity to pick a movie for Paul and Sophie to review.

Initial Thoughts on the Film's Presentation

They discuss the film's '90s vibe, particularly the music, which Paul describes as a "hype song." Surfi notes it feels like a "time trap film" that couldn't be replicated today. They then discuss the short cartoon, Angela Anaconda, that precedes the film. Surfi recalls the show's unique animation style and its place in that era of cartoons. They ponder its inclusion in the film and its potential impact on viewers unfamiliar with the show.

Digimon: A Segmented Film

Paul explains that "Digimon: The Movie" is actually three segmented films put together, two of which were directed by the same person, Mamoru Hosoda. He mentions Hosoda's other works, such as "Wolf Children" and "Belle." Paul expresses his initial enjoyment of the first two segments, which coincide and show character growth. However, he feels the film should have ended after the second part.

Analyzing the First Segment

Surfi notes the main character, Ty, resembles Ash from Pokémon. Paul anticipates accidentally saying "Pokemon" when referring to Digimon. They discuss the "mon" suffix in Digimon names, finding it somewhat lazy. Paul explains the evolution stages of Ty's Digimon, Agumon. Surfi finds the opening scene with Ty and his sister cute, giving it a Studio Ghibli vibe. She appreciates the storyline and plot, which she finds superior to Pokémon.

Comparing the Worlds of Digimon and Pokémon

Surfi questions whether the film adequately explains the Digimon world, comparing it to the coexistence of humans and Pokémon. Paul clarifies that Digimon come from a separate Digital World, making their presence more like an alien encounter. He contrasts this with Pokémon, which are integrated into daily life. Surfi notes that the second film feels more like a video game, as the characters aren't physically present with their Digimon. She finds the Digimon concept confusing, especially with her Pokémon knowledge.

Digimon vs. Pokémon: Character Design and Evolution

Surfi states that if she had to pick between the two, she’d pick Pokémon. She finds Pokémon cuter, more structured, and more coherent in their evolution. She also says that she didn’t realize which Digimon they were. Paul explains that Digimon were initially based on Tamagotchis. Surfi admits she was fully immersed in the beginning of the film, embracing the storyline.

Analyzing the Second Segment

The second segment, set four years later, follows Ty and his sister as they navigate summer vacation and deal with a bug online. Surfi appreciates the portrayal of summer vacation and the millennium bug. Paul highlights the humor in the dub, such as the phone line being busy. He also mentions the music, including the song "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies. The threat of a nuclear missile adds urgency to the situation.

DNA Digivolve and the Internet World

They discuss the concept of DNA Digivolve, where Digimon evolve together. Ty and his friend are drawn into an internet world, reminiscent of "Summer Wars." The Digimon become one, then separate back into their baby versions. Surfi finds this illogical. The segment ends with the bug defeated and the missile stopped.

Analyzing the Third Segment

The third segment shifts focus to a new character, Willis, who has a Digimon egg. Paul notes that Willis was originally meant to be only in the third film, but was included in the first two for the American audience. Surfi admits she doesn't have much attachment to the new characters or story. She finds the third segment weaker, especially since it's directed by someone else.

Digimon Designs and Character Development

Surfi says that the third part was okay, and that the cutest Digimon was in this one. She found it strange that the Digimon spoke, rather than just making noises. She also says that the third part dragged a little bit. Paul says that the third part has been heavily edited, and that the original Digidestined were trapped in a digital world.

New Characters and Rushed Storylines

Surfi says that she wasn’t vibing with the new characters as much. She also says that the last fight scene was crammed in. Paul says that when Pokémon evolve, they still look similar, but that Digimon have very drastic evolutions.

Shrek Reference and Unresolved Questions

Paul mentions the "All Star" song by Smash Mouth, which is also in Shrek. He says that Shrek wasn’t the first film to do that. Surfi says that it’s still Shrek to her, because that’s where it impacted her the most. Paul says that the bit wasn’t meant to be at the end, but partway through. Surfi asks if there are types, and who is stronger than the other. Paul says that there are boundaries, and that the little stagey ones can’t take on the really big ones.

Digimon Lore and Game Comparison

They discuss the Digimon lifecycle, from egg to baby stage, and how they can be reincarnated. Surfi asks if she can feed her Digimon to make it stronger. Paul says that there are many Digimon games, and that they are harder than Pokémon. Surfi asks what the aim of the game is, and Paul says that it varies.

Final Thoughts and Preferences

Surfi asks Paul if he prefers Pokémon or Digimon. Paul says that Pokémon is his first love, and that Digimon is secondary. He also says that the principle of a digital monster is the same aspect, but that it works in the way that it could easily be related to today.

Scores and Final Remarks

Surfi says that she was really invested in the film, but that the third part hinders it massively. She gives it a seven. Paul says that he would have given Pokémon a nine, but gave it a six for being really critical. He gives Digimon a seven. Surfi says that she really enjoyed the first two parts, and that she liked terryon from the third part.

0:12 [Music] hi I'm surfi and I haven't seen a lot of films hi I'm Paul and I'm here to help with that and we are SP film viewers [Music] [Applause] [Music] well I'm very happy with the results of what the patrons have picked this time around was there any point in them even having a b only in the sense of it was the same director who worked on of the the anime of these two films so I

0:58 thought it was only fair and but I thought i' like see what you know like cuz the other one is is a good animator cover but I kind of secretly wanted to talk about this one for a bit of a Nostalgia trip to be honest it's just the same as Pokemon isn't it it's just a ripoff version of Pokemon it's not it's not so it's Digimon if you Digimon the movie and to be fair even my mom was like the other one sounded boring is this one like Pokémon and I went I think well it's yeah I think so Digital Monsters that's what Digimon stands for yeah and I went so yeah it's like pocket monster um yeah so yeah I'm like well I love Pokémon I don't know if I'm going to love Digimon well do you remember they're not as cute so I I

1:44 forget what episode it was but I showed you a picture of one and you were like oh what the hell is that yeah I forget what episode that was now but I forget too but oh was it lady ladyb bird something to do with a ladyb bird yeah and I showed you a picture and you was that with that came me house would kill it whereas I think with Pokémon the reason for my love of it is how adorably cute their character designs and Pokémon style is MHM what I've seen of Digimon is look really weird I've seen you play it before and it's like it's just like the same thing but just a bit more High techy they do like to have some of the designs like gun orientated or yeah like metal spikes or things some

