  • Fasted walking is a sustainable and simple exercise with additional benefits like mood enhancement and improved heart health.

Introduction

The video addresses the common desire to eliminate stubborn belly fat and introduces walking in a fasted state as an effective method to achieve this without high-impact exercises. It's highlighted that 98% of the presenter's cardio consists of walking in a fasted state, supported by scientific evidence.

Why walking fasted is so effective

Walking in a fasted state, when insulin levels are low after 8-12 hours of not eating, prompts the body to use stored fat for energy. Belly fat is typically the last to be burned because it's where fat is stored first, and consistency is key to tapping into these reserves. When fasted, the body has low blood sugar and glycogen stores, leading it to burn visceral fat around the belly and organs. Walking at a brisk, steady pace is more effective than high-intensity cardio in this state, as the goal is to force the body to use fat for fuel instead of glucose from recent meals.

The science behind belly fat

Belly fat isn't inherently stubborn; fat loss occurs systemically based on genetics and hormones, not targeted areas. The challenge is maintaining consistency long enough for the body to access deeper fat reserves. When fasted, the body taps into fat stores due to low blood sugar and glycogen levels, particularly targeting visceral fat around the belly and organs.

2 studies on light exercise in a fasted state

A 2016 study in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that participants doing cardio in a fasted state burned 20% more fat than those who ate beforehand. Another study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that fasted low-intensity cardio improved insulin sensitivity and reduced abdominal fat over time, even without dietary changes. However, exceeding daily calorie maintenance will hinder progress regardless of exercise.

Other benefits of walking fasted

Besides fat loss, walking in a fasted state offers additional benefits such as lowering cortisol levels and boosting mood. It's easy on the joints, improves blood sugar control and heart health, encourages outdoor activity, clears the mind, and sets a positive tone for the day. This makes it a sustainable and effective exercise, especially for men over 50.

How to start walking fasted

To start walking fasted, wake up, drink water and black coffee or tea without sugar to maintain the fasted state. Avoid any calories, even from chewing gum, before the walk. Go for a brisk walk for 30-45 minutes, or 20 minutes if just starting out, enough to slightly raise your heart rate. Delay eating until after the walk to stay in the prime fat-burning zone. This simple method can be a sustainable way to lose belly fat.

0:00 We call it stubborn belly fat. The truth is belly fat isn't really [Music] stubborn. Hey everybody, welcome back to Fit After 50. In this community post that I recently put out, I asked you, the viewers, if there's one thing you could fix in your fitness journey right now, what would it be? And would you believe over half of you told me that you'd like the stubborn belly fat gone? What I'd like to tell you is if you want to lose belly fat without running, jumping, or grinding away on a treadmill, you're in the right place because today I'm sharing the easiest, most effective fat burning method that I personally use. And it's not hard cardio. In fact, 98% of my cardio is

0:47 just walking in a fasted state. And science backs this up. Let's talk about why it works and how you can start doing it as soon as tomorrow morning. For all of you who have subscribed to my channel, I want to say thank you. It means a lot. For you guys that haven't yet subscribed, I'd like you to hit that subscribe button if you will. When you wake up in the morning, your body is in a fasted state. You haven't eaten for 8 to 12 hours. That means your insulin levels are low and your body is primed to use stored fat for energy. So, when you head out for a brisk walk before breakfast, your body has no choice but to tap into fat stores, especially the kind most of us want to lose, stubborn belly fat. We call it stubborn belly

1:34 fat. The truth is, belly fat isn't really stubborn. We probably are more stubborn than the fat. Fat loss happens systemically, not spot specific. Your body burns fat from all over based on genetics and hormones, not where you want it to. Belly fat is typically the last to go simply because that's where most of us store it first. The real issue is most people give up before staying consistent long enough to let the body tap in to those deeper reserves. It's not that belly fat won't go, it's that we just quit, give up too soon. Let me try to explain why walking fasted is so effective, even more so than hard cardio. When you're fasted,

2:20 your blood sugar and glycogen stores are low. So, when you walk, your body taps into fat stores for fuel, particularly visceral fat, which sits around your belly and your organs. But if you walk after a meal or you do highintensity cardio, your body switches fuel sources. It'll burn the glucose and glycogen from your last meal because those are faster to access for the body. This means your stored fat remains in storage. This is why it's important to walk at a steady, brisk state. But don't get all amped up and feeling really energetic and decide to turn your walk into a jog thinking that'll be better than walking. The goal is to force the body to use fat for

3:07 fuel. And our bodies love to hold on to stored fat because that's its natural survival mechanism to keep you going in the event you ever run out of food. A 2016 study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that participants doing cardio fasted burned 20% more fat than those who ate first. But listen to this. Another study in the journal of applied physiology found that fasted lowintensity cardio improved insulin sensitivity and helped reduce abdominal fat over time even without changing your diet. This is exactly why I walked fasted almost every morning because it's the perfect zone for burning fat. Of course, if you're exceeding your

3:54 maintenance calorie intake on a daily basis or most days of the week, it's going to be difficult to make much progress, regardless of how much walking you do or how much hard cardio you do. Fat loss isn't the only benefit you're going to receive from walking in a fasted state. It also lowers cortisol and boost your mood. It's easy on your joints, unlike running or doing uh highintensity training. Because let's be honest, there's a lot of you out there who just can't do all of the heavy duty cardio that you used to do. It improves blood sugar control and heart health. And it gets you outside. It gets you moving. And it just clears your mind and gets you off to a good start for the

4:39 day. It's sustainable. It's simple. And it's incredibly effective for men over 50. Here's how you should start doing this. So, you wake up in the morning and drink some water. If you drink coffee, you can have coffee, but don't put anything in it. Don't put sugar in it. Or if you drink tea, you can do that. Just no sugar. Because if you take in any calories, even chewing a piece of gum, then you're no longer in a fasted state. So, you want to make sure there's no calories before you do this walk. You want to be completely fasted. Go for a brisk walk, okay? Not a stroll, but enough to slightly raise your heart rate. You want to walk for about 30 minutes, maybe 45 minutes if you're up to it. If you're just starting out, 20

5:25 minutes is a good start. Don't eat until after you've had your walk. This is going to keep you in that prime fat burning zone. I'll tell you, this is my cardio. I only introduce more intense cardio to my plan if I'm training for a physique competition, and that's primarily jump rope and doing some short sprinting. If you're serious about losing belly fat, and you want to do it in the easiest, most sustainable way possible, start walking fasted. It works.
