It covers the necessary supplies, proper pen angle, and step-by-step instructions for forming lowercase and uppercase letters. The video emphasizes the importance of mastering basic strokes and letterforms before adding embellishments.

  • Proper pen angle is crucial for achieving the characteristic thick and thin strokes of italic calligraphy.
  • Mastering basic letterforms is essential before adding flourishes and embellishments.
  • Practice and patience are key to developing proficiency in italic calligraphy.

What is Italic Hand

The video introduces italic calligraphy as a standard and classic style that is both elegant and versatile. It is presented as a style that can be self-taught and combined with other calligraphy styles. The instructor uses layout bond paper, along with a guide sheet, and Higgins Eternal ink for the demonstration. Reference materials, such as the Speedball textbook and "Lettering and Calligraphy Workbook," are recommended for practice. If books are unavailable, online resources for italic alphabets can be used as references.

Supplies and tools

The instructor uses layout bond paper, along with a guide sheet. Also, Higgins Eternal ink for the demonstration. Reference materials, such as the Speedball textbook and "Lettering and Calligraphy Workbook," are recommended for practice. If books are unavailable, online resources for italic alphabets can be used as references.

About the pen angle

For italic calligraphy, the pen should be held at a 30 to 45-degree angle. To find the correct angle, imagine dividing a 90-degree angle in half to approximate 45 degrees. Practice creating thin lines at this angle, combining them with straight downstrokes at a slight slant (e.g., 5 degrees). Mastering these basic strokes is essential before moving on to writing full letters. The nature of the pen automatically produces two strokes depending on the direction, making italic calligraphy beginner-friendly.

Lowercase a-i

The instructor demonstrates how to write lowercase letters from a to i. For the letter "a," the horizontal top bar is created first, followed by the downstroke. The letter "b" involves a straight downstroke with a curve, which can be done in one or two strokes. Variations for "d" include adding a small roof. The letter "e" is similar to "c" but with an enclosed counter. Simple and clean forms are shown for "f," with an optional swash. The letter "g" is like "a" with a downstroke and swash, and "h" can have a small loop. The letter "i" is completed with a diamond-shaped dot.

Lowercase j-r

The instructor continues demonstrating lowercase letters, starting with "j," which is an extension of "i." Several variations of "k" are shown, including a clean version and one with a loop. The letter "l" is a simple stroke, while "m" is formed with two arches. The letter "n" is similar to one arch of the "m." The letter "o" is created with a rounded stroke, and "p" can be simple or have an over-the-top stroke. The letter "q" is similar to "a" with an added line, and "r" resembles an "i" with a small tail.

Lowercase s-z

The instructor proceeds with the remaining lowercase letters. The letter "s" is described as challenging, involving a squiggly line with additions at the top and bottom. The letter "t" can have the top part filled in. Simple forms of "u" and "v" are shown, with "w" being a double "v." Variations of "w" include a "magic W." The letter "x" can be formed with two back-to-back "c" shapes. The letter "y" can be done in a new style or freestyle, similar to "g." Finally, "z" is created with a crossbar.

Uppercase A-I

The height of capital letters is typically between seven and a half nib widths high, slightly below the ascender line. The pen should be held more flat, around a 20-degree angle. Capital letters consist of many straight lines, requiring a steady hand. The basic forms are demonstrated without embellishments. Letters like B, D, P, and R, which have larger curves, are more challenging.

Uppercase J-R

The instructor continues with uppercase letters, noting that "K," "L," "M," and "N" involve straight lines. The letter "N" is considered one of the hardest due to its need for symmetry. The letter "O" is difficult because it needs to appear slanted and well-rounded. The letter "P" can easily look like it's tipping over if the top is too thick. The letter "Q" is like "O" with a tail, and "R" resembles a "P" with a leg that is hard to get right.

Uppercase S-Z

The instructor concludes with the remaining uppercase letters. The letter "S" is less curvy than its lowercase counterpart. The letters "T" and "U" are relatively simple, involving straight lines. The letters "V," "W," "X," "Y," and "Z" are then demonstrated to complete the alphabet. The instructor encourages viewers to try italic calligraphy and to add flourishes once they are comfortable with the basic letterforms.

0:00 [Music] hi everyone this is Vivian welcome back to my channel today I'm going to do some Italian practice in the previous video I show you how to make your own guide sheet and explain some of the materials that you'll need to practice Italian so today I'm actually going to show you how to practice Italian this is a very standard and classic style in calligraphy and you can totally teach yourself this style it's very elegant and versatile that appears well with many other types of calligraphy into this video I'm going to use layout bound on paper and also I have taped together a couple sheet of large size paper just to give it a little pushing and I have

0:46 taped my this is the layout bound paper and also I have the dry she underneath so I will show you how to make this guy sheet by hand and also in Illustrator in the last video and this is exactly that that one that I made and also I have extra sheet of paper that's a guard in case I have ink on my hand you know I won't get my writing paper dirty and I'll be using brows number two nibs and also in the previous video I also show you how to choose nib and prepare your net so don't forget to check that video out and I'm also going to be using the Hingis eternal ink for today's practice and for reference you can find any calligraphy books that have the style that you want to practice this one is speedball textbook I talked about this

1:31 book quite a lot in many of my videos and he just has a lot of different styles so it's a quick reference guide but actually today I'm going to be using this one this one is called lettering and calligraphy workbook it's also a book that has tons of information in history about calligraphy so I'll be using the model sheet on this book today if you don't have any calligraphy book you can just go online and search for italic logo fee alphabet and you'll find something similar that you can use as a reference to practice so for italic calligraphy you want to hold your pen at a forty five to thirty degree angle and that means if we are holding our pen we want to draw the sinner's pass line it up 30 to 45 degree angle and if you imagine this is 90 degree then kind

