  • Dr. Anuj highlights his struggles and experiences in medical education and content creation.
  • He emphasizes the significance of being recognized as a doctor over a content creator.
  • The chapter outlines the factors influencing his decision about his medical specialty.

Anuj's Journey: Choosing a Medical Specialty

Dr. Anuj begins by reflecting on how he wants to be perceived by his children, emphasizing his desire for them to say he is a doctor rather than a content creator. He shares his story of achieving a 99.4 percentile in NEET PG, which opened up choices for his postgraduate specialization. In medical school, he felt pressured to study various subjects, but post-graduation allows him the freedom to choose a field that excites him. He weighs the realities of different specialties and how they align with both his professional aspirations and personal life.

The Conflict Between Medicine and Social Media

Dr. Anuj faces an internal conflict between two successful paths: continuing his career in medicine or pursuing his growing presence in social media. He notes his success in social media, where he has gained significant traction, but questions whether the satisfaction of impacting lives in medicine can be matched. He discusses finding joy in video creation but highlights the lasting fulfillment he gets from saving lives during his medical training.

Narrowing Down His Options: Clinical Branches vs. Social Media

Dr. Anuj explains that he considered various clinical branches and reflected on their implications for work-life balance, financial prospects, and personal satisfaction. He recognizes that certain specialties, like surgery or intensive care, would demand significant time and effort, leaving little room for his social media endeavors. He identifies two possible branches—Dermatology and Radiology—that would allow him to balance both careers but ultimately reveals a deeper passion for core clinical medicine, where he could be directly involved in patient care.

The Moment of Truth: Counseling Results

As the counseling results are announced, Dr. Anuj shares the anxiety and anticipation he felt. When he checks the round one list, he finds out he has been accepted into MD Medicine at GMC Nakur, which had always been his dream. He expresses gratitude to his supportive family through this challenging phase and reflects on the rigorous preparation involved in clearing the NEET PG exam while managing content creation alongside his internship duties.

Reflecting on His Choice: Why Medicine?

Dr. Anuj elaborates on why he has ultimately chosen medicine, expressing a deep-seated interest that has developed over time, supported by inspirational figures in the field. He recounts moments from his training that solidified his passion, including his experiences in hospital wards and the impact of teachers in shaping his understanding of the subject. He weighs the excitement of surgery against the lifestyle considerations of medicine, concluding that the latter aligns more with his values and future goals.

Branch Selection: Similarities to Arranged Marriage

Lastly, Dr. Anuj discusses his conversation with a mentor who compared selecting a medical specialty to an arranged marriage. He acknowledges that no branch is perfect and that every choice comes with pros and cons. Despite his love for medicine, he aims to embrace the journey ahead with an open heart. He invites viewers to support his channel and looks forward to providing quality educational content moving forward.

0:00 Anuj what do you want to be known for when somebody asks your kids what does your father do and immediately the answer that came to my mind was I want them to answer my father even though it is very good in the short run it can make you a Cora in literally a year but at the same time does not give me that amount of satisfaction and with great courage and anxiety I opened up the all India Kota round one list and looked up my role number and there it was my friends it was this channel started out with documenting my life and recently a decision I took has completely changed my course of life that decision my friends is about the PG branch that I will take and I have a crazy story to tell you all behind it how I arrived at the branch and did I get it or did I not get it after cracking my need PG with 99.4 percentile in an all India rank of

0:45 137 life gave me two choices you see in mbbs you are forced to study all the subjects even though you might not like some of them even though you might find some of them very difficult to read and very complicated to understand it's part of the curriculum and you have to do it but in postgraduation it's in your hand to choose the subject that actually interests you to choose a subject in which you want to choose a career for yourself there are so many Specialties available and it's on you to decide what do you want your life to look like you know exactly what you will answer when people ask you actually and you don't have to answer with you can actually [Music] answerid doctor and what your day-to-day will look like will you be spending hours in the OT trying to extract that tumor or will will you be working in

