00 It is 2 o'clock in the night in Delhi, it is extremely cold, the whole city is asleep but Tushar is awake at this time and he is watching a video on his laptop on youtube1 through drop shipping, some influencer is telling him how in the last 9 years some influencer and many of his acquaintances have become millionaires through drop shipping and he is really invested in that, the surprising thing is that a week before last one week, he was watching tutorials on crypto currency and he was watching some other influencer on youtube0 is the right thing to invest in and a week before that he was watching a 21 year old girl on
45 instagram2 had earned just by writing content and he was deeply considering a career in content writing, if you go and see Tushar's link profile, you will find many certificates in different domains, you will find a certificate of digital marketing, on his profile you will find a certificate of basics of stock market and you will also Find a certificate in python3, it is lying somewhere Friends, if you find Tushar's story relatable then there is a reason behind it and that reason is that somewhere we develop different interests and listen to different people and we run after every single opportunity, every single skill and every single new idea and that syndrome is called Shiny Object Syndrome. This Shiny
30 Object Syndrome is seen in millennials and gen's and I have been suffering from that for a long time. This Shiny Object Syndrome is just like an Indian wedding buffet. Here you will find a lot of things, you will find paneer tikka, chicken tikka, Manchurian, dry Manchurian, fries, there are lots of salads, lots of food to eat but in the process of trying different foods, I can eat this as well, I can eat aal tikki as well, I can eat golgappas as well, I can eat pav bhaji as well, what happens in this process is that we stop and taste one thing We do n't try it with satisfaction and shiny object syndrome is also like this, we keep chasing different skills, different ideas, different business opportunities but at the end we have just wasted a lot of time and we have a lot of surface level knowledge of different topics.
17 Friends, I have wasted a lot of time due to this shiny object syndrome and I don't want you guys to waste your time in it. We will definitely talk about how to deal with this syndrome but first of all let's talk about what are its actual reasons because if we don't know the reasons, then we cannot apply our solutions effectively. Reason number one is the illusion of progress. When we start any new thing, there is an excitement associated with it, there is a novelty associated with it and whenever we try different things randomly, then we feel that we are Progressing towards something We are achieving something but that is an illusion The second reason is lack of clarity Different people come and tell us, some uncle tells us, some our parents tell us, some influencer tells us what we should do but in
04 reality we ourselves do not have any such clarity as to what we have to do with our career What do I really want out of my career Where do I want to go There is a lack of clarity among the youth in 2025 and I believe this is going to only increase in the coming years We feel that if we change all these things then some thing or the other will stick But that is a poor approach The third reason is Indian society, our upbringing or you can also call it peer pressure, our parents come and tell us that yaar for that you should start preparing for Google2 job but I am
51 discarding the fact that you can get a government job What is the probability of this and then there is social media especially a person is successful everyone has the best startup idea everyone has got a great job in you know great or in demand or someone is going to Ivy League someone is going to IIT or IIM and we feel that I am the only one who is not doing anything with my life or I am the only one who is not doing anything with my career and that is because everybody is only sharing their highlight reel all those people who you find sharing their success on social media they are only sharing the highlights of their life the fifth reason is the democratization of knowledge in today's time knowledge is very easily available to us in fact there is overload of information
36 we have from youtube2 we can do different types of courses at very cheap rate and basically so much knowledge has come to us through internet that we feel that when we get all these skills We will acquire it and then we will be able to do something and the final reason is the sixth reason and this is the deep one, this is the fear of missing out or FOMO, in today's time, changes are happening very fast, especially with the advent of artificial intelligence, like many technologies or our working ability is going to change rapidly, so somewhere in our mind, it remains that am I missing out on such a skill or am I missing out on such an opportunity or such a business idea which is going to change my life, but friends, what happens because of these reasons is that we become like a pinball, like there used to be a game of pinball, it means it must be happening even now that a pinball keeps
24 hitting different walls in different places and in different directions and it really goes nowhere for a while in the same way as what we do, we keep chasing different opportunities but we never really put in enough time And the effort to really see a compounded effort does not get compounded so that we can see any actual outcome in our career. 3 years ago your college friend was gaining expertise in machine learning and after 3 years she has become the leader of her team and is doing many interesting projects of artificial intelligence. Similarly, if you have a batchmate who was employed as a junior developer and because he stuck to it, he stuck to it and gained expertise. Now he has been promoted to a senior developer and he is earning in lakhs. Now what a lot of people will do is they will take this advice of commitment out of context that it is a good competitive
12 exam or it is a UPSC exam, so I will give my five to six years in it, whether I get selected or not, I will keep preparing for the UPSC exam for 6 years because commitment was talked about but that is basically stupidity. We should also know that there is a fine line between it. Persis and Commitment We must know which is that moment, which is that time when we actually have to give up or quit because doing something repetitively like blind people or with our eyes blindfolded and even when we know that the probability of that thing happening is very negligible, then also working on that thing with a blindfold on for years, that is basically stupidity. Anyway, this is a completely different topic and if you want a video on this, a separate video, then let me know in the comments below and I will make a video on How to Quit and