2:17 of divided in half that would be this should be about 45 degrees so somewhere between here and maybe here so this is just a quick way to figure out what angle you're holding your pen and so first we want to do some practice of just having a thinnest line at a 45 degree angle and then try to combine that with a straight down angle either at the slant that you choose in my case it's a 5 degree slant [Music]

3:04 once you can comfortably produce the thin and the thick stroke then we can start writing pulls there a lot more other drills and basic struggle you can practice but this video I want to just show you how to write the alphabet so what I like about italic little fee is that just by the nature of this pen you're already producing 2 stroke depending on which direction right that's why I think I tell dick it's a very beginner friendly style to learn so let's start with a and our guy she the first stroke is a Down stroke but actually for me I like to do the top bar first I am rebellious so that will be a and

3:51 for some reason if I do the down stroke first it would just I don't know where this upstroke is supposed to end up to so I always end up little too wide so I I just like to do this horizontal one first and then to the second stroke instead of the first stroke so there is a a and for B we want a little series and just straight down stroke in the slant so I did that in one stroke but you can also do this in two separate stroke so that would be second stroke and further stroke then you can also write it this way

4:41 or you can put a little roof on top of the D and for C or how I actually do is this and D will be kind of like an a except we have a longer down stroke you can also do it without the little roof I don't especially now colu I'm just making up names and he will be similar to a C except it has a counter it's a little enclosed part and a simple F will

5:28 be just straight very clean F and we can add a little swash to it that could be an F and G will be like an a but now understand we're adding the down stroke and a Down swash you like to ask you can make it a little bit more curvy if you want [Music] that could be a gene another way to write the gene is like this one and you'd be like an old school not old school this is classic not a school and she liked this input page

6:17 [Music] we can do the same thing like we have for the beam you can have the age with a little and then for I just really this dot it's just like a little diamond shape on top and J will be like an extension of the eye and ass combine it's a little crooked so this one's a little better if okay there are several way to do okay we can have a very clean

7:02 one or second way to do a cake and have a little loop there and with all these ascenders you can have the cave now as it's not cool but I can remember what's going on and then it's ill and then there's two and people we do in so that's an end and once you can do it in you can do it [Music]

7:56 and then this don't all this simple P will be something like this or you can do a pan with a little bit over a town [Music] and you just similar to writing a and to make it look finish we can add a little like a line and or you can do it over to your arm

8:43 it'll be kind of like an eye and a little little till dossing is probably the most challenging one in this style so it's a little squiggly and then adding the bottom and the top and then now we have T sometimes I also like to have a king to have this part to be filled up you could be like putting two I together [Music]

9:31 and for me that could be a simple mean you can do a V like this as well and if you double that beat and give you double V that would be a double so here we have a W you can also do it without this little service [Music] that's a very clean double you can also do something call this little magic W

10:17 that's another way to write W and then X oops [Music] little crooked let's try that again X you can also do X like so I play the to see I'm facing each other back to back facing each other back to back that doesn't make sense of back-to-back see just back to back and we have y so you can do the Y like a new style you can do

11:05 it in free style and similar to the gene you can have it a little more coding and I see we have the scene you put a little cross bar so it looks of all right Izzy [Music] sometimes you can do it right then Nancy you're insane so for capital letter the height the height of the letter is not gonna be as tall as the ascenders usually it's between seven and a half nipple is high so if you know in previous video we mentioned that an x height is five nib

11:51 so let's just add two more names to and then so it just being a little bit below the center line we have and for a capital letter you are actually holding your pen more flat so that would be about 20 so imagine if so if this is if this is 45 we wanted to hold it around 20 I'm guessing this 20 so for a toe cap a letter is tricky that it's consist a lot of straight line so in the first you need to have very steady hand [Music] and these are the basic form so they don't look all that fancy but it's good to practice the basic form before you

12:38 add any swashes and also for capital letter there's a lot of a bigger curve like in B D P R and those are usually the challenging one so like this C is a little too squished so let's try again yeah it's a little better [Music] so these are very very stripped down there's no swash no embellishment the ones we get these warm down later on when we want to endorse them it will be

13:26 a lot more easier [Music] nice to L now it's just two straight line I like to do a little hairline to finish and I will say and it's probably

14:12 the hardest letter the hardest couple away it's just as a lot of straight lines and suppose be symmetrical but not really so your name looks sort of okay and it's not that he's either so all of these capital letters it looks very simple but it's actually very hard and then oh oh it's hard for different reasons and you need to have it you need to have it looks lent it goes around it's just very tricky and P it's tricky

15:03 because if you get it a little too thick on top it will look like it's going to tip over and Q here we go again like the oil so we're adding a little piggy tail to it and it R looks like a ping even though it has a vague to it but that Lake is it's not that easy to make it look right and as a couple of us is not as curvy as lower caste : KS t should be relatively

15:53 simple to straight line and if right here now it's just you're just doing a little okay so if they have take her size so this mu and then kid twice somewhat to lift up you [Music]

16:41 I hope you'll give I tell they can't a try they might look quite basic for now but once you get a hang of the letter form you can start dressing them up with slashes and flourishes and they do have potential to become very fancy if you find this video helpful don't forget to give it a thumbs up and consider subscribe I'll see you next time bye [Music]
