"Believing the Finished Works of Christ"

Brief Summary

In this sermon, Creflo Dollar discusses the importance of believing in the finished works of Christ, particularly His death on the cross. He explains that believers often fail to fully grasp and embrace what was accomplished through Christ's sacrifice. The sermon breaks down the finished work of Christ into three key concepts: propitiation (satisfying God's wrath), redemption (freedom from enslavement to sin), and reconciliation.

  • Believing in the finished works of Christ is essential for experiencing the full benefits of salvation.
  • Jesus's death on the cross was a complete payment for sins, past, present, and future.
  • Understanding propitiation, redemption, and reconciliation helps believers grasp the depth of Christ's sacrifice.

Introduction

The program is brought by the partners and friends of Creflo Dollar Ministries. The sermon focuses on believing that sins are forgiven through the blood of Jesus and the grace of God, which are more powerful than any sin. It encourages listeners to have faith in God, regardless of their circumstances, and to recognize the availability of God's grace.

Believing the Finished Works of Christ

The sermon begins by addressing why believers don't experience the full benefits of their faith, suggesting it's due to a lack of belief. The core message emphasizes that God asks us to believe in the finished works of Christ, primarily His death on the cross. Many believers don't fully understand what was finished on the cross. The cross represents where Christ endured God's judgment against our sin, acting as a substitute for humanity.

Judgment and Substitution

Referencing John 12:31-32, the sermon explains that Jesus took on the judgment of the world, drawing all judgment to Himself when lifted up on the cross. This act was a gift, preventing humanity from being destined for hell. Jesus became our substitute, taking on every sin, sickness, and judgment. He could not have been our savior without first being our substitute through suffering and death on the cross.

Three Words Describing the Finished Work

Three words describe the finished works of Christ: propitiation, redemption, and reconciliation. Propitiation deals with God's wrath, which was prevalent in the Old Covenant where God acted as a judge. Propitiation means to satisfy wrath through a sacrifice, a sin offering, compensation, payment, and a peace offering, ultimately a ransom paid to satisfy God's justice. Jesus was the propitiation, paying the ransom so believers would no longer face God's wrath.

Propitiation Explained

Before Jesus, the wages of sin was death, as stated in Romans 6:23. God's justice demanded death for sin. However, Jesus's sacrifice provided the gift of eternal life through Him. Referencing James 1:15, the sermon explains that before Jesus, lust conceived sin, and sin brought forth death. Romans 3:25 and 1 John 2:2 are cited to reinforce that Jesus is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world, making anyone who accepts Him a beneficiary of this ransom. 1 John 4:10 emphasizes that God sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

The End of God's Wrath

Jesus took humanity's sin upon Himself and suffered God's righteous judgment, satisfying God's anger against sin. Now that the ransom has been paid, God no longer holds wrath against us. Without this, we would die and go to hell. The sin meter was shut down when Jesus became the propitiation, meaning there is no longer a record of our sins.

Redemption: Freedom from Enslavement to Sin

Redemption deals with our enslavement to sin. To redeem means to buy out of and remove from, taking sin out of the market. Jesus bought the market out, so sin is no longer available. In the context of salvation, redemption refers to Christ setting us free from the bondage of sin, slavery, and its consequences.

Redemption from the Curse of the Law

Galatians 3:13 states that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, which was a curse for not perfectly obeying the law. Jesus delivered us from this curse by becoming a curse for us. He kept every aspect of the law, doing what we could not do. Galatians 4:5 explains that Jesus came to redeem those under the law so that we might receive the adoption of sons, transitioning from servants to sons.

Forgiveness of Sins: Past, Present, and Future

Ephesians 1:7 states that we have redemption through Jesus's blood and the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace. God has forgiven our sins—past, present, and future. Even sins committed in the future were in God's past when Jesus died on the cross. The only one remembering our sins is often ourselves. It's important to believe that our sins are forgiven, as the blood of Jesus and the grace of God are more powerful than our sin.

