Brief Summary

This video provides a comprehensive guide to using the PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System) diagnostic tool, focusing on resolving common issues and enabling advanced features. It covers fixing the black menu problem by adjusting the virtual machine's date, correctly setting service intervals, activating rolling test mode for dyno runs, enabling development mode for coding, and customising vehicle settings like last mode for start/stop and rain-sensing wipers. Additionally, it explains how to remove unwanted warnings from the instrument cluster and control indicator lights.

  • Resolving the PIWIS black menu issue by adjusting the virtual machine's date.
  • Correctly setting service intervals to match country-specific standards.
  • Activating rolling test mode for dyno runs and advanced diagnostics.
  • Enabling development mode for coding and customising vehicle settings.
  • Removing unwanted warnings from the instrument cluster and controlling indicator lights.

Fixing the PIWIS Black Menu Problem

The video addresses an issue where the PIWIS diagnostic tool displays a black menu upon startup. The previously used method of starting the virtual machine with a batch file to revert the date is no longer reliable, possibly due to VirtualBox updates. The solution involves manually adjusting the date within the virtual machine settings. After the virtual machine starts, hover over the date, right-click, and select "Adjust time/date." Change the year to 2019 before starting PIWIS. Starting PIWIS with the incorrect date (e.g., 2022) will cause the black menu problem, requiring a complete reinstall of the virtual machine from the OVA file.

Setting Service Intervals Correctly

Due to the virtual machine's date being set back to 2019, the PIWIS tool may not correctly set service intervals based on the car's current date. To resolve this, navigate to "Instrument Cluster," then "Maintenance and Repairs," and select "Write Maintenance Interval" instead of "Reset Maintenance Interval." Choose the correct country (e.g., Australia) to ensure the default service intervals are appropriate (e.g., 15,000 km/1 year for oil changes in Australia). Manually input the last service date and mileage to allow the instrument cluster to calculate and display the correct upcoming service intervals.

Activating Rolling Test Mode

Rolling test mode is used to run the car through its gears without actual movement, which is useful for dyno testing or diagnostics. To activate it, go to "PSM" (Porsche Stability Management), then "Maintenance Repairs," and select "Rolling Test Mode." Choose the option "Rolling test mode remains active over and Beyond ignition cycles for a single axis roller tester" and click "Start." This mode allows the wheels to move without triggering PSM errors due to mismatched front and rear wheel speeds. After testing, deactivate the mode by returning to the same menu and selecting "Stop." Ensure the mode is fully deactivated before driving the car on the road.

Enabling Development Mode for Coding

To enable development mode for coding, go to "Settings," then "Diagnostics Configuration," and select your platform. In the "Mode" dropdown, choose "E" (Entwicklung, German for development). Avoid selecting "P" as it may crash the system. Save the changes. The interface will switch to German, requiring the use of a translation tool. Development mode allows access to advanced coding options for customising vehicle settings.

Customising Vehicle Settings: Last Mode for Start/Stop

The "Last Mode" feature retains the last selected setting for certain functions, such as the start/stop system. To enable this, navigate to "BKE" (likely referring to a specific control unit), then "Coding," and select "Manual coding without MCR rules." Find the options related to "code word default sewage stand" and select "last mode." Set the desired mode (e.g., "yeah" to keep start/stop off). Write the changes to retain the setting across ignition cycles.

Activating Rain-Sensing Wipers

To activate rain-sensing wipers, go to "BCM" (Body Control Module), then "Coding," and select "Manual coding without MCR rules." Locate the "Regen sensor" (German for rain sensor) options. Find "RLS coder" and "rain sensor inactive." Set "rain sensor inactive" to "nine" (no) and the other rain sensor option to "ya" (yes) to activate the feature. Write the changes to enable rain-sensing wipers.

Removing Warnings from the Instrument Cluster

To remove unwanted warnings from the MFD (Multi-Function Display), such as those related to active transmission mounts, go to the "Combi instrument" (Instrument Cluster), then "Coding," and select "Manual coding without MCA rules." Navigate to the "warnings configuration" section. Find the relevant warning (e.g., PASM options) and deactivate it by changing the setting to "not active." This will prevent the warning from appearing upon starting the car.