1:30 your OPD seeing hundreds of patients and resolving their issues on the same day or will you be sitting in a lab analyzing and Reporting about different histopathologies and determining what the patient is actually suffering from or will you be sitting in an air conditioned room with an ultrasonogram telling the happy news to the mother that she is pregnant how much time will you get for your family will you be a surgeon who is continuously busy or will you find time for yourself will you have a work life balance how much money will you earn will it be 2 lakhs per month or 5 lakhs per month or 25 lakhs a month it all depends on the kind of doctor you will become even though I do not believe that a branch is what defines you I still believe it is a very big part of your identity and this was a very big decision for me and my friends to be honest I was in a very unique situation compared to any of the person who has ever given this n PG exam and succeeded in it because you know in the last 6

2:16 years while being a medical student I have somehow managed to create another career for myself and that is to document and make videos that is to create videos that impact lives of millions of students all across the world so I was in this unique situation should I continue the career which I've chosen for myself that is in the medical field or should I continue a career which I chosen for myself in social media both of the being extremely good options and I'll tell you exactly how I navigated through this choice in the world of social media I personally think that I figured out a few bits and pieces of how the algorithm Works what goes Super viral and what does not consistently produce content over years and that has put me in a good spot and with all this understanding I feel I can make significant progress going forwards just in the last 6 months we have somehow managed to gain three 3 lakh subscribers which otherwise used to take

3:01 more than a year to do and that was all because I kept on improving my game this one option was very valid to go to the social media route it's very lucrative it's got great money in the future what about the rewarding aspect of it is social media as rewarding as many people think that it is you know you can make some money out of it that's for sure the bigger creators out there are earning more than cardiologists in top most cities of India what is the satisfaction okay you are impacting lives that's for sure one thing but the first life that you save during your internship period that will give you more satisfaction than entirety of social media career combined but what about the art aspect of it ano don't you like creating videos I love creating videos I love the art effect of it you are able to make an entire video from nothing and and that's similar to using a brush to paint something because videos and every single thing that you see online is a piece of art and behind it is an artist

3:48 so of course if I wanted to go in the social media route I will definitely have to choose PG branches which align with social media and there are only basically two branches I saw for myself that fit into these category first being ology other one being Radiology in these two branches I will get adequate enough time to give to my social media and also grow it while also becoming a doctor but then we have the other aspect of it the aspect of something which I've always dreamed of the aspect of being a physician or a surgeon the aspect of choosing a hardcore clinical branch which will be actually really satisfying core clinical branches can be medicine surgery obgy Pediatrics Orthopedics Anesthesia where we are directly involved with patient care like no one else we are intervening to stop a bleeding vessel or or to saving a life of somebody who is dying from dehydration from diagnosing cancers to

4:33 treating them all of this are beautiful aspects of modern day medicine that can only be found in core clinical branches but the only downside to this was it required a huge amount of investment with respect to time effort and energy it requires a lot of hard work to get into one of these branches in the first place and definitely in India we have got a lot of heavy workload relatively less pay compared to most of the other countries you have to be on call several days and you have to do so many night shifts and social media definitely does not go hand inand with these clinical branches especially during residency so these were the two broad roads which I was facing and now I had to choose what do I want to be in the future and it was so complicating to figure out but then I ask myself this one question Anuj what do you want to be known for when somebody asks your kids what does your father do and immediately the answer that came to my mind was I want them to

5:18 answer my father is a doctor and not my father is a content creator even though I would still be a doctor even if I was a content creator I want to be known as a doctor even more than being known as somebody who has let's say million subscribers on YouTube second question I asked myself was what exactly do I imagine my day-to-day life to be looking like and that really helped me down narrow my choices I always imagined an OT or an OPD coming first and all throughout the day looking at patients and in the evening if I have some time after spending with my family then going towards content creation that was my Lookout of it and immediately after answering these few questions I knew that the lighter branches were not for me and the social media path was not for me even though it is very good in the short run it can make you a Cora in literally a year but at the same time does not give me that amount of satisfaction which the art of learning