The Importance of Belief

1 Peter 1:18-19 emphasizes that it is up to us to believe in this forgiveness. Regardless of how we feel, believing changes our lives. Doubting whether our sins are forgiven creates and nourishes sin consciousness. The sermon promotes a three-message series, "Only Believe," which reveals Jesus as our only solution. Holy living is the objective of grace, but it starts with believing right.

Ministry Support and Invitation to Salvation

The ministry expresses gratitude for financial contributions that support their vision of reaching the world with the gospel of grace. The sermon concludes with a prayer of salvation, inviting viewers to receive Jesus into their hearts and declare themselves saved.

2:24 John chap 19 verse 28-30. St. John chapter 19 and verse 28-30. He says, "And after this Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, he saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar, and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon the histel, and put it to his mouth." When Jesus therefore had received the

3:11 vinegar, he said, "It is finished." And he bowed his head and he gave up the ghost. This morning I want to share with you from the subject of believing the finished works of Christ. believing the finished works of Christ. My grandson said to me the other day, he says, "What's going on with the body of Christ? What's happening with the church? Why are they not seeing some of the stuff they say?" And my response to him was, "It's

3:57 because the believers are not believing. This is the one thing God requested of us is that we would believe. And we keep trying to add to that when he said believe. And the scripture says when they were trying to figure out how to do all the works of miracles after they saw the multiplication of the bread and the fish and they said, "We want to do these mighty works as well." And the response in one translation says, "The only work I want you to do is to believe in the one that I sent you." How many believers do I have in

4:43 the house this morning? Okay. So, we want to deal with believing the finished works of Christ. The finished works of Christ refers primarily to his death on the cross. What was finished on the cross. There was something accomplished. When we hear those three words, it is finished. A lot of believers just really don't know what is it that was finished. And then we begin to articulate uh religiously, you know, our sins and eternal life. And we say those things, but we really don't have a real good revelation of what it is. What is it that was finished? What is it that we need to begin to

5:31 believe? Now, the cross, that's where the judgment of God against our sin was endured by Christ on that cross. In fact, in the book of St. John in the King James, if you'll turn there, St. John 12 and verse 31 through32. There was something that was said here. I don't know if a lot of people really got it, but he says, "Now is the judgment of this world." Colon, which means he's getting ready to follow with a list of stuff. Now is the judgment of this world. The subject is judgment. Now is the judgment of this world. The subject is judgment.

6:16 Now shall the prince of the world be cast out, and I, if I, be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. Now, the word men in most of your Bibles is in italicized. It's because it didn't appear in the original Greek transcript. The subject is judgment. And when he said, "And I if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all judgment unto me," or the referring to men's judgment. He said, "When they put me on that cross, every man's judgment I will draw to me. Everybody's judgment I will draw to

7:04 me." You got to understand that was a gift. We would all be destined for hell had he not got on that cross and took on every sin and every sickness and every judgment for every man that will come on the earth. He says, "I will I will be the substitute and I will take all of their excuse my English. I'm going to take all their mess and I'm going to put it on my body." He became our substitute in order to become our savior. He would have never been our savior had he not become our substitute. And so Jesus was not our

7:49 savior until he suffered and died for our sins on the cross. He was our savior when he died and suffered on the cross. How many you believe you have a savior today? My [Applause] God. Three words describe the finished works of Christ. Three words. First word, propitiation. Second word, redemption. Third word, reconciliation. Those are a lot of nice

8:35 sounding big words. Let's break it down because you need to know what happened on that cross. You need to know these words that describe the finished work of Christ. The first word, propitiation. This word deals with the wrath of God. It deals with the wrath that God had with man because of sin. Now in the old covenant, you see God as a judge. Things happened to people because of his wrath against sin. And men would

9:22 die if they complained. At one point, God said, "Don't even touch the bottom of the mountain. you're gonna die. And then he says, if you can't keep all of these commandments, you're going to be cursed and you're gonna die. That was the father who was a judge. Aren't you glad today we have a new covenant and we have we have God who is a father and not a judge. We have God who gives a life and not cursing. I am this word propitiation. It means to satisfy wrath by a sacrifice. Propitiation it's the sin

