00 [Music] when we take out our favorite episodes of doctor who from our dvd shelf we don't really think about how it got there in the first place when we look at the web of fear we don't think about lies scandals and theft we think about yetis in the underground but sometimes how these stories came back and made their way onto your dvd shelf is a much more thrilling story after archive selector sue molden had compiled what remained of doctor who at the bbc it was time to explore outwards what did film collectors have does somebody have a copy of a missing episode sitting in their attic unwatched and unaware of its value and more importantly could we get them back to the archive this is the story of how those episodes came home
59 [Music] our first return comes from the land down under australia three episodes of doctor who episode 1 of the chase episode 2 of the war machines and episode 1 of the faceless ones were in the hands of a private collector there are rumors that these were stolen from the abc but no substantiated evidence has been able to prove that since these episodes were marked to be white it is being assumed that someone decided to take them before they were junked david g who owned them in 1977 copied the episodes onto matic videotape and sent them to a friend in england in exchange for some more recent episodes
44 jeremy bentham his friend showed them to ian levine who noticed that war machines too was missing in the archive ian contacted david who made a film copy of the print and levine returned it to the bbc to make a copy in 1978 sue decided to return to villia's house and by chance stumbled upon a new delivery of 16 millimeter films that had been returned from an international broadcaster she noticed that episode 1 of the web of fear was included the only doctor who episode in the batch it was at this point sue ordered any return material to be sent to the film and videotape library and nothing was to be junked
37 bbc canada returned their copy of episode 1 of death to the daleks to the bbc in 1981. more on that later roger stevens a film editor working at the bbc and longtime doctor who fan was carpooling with a co-worker who has wished to remain anonymous the topic of doctor who came up and roger's friend mentioned that he had collected a number of 16 millimeter film prints he worked as a projectionist at the bbc and had access to this material and had seven doctor who film prints in his collection roger was aware that ian levine was purchasing episodes of doctor who missing or otherwise and asked his
24 friend if he would be willing to sell these prints to ian an agreed amount of 25 pounds was met and two out of the seven were missing episodes these missing episodes were the abonible snowman episode 2 an invasion of the dinosaurs episode 1. ian levine loaned his copy of episode 2 of the obama snowman to the bbc to make a 16 millimeter copy but curiously ian held on to episode one of invasion of the dinosaurs more on that later [Music] doctor who monthly the precursor to doctor who magazine reported the return of episode six of
10 the reign of terror bruce campbell a regular attendee at sci-fi collect affairs was aware of missing episodes of doctor who through his friend jeremy bentham he heard through the great find that the reign of terror episode 6 was currently for sale for 50 pounds bruce borrowed the film print and tested it on his friend's 16 millimeter projector to prove it was what the seller claimed it to be once it was confirmed he purchased it doctor who monthly describes the return of the episode reminiscent of spy films the can of 16mm film was picked up from a railway station in a fast car and whisked away to the bbc's film library for sue morden to arrange a copy to be made for the bbc's retention but campbell and levine described it a little less
56 exciting ian levine and bruce campbell allegedly spent six months negotiating with the private collector but eventually it was handed to levine who then in turn returned to the bbc who duplicated it you know how he mentioned invasion of the dinosaurs episode 1 was found but never returned well i think it's time to come back to this little drama when e levine purchased roger steven's collection of doctor who episodes a black and white version of episode 1 of invasion the dinosaurs was included ian was well aware that this episode was missing from the archive and at this time it was the only pert we episode left missing ian decided to hold onto this
42 print to use as a bargaining chip in case a different missing episode turned up that he'd prefer eventually he decided that he should return the episodes to the bbc and he did so two years after he first received it we'll discuss the missing and recovered pearly episodes in depth and explain why this episode is in black and white a little later on we start in a basement of the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints in wandsworth a clean-out is occurring when they stumble upon six film cans hiding in a corner an episode of warship an episode of adventure world two educational programs and two