59 When to Quit. In self-improvement, we definitely say that you know you should not compare your life, focus on your path, your track only because comparison is not valid and that is true, but it is human nature that he definitely compares his life with somebody else's life. Many times we look at ourselves, we see that if I am 30 now and my colleague or my batchmate who was with me, who was at the same level as me, on the same scale or in a similar college, where are they today, are they earning 2x, 5x and 10x than what I am earning, then maybe they have taken a different type of decision and maybe they are in the same position and maybe I have grown and sometimes that comparison under certain limits is valid and whenever you
44 will do that comparison with your friends, with your batchmates, with your colleagues and you will find that if this person or this person who was associated with his domain, with his field for the last six years and today he has become a senior leader by compounding, has come to the managerial level and you are still fidelity, please understand that feeling and I want you to know that if you can get out of this trap of this shiny object syndrome, then there is a way to get out of this trap. What are the ways to come out of this syndrome? There is a three step framework which we talk about. The number one step is to define your not star. This not star is your direction that I have to go broadly in this direction. This
30 not star will not be defined by your parents. This not star will not be defined by your peers, your colleagues, your batchmates, your friends, your siblings, all these people will not define this not star. This not star is personal. You have to define it yourself. And this not star is not like that. I am going to become an IAS officer. IAS officer or an engineer or a position is not a not star. That is not a direction because what will happen is that if you are not able to become an IAS officer or a software engineer, you are not able to reach that position. You will consider yourself a failure. So it is much better to define a direction than a fixed degree or a fixed position. What will happen with a not star is that broadly you will have a direction defined and if you have a very tense and shiny object, you will have to define it. If you see it, then it will be in your mind that my north star is in this direction
17 and I have to go in this direction, I can diverge a little and acquire things definitely but this is completely in the opposite direction and I will not go there, you will see some examples of north star on your screen, take a screenshot of it and save it. The second step is the 90 day rule, what happens is that in shiny object, if we get any new idea, then we try that for a month or we try that for a week at most and then we switch somewhere else, but when we switch multiple times or keep transitioning from one place to another and I am not talking about jobs here, I am talking about skills or ideas or exploring things, so when ever we are doing that pinball action, then what happens is that no thing gets compounded, we do not get deeper knowledge of anything So we have to make a commitment with ourselves. We
03 have to make a commitment with our cells that whether it is a skill or a project or it is the study of something, I will do it for 90 days and after that I will look at something else and in between there may be a period of nine months in this 90 day period, so in that different thoughts will come in your mind that I should keep writing those thoughts and once you have completed those 90 days, it can be a skill or it can be a course, maybe you are learning a Python language, so after studying Python language dedicatedly for three months after nine months, now you can switch to such things which you would have written in your journal, in your diary, now that will allow you because the period of 90 days is
50 a big enough period but it is not so long that your whole life will be spent in it, so the 90 day period is a good enough time where you can gain in-depth knowledge of anything. You can gain knowledge and the third step is the mentor check. What happens many times is that we just keep taking knowledge from the internet and we think that because today on the internet, everyone has a mic, I also have a mic, everyone has a mic, that means everyone can create content easily and you will find success studies or successful case studies in every domain, for example, you will find successful case studies in freelancing, in dropshipping, in crypto currency, in software engineering, even in artist, if you look at carpentry or tailor, you will also find tailors who are earning crores of rupees, so
35 successful case studies exist in every domain, but that means you are going to pass every single domain, we do not have so much time that we can gain mastery in all these domains, so we are just getting influence by all the influencers or content creators or people on the We actually have to go to the internet and talk to someone who is just two or three steps ahead of you. If you are a junior developer and you want to move ahead in software engineering, then may be it is a good idea to talk to a senior developer through
29 and be thankful for their time. Whenever we do this mentor check, we get a reality check because many times what happens is that on the internet you see very fruitful or very shiny things. You may not see any bad example of anything. So when ever you actually interact with people who are in the domain right now, you see a mirror of your future self that maybe I am going to become or do something like this in the future. Friends, getting success in any field is just like cooking biryani. To cook biryani, it requires time, energy, resources and attention. Patience has to be kept. You cannot lift the lid and put some new spices in it again and again and close the lid later. Then you expect
14 because if we are adding new spices again and again every 5 minutes then the taste of biryani will become very good but the taste of biryani will get spoiled due to opening the lid again and again in 5 minutes and adding new spices, it will be disgusting to eat, so actually if you want the taste of that biryani then we have to let that biryani cook with patience and satisfaction, we have to let it cook, I have learnt this lesson with great difficulty in the last several years and today I wanted to share this lesson with you and friends in this journey of building a career sometimes we feel stuck, sometimes we don't feel like doing it, sometimes we do n't have motivation and this intrinsic motivation will never come in front of you until these three factors are not in front of you, if even one of these three factors is not in front of you or
01 you do not have it, then you will not feel motivated for a long time to pursue what you want to do So I talked about these three factors in a separate video and how you can come out of this stuck situation. I will link that video somewhere here. Definitely go and check it and I will meet you next time.