2:30 earthy and down to earth and kind of yeah yeah yeah but I what I will say is in terms of a storyline and dramatic tensions if you want to call it like things you kind of care about with the characters and stuff there Digimon wins in that regard well not really because well I don't know but I'm not attached to any of them so am I going to Care well it' be interesting to see from this as well like as a sort of newcomer into the to this franchise of sorts how well it kind of explains because like say going into the what they tried to do with the the Pokémon movie trying to sort of explain obviously you knew about the Pokémon yes I didn't need that explanation but for somebody who was going into it like not not knowing about it at all is it good enough explaining what the world is about in the Pokemon

3:16 and would and similar will this do the same with you which I I from the I do know this film quite well even though I've not seen it for many many years I don't even have the DVD I've got yeah the fact that you've only got a DVD makes me think H okay so it's not worthy of being on a Blu-ray or you know only only in the um only in Japan they seem to B is it not a Criterion you know and all that no so yeah no theyve got the rights but there's there's interesting stuff that I'll go into once we obviously come back from the film look at the case yeah of course that just screams 90s doesn't it yeah yeah what late 90s yeah yeah oh God it makes me feel old looking at it it's

4:03 all very garish colored and has a bit of a Space Jam kind of coloring to it right I can see that yeah yeah obviously colorful for the for the kids yeah but I'll read you what this says on the back for the story it's not a lot is it along section A little paragraph So it reads is that trying to be Eevee well you'll see in the film when a powerful new internet Digimon hatches begins to consume data at an alarming rate Mewtwo the digidestined kids chosen to save the digital world must put an end to the destruction before the damage becomes irreversible and worldwide communication holds forever as computer-based missiles

4:51 are launched and a wayward Digimon kidnaps the digid Destin only the combined efforts of a worldwide network of kids and a new group of Digi destined can rescue the others and stop Global disaster so it's literally like the Mewtwo being made in a lab he breaks out and they're trying to save the world basically like yeah it's pretty much the same but it's not though it's not the same well no cuz you don't have Pikachu really making you want to cry your eyes out I hope not and if it does I'm not really attached it's like Pikachu is so flipping cute how can you not like when he's going Pikachu and he's crying I'm like sobbing my eyes out yeah well I hope you like it and there like a little catchy theme tune what like Digimon oh

5:38 no no got to catch him all no there's nothing like that no it's completely different cuz G G man no some weird 90s like hip-hop thing yeah you'll see yeah you rather be like cringing or oh Jesus but forward to I think it's weird cuz you've got the Nostalgia so this is going to be highly ranked for you whereas I'm coming in not having any Nostalgia aspects like watching when we I rewatched this one princess whereas looking at it back with an adult head was this is like I don't even have a child reculation of this so it's just a dream I don't know how I'm going to like if I'm going to really like it or not like not mean it's in a

6:24 horrible way the Pokémon film is all right I think fell asleep the first time I watched it yeah probably well you might also be easy to watch anyway because it's it's not subtitled it's dubbed is it obvious yes it's go too much detail at the moment but it's it's basically made translated for Western audience but I'll get into more into that on we finish watching the as long as it don't hinder the watch then that's fine at least it gives me an e no no you probably find it quite funny because I I'm some of the the humor and and it is kind of like yeah so American but it or just just funny just the way it's delivered is I think we've watched Pokemon initially when I watch it was like obviously normally that's how most audiences in the west would have seen it

7:11 so yeah well we we'll we'll see what I think yeah please don't hate me and divorce me if I don't like it I like Pokemon one out of two ain't bad since pretty much the same thing really not but any let's get on with it hello everybody this is Paul from SP film viewers just wanted to do a little shout out to try and plug the patreon yep we've jumped on that bandwagon now you might be wondering what do you get for giving us money well for the low low price of 1 or $150 or wherever the conversion is plus

7:58 V8 you get to show your support for the show you get a nice little shout out at the end of every episode so that everybody who listens get to know what a great person you are and will also include your handles for any of the social media platforms you're on whatever you like basically also once a month you'll get the opportunity to pick a movie for me and Sophie to watch and review so that you really feel like you're getting your value for money and that's it for the time being anyways so head over to patreon.com slsp film viewers get involved and thank you for being part of the community

8:45 [Music] cheers Digimon Digital Monsters Digimon are the champions is that what you're going to do don't be lat it's beautifully sang not really but hype hype song don't you think so '90s I will say that all like early 2000s yeah it was late 90s ear 2000s and it's just like a product of its time yeah yeah it really throughout it is with what the songs it comes through and like what audience is trying to capture at that stage as well uhhuh you understand it's said American

9:30 with yes I feel like this though is like one of those time trap films yeah moment in time can't I don't think it could be done again no but like if some like if we ever had children and we showed it to them I think they'd be like what's with this music or what's with like the way it's drawn like not necessarily the way it's drawn because that can be replicated it can but I think it's it's the way like the the jokes everything it just feels not that it's aged but just 90s trip Nostalgia even though I haven't even encountered that yeah well like initially when we first start we have this short cartoon oh yeah it's the when it came did you you recognize the show I recognize her yeah the character is called Angela Anaconda and that's what

10:16 the show was called I don't think I watched it avidly it wasn't like my favorite one to have it was just on I don't know what network it would have been I feel like it was Nickelodean it looks like a Nickelodeon kind of style or that yeah that yeah one of those shows yeah and she looks like a newspaper kind of black and white body yeah movement animation yeah and then like her fa like her clothes are colorful so that was so that I was it's interesting that that kind of takes up part of the runtime of the film as well which is well is it really a film this well we get into that what like what did you make of that in as initial I liked it yeah I think it worked well did you get in excited and everyone else is really looking forward to seeing this film and you've kind of got these set of cartoon characters that are also so that time period so that's it's like a