28 episodes of a little-known science fiction show called doctor who a phone call to the bbc and eventually the episodes are in safe hands of steve bryant who has succeeded sue morden at this time as archive selector but the mystery remains how did they end up in a church well that's the account that doctor who monthly gave the doctor who appreciation society's newsletter said otherwise the doctor who appreciation society said that it was found in the basement of a mormon unification church in london but then again in the book dr who 25 glorious years they claim they were found in the newest temple of the mormon unification church of great britain in south london the first location in wandsworth exists
16 but the mormon unification church in london and south london doesn't exist so does this mean that the location reported in doctor who magazine is correct an interview with steve bryant in white explains that he never had correspondence with the church gareth morris the deputy head of the bbc film and videotape library did steve said that gareth mentioned it was a mormon church in passing but wasn't too interested in the details so it may never have been a mormon church in the first place but if it was which church was it why did they end up in a church in the first place was the church a converted bbc building and the film cairns were left behind we may never know the truth therefore it remains a mystery of the unexplained i think it's
03 important to mention that the memory cheats and one person couldn't possibly remember every little detail of something that happened decades ago because it was simply another day at work now back to my homeland of australia crikey it's episode 4 of the celestial toy maker is what was possibly said during a routine inspection of the film archive at the abc's french forest studios it was quickly sent to the bbc sydney office and then sent to bbc london and rested in the safe hands of steve bryant's apparently this copy of the celestial toy maker was not the print that screened to australian audiences in the 1960s
50 this copy was actually sent from singapore who was supposed to send it to bbc sydney after use but accidentally sent it to the abc studio in french forest which was also in sydney the abc decided to keep it in storage rather than send it to the bbc office this is just another instance of something being where it shouldn't be and thanks to them we now have one episode of the celestial toy maker compared to xero rumors of a patrick trouten story featuring cyber mats was first reported in doctor who monthly issue 87 with an anonymous letter the letter claims that a missing episode of doctor who
36 was being held in the portsmouth area who owned this mysterious print who wrote the letter and why did they mention cyber matt specifically in the fan community it was rumored that a person named david steed had a copy of a missing cybermatt episode this was first deduced by an off-screen image of a cybermat published in a fan magazine called time watcher sometime later private video copies of the episode were floating around the fan community but why wasn't it being returned to the bbc ian levine met with david steed and ian quickly doubted that david would return the episode to the bbc but he managed to persuade him to make a video copy for his own personal collection then more copies
23 were made and shared across the fandom one person who watched the episode was quite annoyed that it wasn't returned to the bbc and wrote the letter to doctor who monthly and that person was gary russell gary would later become editor of doctor who magazine executive producer of big finished productions and work on many doctor who related projects looking back gary regretted writing the letter saying it wasn't one of his finest moments but after the anonymous letter was published david returned the episode to the bbc he explained that back in february in 1983 he listed an advert in a local paper asking for 16 millimeter film prints of doctor who and one person replied saying they had some
08 the only episode he owned that was missing was the wheel in space episode 3 and bought it for 15 pounds he had planned to return the episode in the summer of 1983 but came down with the flu and couldn't return it until april 1984. david was quite upset by the anonymous letter at the time but stands by the fact he always wished to return it and believes that steven bryant would be able to confirm that he had spoken to the bbc archive months before the letter was published e levine began making inquiries overseas and eventually found some luck in nigeria his main contact was victoria eziocoli who spent a month searching for
55 them in the archive and she located a total of 14 episodes this was the first time completed stories had turned up instead of individual episodes out of the episodes found six were missing from the bbc's archive meaning that the time meddler and the war machines were finally complete but returning these episodes to the bbc was a bit harder than expected on july 5th 1984 umaro diku an ex-minister of the nigerian government was abducted from outside his home in london the police managed to stop the kidnapping when they discovered him with another man locked in a crate unconscious ready to be transported to nigeria two members of the nigerian high commission were expelled immediately
