How to Speak Faster Without Losing Clarity! (3 Drills)

Brief Summary

This video explains why mastering rate of speech is crucial for effective communication and provides practical exercises to improve it. It highlights the importance of being able to speak both quickly and clearly, adapting to the fast-paced consumption of content in today's world. The video introduces three key exercises: tongue twisters, free-flow speaking, and reading with a pencil in your mouth, to develop the necessary muscle strength and coordination for varied and engaging speech.

  • Rate of speech is a controllable skill, not a fixed trait.
  • Speaking quickly and clearly is essential for engaging modern audiences.
  • Three exercises can significantly improve rate of speech and articulation.

Intro

The video starts by highlighting a common scenario where someone's speech either causes others to lose interest or struggles to keep up. It challenges the misconception that rate of speech is an unchangeable personality trait, presenting it instead as a skill that can be developed. The video promises to teach a "gear shift method" using three simple drills to enable effortless transitions between slow and fast speech while maintaining clarity.

Why you need to learn "rate of speech"

The importance of developing rate of speech is discussed, emphasising its role in becoming a more engaging communicator. Most people can comfortably speak at a rate between zero and six or seven on a scale of zero to ten, but struggle with clarity at faster speeds (8-10). Growing up in an environment where rapid speech is common, such as in Vietnamese or Chinese families, can naturally develop this skill. In today's world, people often increase the playback speed of online content like YouTube videos and audiobooks, making it essential for communicators to be able to speak quickly and clearly. The ability to vary one's rate of speech makes one more engaging and effective, especially when others have the option to speed up the content.

Exercises to speak faster and clearer

The video introduces three exercises to help improve speaking speed and clarity. The first exercise involves tongue twisters, which train the lips and tongue to move quickly between different positions. Practising tongue twisters slowly at first, with exaggerated lip and jaw movements, helps build muscle strength and speed. The second exercise is free-flow speaking, which aims to strengthen the connection between the mind (software) and the mouth (hardware). This involves dedicating 15 minutes to speaking whatever comes to mind, without judgement, starting slowly and gradually increasing speed. Communication frameworks like PAR 321 and PREP can be used to structure thoughts during this exercise. The third exercise involves placing a pencil in the mouth and reading aloud for 5 minutes, which overworks the tongue and lip movements, ultimately improving articulation and clarity.

0:00 Be honest. Has this ever happened to you? You're with a group of people and someone's sharing a story, but suddenly you notice yourself doing one of those polite yawns where you do it inside your mouth. Or you notice other people glancing at their watch or their phones. Maybe this time you're the one sharing the story and you notice other people struggling to keep up and they ask you, "Could you repeat that?" or "Could you say that a little bit slower?" If you fall into one of these two categories, then this video is for you. You see, most people think that rate of speech is a personality quirk that they're stuck with. But it isn't. It's actually a controllable gear shift, just like the gears in your car. And when you learn the gear shift method, which is a combination of three simple drills I'm

0:46 about to teach you, you'll be able to effortlessly flow through your rate of speech between slow and fast while still being able to articulate with high levels of clarity. But before I get into the three drills, I need you to understand why it's so important to develop the skill of rate of speech and why it's the key to becoming more engaging as a communicator. So when you think of the rate of speech scale and then let's just focus on this one foundation, okay? Because this one foundation alone can change your life. When you look at the scale of rate of speech from 0 to 10, zero being you pausing, 10 being you speaking quickly as you possibly can, a lot of people can access the rate of speech between zero and maybe about six or seven. They can do that fairly well. When it gets to about 8, 9 and 10, the faster the rates of speech, unless you have been in a family that has been notoriously known for speaking really quickly, you will