10:08 offering. It means the compensation. It means the payment. Propitiation. It means the peace offering. It literally means a ransom that was paid to satisfy this wrath. My goodness. Jesus was the propitiation. He paid the ransom to satisfy the justice of God. He paid the ransom so that you and I will no long I know that's right. Somebody got

10:57 it. Look at this in Romans chapter 6 and 23. Something had to happen here. In 6 and 23 he says the wages of sin is death. That's what it was before Jesus died on the cross. The justice of God was like this. If you sin, you die. The way and I don't think people realize in the Old Testament, a lot of people died because God's a God of justice and he couldn't let you get away with this because it would put his integrity and justice on the line. He said, "The wages of sin is death." But because Jesus paid the ransom, because he paid the

11:43 compensation, because he was the compensation, because he was the sin offering, we now have the gift of God, which is eternal life, and we get that through the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. And amen. And amen. James chapter 1 and verse 15. Flip over there real quick. James 1:15. And I want you to get this. I want you to get this. We didn't come here just to have a little a little a little Easter bunny shout. Uh-uh. He says, "Then when lust hath conceived," here's how it was before

12:29 Jesus, "It brings forth sin. And then sin, when it is finished, it brings forth de bring forth death." There it is. There was just no other way that that's how it worked until Jesus showed up in the picture. Now, let's look at a couple of scriptures before we go on. Romans chapter 3 and verse 25, propitiation, the sin offering. He's the ransom that was paid to satisfy this sin debt. In Romans chapter 3:25, he says, "Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are passed through the forbearance of God." There

13:17 again you see that Jesus was our propitiation. And then in first John chapter 2 and verse two, understand this now. He says, "And he is the propitiation for our sin. He is the compensation for our sins. He is the ransom paid for our sins. He is the peace offering for our sins." Glory to God. And not for our sins only, but also for the sins of the whole world. So any man that's born on this planet that decides to accept and receive Jesus as Lord and personal savior, his sins have already been taken care of. He is now becoming a beneficiary of the ransom

14:02 that was paid to set him free from sin. My goodness. First John chapter 4 and verse 10. 1 John chapter 4 and verse 10. Herein is love, not that we love God, but that he loved us. And watch this love. And he sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins. He sent Jesus to be the the sin offering. He sent Jesus to be the peace offering. He sent Jesus to be the compensation. He sent Jesus to be He Jesus was the ransom. Jesus didn't pay a ransom. He was the ransom.

14:47 that was paid. My gosh. Jesus took humanity's sin upon himself and he suffered the righteous judgment of God. And Jesus not only died to take away man's sin debt, but he satisfied God's anger against sin, which means that God doesn't have this wrath anymore. against us. Now that the the the the ransom has been paid, glory be to God, and the sin offering has been given. You need to understand something. If this had not taken

15:35 place, you would die and go to hell. That's it. I I I don't think we understand sometimes. Oh, yeah. Right, right, right. Yeah, that's fine until you die. But you know when you're going to really appreciate this? When you die and you don't go to a hell and you don't deal with the wrath of God and you thank Jesus for being the ransom that's paid for all of our sins. I know it's kind of hard to figure out sometimes, but he paid for your sin. The sin meter was shut down when Jesus showed up as the propitiation. There is no meter keeping up with your sins no more. Glory be to God. Nobody's reading

16:21 the meter anymore because Jesus says, "I'm going to take all of your mess upon [Applause] myself." That's the first word. and it dealt specifically with the wrath of God. And Jesus satisfied that wrath. Here's the second word, redemption. Not only was he the ransom that was paid, but the redemption. Now, redemption deals with our enslavement to sin. We were enslaved into sin. To redeem means to buy out

