Brief Summary
This video features a panel of Doctor Who actors and contributors discussing their favorite episodes and experiences with the show. They share specific stories, highlight the collaborative spirit of the production, and reflect on the unique aspects of working on Doctor Who. Key takeaways include the importance of team spirit, the impact of individual performances, and the lasting memories created by the show's diverse and ambitious storytelling.
- Team spirit and collaboration were essential to the success of many Doctor Who stories.
- Individual performances, especially those of the Doctors and companions, left a lasting impact.
- The show's diverse settings and ambitious storytelling created unique and memorable experiences for the cast and crew.
One of the panelists favorite episode is "Space Parents," praising its quality and enjoyability. He also highlights "The Demons" from 1971 as a personal favorite, emphasizing the excellent team spirit prevalent during his stories. He acknowledges the contributions of Katy Manning as Jo Grant, the Master, the Brigadier, Sergeant Benton, Captain Yates, writer Barry Letts (under the name Guy Leopold), and director Christopher Barry.
Another panelist recalls enjoying the designs in "The Ark in Space" and a giant rat from another episode. He also liked "Earthshock" for Eric Saward's writing, but ultimately favors "Caves of Androzani" by Robert Holmes. He praises the classic writing, brilliant cast, and great director, humorously noting the exception of the last 30 seconds where he transforms into Colin Baker.
One of the speakers shares that as a viewer, his favorite story is "The Empty Child," written by Steven Moffat, which he found terrifying. He considers it Moffat's best work.
One of the speakers expresses that he is not a fan of picking favorites. He appreciates Patrick Troughton's role in "The Two Doctors," recognizing Troughton as the actor who faced the challenge of the first regeneration. He believes Troughton's genius made the program's longevity possible. He also shares a personal connection, having shared a flat with Troughton's son, David, and being David's best man.
One of the speakers favorite episode to film was the one with the Daleks. He explains his philosophy of the Doctor using his brain rather than brawn, especially important for a show watched by children. When given a script with a bazooka, he refused to use it, giving Ace the fun of blowing things up. In revenge, the writer gave him a very long speech to talk a Dalek to death.
One of the speakers favorite story from his time with Big Finish is "sh," which he credits with getting the ball rolling. He also enjoyed working with Sheridan Smith and Ruth Bradley in "Dark Eyes." He particularly liked the two Steven Moffat episodes, "The Doctor Dances" and "The Empty Child," feeling that Moffat wrote well for his Doctor.
One of the speakers finds it hard to pick favorites because each episode was so different, with varied locations, guest casts, and settings. He mentions episodes set in Pompeii, on the moon, 5 billion years in the future, and in Victorian Scotland. Leaving the show was sad because he knew he would never have an experience quite like it again.
One of the speakers doesn't have a favorite either, but mentions "Tomb of the Cybermen" as a funny and scary episode, particularly highlighting the Cybermen's brilliance in that story.
One of the speakers shares that one of the most fun episodes for him is the last episode of "Frontier in Space". He also mentions "Ark in Space" as a fabulous story where Tom Baker takes hold of the part. He also mentions "The 10th Planet" with the original Cybermen and "The Web Planet".
One of the speakers says that she doesn't like to pick favorite episodes, but she would say her first episode, "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" because it gave her the best entrance ever into any character. She loved the transition of finding the doctor, finding who she wanted to be, finding the chemistry with the other actors, the hero speech, creating the costume and look.
One of the speakers jokingly says that Christmas 2023 is his favorite episode.