6:04 about the human body gives and before you knew it the counseling had started and my choices were set I had locked them and I was waiting for the list and my friends yesterday the result of round one counseling came and before looking at the result you know you have that anxiety you have that feeling before you look at the result no matter how well you have scored you always have that anxiety before opening the result but you also know that you have worked extremely hard to be in this position and this is the moment where the fruits of your lab nebor are to be seen and no matter how many exams you give in your life this moment Remains the exact same the anxiety before opening your result and with great courage and anxiety I opened up the all India Kota round one list and looked up my role number and there it was my friends it was MD medicine GMC nakur my dream branch in my dream College in my dream City in the

6:49 first round of coning I had failed only four choices and the remaining three were just there to be supportive otherwise I would have just filled one but I was so happy that I got it at that moment I thanked God and I thanked my parents that they were supportive of me throughout my journey you know it's really difficult to crack the nug exam similar is the level of the need PG exam over here the competition is not that much but the syllabus is extensive it's huge and when I was just starting the preparation during internship I never knew whether I would be able to get a rank I I did not know how much my GT scores would be and in internship I also had the pressure of keeping up with content creation because that's very important if you want to grow on any platform so while doing my jobs of internship which can be sometimes extend extensively tiring managing my content creation which is something Uncharted and lastly studying for my n PG exam

7:35 these were the three things I had to do at the same time and at the same time I did I proved to the world that you can be plur poent you can be whatever you want to be and that if you work really hard there is nothing in the world that can actually stop you from achieving what you want in the last year we crossed a million subscribers on YouTube I completed my internship and I also cracked my neat PG exam what more to ask for all this was because of sheer amount of hard work and consistency with ECT to studies all the young students who are watching I want you to take an inspiration and I want you to study extremely hard for whatever exam that you're aiming towards because trust me the moment the result comes and the moment you're allot at the dream college and the dream branch in your dream City your parents feel so proud you feel so proud everyone that you love feels so proud and there is no feeling in the world that can match that but my friends

8:21 how did I actually arrive at medicine there were so many core clinical branches available we had surgery we had obgy we had Pediatrics Ortho why only medicine now let me tell you a bit about how exactly I narrowed this down you know I entered the hospital Ward for the first time when I was a second year mbbs student I also documented that on YouTube in a Story Time episode and when we entered for the first time I saw the grand rounds happening I saw the rounds which were going to happen with a huge team of doctors and I saw a few doctors over there who were in those very long white coats they had all gray hair they had a black Litman St the scope around their neck they were clean shaven and they were going to the Patient to Patient and seeing their vitals seeing all the different things examining them and man that was that was a sight to be S that was a sight to behold and that's where my dream actually started that I

9:08 want to be a physician that only kept on growing every time I was posted in a department whenever it was medicine or surgery we tried to do double postings in the morning and the evening in the morning we used to be taking the cases in the evening we used to be discussing with the residents and it felt so good reading about the intricate details of the human body that only solidified further in final year when I started watching Rakesh n s's video the way he taught medicine was something which was very very beautiful to me I was always interested in medicine but Rakesh sir had a very huge role to play in my life to choosing medicine I think the image of the subject that you develop directly correlates to the teacher that taught you that subject if a teacher is very well versed with the subject and teaches you with enthusiasm you catch on to that enthusiasm and you become interested yourself and up until final year MD medicine and probably Endocrinology in the future was my dream Branch I even

9:54 said it in a video of course as you go along the journey you find other branches as well which are exciting for me I personally still find ENT very very exciting lastly when I was a final year student I was on a plane from Europe back to India and in that plane a very good lady suffered something called as gulen bar syndrome and that was the moment where I decided I shall be able to treat all of these diseases I shall be able to diagnose them on time and I shall be able to improve the lives of these people who are suffering from these diseases there are small small moments in your life that happened they slowly and slowly nudge you towards your destiny and you don't see them coming so up till now everything is is all set till medicine and then my internship starts in my internship I enter my surgery posting and my trauma posting and that's when the confusion begins as an intern it is supposed to be said that you will find the branch that you love