41 from the london embassy and diplomatic relations between britain and nigeria were broken off for two years this means the arrival of the doctor who film prince were delayed until early 1985 the following year for obvious reasons when they arrived they were surprised to notice that a series of cuts were made to the episodes and no one knew this better than ian levine ian levine already had a copy of episode 1 and episode 3 of the time meddler and had not returned them to the bbc he had them in his possession for quite some time at this point but how did he get them insurance a film projectionist at the bbc was a long-term fan of doctor who and friend of ian levine's when he worked at philia's house as a
27 film print examiner in the early 1980s he witnessed first hand the destruction of 16 millimeter doctor who film prints which had just arrived from overseas which episodes these were we will never know those responsible were reprimanded for destroying property they were told not to destroy but sherman found it hard to trust that people were doing the right thing he met a contact at the bbc's alexandra palace studios who knew of some doctor who episodes in private hands and those episodes ended up being episodes 1 2 and 3 of the time meddler ian levine convinced him to hand over the prince to him and then silence for a third time now ian had decided to hold on to missing material of doctor who he now had episode 1 of the invasion of
14 the dinosaurs episode 2 of the abolitive snowman and episodes 1 and 3 of the time meddler episode 2 was already in the archive ian levine's dedication to returning doctor who episodes to the bbc archive cannot be ignored and insists he kept onto these episodes for good reason he claims that many collectors wish to trade missing episodes for other missing episodes and that money wasn't the currency he held onto these just in case the moment came to do a trade for a different episode was he right to do so that's up to you to decide either way since the nigerian prince of the time medal was found he decided to finally return his original unedited versions to the bbc in 1992
02 a total of 11 years after first being discovered you know you wait forever for a batch of missing episodes to return and then two of the same batches come at once kind of in 1984 paul vanessa's who would later work with the doctor who restoration team was roughly 19 years old when he decided to hunt for missing episodes he had a discussion with his aunt and uncle from cyprus who were visiting him in the uk and asked them if they remembered watching any doctor who back in the 1960s they faintly recalled the series when he played back the title sequence and it inspired him to contact the
48 cypress broadcasting corporation asking if they held any doctor who prince in their archive to his surprise he received a response saying yes he organized his dad to have a meeting with the people at cbc because he happened to be on a business trip in cyprus at the time at the meeting they said that he needed written permission from the bbc to take the episodes home with him the trail ran cold well for about a month ian levine happened to be investigating cyprus at the time and had been working directly with roger bronskill from bbc enterprises and they made an official approach by the bbc for the return of these episodes within weeks the first three episodes of the reign of terror were returned to the bbc when paul later
36 visited the archive in cyprus in 1989 at this point he was working for the bbc he was looking through their books and discovered episodes four and five of the reign and terror were marked as destroyed apparently they weren't junked they were in a film archive which was blown up during a civil war the entire national film archive of cyprus was apparently destroyed in this explosion a huge loss episode 3 of the reign of terror was found again by bruce campbell this print was in higher quality than the version found in cyprus since it was discovered around the same time as the cypress vines
21 people weren't as interested so there's not much to say 26th of july 1985. the day before the panopticon convention an individual named syed mahum met with the convention organizers to discuss a screening he wished to hold after the convention at a nearby cinema he claims he was representing on behalf of an anonymous individual who had two missing episodes these episodes were the faceless ones episode 3 and the evil of the daleks episode 2. the convention organizers were dubious of the claims and they caught in someone who had a better insight ian levine they demanded that
07 saeed show some proof of the existence of these episodes and a guaranteed agreement that they would be returned to the bbc afterwards in order for panopticon to promote the events the screening was later cancelled it was later discovered that the individual who owned the episodes gordon hendry was unaware of their missing status and loaned them to saeed who saw an opportunity to make a little bit of cash out of them before returning the episodes to hendry he quickly realized that what he was doing was inappropriate and was unsure of where to turn next he contacted steve bryant from the bbc but because he didn't physically own the episodes there was nothing the bbc could really do unless gordon handed them over directly the trail ran