1:32 not be able to do so with clarity because your ability to articulate and pronounce words at those speeds. You would not have been able to develop the muscle required to be able to do that. In Vietnamese and in Chinese, I speak exceptionally fast. In my family, my mom and my dad, when they speak Vietnamese, my grandma and grandpa, uncles and aunties, they speak Vietnamese and Chinese. so fast it's crazy. It's like speeder Gonzalez. And as a result of having them speak like that my entire life, I also learned how to speak like that, too. And then I transferred those speaking behaviors into the speaking language. Now, when you look at the world we live in today, when people are consuming content online, what's one of the first things they do when they're consuming long- form content? What do they do to YouTube long form videos? What do they do to podcasts? What do they do to audio books? What do they do

2:18 to the speed? They generally turn it up to 1.25, 1.5 or two times speed. and so crazy. I've been known to do that as well. We now are able to speed up the rate of speech of the person reading the audio book. This is not just because it's available to us. It's also because it's necessary. I don't know if you've listened to an audio book before with an author who has terrible communication skills. It is so difficult to listen to. Now, I'm not going to call out any names, but I was I was reading a a medical book and I'm just reading about that now because I'm nearly 40. Yes, I'm crossing over to the other side and I just want to become more health consscious for myself and for my family members, especially my parents, those who are getting older. It's an 18-hour audio book and the person who narrates it is the author and when they read this is their rate of speech and they

3:07 basically read the entire audio book with these foundations and it's just constantly this rhythm and I was I was losing my absolute mind. So if there was not an option where I was able to go two times speed and if there was not an option where I can go three times speed to be honest three times speed sounds normal I would have never been able to finish that book. Therefore I would have never been able to consume that content. I don't think that author would have been as successful with his audio book if that feature was not available. All of this to say that the world now can make you a better communicator even if you're not simply because they have access to rate of speech. you all of a sudden now can become more engaging. That's why it's incredibly important

3:53 that you start to work on your rate of speech because if you're not good at speaking quickly, if that's not a superpower of yours, then you miss out on being able to engage people in real life. There are so many different parts of the mouth that are responsible for being able to articulate quickly. So, let's just focus on two for now. The first one being the tongue, second one being the lips, and I'll add in a third now as well, being the jaw. So, now let's focus on exercises. I'm going to share with you three things that's going to help you be able to speak more quickly, therefore be able to engage others. And remember, it's not just about speaking quickly. Don't think that, oh, if I want to engage others, all I got to do is speak really quickly like this, and then I'm going to be able to engage others, make them feel really intense, and then also be able to engage them to the max. No. No. That just makes everyone feel like, oh my god, I feel like I'm freaking out. Don't do that.

4:39 You want to learn how to use the entire scale. You want to be able to slow down and make other people feel at ease. But if you stay there and you consistently play with this rate of speech, I mean, are you already feeling a little bit lethargic? I'm just doing this for impact and effect so that you can understand how it impacts others when you do it. Right. First exercise number one, tongue twisters. Tongue twisters are an incredible way to be able to practice being able to speak quicker because tongue twisters are designed in a way where it's getting you to move from one lip placement to another lip placement. And even though it's called tongue twisters, it's actually helping you practice a lot with your lips and your tongue, right? It's lips included as well. And it's being

5:25 able to move from like an E position. E. And when you do E, think about where what happens to your lips. Also, think about what happens to your tongue. E, right? As opposed to A. Just being able to pronounce words that have E and R in them depending on which tongue twister you pick. You will immediately notice, oh wow, the mouth movements, the lip movements, and the lip positions are so dramatically different between each sentence and each word. What that's actually training you on is helping you build that muscle strength and that speed. You're training the speed of moving from one position to another, which then allows you to be able to speak more quickly. Because when you don't have the speed, you don't have the capacity and you don't have that muscle strength to be able to maintain doing