11:02 cartoon of like like a Looney Tunes thing where that was be almost like Timeless almost but this is like of that time that that was a show that was I guess quite big but I think it works quite well well actually it made me feel a bit old when I looked at itz like I'm sure I know what that is and then I then you said the name and I was like yeah I remember watching this and then looking at how old it looked MH made me feel quite old I was like oh God but I think there was something I read somewhere on like a some article or something but whether it's true or not it might just be like a madeup forum type thing but apparently somebody said shouldn't laugh but the the it ruined his his life

11:47 because his parents got divorced because of it because they this thing was going like oh I you know was crying cuz I wanted to go see the movie and the the parents were already arguing at this point they took it to the film and then and this came on and then this kid cried because like he doesn't understand why this is supposed to be the Digimon movie oh no and so they argu this this is probably all just a little a Tosh but and but when you you're a child you cling on to that and think oh it was my fault that I went to the digim movie that's why parents broke up it's could be a like yeah rubbish but yeah yeah then you could be arguing with your husband going Why Did You Buck it you've got the wrong tickets cuz I would say that to you CU it would I dig advertised in that it wasn't like a completely like

12:34 random like why is this this short cartoon like say you know I thought it was a trailer or something you know how Pixar would have do their own shorts before and you're not going into there going this is this isn't up or sometimes I prefer him remember that little bird one Piper yeah yeah yeah I love how you knew what it meant oh there was four the birds but that was long time ago no but anyway so like I said with going to this I explain about like the fact how these what these films are because they are three segmented films put together basically so two of them are directed by the same guy who did some awards which we were going to cover this was the against this mhm wolf children Belle

13:22 we've seen I loved Belle I wanted to cover Belle in this animation anime and you were like oh it's too s because we're going to do Digimon instead and I was like and all I want is a plant I you know what screw you I'll do it for my birthday special and uh and Mirai the one that you the one that I got you and then you decided to get a better version you mean yeah yeah this is why now when it becomes your birthday the romance and obviously in our married life has died off because I'm like just give me a list of what you want because when I try and be thoughtful it just backfires and goes oh there's another elusive option or I get really worked up and go what's the difference that one's more expensive should I just buy the more expensive one for whatever reason just because you're

14:07 not sure yeah yeah or I have to ask you billions of questions so I feel like the first two I really enjoy and they do somewhat coincide they do go like oh okay you know four years later mhm but that's fine yeah I don't mind that and then you see him kind of grow and develop and it's the same character is and then that seems to work quite nicely and initially when that one that second part finishes I'm like oh is it is that it is that done and I think for me that's where I feel like this film should end right oh Paul I got so confused on the third part so we'll start off start from the beginning first tackle yeah bit by bit Yeah okay first of all you've got Ty who looks exactly

14:54 like a younger version of ash from he doesn't look and I might slip up in this I apolog olog any Digimon fans I'm probably going to end up saying Pokemon at some point I really know I am how many mons are in this film as well like if you have to take a shot Digimon is it ends with Mon it's very lazy like if you had to make it a drinking game you would be rat assed I don't think it's lazy as such because it some of them like might describe what they are basically I don't even know what any of they are them are so let's say ky ky what's his name the big the dinosaur aumon or Greymon a war gra or whatever so it's the same thing isn't it same thing yes so what's his first one like his his first little stage you mean when

15:41 he comes out of the egg yeah bamon little black blob oh wow I'm impressed okay what's the pink thing with the ears coron coron how and how are they specific to Digimon you mean yeah in what what you mean you said it the evolution line or they have names of oh right okay right well obviously some are more obvious than others like you might say animon meaning like Angel Digimon or Angel monster is that that human one yeah humanoid one yeah which me as well oh I had a gripe about that it's like no say there was I try think of one obviously I think some of them might be obviously like they might be Japanese words anyway like auu like I don't know

16:27 what auu mean specifically it might mean like dinosaur mon I don't know in terms of like what that is but it obviously something monster yeah I think it's just the monster on the end just annoys me like why does it can't we just have them like without the mon on the end just be agu or Coro yeah like Pikachu like Squirtle you don't call it but they're normally combination names call Pikachu monster do you Pikachu mon pamon pikamon squir toon yeah this is annoying I'm not going to lie it's just annoying I didn't really I didn't really all I hear was mon one throughout the film and then this was quite cute when the first start and the Egg appears so it appears through the computer and then somehow

17:13 merges into the real world yeah from Digital World to the real does this overall though I'll just say as a blanket thing does does it kind of explain the world enough or is it a bit still a bit too confusing as to like the concept of it all I don't know if like it's like Pokemon where they live together hard moments but then the first one makes look like that kind of is the case initially like they are living alongside their Digimon in the very first movie yeah right why did you say that though because obviously is coming from a different world the digital world it comes from the digital world but he's still in their room he still their but it's still like an alien life it's like an alien coming down like ET or whatever coming down thing it's like oh that's

17:59 not from our world no I I agree it's not from the same world but they're still not Co coexisting with one of like oh Squirtles helping me water the flowers or anything like that I wish I had a squirt it's not pre-existing in it's not built into that yeah I guess that's what I mean by that that's why Pokemon is different is they are just incorporate they're just like you know cows in the field yeah birds in the sky whatever they're just they're just there they just live in the thing and just happen to coexist with one another it's it's different I guess sort of so it's more of a like a oh like say trying to hide it from your parents or whatever because like they don't understand what like cuz it's like like ET whatever it's an alien it doesn't exist and it's like you know the parents will probably over react and take it away or whatever that kind of thing was

18:46 I do get you but at the same time it's like well it's still living like like kind of like a Pokemon with them even though it's digitally come and it's an alien they're still in the same physical room where the second one alien because of explain it it's not they're not actually I'm trying to get at is the second like the third one they're not even in the same place the third one yeah right we'll get to that later why this is what I'm trying to say is literally at the moment they are literally like me I can physically touch you it's not like it's in a universe where it's somewhere else is what I'm meaning right like kisses her on the face and yes she can feed it and she's you know where it's like the other one where it looks like it's literally they're just playing a game with they're digimons on in a Digital Universe oh