53 cold but paul vanessa's upon hearing about this story decided to make contact with saeed he offered him various old television programs to exchange with and built a bit of a relationship in 1987 paul was organizing a new convention known as telecon and they desperately wanted a missing episode to scream patrick trouten had recently passed away only a few weeks prior to this event and paul reached out to saeed to ask if he would be willing to screen one of the missing episodes as a tribute to patrick trouten two days before the event a vhs copy of the faceless ones episode three appeared the event organizers kept it completely secret and once the end credits rolled the lineup to the public telephones by
39 fans rushing to tell their friends is now considered a thing of legend at this point it was clear that gordon hendry couldn't keep his episodes a secret any longer and went into negotiations with the bbc and formally loaned the episodes in april and may of 1987. in the late 1980s the bbc enterprises location at villia's house had been cleared out and moved to a different department before the renovations were to take place a final thorough check of the property was held a bbc enterprises employee found a batch of 16 millimeter films which must have been forgotten years ago there were five film cans labelled
26 doctor who the ice warriors episodes 2 4 5 and 6 and also episode 6 of fury from the deep episode 2 of the ice warriors was actually episode 1 mislabeled and unfortunately fury from the deep episode 6 was actually a different program altogether that already existed in the bbc's archive after yet another extensive search no other film prints were found december 1991 a representative from asia television in hong kong contacted the bbc film and videotape library about returning some old bbc programs
11 including four episodes of doctor who the bbc archive selector at the time adam lee was unaware of which episodes of doctor who they actually were but requested them to send them back to the bbc he waited for the episodes to arrive but they never appeared bruce campbell had heard about these doctor who episodes and decided to do some follow-up david steed who was temporarily working for bbc enterprises in woodlands at the time was asked by bruce to have a little look around to see if they accidentally delivered them there by accident when he inspected the despatch area he found some packages the episodes had the label mm on them and when he went back to his office to inspect them further he noticed the leader of each film
57 saying the words the tomb of the cybermen there is a possibility that if david never found them they could have been lost to time forever since these episodes were returned to bbc enterprises the commercial firm rather than the bbc library david met a little internal dilemma by this time the vhs market for doctor who was booming and david knew if you returned the episodes to the bbc library there would be a possibility of the episodes being late to the fan circuit if he decided to hold on to them he could start the process of preparing the prince for vhs release knowing this release would be a bestseller for the doctor who range not only that since they would be the first to have their hands on it they
44 wouldn't be stuck with a duplicate print and have the original higher quality copy for the vhs release so he did just that he reminded adam that technically these prints were bbc enterprise's property well until he handed them over by 1999 the tomb of the cybermen was the 11th highest selling doctor who vhs at 30 000 sales [Music] new zealand 1974 a new zealand broadcasting corporation film storage unit in harriet street wellington was marking up film prints to be put in a landfill one of these films was episode 1 of the
30 crusade at the landfill a local film collector convinced the workers to let them take some of the film prints off their hands a total of 321 dispatch included this single doctor who episode the print changed hands over many years until it was eventually purchased by bruce grenville for five dollars in 1998. he was completely unaware that it was a missing episode and even included it on his personal website completely unnoticed by the bbc and doctor who fans alike until it was returned he showed the episode to a fellow doctor who fan cornelius stone who then told their friend neil lambis neil was the first to realize it was a missing episode and then they
16 contacted their friend paul scoons to organize a screening with bruce to verify his existence they contacted steve roberts at the bbc and explained the situation and how damaged the print was they sent a vhs camera copy of the episode to verify its existence after they assured bruce that he would get his original 16 millimeter copy returned to him after it was copied he agreed to send it to the bbc this is where it began to become tense bruce contacted various news stations about his discovery of the episode and mentioned that he would auction the print over the internet when it was returned to him and steve roberts wasn't very happy with that idea this was because technically this copy