Controlling Indicator Lights

To turn off specific indicator lights on the tachometer or speedometer display, access the "warning lapping" (warning lamp) section in the instrument cluster coding. Select the light you want to control (e.g., blinkers left and right) and change the setting to "us" to deactivate it or "os" to activate it. This allows customisation of the displayed warnings and indicators.

0:14 one of the issues that I've seen of late with the startup of the piwis and the black menu problem is that we for a while starting the virtual machine using a batch file which took the date back but for some reason that hasn't been working for me likely I'm not sure if it's a due to an update with virtualbox but this is my solution around it which has worked every single time I don't need to start from the batch file it seems to work quite happily from both I'm just going to click that and start it and once everything started the first thing that you must do is come down here hover your mouse over the top of the date you can see that's saying the 1st

1:02 of August 22 so it's like it has taken the the time and the first couple of like the the month and the day but it hasn't taken the year for some reason so if I right click on that and I just go adjust the time date come over here and I'll just go back to 2019 just click any day in there click ok and now when it starts up it'll be fine the critical thing is though you must change that year before you start P was here if you start piwis with it showing 2022 you will have the black menu problem and you will need to delete the whole virtual machine off your computer and then start from scratch by reloading that OVA so if I click that up now

1:48 there we go and it's good to go one of the problems with the virtual machine is that everything's sort of dated back to 2019 so when you're writing service intervals on the car what it does is it doesn't take the current date that's in the car it takes what's actually on your p-west machine so it'll set the kilometers correctly but it won't select the dates correctly so this is the way around that so if I go into instrument cluster I go maintenance and repairs and you'll notice down the bot here we've got reset maintenance interval and that's the automatic one that they'd normally be using if the date was correct and if you go in here we'll see these options of which ones we're going to reset and you'll tick those and click execute but the problem

2:33 is that just doesn't fix the problem so to set the maintenance interval correctly come down here to right maintenance interval click next now it'll give you this sort of warning just to say hey this is to write maybe a new instrument cluster don't worry about that works perfectly okay and when you come to this first screen select your country I live in Australia not France not in God's country so I'm going to select that and the reason you want to do that is because the default times and kilometers for what the instruments cluster will set to for the next service is based on the country that you select so for example the oil change interval here in Australia is 15 000 kilometers and a year whereas in France it was two years and 30 000 kilometers so it won't set it

3:19 correctly if you've got the the incorrect country selected and then you want to come down here you can put in the kilometers you can go and change all of these as required so it's the date of the last service and here in Australia for example at Main maintenance is every 60 000 kilometers in four years intermediate maintenance is every 30 000 kilometers or two years the oil change is 15 000 kilometers or one year so just change it to what it is when you do the service and then the instrument cluster will automatically add on the appropriate amount and display that correctly for the service intervals and so for example if I just change this to make this 0 1 and I go next

4:05 I want to execute I'm going to write all of those and then if you go and have a look at your instrument cluster you'll notice that they are all good to go here we're going to look at the rolling test mode which is the mode that input the car into if you want to download the car or for some reason like I am where I just want to run the car through the gears without the thing moving and basically the there's going to be a mismatch between the front and the rear wheels which the PSM isn't going to like so normally you wouldn't be able to do this but using this motor it allows you to do so so each at the top level here I'm going to go down to PSM select that go into maintenance repairs so go into rolling test mode

4:55 and up here where this value is nothing at the moment what we want to do is go into that top one there rolling test mode remains active over and Beyond ignition cycles for a single axis roller tester well this is the one that works best for me and I'm going to click Start when I select that you can see it's gone into rolling test mode there'll be a bunch of errors that come up on the MFD including telling you that it's gone into the rolling test mode and now what you can do is just select the gears as required and it will move the wheels with it quite happily without giving you problems with the PSM because the front wheels aren't rolling so what I'll do is I'll put it into gear you can use either drive or manual I'm just going to put a stick on the accelerator hold it about 2000 RPM and then just manually go through the gears

5:44 first [Music] I'm just going to slip through that two thousand up here you can see the wheel I'm turning gently there I'm just going to go through those gears we've got a turkey whoa okay there's the wheel spinning there in seventh and if I go back through the gears it'll still me allowed to do that quite happily it'll make a bunch of bunch of

6:30 noises at rev matches but I'll do that a couple of times and then I'll just take my my stick off the accelerator and it'll just cycle down through the vehicle itself we're taking the bus pick up the accelerator and now to cycle back for a second and if I put my foot on a break I'm changing the first and now I can select part once you're done here you obviously need to stop that