10:40 in internship but in my internship I got confused as to which branch do I actually want I loved the aggressive aspect of surgery I loved how quick the response was I loved the I loved every single aspect about surgery literally still till this day I feel like surgery is something which is the best like only the best of the best of the best people should become the best surgeons because they can literally change lives in matter of hours imagine somebody suffering from a breast cancer and you are able to die diagnose it detect it and remove it changing that person's life forever or maybe someone suffering from a brain tumor and then a neurosurgeon comes in and saves their life removes all the pressure symptoms from their brains and improve their paralysis and that definitely requires a lot of Sacrifice from their end so even though I really loved surgery when I looked at the lives of surgeon in the long run I felt like the lifestyle did

11:25 not align with me passion is something you definitely have for one subject or one branch but you also have to consider what that Branch does to your life if you see both of these things only then will you be able to get a perfect answer if you like a branch very much like I love surgery I love I love rwan s's videos as much as I love Rakesh s's videos but the amount of effort it takes to get to that skill level where you can be a great surgeon is unprecedented it's a skill-based job it's not a knowledge based job it's it's about how fine your hands are it's about how you can manage the bleeding on spot it's about how you can diagnose it requires dedication and sacrifice and for surgery even though I loved it I am pretty sure I did not have that amount of dedication or sacrifice ability in me to take up surgery so even though I still love it till this day I gave up surgery because a lifestyle of medicine aligned with me very much yes I

12:12 was not going to be entering the OT anytime soon but I was able to see variety of cases I will be able to see more number of patients and by the virtue of modern medicine save a lot of lives in the future directly or indirectly with respect to the light of ranches there were two options we had Dermatology we had Radiology so I eliminated Radiology in the very first time itself because first of all I was really not interested in it I appreciate all the radio diagnosis people watching this video but I really don't have that much interest in it it's it's an excellent Branch it is one of the top most branches and when I was reading through the all India Kota counseling list it was just medicine and radio medicine radio medicine radio that's how the order was they've got more medicine seats that's why we saw a lot more medicine cut to cut if you say radio has got more competition than medicine so radio again takes the lead but somehow I

12:58 did not find that interesting then we came to that beautiful aspect of Dermatology yeah dermat is also great I loved the posting of it but the thing was after talking to a lot of residents after talking to a lot of Consultants I got a feedback that yes it's a beautiful Branch but you will be restricted to treating skin conditions all your life and even though dermat has a lot of correlations with the other systems its primary cases that you're going to be seeing are going to be Unis systemic that is that is with the Skin So comparing both of these I had one aspect of medicine where I get to learn every single system in detail like that's the highest amount of knowledge you can get about the human body is when you specialize in medicine and the other was dmat where you can actually really impact the patient's life when you go into cosmetology and treating serious conditions in dermat also but you are still respected to far less clinical entities than medicine so with all of this the stage was set and I decided MD

13:45 medicine now why GMC nakur I think that deserves a separate video on itself let me know if you want to watch it that why did I choose GMC nakur but yes I'm very very happy with respect to what my choice is and I'm really happy that as a physician in the future I will be able to get you more education content with respect to how you can improve your health and not just that I'll be able to tell you better case histories better case stories and simply an elevated experience while you're watching my videos medicine is an extremely competitive field to get into and I'm so happy and thankful for your support throughout my journey in the end with respect to the bran selection criteria we was sitting in a cafe in Delhi and zenab ma'am I was asking what branch should I take and she told me something which I'll never forget taking a branch is like arranged marriage arranged marriage may you select each other and then throughout your life you have to support each other and you will in the end fall in love so I guess no branch is

14:31 perfect for no student and whatever you're looking for in life a branch will never be able to offer you exactly 100% of it it might get to 99.9 but never 100% And I feel like pros and cons are available in every single Branch but again it's an arranged marriage and even though I'm still in love with medicine I hope I fall in love with it again when are you it in detail so yes with that thank you so much for watching my video and if you're still watching please make sure to subscribe man yeah what are you doing you're watching till the end but you're not subscribing just click that subscribe button to show your support thank you so much much it's your boy Dr and I'll catch you in the next one bye [Music]