6:12 that for extended periods of time. Then what happens is you fall bit victim to mumbling. You basically become a mumble rapper when you're trying to speak fast. Whereas when I speak quickly, you still can understand me extremely clearly. And that's because I have developed the muscles. I have also been able to develop the ability to move between one mouth position to another mouth position extremely quick. That way my articulation, my pronunciation isn't lost when I'm speaking quickly. Whereas for most people when they're speaking quickly things, everything just becomes mubble. That's the first thing, tongue twisters. So I would dedicate a good 3 to 5 minutes practicing tongue twisters. And the way you practice tongue twisters is you want to practice them first of all by reading them slowly. And the reason you read it slowly is like when you're learning weights, right? When

6:57 you're learning how to do weights, you want to practice with the weights slowly first. Why? Because you want to understand how to get good form. So really understand the form of the lip placement, the lip position. Understand exactly where to place your tongue, how to move your jaw, because you want to pronounce the words in the tongue twister as clearly as humanly possible. So for example, one of my favorite ones is you just read very slowly. You read how much and you overdo the lip movements while you're practicing the first time round. So you go watch my my lip movements, right? You go. How much would would a woodchuck chuck if a wouldchuck could chuck would? He would chuck he would as much as he could and chuck as much wood as a

7:45 woodchuck would. If a wouldchuck could chuck wood. And if you keep practicing that slowly, really focusing on overdoing the lip movements, overdoing the jaw movements, and overdoing the tongue movements, you'll find that you'll be able to get faster and faster and faster and faster with these tongue twisters. And what that does, again, strengthens the muscles required to be able to consistently for prolonged periods of time be able to move quickly. And it also teaches you how to move quickly between different sounds, between different lip placements and tongue movements. And that's one of the most important things you can do to be able to speak faster. Next, the second thing, how often do you fall into a position where you find that you can think faster than you can speak? You've got all these thoughts in your mind, but then when you go to speak, you go and then nothing

8:32 comes out and when you speak, you feel like, oh, I feel like my mind was way ahead of my mouth. That's because a lot of people lack the ability to speak quickly. And if you lack the ability to speak quickly, if you've got all these thoughts in your mind and they're rushing out of you, your mouth can't keep up. So even in that that example that I just did there, I immediately thought of some words and the rush of words came to me. The thoughts came to me immediately. But because I've got a strong mind and mouth connection, I was able to immediately articulate everything that I wanted to say to you as I'm doing right now. So you've got to think of it as there's a software and then there's a hardware, right? Software, the thoughts that come to mind, that's your software. Then you've also got hardware, which is your lips, your tongue, your jaw, your mouth movements, the the vocal instrument. You've got to be able to connect these two. And the stronger the connection

9:18 between the software and the hardware, the more you're going to be able to speak your mind. And once you're able to strengthen that connection between software and hardware, once that connection is strong, you will feel so free. You'll feel this sense of freedom in your life where you go, "Oh, wow. I feel like I can just speak my mind. The moment I think something, I can articulate it with clarity." That becomes a superpower. Now, in order to get good at that, you need to practice that. Now, there's this wonderful exercise that I do when I'm journaling. When I'm journaling, sometimes I just free flow journal. And I'll dedicate 15 minutes where I literally will sit there and just write whatever comes to my mind. And that's mind and hand connection. All right? And I don't judge it. I don't I don't go, "Ew, Vin, why are you thinking of that?" Or, "Why Vin,

10:04 that's weird." Or, "Vin, that is Are you a psychopath?" No, I don't judge any of that. Now, you're probably thinking, "What are you writing, Vin?" I'm not going to tell you because it's it's private. It's a journal, right? So, you just sit down and you free flow. You just write. Free form. You just write. I want you to do the same thing. Now, however, don't write, speak it. Whatever you are thinking, just sit there and dedicate 15 minutes of practice just to free flow speak. Because one of the things you need to also do if you want to be able to speak faster is you need to connect the software with the hardware and have a strong strong flow there that's happening. Right? I'll give you an example. If I sit here, I reset my mind for a second and I'm just going to start talking whatever I'm thinking about in my mind. I'm not going to talk about this particular topic. And I'll show you how to do it. Because while