17:07 of. It means to remove from. It literally means to buy out of and remove from the market in order to sit at liberty. See, there's no your sin is no longer in the market. Jesus showed up and bought the market out. And anybody shows up and says, "Well, where is the sin?" They say, "We apologize, but it's sold out." Got a man showed up and bought everybody's sin in the market, and we no longer carry it any longer. You don't hear [Applause]

17:53 me now. In the context of salvation, redemption refers to the work of Christ in setting us free from the bondage of sin slavery and all of its awful consequences. See, as people who were enslaved in sin, there was a consequence for being in that slavery. Look at Galatians chapter 3 and verse 13. Galatians chapter 3 and verse 13 he says Christ has redeemed us. He has delivered us from the curse that that comes from

18:40 not being able to keep the law. The curse of the law was this. That under the law, if you could not perfectly obey the law, there would be a curse. A blessing if you could obey it. A curse if you could not obey it. Well, the blood of Jesus did this. He says, "I am here to deliver you from the curse of not being able to keep all the law. Y'all don't y'all don't hear me. Yeah. And you may complain, but I bought you out. You're not going to fall dead. I am here to deliver you from the curse that comes with with without being

19:28 able to keep the law. He says, "Being made a curse for us." So what did he do? He said, "I'm going to instead of you having to be cursed for not being able to keep the law, I'm going to receive your curse and then I'm going to keep every jot and tit of the law. You couldn't keep it all, but I can." So he says, "Step aside, little brother, little sister. I'm getting ready to do what you could not do, and I'm getting ready to take what was due to you, and I'm going to put it on myself. Yet, I've never I've never broken the law. And yet, I will keep every bit of the law, but I'm showing up for you only. I want you to know that I love you. I want you to know that I'll be your savior. I want you to know that I'll set you free. And today, no more

20:16 curse. [Applause] Oh, Jesus. Look at uh verse four. Same same book, same chapter. Well, well, Galatians 4:5. Galatians 4:5. I want you to see these scriptures. But at the end of this, it's all about do you believe it? Verse 5 says to to redeem them. He came here to redeem them that were under the law. to redeem them that were under the law. that we might receive the adoption of sons. We're no longer servants. We're

21:03 sons. Under the old covenant, they were servants. Under this new covenant, we're sons. Ephesians chapter 1 and 7. Yeah. Taking the time to look at these, you you must be convinced that without Jesus, we're nothing. You must be convinced that your righteousness is not going to be enough. You're going to have to be righteous with the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Jesus has got to be your righteousness. Verse seven says, "In whom we have what?" Redemption. How did we get it? Through his blood. We got the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace. We have the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace.

21:49 Now, I know that there are a lot of messy things in the lives that are represented here, but I want to really encourage you. God has forgiven you of your sins. Watch this. Now, this is the part that gets people. He has forgiven you of your sins, past, present, and future. Now, you all believe that he forgave you of your sins in the past. But your sins were in the past were in his future when he did it. Y'all don't hear me. He forgave you of your past sins, but he for but he but it was your future. So you know people say, "Well, how he going to forgive you of your future sins?" He already has.

22:37 In the past when he he died on that cross and you were not even thought about. You were not even formed into a fetus. In the past when he did all of this for you, you hadn't even born. So, he took care of your future in in the past, which means in your present. And you got to believe that that the only person right now that keeps remembering your sin is you. And right now, you got to believe that my sins are forgiven. Somebody says, "But you don't understand what I did on the way here." Your sins are forgiven. The blood of Jesus is more powerful than your sin. The grace of God is more powerful than your sin. I'm talking church, rejoice because his

23:22 blood has taken care of your sins, past, present, and future. My goodness. 1 Peter 1 18 and 19. This is in the book and and it's up to you to believe it. Now, you can debate about it and play these weird games with it, but regardless how you feel, this is how it is. And if you believe it, your whole life changes. But if you keep walking around wondering if you going to go to heaven, wondering if your sins have been forgiven, you're creating and nourishing your sin

24:10 consciousness. Avoid the danger of non-belief. There is an ongoing battle inside our minds that makes it more important than ever to reject the false solutions the world offers.