19:32 right okay right I got you because they it's not it's transversion between the two it's yeah they're not techn yeah I okay I kind of understand what you mean now feels feels like more of a video game in that second film yeah because they're not there with them yeah even though there's obviously from the TV show they have gone into the digital world and interacted with them that way but you yeah I guess it doesn't explain that so well I think it's just a bit confusing really it don't really kind of give you the aspect of what it does kind of tell you what Digimon is but from somebody who doesn't know what Digimon is and then you're knowing Pokemon very well you're looking at it thinking it's just going to be somewhat similar and it is but it isn't and I think I struggle with the knowledge of knowing Pokemon

20:18 and then looking at this thinking I don't get some of the aspects yeah so that by that fact it's not the same then you can't say oh did you want to rip off Pokemon because it's a it follows a different formula of how things work it's not no the same so I think the digital monster inspiration of like these little monsters well they're like Tamagotchi basic that's what they were based off of from an initial cont used to love a tamagi so yeah so they would and they made like digital dig and to get bigger when they were fed yeah yeah exactly so that's how that the concept I think if I had to pick between the two I'd definitely go Pokemon anyways mhm just because a they're cuter B it's more structured see the evolution is cohering and well thought out and you don't get

21:04 lost and they still look somewhat similar but just get more badass as they go throughout whereas these ones changed so many times that I actually didn't realize which Digimon they were right so like I were looking and was going blah blah M gymon bled Aon whatever and I'm like what actual Pokemon was this originally Digimon I'm sorry you're just going to have to de with me okay not that I didn't like it I did but I think it's just when you know something so well and you're aware of it and then this is completely new it's hard to get your head around the opening scene though with um with Ty and even though it's spelled is carry yeah that's really cute and it feels

21:49 like a bit of a cute Studio gibly kind of vibe she's really cute and small and she wants to keep the little like Digimon and look after it and it I I was fully emerged I was fully embracing it the storyline for this film is so much more the two parts kind of it it draws you in you want to know you kind of intrigued M it does have a good storyline and plot and that's what it has over Pokemon I think absolutely 100% even like the TV series you feel a lot more there's a lot more development with how the characters are in that and the issue is I feel more attached with the character then I do the actual Digi monster that's where I think it lets it down I'm more character driven by Ty

22:36 Cory then I am like yeah that's I think obviously part of the let down is obviously because you haven't got one you haven't got the Nostalgia of it of from the TV show or any of the concept with like how what they are to those characters anyway from even from when they were at the beginning because it does go it does touch upon this that first film in the TV TV series as well very briefly so it kind of ties in that way to to this film so it wasn't like a you know like um so it's coherent with the story line you know it wasn't like oh this is like in a different universe or timeline or anything like that it was trying to keep it coherent with that and also it's I think well no I think it's I think it's mostly down to I think it's mostly down

23:22 to that really that a lot of the thing where would come from if you know if you didn't know more about how the characters were or or the gimon in the TV series you probably have more of an attachment to a favorite one perhaps or well I did I did get one favorite one which was weird cuz it was like in the third one and I think that helped yeah because the third one I'm not going to lie that went over my head a lot the first two kind of do link together and it's really quite cute and sweet you kind of get the basis of what a digimon is and how it kind of is how the Dig evolve is the evolution method feeding them and helps them grow and giving them love I don't know if that's another thing or if it's more just food and I think you get best friend food helps

24:08 them especially in the younger stages to develop and grow um when he became agamon G Greymon in that one when he was getting attacked by like the Kaiju size parrot yes it gets bigger to protect him yeah yeah that's like a thing like defense like oh you know that's what they do in the TV shows it's like a I've got to say the kids are in trouble I'm going to evolve to get stronger to stop the big threat that's what I have a question does he stay that big then once he's evolved or does he shrink back down no no no that's the so what agum on the smaller orange dinosaur he he was a bigger in this one they did explain in this one actually this which I kind of glanced over when I was younger must have done that's the only thing kind of gleaned from this this time was the fact that they say that he that wasn't the

24:53 same one that they met later on down the line in the TV series CU he was such a lot bigger for some reason I don't know why but I think it's probably maybe just for the story element and make it look like he's a big dinosaur and then he run away so he would stay after coming really big then he'd shrink back to the normal size so there'd always be that that would so like say Pikachu or like I say Charmander go into all the way to Charizard and then it would revert back to being Charmander again if it was if it worked by digimon's Logic so it would stay small so so that's the the difference there as well because so it would always be like a nice friendly thing when like a little pal to hang around with you but then when trouble was a foot it would defend you become big and then once it's all done and

25:40 dusted it would go back to being small again that's quite convenient I quite like that idea but at the same time I'm like well can't you make them cuter like the Digimon aren't as cute as Pokémon designs no look a bit weird in what way don't know just like more teethy and metally yeah that's more the big ones though isn't it not the I'm talking about the when they're like even when they're little they're not I don't know like they've got weird faces right okay sorry sorry so then basically in a nutshell the beginning is basically finding the egg and getting big defeating that moth thing and then it parrot yeah that never they never call it parmon but they that's what it's called later when I found out and then

26:26 that's kind of parrot monster so we go he that's what it is he a big parrot monster and so from that that's how they become what they called the like I think americanism but it's called the digi Destiny I don't know what they call them in Japan but this really this like Digi Digi Des yeah and I was like what's one of these then what what is that a Pokemon trainer what what is that yeah yeah it's equivalent of them love I'm sorry I know we keep going on about Pokemon I know I know there's going to be a lot of that through this the only way I can actually interpretate it because obviously I've come in blind here knowing nothing about Digimon whatsoever MH so this part I think works really well because it's four years later it's still with Tai you see obviously car Cory yeah growing up

27:13 exactly this this follows on from the show basically it's like after the fact there's a couple things that mentioned about how things you know the team split up because there was there's more of them that that you saw in glimpses of the first one where they like looking out the balcony yeah but you you technically wouldn't know that because you haven't seen the show so you know said like look outside your window and like Sora who was got on the crossover between the first two it was like that was one of the other team members from the show and so so when when we going into this story then was it gaging from the start of it or yeah I think it was so Ty kind of swooning over a girl Cory being more kind of a mischievous little like sister yeah sending the email out

