9:12 show and that was at that weird time were like everything with the sub came off Funimation and what to crunchyroll and everything with the dub went from control to Funimation yes it went bad that happened it went back and then roll for a bit but back to crunchy roll for a bit so that it came back off crunchy roll and back to Funimation and then sometime early 2019 there was just an ominous tweet that said how do you say selamat pagi in english to which everybody in their goddamn mom flipped the [ __ ] out I flipped the [ __ ] out to which I would like to reference an episode that we did many years ago on Kobayashi's dragon made before both nichijou and yoga were licensed by Funimation to which point Megan and I debated could you even

23:56 also uh but she also really my mom kind of came in like towards the the latter half of the show but like even she seemed to kind of like get into the into it she didn't really understand the humor but she she likes the heart the heart of the show and I think it's like there's a line that mio has where she's like saw Sahara told me that every day is like a set of like miracles or something and I think like that to me that moment with what with me Oh kind of later in the series really cap culminates the whole like part of the show where it's like yeah all this queer crazy shit's happening but at the end of the day like these characters really do care about each other so hmm I think it's I think it's one of the best stubs that came out of last year and honestly as somebody who's who wasn't who didn't

26:16 being very over the top which nichijou does a lot in its Japanese but it's a very Japanese title of humor the show's called ordinary life which means that in order to know what it is that they're subverting in the show itself you need to kind of understand some things about regular Japanese life one little example which may go over your head if you're not familiar with regular Japanese school life is their classroom is classroom one cue that may not seem like much but that mean in Japan the letters correspond to the number of classes there are so usually you have like classes a through E usually Q implies that there are 18 classes or the freshmen class and that is just bizarre which I mean maybe maybe it's the school the size of Rhode Island but I actually never knew that okay

27:02 yeah so that that little thing that little detail of like this is not normal may go over your head if you don't know what was normal to begin with so how to translate that into English I think Howard Wang deserves all of the praise on this because not only does he have some really good puns and he makes he makes the best kinds of translations to English that is possible but he also keeps the integrity of the non comedic moments as well because there are scenes where the characters are trying to be just trying to like show how sincere they are how BIRT broken down they are and that the series Nev loses the heart of what those characters are coming through there's parts where my is absolutely deadpan and they don't

27:48 play her up her you know they don't play up for acting at all to try to make it more comedic it's just a very deadpan soft-spoken voice that makes you think is she mad at me I why isn't she talking to me why is she getting my puns at all or Sakamoto's trying to cope with the fact that whichever one of them I go with my life sucks at just the billions of little are tiny things there I think Howard's writing was absolutely gray on this I'm not as huge of a fan on the direction of it mostly not because of any of the acting itself but because a lot of the actors in this are keeping their mostly their normal speaking voices like the kind of like they're not putting on cartoony act back tations to a lot of their there's a couple that are

28:34 but for most of them it kind of sounds like they're their everyday voice and because that lack of diversity and the cast on how they sound it's a little hard to differentiate some of the characters from each other and with a show that's this wacky and over-the-top and in Japanese had a lot of archetypes clashing against each other that's kind of hoping for a few more archetypes thrown into this to add to that diversity but we'll get more into that with the actual characters themselves as for the just the dub on the whole this was the impossible task this this was the white whale of the dubbing anything and I can't think of a way they could have done this much better than how they did pulled it this off Morgan's words words words words words this show is weird Wow I can't believe a show called by ordinary life is anything but who'd have

30:52 would post the scene of the kids freaking out about their test being over any time I finished finals like I would just post that clip on Facebook and just be like hey files are done guys and everyone's like I'm dreaming I must be dreaming it's like I can still vividly I vividly remember how characters sounded in Japanese years later this was gonna be a big task to kind of differentiate what I associate with nichijou and Japanese to in English and that was going to be a hard task in general no matter who they got or what they did and honestly I'm damn impressed that they did what they did the English cast is also really interesting I want to give Krupp I want to give praise to Jade and her assistant directors because there's a pretty

31:39 interesting cast of characters I believe Jade is one of the directors who regularly does auditions for things still at Funimation and given this one was a home video project you actually could have the time to do auditions and stuff and like they might been working on this for like several months without being able to talk about it but you've got a pretty interesting cast not that some of these are actors you don't get to hear do too much or have it shown up a lot and some are regular veterans and some are really doing interesting unique things and I'm pretty sure everybody in Funimation was in the booth to be an extra at some point just because there's a lot of [ __ ] characters in this goddamn show but you have a pretty unique cast of characters the core cast is really interesting the main

32:26 characters though they are perfect I feel the core humor is represented in very interesting ways the delivery of these actors is phenomenal hilarious and genuinely cracked me up and some of their delivery has stuck out for me maybe even more so than the Japanese and the script I I could spend a lot of time praising mr. Howard Wang instead I would like to I would like to talk about just simply explain my favorite scene that was changed in English that made me realize this dub is a masterpiece and Howard Wang did the impossible and made it possible I'm a cat check me out