7:16 sometimes I get this negative control response thing if that happens just go next go back to the top level I can still see in the car that roll mode is active so I'm going to go back down to PSM maintenance and repairs rolling test mode I want to stop that and now I can go back into rolling test mode check it again and it's deselected I should see on the

8:03 MFD that rolling test mode has is not up there on the screen you know I can jump back out of that obviously you don't want to be in Rolling test mode when you put your car back on the road to get piwis into development mode to do coding let me come down here to settings Diagnostics configuration select your platform that one there can come over to mode

8:49 this V here drop down and select e do not select P otherwise it'll crash your whole system and then we just want to click save down here and then we can escape acknowledge that and now everything's going to be in German so Google Translate is going to be your help so now we can go into Diagnostics you'll notice that everything will crank up in German last mode is a mode that you can select

9:36 on the center console and air conditioning control unit which is all the one control unit uh that allows the center console buttons to remain selected that doesn't work for sports sports plus but it does work with your pasm selection but most importantly for me it's for the uh the stop start so basically I turn it off two or three years ago when I uh enabled this mode and I've never had to turn it back off again so you want to come down to so come down to this one here BKE and then go into this coding option here foreign then go to manual coding without MCR

10:22 rules is what that is in development mode but the top option the next and depending on the control unit that you go into there'll either be a few or sometimes there are just like hundreds and hundreds of different options this is where for example you can select these are the buttons and one two three four on the left or right Etc but what we're going to do is we're going to come down here I'm going to find these two modes here code word default sewage stand or whatever that is that one and that one there now I've selected this already so this is these are the modes that you actually want to change it to so in the word here you would have something else I want last mode and I want this to be yeah and then I'm going to go write the right

11:07 option isn't available down here now because obviously it's already selected but then you're right and then you are good to go so when you select maybe your peasant button or your stop start to off it'll just retain that for the next time you start the car to activate the rain sensing wipers if they're not active on your car because most cars have them fitted but unless you actually paid for the option then they won't come activated so to activate those again we are in development mode in German we want to come down to BCM born because that is the front BCM go to the coating option here

11:55 then the manual coating without MCR rules the top one and get it all now there are loads of options in here you just have to dig down and find these so the first one we want to find is you're going to select two so we're looking for coding value this one here German for rain sense is Regan sensor so select that one and continue down we want to find this one here at the bottom this RLS coder and whatever it is rain sensor inactive so you've got both of those selected I'll go forward now I have already selected both of

12:41 these on in the car but what we want to do is have Ryan sensor inactive two nine many no if it's not working it should be on ya or yes meaning it's inactive this one up here to actually turn it on is uh we're going to turn that Dr that might be on nine obviously after that you would have a right option down the bottom here and then once you're done then your range sensing wipers should be active to remove warnings from the MFD so they don't come on so for example you have the active transmission mounts or engine mounts in the 911 and you've replaced those with stock mounts after they've failed and you want the warning to stop popping up every time

13:27 you start the car this is the way you're going to do it I'm going to go down to the instrument cluster which is this one here Combi instrument go to coding manual coding without MCA rules next and there are I think there's probably about a thousand different options here if I just hit this as you'll see this will just rattle through hundreds and hundreds of these things but if we go down to the bottom here where we get this warnings configuration and lists and there are hundreds and hundreds of these so we want to go down to sort of about the 400s where you can actually see it in alphabetical order we want to go down to the pasm options and there aren't many pasm options here but I'm pretty sure it's this one here

14:13 so if I go in there and select that it'll give me the option that at the moment it's active and I could change that to not active now this car doesn't have the Adaptive transmission mount so it's irrelevant anyhow for me but that is how you would change that if you want to turn off some of the the lights that is Led pictures that come up on the tachometer or on the left hand Speedo display this is where you go in here so instead of being the warnings configuration it's warning lapping which I'm assuming is warning lamp and for example I've turned the blinkers off because there's just a problem with the car at the moment they're just making these blinkers go

14:58 off because I think someone's breaking into the car so if I just go into the blinkers left and right it'll show me that these have been deactivated which is what I wanted but so Os or iron will turn them back on us we'll turn them off so you can do that with any of those lights if you want to