28:00 and kind of trying to move on with her life and have her own kind of friends and she's going to a party and then obviously Tai's friends trying to get a hold of him but it just shows what summer vacation is like when everyone's got plans and you don't oh I'm at my grandma's or I'm on holiday or oh trying to get in touch with everybody yeah yeah so it just kind of shows that yeah it works well with the bug online because I think it's kind of showing the old kind of dialog I think yeah and also I think of the you know millennium bug that obviously in the two you remember the 2000s you know when the turn of the Millennium there was the whole worry about the you know the computer virus kind of effect so it's of that time as well so it works yeah and what we thought would be a what would look like a virus like a bug yeah yeah like a

28:49 physical thing eating yeah yeah yeah and I think it worked well with how they interpretated it how they didn't know the internet as as well how slow it was just yeah for us as obviously having dial up and being the 90s kind of 200 yeah like early 2000s yeah it kind of feels like quite apt and real and you can relate quite well to it mhm this works well I think and I don't think it's one that I did I was encaptured I was intrigued I did enjoy it yeah this is the main chunk of the the story are you happy with that answer yeah yeah yeah as we're going through this one like even the first one had like some of Good Humor there's some good humor in the second one as well like the first one has like that ra

29:36 jumps up from that truck you don't see that obviously you don't this is a good thing about the the dub because sometimes the the way they do it they can put these lines over where there's no characters like facing away yeah from so they can just hear the audio so like in that where the the drive truck drive P you don't see anybody in it and this guy do you see that said no sleeping but you're driving it's like those kind of things end also like in the second part where there's a there's a couple of great ones where later on in that in that story which like the phone lines are busy and ties keep ringing up like the lines are still busy and it's like did you hear me it's busy just makes you wonder if that's somebody's Job saying the line's busy yeah yeah it technically shouldn't be

30:24 cuz it should be an automated system but the fact that the is doing it like it is is and that other thing other part where it's like if your phone line is down please contact your phone company yeah cuz those funny little kind of CPS I think as well just with the music how it kind of merges into this you kind of get that at the the first one there's like a good song in your like Oh The Rock Rockefeller stank yeah the funk soul brother yeah yeah and I was like okay americanism of that yeah yeah and then throughout here it's ped through as well and it's more like a yeah my favorite one is that I don't mentioned to this to you but the when the the this second film opens up when it's there one week since you looked at me song yeah I love that so song So Much from from this film

31:10 this the first time I heard it but I really like that song there some good vibe about it I asked my dad to this is again show age put the just that one song on as many times as he could onto like a cassette tape one wait a minute and you RI to me for listening on songs on repeat how many times was that song on there I don't know how many what maybe three four minutes in length song so I don't know how many you could fit onto a cassette side but yeah such a rip of how old would you been well the film came out in 2000 so did you watch it straight did you go to the cinema no no I I seeing it in randomly when we Birmingham visit grandparents one time but and going and see the cinema it was

31:56 until it whatever came out on VHS right did you get it for Christmas I don't know I can't remember feel like you at your grandparents and VHS I'm wondering if you've got it as a gift but I don't know so maybe a couple years later I don't know right but then yeah I don't they yeah even though you always complain when I play the songs on repeat yeah yeah like I say like this the songs in it though are very much of the time and but they're kind of like a like Punky like they really are they always remind me the Blink 182 I don't know why like that kind of vibe it's just like but also weirdly I know all of them even though if heard them yeah in the back of but you if you asked who the band was I wouldn't have a clue like I wouldn't know but all the songs I knew oh okay

32:44 interesting don't underestimate me Paul but the threat in this anyway the ever foding time with a nuul missile yeah stuff and I thinking that's adds a bit of urgency to the the situation mhm really I think that's kind of a even though you you kind of know it's all going to be a at the end it's still I have a question so obviously they go they send the Digimon through into this this this open white space that is like similar to what is in summer worlds was the inspiration for this because it's like he's he'd further developed that into what Summer Wars was and also Belle so right okay but then somehow Ty and his friend get drawn into this intern world yeah somehow I don't know how

33:30 Power of Love or then do the digimons Evolve together did I no no you got that right yeah yeah that was that was like a A New Concept you know like how Pokemon yeah I guess I guess you could say that yeah yeah the equivalent of Mega Revolution or something like that it was later I didn't know at the time because obviously it was like a New Concept and was this meant to be like oh wow yeah it was yeah got a new spin on thing it's called DNA did evolve right and then what happens then they they have to be one or yeah they become two become one like the um Dark Crystal no I wasn't going to say that Spice Girls song two different way I thinking of the end of The Dark

34:18 Crystal and yeah you're thinking of a pop song More simplistic oh thanks Paul I think it just shows what our relationship is there it kind of depicts it in one shot doesn't it so then when he goes to his baby version what is he they'd split back up again they wouldn't be like what a lot of bollocks this is just this is what do you mean load of bollocks you can't just decide oh we're going to be one person and then they like right like right we're glued together and now we're going to separate some it's not literally glued together though is it it's just that he they have Digital Data anyway so they can be what they want basically word digital gets you out of everything but yeah I liked all of it up to the fact until they became like one and they were in there I

35:04 was like okay and then it was like the killed the bug and the missile was kind of stopped and that was it then I was like oh is that the end of the film then it carries on then it goes to present day so the only overarching storyline or whatever you want to call it element that follows through on each one is the fact that this kid Willis has a dig egg as well from the the very first story he has the twins I don't think from what I've sort of gathered from like sort of research for YouTube videos and stuff that he was just meant to just be in the third film he wasn't had have anything to do with the first two they just had to for the purpose of putting this film together for an American audience they had to find a way

35:50 to have him be associated with the other characters in the other two stories so that's why his inclusion of that him like oh this is all my fault with the the virus and stuff yeah to include that so that they can tie it back to this third film where he's he's it's more about him story and you're like kind of aware of him but not and at the same time you're like well Tai is nowhere to be seen or if he is badly there yeah I I admittedly even from because there were kind of there were new characters and the new season was coming out I have much of an attachment to this these characters or this story other than the fact that cry and TK from the the first