01 should have been returned or junked after the rights expired he said it could lead to legal action being taken against him for trying to sell what could be considered stolen property bruce wasn't too happy about this and considered it a threat the bbc sent another letter saying that they are happy to consider this film print bruce's property and that he's free to sell it on if he's so pleased he eventually sold it for 850 us dollars but didn't receive any of the money due to the budget being spent on advertising [Music] in 1972 francis watson a bbc engineer was cleaning out a junk room at the bbc's ealing studios he was told
49 to throw out everything he summoned upon two episodes of doctor who the daleks episode 5 and the daleks master plan episode 2. he was a film enthusiast and decided to hold on to them to share with his friends throughout the 70s and 80s he kept them in his cupboard at home and in the 90s he kept them at work hung on a coat hook in 2003 he transferred them to digital beta cam a format similar to vhs as part of a training exercise when these copies were sent to him in january 2004 he first discovered by the doctor who restoration site that this episode was missing from the archive and he owned the only known copy he quickly contacted steve roberts at the bbc
35 and within three days they had arrived to the bbc and was announced on the official website by 2pm ralph montague was having coffee with some of his employees when the topic of collecting films and doctor who came up terry burnett a friend of one of his workers was an avid film collector and mentioned that he did have an episode of doctor who he offered to lend the episode to montague next time they met as fate would have it burnett left his jacket behind and ralph offered to return it to him when they met up burnett brought along his doctor who episode when he inspected the spool it had the label doctor who airlock
22 they loaded the print onto montague's 16 millimeter film projector and quickly discovered that it was indeed the missing episode 3 of galaxy 4. burnett explained that it had been sitting in his collection for over 30 years when he bought a box of films from a school fate in the mid-80s he was more than happy to return the episode to the bbc the next morning they organized the delivery to steve roberts at the bbc and was announced to the public in december 2011 alongside another episode [Music] when ralph montague came to organize the return of galaxy 4 episode 3 terry burnett remembered he had
07 yet another doctor who episode in his possession which apparently slipped his mind funnily enough he got it at the same school fate back in the mid 80s once they loaded it into the projector they discovered it was yet another missing episode episode 2 of the underwater menace this alongside episode 3 of galaxy 4 was announced to the missing believes wiped event in december 2011 at the bfi 42 missing episodes have been found in africa this is the beginning of the omni rumor you may be getting a whole host of missing doctor whoever there are rumors that a stash of 90 missing episodes have been 100 lost episodes the crusade the enemy
54 of the world there will always be 106 missing episodes so what actually happened phillip morris the director of television international enterprises archive limited assists with storage and migration of film material with overseas stations and also helps recover lost british television in late 2011 they were in jos nigeria when he discovered a bunch of film cans marked doctor who he quickly discovered these were full sets of the enemy of the world and almost all of the weather fear
40 well that is what was reported at the time philip morris in 2015 announced that he had found all six episodes of the web of fear but episode 3 ironically went missing philip took a picture of all 12 film cans in 2011. one of the people working at the station took episode 3 to their office and it was never seen again phillip went to the top of the company and they simply denied the incident ever happening even with photographic evidence of the film cans investigation into this missing episode is still being conducted today and is suspected of being in the hands of a doctor who fan the moral of the omni rumor really is to take rumors with a pinch of salt
25 have fun with it but try your best not to spread misinformation two stories now sit almost complete in the archive and that should be celebrated not a disappointment that everything isn't back as of the recording of this video a total of 97 episodes of 60s doctor who is missing from the archive so many dedicated and hard-working individuals throughout the decades have spent years trying to find the missing pieces of doctor who's history so we can go to our dvd shelves and watch a story that was almost lost forever we shouldn't be upset that 97 episodes are still missing we should be thankful to those who fought to find the 109 episodes that now remain safe in the bbc's archive and more
12 importantly at our collections at home [Music] so that's the hartnell and trout and eras sorted but how did john pertwee's episodes go from this to this why are some pearly episodes in high quality and others in potato quality stay tuned for the next episode to find out how don't forget to click below to subscribe to the official joshnez youtube channel