10:51 you're doing this, you want to be able to practice speaking quickly what you're thinking. And in the beginning, when you're doing this, you're just going to you're going to start and you're going to go, "Oh, I I um uh uh I'm just not that." That's because the mind and mouth connection is weak. But as you practice this more and more and more, you'll be able to flow in a beautiful way. So, you start slow and then you gradually try to speed up. I'll give you a sense of what I meant right now. I'm for some reason thinking about last night. There was this beautiful moment where my wife and I was just sitting there next to each other and the song was playing. There was nothing really emotional about the song to the start of the the experience. But really, there was a moment where I could hear just behind me someone sniffling. And the moment I heard someone sniffling behind me, I then immediately started to feel more emotional. And I wondered if it was

11:37 because of the sound of the music and the melody from the orchestra that they were playing the vibrations from that side of things that was making me feel emotional. But then as I think about it more, it wasn't actually just the sound and the vibrations from the orchestra. It was actually from the emotion from the people around me. And it just made me think that well maybe it's not just about the melody and the music. Maybe it's all about the human connection that I feel to all those strangers around me. And then I thought, wow, this is this is amazing that these people who are playing on stage right now, this person also singing songs with his language that he invented that none of us have any definition for. It was crazy because I was able to listen to that and at the same time be able to absorb all of the emotions from the musicians, but it was the emotions from the people around me that actually broke me and made me cry. Stop. That's just me free flowing speaking my mind. And I can promise you

12:25 that when you first start this activity, you will not be good at this. When you first doing this, it's going to be clunky. You're going to um you're going to ah but let me tell you this. I've been practicing this now for so long. And now I can rhythmically within these practice sessions of 15 minutes, I can focus purely on one foundation. I can focus on just rate of speech. And you watched me play with rate of speech there. As I wanted to do this an example, I stayed in that faster speed section more, right? And I did slow down too. I moved up. I moved down. But that is doing two things. That's me now practicing speaking faster, strengthening the mind and mouth mouth connection while also practicing all of the lip movements, tongue movements, jaw movements to be able to speak quickly.

13:11 To wrap up the second point, if you do struggle to know what to say when you're trying to strengthen the mind and mouth connection, instead of just speaking your mind and free flowing, you can instead try to structure your thoughts by using communication frameworks. Some of my favorite communication frameworks are par 321 and prep. And there are so many more that when you learn how to use them, you can speak on any topic at a moment's notice, even if you're put on the spot and under pressure. and I've recorded a free 2hour video that takes you through my favorite frameworks. Just click the first link in the description or the pinned comment below. Now, the third one, the third thing that I'm going to get you to do is place a pencil in your mouth. Okay? Place a pencil in your mouth and then I want you to read a book for 5 minutes and read the book out loud. Now, the reason I'm doing this is

13:59 to further strengthen the tongue movements and the lip movements when you place a pencil in your mouth and you try to talk. So, I'll just use my finger for now. If I do this, it sounds muffled. It sounds really unclear. But what you're actually doing is you're overworking. What you're actually doing is you're overworking the tongue movements and the lip movements. Your tongue and your lip has to work even harder to be able to create the correct sounds. Now, this is the equivalent of doing deadlifts. This is the equivalent of doing really heavy deadlifts. This is a difficult challenge because to do that and sustain that for 3 to 5 minutes is not an easy task. But once you do this though, if you commit to doing that after 5 minutes when you remove the

14:46 pencil, you will experience something with your lips and your tongue that you've never experienced before. If you and again, if you just did this once, it's going to blow your mind because you'll go, "Wa, I don't think I've ever been able to speak this clearly." Try it. These three exercises will absolutely transform your ability to capture attention, hold attention in a world where people are so easily distracted. And then you're going to have a skill that most won't. Most in this life don't think about how they can use their voice. You've now been able to really zone in and have three powerful exercises for rate of speech. Let me know how you go.
