MUSIC DIRECTOR REACTS | Advent: One-Winged Angel - Final Fantasy VII

Brief Summary

Drumroll Tony reacts to and analyzes "One-Winged Angel" from Smash Ultimate, praising its intricate orchestration, dynamic use, and impressive arrangement. He highlights the contrast between the orchestral sections and the heavier, rock-influenced parts, ultimately favoring the former for its complexity and the demands it places on the musicians.

  • The intro orchestral section is praised for its use of muted trumpet, clarinets/flutes, and rhythmic establishment by the timpani player.
  • The return of motifs with horns and the choir's ominous sound, enhanced by tubular bells, are noted as highlights.
  • The piece transitions into a rock section, which, while enjoyable, is considered less intricate than the orchestral parts.
  • The dynamic use and chord swells in a later orchestral section are commended, showcasing the composer's skill.

Intro and Initial Impressions

Drumroll Tony introduces the video, which features him reacting to "One-Winged Angel" from Smash Ultimate, a choice determined by a Patreon vote. He expresses his excitement to listen and analyze the piece.

Orchestral Opening

Tony is immediately impressed by the orchestral arrangement, particularly the use of muted trumpet and woodwinds, supported by the timpani's rhythmic foundation. He appreciates the cool orchestrations and arrangements involving brass, woodwinds, and strings.

Motif Returns and Ominous Choir

The return of specific motifs played by the horns catches Tony's attention. He also notes the powerful sound of the choir, enhanced by the use of tubular bells, creating an amazing combination.

Harmonic Weaving and Percussion

Tony observes the weaving harmonies and the use of timpani and snare drums. He also points out how the woodwinds play with something very similar to bring the next section. He expresses his appreciation for the percussion elements, including the aggressive timpani, snare drum, and various other percussion instruments.

Transition and Tango-like Melody

Tony describes a section where the melody, devoid of the drum's influence, briefly evokes a tango-like feel. He notes the anticipation built by the bass player. However, he finds the symbol level and guitar to be dominant in the mix, making it difficult to hear the other underlying elements.

Rock Section Introduction

Tony identifies a clear shift into a "butt rock" style, contrasting with the earlier orchestral sections. While the choir maintains its grand, legato style, the drums alter the feel significantly. He admits a preference for the intricate nature of the first section over this one.

Duple Rhythm and Shredding

He describes the section as having a duple rhythm and being very "in your face." He notes the sound traveling from left to right and the presence of shredding guitar, but acknowledges that the sound is dominant in the mix.

Dynamic Orchestral Section

Tony considers this section the most impressive part of the piece due to the demands it places on the musicians. He highlights the dynamic use, noting the swelling chords and well-written arrangement. He also points out a decrescendo that he missed on the first listen.

Guitar and Trumpet Lead

Tony jokes about the similarity between guitar players and lead trumpets. He reiterates his preference for the orchestral sections, praising their interesting and well-crafted arrangements. While he finds the heavier guitar and drum sections cool, he is more fascinated by the arrangement of musical ideas in the orchestral parts.

Final Thoughts and Outro

Tony expresses his satisfaction with the chosen piece and hopes the audience enjoyed the reaction. He encourages viewers to check out his Twitch channel and Discord, and thanks them for watching.

0:00 this video was decided by a vote in patreon our options were Tekken 3 Diablo 2 and the winner Advent One Winged Angel from Smash ultimate hello and welcome in my name is drumroll Tony I'm streamer on Twitch musician and music teacher living in Seattle I like the patreon vote videos these are fun all right I'm excited let's get into it [Music] [Applause] Stravinsky is that you foreign [Music]

0:47 that's amazing [Music] wow that that long phrase the muted trumpet and then the clarinet or flutes whatever the Woodman's come up below it uh that was super nice the way that was supported back 10. foreign [Music]

1:39 that was super fun uh and the obvious shout out Tiffany player giving us the constant Rhythm establishing tonal Center so we can have all those cool orchestrations those arrangements of immediate brass regular brass Woodman stuff and string stuff that was going on this has been awesome so far we're only 40 seconds in back five foreign [Music]

2:29 wow uh so the return of that motifs came in there with the horns and then I feel like we're outlining that Motif but super slow all the notes from that I might not be totally accurate on that but it felt that way though so if it's implied I feel like it's still that's probably what it's meant to be uh back five let's keep going here obviously we're shredding on guitar too but you know the other stuff is cool [Music] oh [Music]