36:35 yeah iteration were more grown up and they because they were young in when they first started out and now they're more of what Tai's age was if that makes sense when they started out um so is that but I do think this is the weaker but it's not the same director who did this anyway so it's no that's what I don't get so it's like how can you class it as one film like when I said to you when you literally when we finished watching it you went what did you think and I went I feel like I've watched two different things and you went you kind of have yeah it's it's true that's how it was and I just this part was okay there was the cutest Digimon in this one I don't know it name but the one that looked like a little bunny rabbit yeah it's called teron like a like a ter yeah like a terod dog I didn't think he looked like that he looked like a bunny he call rabbit Monon instead or bunny on

37:20 bunny Monon bunny mon the yeah just say bunny blast is his attack yeah that was weird as well that they spoke I know we haven't oh yeah I found that really strange like instead of just going Pikachu it was like saying the yeah but does that make more of a connection you'd think no not to have like a I think because they spoke they didn't animate their expressions more like on the actual Digimon and know it sounds staffed you like Pikachu's eyes for example because he can't speak he has to be more so like like a silent character like sha the Sheep where you can only do like and it's just like the expression you have to rely on that to tell the story yeah right so with

38:06 Pokemon they have to have the sad eyes or whatever to express what they but you feel like they they didn't do that with the Digimon when they were speaking they excited or when they were speaking but the face wasn't as right if that makes sense the face didn't it kind of match don't much maybe if that's down to animation in this perhaps but a little bit but obviously if some of them are say behind a mask sometimes like like w grman or whatever where they haven't really got a mouth to move is that that big one at the end no no no I'm talking about in the second one just briefly when he's oh or or like I don't know please just don't tell me just don't say names because I'm literally not going to know who they are

38:53 okay I'm not I'm sorry doesn't mean I don't like it the third part I didn't appreciate just felt like it dragged a little bit and I was like I don't understand where the main characters are yeah which is is it's strange because of the fact that this has been heavily edited out and know for that for a fact with with this so there's there's more context to this story which probably in fact would be more beneficial to explain in the story but because of how it's all been of chopped and screwed together they've had to do like very harsh cuts to make sense for like say including Willis in the the overaction story line of everything so because I think like the original Digi Destin were more like trapped in like a

39:40 digital world or something I think from what I've seen on video clips on YouTube and stuff but that's nowhere to be SE could be oh it's too dark too scary for the kids I'll keep it more light and also just the run time got to got to keep it down to under 90 minutes yeah of course you do you do so you know if you didn't con click the an angel Anaconda bit you know three three four minutes you could have had more time to I like that bit though I feel like that that was worthy and I enjoyed that like literally the Angela and aond the first and second brilliant I think it should have just ended there and extended those two because they were really like working you could have done your first part a little bit extra soad of just like the fight which looks like I think

40:25 that's all it was that that the way that it was put together was like that was the director I haven't said this obviously I've mentioned about the films done but mamoru Hoda that was his like directional debut of like a feature film I think but that was only like put in Japan it was only put like a that was that one like 10 what 10 minute film put together as part of like a seasonal collaborative screening with some other films so it wasn't even like you know just a segment in like a film Festival essentially I'd say but I think cuz I enjoyed it so much and the same with the the second one as well and then obviously the third one was it so completely different director on its own it's a shame because I think the first two cuz I enjoyed them so much it would be nice to extend them mhm and get more

41:13 out with it and I think the way that storyline and the the humor I don't think the humor was there in the third one as much either no they tried and the music wasn't there was still some couple of other ones but like but not as like like in it kind of quite mhm and the story line was a bit confusing yeah and because of how it was all cut together but the over story was the virus still got to his which also I know me as a kid we kept calling him cocoon even though he'd evolved many many times it's like that's not he's not it's like yeah yeah would be like just keep it calling the same yeah one so maybe that's I don't know this Simplicity of it to keep it less confusing for kids but at the same time it's like well no because aruman and other ones have Evolutions in you're

42:01 saying those names why are you just referring to this one Digimon is the same is it because he hasn't evolved no no because because he was virus so he doesn't see it as his I don't know be because he call terryon when he evolves still terryon is like well no you said his name when he evolves terryon has said that you know teron did evolve too gagon when he's yeah with the guns and everything but it but then you said they shrink back anyway so wouldn't you call them that first version anyway I know but you still refer to them as even when they were bigger yeah yeah well I think that's a bit confusing like why do I have to learn three names going to revert back unless unless she just nicknamed yeah I would go Fred whatever yeah and then it doesn't matter what you actual species is

42:50 yeah and so the yeah the virus has attacked his one of the his his 200 gon as a baby and when you say the twin digimons this has confused me because I asked you and I said oh they're the same and you went not quite and I like like I don't I know you can have identical twins and you can have ones that are not so identical but at the same time these just don't look the same whatsoever well no well when you say a twin egg what does that mean like they just both arrived at the same time is that what you're meaning well um it was Pro I didn't really show them hatching out of the egg at the same time though but like were they in the same egg or were they like two eggs appeared no he Willis explain that that they did hatch from

43:35 the same egg so they were twins right but they were different yeah not identical twins still similar some of them but you just said they weren't similar no no but I mean twins normally still are similar even they're not identical they're still similar which these weren't she has a cute little bunny War you could say that about like in ref into Pokémon here you have the Nidan male Nidan female they're different that's the same species but yeah but that's like a man and a woman yeah but you could still have are these actually gender Pacific the these no no oh um good question I think theoretically yes they they you would show asso but they don't specifically

44:21 say I'm you can just tell by the voices I guess that like in a game like do you get to know like oh I want a girl version of like you doing Pokémon no I don't think that even that it's is determined by that I think certain ones just have more of a feminine look on them but you would just associate them that they are female species right that's what I'm saying about that so there there's no this Digimon stuff hurts my head what did you think of the other characters then the new ones that are introducing the second one that the other did not vibing with them as much no cuz like I'm trying to remember them and AP from obviously like you said the two that were already kind of we saw the agage

45:08 yeah the rest were like I don't know getting to a point of where I'm like there's so many more Digimon there's new characters I've only just started you know I've had probably like an hour of these characters and now they've disappeared prior and I've got this whole new thing that I'm like learning again halfway through film where you don't really feel like he should have that normally through a film yeah I get what you're saying Willis obviously was your new tie which who just seemed a bit feeble and like oh no stay away from me and he's like people are trying to help you just stop bitching and moaning get some friends you losing so I think that's our fell and I can't remember the others we got Davis who's like the one who kind of looks like Ty she says at the beginning of that introduction to them all Cody is the other one the one