0:00 but the one I I like very much was uh space parents and most of that is gone unfortunately she a very good one that very enjoyable one of the joys of presenting this selection is being able to choose my own personal favorite episode but it didn't take me long to decide I've chosen an episode from the 1971 Story the demons now in many ways this is an example of the excellent team spirit which featured so heavily during many of my stories on the acting side I'm joined by Katy Manning as Joe Grant one of my favorite companions the master the Brigadier Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates and on the production side it was
0:45 written by Barry LZ the producer under the pen name of guy Leopold and directed by Christopher Barry all in all my doctor who family um I don't know that I have a favorite episode I remember being asked that before I do remember enjoying particularly the designs I think in uh a story called The Ark in space which I thought was very well designed and I remember something about a giant rat that I liked as well yeah for many episodes it was earthshock um I liked ER Eric seawood he was a script editor I thought his writing was particularly good but I suppose in the end it was eclipsed by um
1:30 caves of andreani uh which was a Robert holes story so it was a really classic uh uh um piece of Doctor Who writing and we had a brilliant cast and we had a great director apart from the last 30 seconds when I turned into Colin Baker I would say that was my favorite story I think as a viewer I'll answer as a viewer my favorite story was probably the empty child which will I just terrifying as Steven muffett wrote the story uh um the case of an Des did beat it his best story ever but never mind it's yeah I think the Mt time was great story what was your favorite story to film while you were on the television show I I'm not a great fan of the FW
2:18 favorite okay but the fact that Patrick trouton was in two doctors I'll say that because for me he was the man who did the the hardest job of the lot the first regeneration whichever idea that was I don't know but that first regeneration is the one that made it possible for the program to last as long as it had if the second doctor had not been the genius that Pat traon was he wouldn't be sitting here talking to the sixth and there wouldn't be a 12th and he was a lovely man I'd shared a flat with his son for years David tra uh who was in two or three episodes of Dr two three different stories um and so I knew
3:04 Pat I was David's best man when he got married so I met Patrick trouton then and doing the two doctors with him was just wonderful such a good actor what was your favorite episode to film I mean I suppose my favorite in a way was the one with the dialects because I didn't really feel I was true doctor I taken on the dialects um and when when they gave me the the script in it uh they had me with Bazookas blowing up dialects and My Philosophy when I got Doctor Who was that my doctor being an alien um would use his brain rather than his Brawn and that was to me very important and also thought that was a very good list because we have lots of children watch Doctor Who like you know here in Britain
3:51 as well and it was that kind of thing of not celebrating violence although entertainment needs violence so they gave me a Booka said no I I'm not going to use a bazooka but Ace can so she had all the fun actually of blowing people up and I didn't but but that was the thing so uh a got all all that fun really so uh but then as a Revenge the last bit where I destroy a dialect at the very end of it the again the it said in the script I had the Bazooka and I said no no I don't I don't do that I don't do that and then so the writer went away and in his revenge he wrote me a very very long speech I had to talk the dialect to death so I had to learn the
4:37 lines do you personally have a favorite companion or story from your time with big finish yes yeah the favorite story is sh okay uh just because like really got the ball rolling for and it was just d as script that you know and it had a bit of History it was great um but later on when I got to work with sherid and Smith uh I was really happy fantastic so there's your answer but I don't want to I don't want to let the others down oh no I think this present uh I don't know if how many of you follow dark eyes but Ruth Bradley is
5:23 fantastic fantastic yeah where are you are and I particularly liked the DAR episode dramatically I had a lot to do there and I liked the two Steven mofet episodes the doctor dances and the empty child um I felt Steven roll for my doctor particularly well so I felt like I had the bullets to fire what was my favorite episode to do do you know it's so hard to pick favorites because they were also different it's not like filming like with other shows that that I that I filmed shows that I love but you kind of you can't necessarily differentiate what
6:08 each episode is because they're sort of part of an ongoing story that we're that use the same locations or whatever each episode of Doctor Who was so different one of them was on in Pompei one of them was on the moon one of them was in uh set 5 billion years in the future one of them was set in in Victoria in Scotland so every episode I I had had a different guest cast so it feels wrong to choose favorites really because um each one was such an exciting time that's part of why it was such a it was so sad to leave because you knew you were never going to have an experience quite like that anywhere else um it so I I I sort of don't pick favorites because as soon as I pick a favorite I I'll let think oh no actually that other one's my favorite um
6:56 it was uh they're all my favorite what your um I don't have a favorite either mine is probably just because I think it's funny you know with the same sort of monsters that come back and sometimes I think we don't always make them better which which you know which we try to but um uh Tomb of the Cybermen it's a p travel episode and um I think the Cybermen particularly sort of brilliant in that really and really really scary so it's always been a favorite one of mine one of the most fun episodes for me is the last episode of Frontier in space the final episode when the doctor discovers that he's been caught up in a
7:42 web of intrigue it's a classic Doctor Who story with classic Doctor Who villains and also a fabulous moment where John per uses the telepathic Circuit of the TARDIS it's the first time I remember actually seeing it being used that's a great episode I think aren space is a fabulous story it's Tom Baker's Second Story and he absolutely takes a hold of the part and makes it his completely in that episode but it's a wonderful base Under Siege story it is very much what Doctor Who is about in the sense that its ambition is sort of greater than the resources available to it but the ideas are very potent and delicious and wonderful and live with you the 10th planet with the original
8:28 Cybermen in it um has some great moments bits of the web Planet which of course is Dr Hite its most sort of Festival of Britain is with the with strange kind of actors doing strange kind of movement and mind the incredible ambition to try and render an insect world uh on basically what looked like a budget of 15 pounds a week uh was immensely successful what well my favorite fav favorite episode um I don't like to pick uh uh favorite episodes uh so I would say my first episode because I
9:14 arrived I was U wondering what your um favorite episode shooting was I think the one that really for me will always be the most precious is the woman who fell to wor because it was it gave me the best entrance ever ever into any character got my own little soundtrack when I stood up and it just the whole thing of it and also the transition of finding the doctor throughout and finding who I wanted to be and finding these guys and the chemistry and then the the hero speech of realizing and knowing who you are and then at the end of it kind of creating this costume and this look I absolutely loved it and I thought if this is our was starting this is just going to be the time of my life and it was a thank you for that question
