00 hello this is greg berzinski for beardbrand alliance if you're watching this channel you probably have one and i bet it might even be a big one not everyone has a big one but a lot of guys do we're talking beards here what's a big beard i'm gonna say a big beard is anywhere from two and a half inches from the bottom of your chin up or in this case down so do you have a beard that's more than five months old i'd classify that as a big beard i'm not really here to talk about your big beard i want to talk to you about what kind of mustache goes with a big beard what are your capabilities in growing a mustache and stay around i'm going to give you my definitive choice and what i think looks best with a big
46 beard stay tuned welcoming aside i want to talk to you about not so much that big beard this isn't a big beard this is what i would classify as a medium beard bigger than an executive beard there's been times where every guy on this channel has had a big beard you've seen eric with a big beard you've seen carlos with a big beard you've seen ben with a big beard you've seen jeff with the big beard and me myself has had a big beard i've let my facial hair grow for about 11 months and i've seen probably the capabilities of my beard it doesn't so much get thin on the bottom it just is not dense enough i think to grow much
32 beyond that point and my mustache at that point i've let my mustache go for probably about eight months and i know the limitations on mustaches you might grow your beard for a year you might grow for two years your beard might get out of camera range and cover up the nice printing on your shirt but does your mustache grow as much as your beard talk about it a lot your beard grows about a half an inch a month and it can keep growing anywhere from a year to seven years see some guys that can walk on their beards they keep growing for seven seven years or more your average guy's beard will start going terminal at about a year to two years and that's the capabilities of a beard but what about the mustache do you
20 see a lot of guys out there who might have a six or nine inch beard do they have six or nine inch mustaches do they have six or nine inch mustache hairs growing from the point of their nose downward and the answer is no typically mustaches will go terminal way before a beard will go terminal even on the strongest beards we have uh here's a couple of my friends this is dash man who grows this epic imperial this epic handlebar mustache out to here and this guy here teddybeard who has a mustache that is considerably long and has enormous tails to it so those seem to grow but if you look at his lip hair and
06 here's a guy who doesn't really trim it all that much the lip hair seems to stop eric has talked about that in a recent video that the hair seems to stop and that was probably in my case it might get down to here it might grow about two two and a half inches then it goes terminal so that would be classified as the total 100 natural beard what i want to do is give you some choices on what you can do with your big beard and the reason i say there's choices you might be growing a yeard and you might want to see what you got but a lot of guys grow that beard and start maintaining a certain length and yet never change up a mustache because they think that the only thing they can do with a big beard is to wear a big mustache and i'm here
52 to challenge you that you do not have to necessarily wear a big mustache when you have a big beard so here are some suggestions on what you can do for a beard and at the end i'm going to tell you what my favorite choice is so go 100 natural of course uh the teddy beard eric has had the natural mustache with a big beard and a number of guys on here here's my version of my big natural mustache with a fuller beard just let it go and that seems to be the case with many guys they just let it go the next step up from that i would call the walrus now kind of interchangeable here but i would say that the walrus might be cut slightly and definitely
38 definitely pulled to the side and any long hairs might be trimmed so natural walrus maybe the same i would say walrus has a little more uh cut to it possibly a little more refinement the next choice would be to take your big beard with a rather full mustache that is uncut whether that be an uncut natural or a walrus and turn it into a handlebar or an imperial and so like the stash man there pulling those curls out my curls are tucked down right now but i still have them and i can pull it into a handle bar so that's a way something you can do whether that be a loose um handlebar or whether that be my
23 structured curl or whether that be you know this pulled out curl you have options to style your mustache with a big beard and so you just because you have a big natural beard doesn't mean you can't play around with the mustache and styling it so when you have that kind of natural mustache you have flexibility to let it natural to kind of sweep it off to the side or to really sweep it up into curls or really style it so while your mustache is long in that natural state of say the two to three inches that it's probably going to max out at go ahead have some fun with it now the next mustaches really involve what some people don't even want to talk about is actually cutting your mustache and why is that
11 i think it's because people wear the beard and like i'm wearing this natural beard this big beard i haven't cut it and i'm never going to cut my mustache and what i say to that is because your mustache is typically not gonna grow more than two inches or four months maybe five months whatever you do to your mustache is going to grow back in four or five months so you might have a beard that might represent 15 months 18 months even on the short end 10 months but the mustache really is only representing about the four or five month mark so why not cut it knowing that in short order it's going to grow back and you can have that mustache
57 i don't know if you realize but in the past year or so i've been playing around much much more with my mustache length i cut it fairly short before to reveal my smile and to reveal you know like expression in my face that comes only when you can see someone's teeth and when they smile but then i'll let it grow out and let it grow longer but then i cut it up and i'm not really sometimes touching the length of my beard and that's okay because i know within a month it's going to be a half an inch longer within too much it's going to be an inch longer and it's going to get back to that point where it's going to look like a big walrus so i want to encourage guys and you might get where i'm going to go ahead and trim up your mustaches even if you have a big beard so the next
44 step actually you have that mustache is actually go ahead trim up the center of your handlebar and wear a handlebar whether it be curled up or more like a biker handlebar wearing it down with a trimmed mid lip talked before about the one-third two-thirds rule so if you take your lip on each side divide into three take the two center portions leave this as a tail three sections over here two sections in the middle cut up the four sections in the middle leave the two longer sections section one section six on either side longer and that's what a lot of guys do what they want to get the hair out of their mouth when they want to not have hair in their food when they want to be intimate with
30 someone without hair in someone else's mouth that's reason why a lot of guys will want to trim up their mustaches and yet you can still have the potential to have a curl now you don't necessarily have to take your lip line up above your lip you can see right now mine's more of a mid lip or just draw a straight line across your closed mouth the shorter you get it up that's less likely it is going to be in someone else's face or in your food so that's one option another option is go ahead cut off the curls and wear a shorter more traditional chevron style mustache even with the big beard here's an example of that it's done people do this
16 and i think a lot of guys do this knowing that it is going to grow back what's the next step after you cut the chevron which is a much more conservative shape in a mustache what's the next step the next step you don't see this a lot but it's actually doing a clipper cut on a mustache only while keeping a big beard and so here's an example of a clipper cut stash on the bearded regulator on a clipper-cut beard but i can imagine you know having that clipper cut with a fuller beard what's an option beyond that you start getting into very stylized beards and i've talked before about the philly beard that's actually having big massive beards and actually taking
01 the mustache down fairly short even to the point where it's a pencil mustache and it's a style that's very popular in philadelphia for example having a very refined very short mustache with a big beard so there are your options now i said at the beginning of this video i would give you my favorite my favorite actually is for you to do all of them to actually go through that step and progressively getting it shorter you might not go down to stubble you might not go down to the pencil but you can certainly go down to the chevron knowing that in one month or two months your walrus-like mustache will be back now i just want to preface this at all
47 you have watched your beard grow you know how long it has taken your hair to grow on your mustache you know how long it's taken your beard to grow i'm not recommending everyone that if you cut off your mustache it's going to grow back in one month or two months so buyer beware here that you have to monitor what you have your own beard and your own mustache has done but as a rule of thumb most guys mustaches do grow at about the same rate for the first two months of their mustache and then progressively slow down so if you want to grow that inch back on the mustache you can actually do it in two months so comment below guys tell me what you think of guys who have big beards and more defined mustaches more stylized mustaches or even
33 shorter mustaches until we meet again [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