45:55 with like the sort of like shorter hair skin head and Yoli is the the the glasses and the the Hat yeah yeah it's all right yeah I didn't I wasn't attached it's very it's very it's very rushed I'll say soe the the the last fight scene when go through all all that it's kind of like just crammed in just to evolve evolve and then oh then then it's becomes big again and head it was like I don't know who's what now and what's what and all of this it was just a bit like I feel like with Pokemon they still have similar when they evolve they look kind yeah you can see where some of them look yeah where some of them when they've evolved in Digimon it I could say the very drastic

46:42 ones like you say like we had we mentioned before about animon and and woman where they're like what are they from it's like that's Paton which is like little brown mouse with the wings and Gaton which is the cat like I couldn't tell you what what the inspiration why a cat turns into a like a angel I don't know I wondered if it's the logic of well if it's made in Japan they treat cats like God or if it's a case of you know recarnation where you're a cat and then you die and then your spirit goes to heaven and then you become a human and all that logic of like you start off as I don't know I'm trying to give it more credit than it probably there's probably there's probably there is the probably a reason

47:28 a design Choice reason I just like the fact that they were humans and I know it sounds really really bad I know you're saying the Angels mhm but they're not a mon are they not moner they're not a monster that's just how it is C CAU your tongue there other than the fact that they are not monstering like a hideous way or a scary way or anything like that they're just they're just big but they're still human humanoid because they're kind of like mythical cuz you could say like if it was human like part human part monster i' agree more like a part human body what's it and then a horse Centaur yeah then yeah fair enough that as a

48:13 monster would you class like Pegasus as a monster you know from Hercules more a mythical creature yeah but still creature monster yeah works the same way I guess but it's still pegas is a horse there's a pegasus mon anyway yeah it's fine right are we going to a scores or is there anything else that we can give value add to this only a couple of things CU I know you said like the very last song we heard mhm which was oh it was with Shrek song Love how he smirking at me allar yeah Shrek uh well it's no it wasn't it wasn't the very first

49:00 film to do that to to include that in like why this one was before well I thought it I thought it was actually but there was actually a couple of other films that did it even before that cuz Shrek was 2001 which I when I I looked at thinking really was it really that that makes me feel really old cuz I thought it was like really big in like school when we were like 2003 or something but I thinking prob me now that's older than I thought it was but there was a couple of films in 1999 that did it which I don't have you you've seen Inspector Gadget the the live the live action one with Matthew brri I think I have apparently it's in that one but I know it I know it's in another film called Mystery Men which is a Ben Stiller I would seen that film

49:46 that was like Ben Stiller is a little bit like myad and Sandler not as bad but still yeah I know it was that that but yeah like a training montage well it doesn't matter it's still Shrek to me because that where it impacted me the most yeah yeah cuz I think that's a long feature whereas this was just like a quick sting at the end yeah which which is very like confusing because I think from what I've gathered also from the internet that that bit wasn't meant to be at the end that was like partway through when he's getting angry in that whole fight sequence bit or something because he's like doing that sweating thing it's like I don't even know why that was even put in but yeah strange but I liked it cuz it Shrek made me smile anyways I was kind of glad the film was

50:32 ending at that point yeah and you were like what that's it that's the end yeah is abrupt yeah even though earlier on I thought we'd ended and he was like oh present time and I was like no I think that's where I would end this film now anyways if I wanted to watch it again I just have an Hour film yeah no you're probably right is there any other burning questions about the law or well I asked you this they're not even like a type or like who's stronger than other like apart from being bigger did explain that because it's like it's not like P2 is like so overpowered that he can beat what seemingly should not like in terms of the game stats and everything he there's no way he would be able to really beat that without getting his ass

51:17 beaten but in this they are there's like boundaries of like the little stagey ones can't take on the really big because that's like rookie Champion ultimate and mega which is what war greyman was right you know evu for stage Mega is like the top tier and they evolve even if the vet more Oh you mean when they come out the egg yeah that's like what they um in train b a baby when they come out of the egg obviously and then so they all come out like the little black spook yeah yeah yeah they come out of not all the same they can be there's VAR different types but they'll come out of an egg they born from an egg are they different colors the eggs are different colors all the creatures inside them creatures inside yeah

52:02 they're all different colors yeah yeah they can be different like little dust balls in some in some form yeah they'll be a very simplistic little blob of some kind CU like the one at the beginning evolved like three times didn't it yeah toramon Agumon Greymon and then it's got its gry waron or whatever it is well gry man yeah we did that super fast like super level up all the way basically just to so it went from it you said it goes to its baby stage but it went to its like second stage and stayed as that pink kissy face thing mhm so why didn't we back to Well in that one because of how it worked with the the story of just you know fighting the parmon and then just disappearing back to the digital

52:47 world and that's where like you didn't see it again yeah okay but normally it would just go either go back to that's another thing it depends how much energy they use to how far they go back to what stage they go back to basically but no further than the little baby stage Agumon stage yeah not the little dust ball no not the very very small unless they've had to be reincarnated which is them if they don't die how do you like a Pokemon you they faint do they they just they just rest just like a if they if they oh if they faint can they faint I don't I don't know I mean um wa how to explain it because if they're like defeated defeated they kind of the data just gets broken up and then they become

53:34 go back to being an egg so they re they get reincarnated his an egg so they' be a baby version of what they start still be the same person yeah yeah yeah they do they they explain that the show yeah yeah it's not like I don't know who you are anymore kind yeah it's like a whole new eggs just being generated it's the same it's the same yeah if you've got that bond with them of course yeah so like if my Digimon was like weak could I feed it something to make it yeah yeah and strengthen open yeah yeah make it better yeah just like us we need fuel right food and drink to make us feel better energized yeah it's like the sausage Korean Pokémon yeah whatever yeah or any food yeah they're not too picky with what they eat to be honest okay how many games is there Digimon um

