Brief Summary

This video presents a curated list of five AI-powered tools designed to summarise YouTube videos efficiently. It highlights the time-saving benefits of using such tools, especially compared to manual methods like exporting transcripts and using generic AI models. The tools are presented in ascending order of preference, with the presenter's favourite saved for last.

  • Monica: A free, general-use browser extension with a built-in YouTube summariser.
  • MyMap: A visual tool that generates mind maps of YouTube videos.
  • Otto: A research tool with a minimalist UI that stores saved videos and summaries in one place.
  • Readwise Reader: An app for highlighting and saving text from YouTube transcripts, with a built-in summarisation feature.
  • Recall: The presenter's favourite, offering formatted summaries, question generation, flashcards, and automatic categorisation of videos by topic.

Intro

The presenter introduces the topic of the video: the top five AI tools for summarising YouTube videos. He explains the rationale behind using such tools, emphasising the time saved compared to manually summarising videos using transcripts and general AI models. The presenter promises that the tools will be presented in ascending order of quality, saving the best for last.

Tool 1

The first tool discussed is Monica, a popular Google Chrome extension with over 2 million users. Monica is a general-use AI tool that includes a YouTube summariser. It can generate a broad overview of a video and break it down by timestamps. The presenter notes that while Monica is free and easy to use, it lacks some key features found in other apps.

Tool 2

MyMap is introduced as a visual tool that generates mind maps of YouTube videos. By pasting a YouTube URL, the tool creates a mind map on an infinite canvas, which can be useful for breaking down long videos like podcasts and courses. MyMap also offers features like chatting with the generated maps and real-time collaboration. The presenter finds its YouTube video mapping ability to be a standout feature, but notes that the user experience isn't as straightforward as some other tools.

Tool 3

Otto is presented as a research tool with a minimalist user interface. It claims to be the fastest way to do research and provides access to the latest AI models. The Chrome extension instantly generates summaries on the left side of the screen and offers a chat window for creating custom prompts. Otto stores all saved videos in one place, allowing users to easily chat with any of them. The presenter highlights the importance of having a centralised place to find summaries for later use.

Tool 4

Readwise Reader is described as an app for "real readers" and those who enjoy a "second brain" approach. It allows users to highlight text from YouTube video transcripts and save it to their notes. The app has a built-in summarisation feature called "invoke ghost reader," which extracts key takeaways and presents them in markdown format. These notes are automatically exported to note-taking apps like Notion or Obsidian. While powerful, Readwise can be overwhelming for some users.

Tool 5

Recall is the presenter's favourite YouTube summary tool. The browser extension turns videos into formatted documents with timestamps. Users can make changes, delete sections, and highlight text. The tool allows for easy sharing via a link or export to markdown. Recall can generate questions and multiple-choice flashcards to aid learning and retention. Like Otto, it provides a dedicated library for saved video summaries, but it also automatically creates category folders and sorts videos by topic. The "graph" feature connects videos based on key concepts or subjects. The presenter praises the concise and actionable summaries generated by Recall.

2:18 claims to be the fastest way to do research it has a beautiful minimalist UI provides access to the latest AI models and if I click the Chrome extension on any YouTube video it instantly generates a on the left and provides a wonderful chat window where we can create anything else we want from the transcript with our own prompts and Otto does something we haven't seen yet so far it stores all of our saved videos in one place and we can easily chat with any of them by just typing the at symbol it's great and honestly a feature I think most people Overlook the point of all this is to gather information for later use if you can't quickly find that information then what's the point having a centralized place to find these summaries is essential now this app is for the real readers the second brain enjoyers readwise reader is an app that

3:04 I've been using daily for years if you're looking to highlight the exact text from a YouTube video transcript and then save it to your notes this is the one for you but what about summarizing readwise has it built in but it's it's easy to miss if we go to the little Ellipsis menu here on one of our saved videos we can click invoke ghost reader and we're presented with a list of preset prompts what we're looking for is the extract key takeaways prompt click it and we instantly get a document note here with the takeaways in markdown format how amazing is that and then all of these notes are automatically exported to our Notes app of choice like notion or obsidian that being said readwise can be a bit overwhelming for some that's why for many people I recommend this last one on my list this

3:50 is a new app that I've absolutely fallen in love with it's called recall and if I click the browser extension you can see it turns the video into a formatted some document with timestamps in this document we can make any changes we want delete sections and highlight text when we're ready it's very easy to share with a link or export to markdown in this menu you can also see we have the option to generate questions if you're really wanting to learn and retain information this is invaluable recall takes our summaries and generates multiple choice flashcards I know not for everyone but very powerful I haven't even shown you the best part about recall like Odio it gives us a dedicated library for our saved video summaries but it's doing

4:36 something amazing here on the left menu it automatically creates category folders and sorts videos we save by topic additionally if we click graph in the menu we can see it's connecting all of our videos together based on key Concepts or subjects it's been really amazing to watch the scph grow as I'm using recall daily right now this is by far my favorite YouTube summary tool because in addition to the amazing features I find the wording of the summaries it generates to be the most concise and actionable okay guys that's it for this video if you want a curated list of innovative Tools in your email inbox each week join my free newsletter in the description of this video or go to this website thank you guys so much for watching the whole video it means the world to me you have no idea so