3:15 man this choir sounds so big anytime you have the big the big ominous uh huge venue sound and then with tubular Chimes uh Tubular Bells that's amazing amazing combo back leave my way home [Music] okay [Music] nice yeah these kind of these harmonies are

4:02 kind of weaving in and out I also like how we have big timpani use and now more snare drum stuff going on I just need to listen to this harmonies a little bit closer in about 10 seconds foreign [Music] it's a cool way to use the voice and then have basically the woodwind players play with something very similar to bring us into this next section that's very nice back five [Music] foreign [Music]

5:05 setting you're playing in concert band Orchestra and like you're back there you know playing these snare drum interesting symbols or concert bass drum you know it's not that exciting of a part but this there's something there's a lot going on we have very aggressive Tiffany playing Fun snare drum stuff lots of we hear some Mountain percussion too I'd love to play Chimes on this one this is cool so you got to look out for those percussion players they're going back 10 so we can get this transition [Music] foreign [Music]

6:00 all right it almost felt like a tank take away what the drums were doing but just the melody itself no construction stylistic approach it almost felt like a Tango for a second but you would have to require a very very different um Rhythm Section approach underneath but it just it just brought me there a little bit that was pretty cool though [Music] foreign [Music]

6:49 a lot of anticipation built there so the bass player got to dig in a little bit there that was pretty cool but I will say the symbol level like the Hyatt level and the guitar is so dominant on top of the mix I was really having to like listen down to try to hear everything else that was going on it was pretty thick and sound I'm gonna go back 15 just to try to grab a little bit more but uh it's pretty disguised underneath all that foreign [Music] yeah I didn't catch the little woodwind lick there that went into that brass Crescendo that's pretty cool I mean it's not like impossible to hear it's just like it's super it's muddy though all right next section transition here back

7:35 five [Music] foreign [Music] I feel like it's a pretty obvious difference between like the first section in this section we're just straight butt Rock now dude and but the choir that like style is

8:22 still there it's still big and Legato and kind of open and flowy but underneath the drum has completely changed the uh I guess the feel and the way you're gonna interpret all that um I really like the first section this section was like okay cool yeah we get it but that first section was pretty intricate foreign [Music]

9:09 okay there you go that was cool because we had like like low Med Square women's choir don't do a bob but the last one was like boom boom uh I felt like there was a like on the end of four and whatever wherever the groove was lying uh might be wrong let's go back and see uh let's go back 10 seconds and try to grab that [Music]

10:08 okay that's that's pretty cool I mean I feel like we there's not much to break down here it's pretty it's good it's a duple Rhythm it's in your face I guess the cool part is it kind of was traveling from like left side to right side and we have some like shredding going on but uh definitely the dominant sound pretty much everywhere in the mix right here we'll backfire [Music] foreign [Music] yes [Music] [Applause]

10:54 okay that was to me that's the most impressive part of uh this piece so far the loud like thrashy stuff is cool but if you want to actually talk about what's on the page and the demand of all the players like that is really good stuff let's go back 5 10 15. let's see not far enough yeah some great you know more male percussion there and uh I would say the second listen the second time listening to this section listen to all the dynamic use we can hear all these chords swelling and stuff very very written very well [Music] oh God did hear that that day Crescendo all the way down between her

11:40 very very cool I missed that Dickerson of the first time [Music] it's so good [Music] Melody [Music] what a [Music] relationships grab that again

12:27 [Music] foreign [Music] got a hangover guitar players and Lead

13:13 trumpets it's all in the same man you all y'all play the same way that was cool uh the middle section it was cool but the book ends for me the front orchestral section and the back orchestral section super super interesting great arrangement I do not know who the composer is if you do let me know in the comments but uh for me that's like the fascinating stuff when we get to like the chunky guitar and just like laying it down in the drums like blasphemy and stuff like that's cool but if you want to actually think about you know someone arranging a bunch of musical ideas out that's the other stuff that's just amazing so very cool I'm glad that one uh won the vote of course I have no clue what the other ones sound like but I don't know I had a great time hopefully you did too my name is drumroll Tony I'm a streamer on Twitch make sure to catch me live so we talk about your favorite video game music you can find the link to my twitch channel in the video description below as well as a Discord if you'd like to