54:22 I don't know cuz I there's so many like only Japan exclusive things really I've played a few of the games are they harder yeah there a lot some of them like the other ones on the PlayStation one ones are like really difficult they're pretty unforgiving really in um how they they're structured and fairness so yeah quite a lot more challenging than what Pokemon but could you compare that to like early stage Pokemon and say no no I'm talking no it's it's a different format of how it works anyway so it's what would be the aim of the game to catch them all it it varies depends on it's not like because not mean it's in a horrible way Pokemon is the same thing has a s same formula yeah yeah it's like you're catching every Pokemon just got a different scene

55:07 different Pokemon yeah and yeah mhm yeah there's different again there something different but in a good way that Digimon does so Paul final question mhm do you prefer Pokemon or Digimon I hope I know the answer because if not I'll be wondering why the hell we had a Pokémon wedding your Pokémon the first love in terms of like a a franchise that I really jelled with cuz it came it did come before Digimon clearly Digimon secondary I think digimon's got the idea from Pokemon and then adapted it and changed it I still think the principle of the Baseline of a digital monster or a monster like a pocket monster small monster is the same aspect but it works

55:53 in the way that it could easily be relate to to just as much today as anything like we all have computers even more so than we did back then and there could be things that that Liv in your phone and whatever and you know like you think the theen reminds me of that um what what did we watch made you cry the grams or the Mitchells versus Mach yeah gram don't know why grams came into head I love how you just know exactly what I'm mean even though I say the complete opposite I know on the same wavelength you talk Sophie language that's what it is it's a special language that people have to learn to communicate with me

56:38 it's not always the case sometimes you do have to be like no please explain what do you mean but more often than that I do know what you're on about it's a good job isn't it that's why we're married right I think go to score them I we've talked long enough I think we have yeah about this which is kind of Str strange but I kind of been interesting talk i' say yeah it's hit my head a little bit I think I eventually started to say Digimon halfway through did well done thank you it's hard because don't worry I won't take it too much to on on this one I felt like initially when I started watching it I was really really invested I was really enjoying it and I was like oh this is so good and it's really nice and it's sweet and it's work really well

57:27 and I think the third part really hinders it massively and that's a shame because that spoils the first two parts yep obviously looking back at what I've scored previous ones within this I feel like I want to be fair and true to those as well yeah yeah no so I think for me it'll be a seven I don't think that's a low score initially before we got to part three it was going to be like an eight all right okay so yeah that just shows like what okay that part did I really enjoyed the first two despite all what you've been confusion with everything but yeah yeah but the third one was just a bit like no I I I completely understand and sort of sort of agree with you it's a

58:12 bit of a shame yeah and obviously like reviewing previous films we've done I've done like 7.5 and I feel like I can't really kind of score this higher than them no because it is more Co they're more coherent they're beautifully don't mhm and it' just be unfair for me to score it any higher doesn't mean that I think it's rubbish and I don't like it I think it just is a bit of a let down at the end okay that's fine before I go to my score though I another question for you so based off what you've kind of just said about like those two story lines does this make you more interested in like seeing more of like understanding of what the show is about yeah you'd be interested in like I seeing more about

58:58 the characters to get more involved in like their back story the first two Char like the first the first group yeah I think the third this the one in the third part not so attached to but i' I'd say from the second in certainly the TV show there's more involvement with them they are more present in that but it's obviously more about the New Kids on the Block essentially and their story but they are still sort of heavily involved with it but yeah definitely okay that's fine it's good to know Paul's like yay yeah it's good to know for my score and I did look back on like what we kind of gave Pokemon first movie What did I give Pokemon first movie you gave it an eight okay good

59:43 good good good well it's Pikachu it's I know it is more attention yeah Pikachu he near cry and I gave I gave it I to give it a nine but I 10 PA but um I was I gave it six for being if it was being really critical obviously the nine was really Nostalgia for that one now this time I was I was thinking about this and that I was going to do the same sort of thing for this but I think I'll just stick with like a combination of the two and go for the Nostalgia trip and the critical side of yes the third one is the weakest part and it's not much care for it and I just wish it was more

1:00:28 developed so I'm going to put it at seven woo that's the same yeah yay so I really wasn't sure like when you go into this you thinking oh this is is going to be low based off the not having the Nostalgia or anything like that but no cuz initially the first two I really enjoyed initially as well with K Cori or Carri or whatever her name is narrating it all yeah yeah her voice so which she's cute and you kind of see her grow and develop as a character you know me big fan of that MH yeah no that's that's all right then thank you patrons yeah know thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to sort of talk about can tell who they side with clearly this

1:01:13 yeah it's been a lot fun to and obviously it was like a a blast from the past from let's those some of those songs and the the the memories of like seeing that for the first time or multiple times after that but having like a just does all like those jokes and like the ties mom like making those like really disgusting spinach cookies and beef jerky shakes and yeah the gag of that being like Izzy who's one of the other characters like drinking in L's he really likes it and then oh it's unsettle into the stomach that kind of funny stuff like that it's really really works and it's the the just the some of the humor in it is yeah yeah overall just not the the third

1:01:59 one unfortunately it doesn't do so well but at least you you say you liked terryon from that he like your Pikachu I guess yeah y yeah cute he like why do we have to end this fighting yeah I was like oh my God that's Pikachu you could talk yeah yeah yeah but hear about the controversy with that I think from that when they did that reiteration of Ash meeting Pikachu in that film where Pikachu spoke and and everyone was like what no Pikachu shouldn't sound like that so that's if they started doing something like that now there's no way cuz you have something in your head clearly of like what it would sound like if Pokemon were doing that you'd find it bit weird yeah from the start I found it weird initially because I just assumed it were like Pokémon and when they

1:02:45 started talking I like what they don't talk they're like pets they don't speak or if they do they have their own language M yeah like I would agreed with that like they have their own language they can speak and then you hear that voice but then humans hear them as like whatever a different sound abely yeah right well thank you very much for listening to this episode and thank you to the patreons once again before we get on to the patreon segment we'd like to ask you to go and check out some of our other episodes over on Apple podcasts Spotify podbean and wherever else you get your podcasts from and also like rate US five stars on any of those platforms now over to
