Intro

The video introduces the concept of meta-learning, which is described as an efficient way to learn that separates successful people from average people. The content aims to provide valuable insights for individuals in various stages of life, including students, self-employed individuals, and corporate employees, emphasizing that learning is a continuous process. The video promises to share tips and tricks to train the mind and speed up the learning process.

How does your brain behave when you learn new things

When learning a new skill, the brain's neurons connect, and repeated practice strengthens these connections through a process called neuroplasticity. This is similar to how muscles grow with exercise. Dopamine, responsible for the brain's reward system, is released when progress is made, which sustains motivation. However, slow progress can decrease dopamine release, leading to demotivation and the tendency to give up.

Stages of Learning you need to know

Learning any new skill involves four stages: discomfort, improvement, plateau, and success. The initial discomfort arises from learning the basics, requiring a push to move forward. The improvement stage brings enjoyment and high confidence as progress is made, fueled by dopamine release. The plateau stage involves refining skills and correcting mistakes, which can be frustrating and reduce dopamine levels. Overcoming the plateau requires remembering the initial motivation and intention. The final stage is success, but achieving mastery requires repeating the cycle.

But how to not Give Up on learning a skill?

Many people give up after hitting the plateau stage due to decreased dopamine release. While it's easier to abandon skills that don't seem interesting, education and career-related skills require persistence. To speed up the learning process and avoid giving up, it's important to employ specific tactics.

1/Effectively ese the 80-20 rule

The 80-20 rule suggests focusing on the 20% of efforts that yield 80% of the results. For example, when learning a new language, focus on the 1,000 most common words used in daily conversations rather than 10,000 random words. This approach emphasizes smart work over hard work, identifying shortcuts to achieve more with less effort. Applying this rule effectively involves understanding where to direct the 20% effort to maximize results and avoid unnecessary struggles and wasted time.

Journal prompts to know your WHY

To effectively apply the 80-20 rule, it's crucial to have a clear intention or "why" for learning a skill. This involves understanding the reasons behind learning the skill, whether it's for personal growth or to achieve a specific goal. Strong intentions are internal, such as learning coding to secure a good job and provide for family, with money being a byproduct.

2/Short term vs long term memory

The brain has short-term and long-term memory. Short-term memory is temporary, with less important information being deleted nightly. Long-term memory stores information that is consciously practiced and repeated, signaling its importance for survival. Teaching others is an effective way to reinforce learning and move information from short-term to long-term memory. By explaining concepts to others, one can identify gaps in their own understanding and improve their learning process.

3/Taking feedbacks is important

Seeking feedback is crucial for accelerating skill acquisition. Real-time feedback helps identify mistakes and track progress, enabling faster improvement. A mentor or guide can significantly reduce the time and energy required for self-improvement. Selecting a teacher who aligns with one's intentions and actively asking questions are essential for receiving valuable feedback.

4/Shift your identity to be a better learner

Shifting one's identity is essential for becoming a better learner. Instead of thinking, "I can't learn new skills," adopt the mindset of someone who believes they can learn anything they set their mind to. This involves creating a mental image of oneself as capable and determined. The brain works on the basis of evidence, so celebrating small wins and acknowledging achievements helps reinforce a positive identity.

5/Have courage to feel worse to become strong

Embracing discomfort is a sign of growth. Feeling like a worse person during the plateau stage is a necessary part of the learning cycle. Pushing through uncomfortable situations and pressures leads to future success. This principle applies not only to learning new skills but also to life in general.

Summary of the video

The video concludes by summarizing the five tips for accelerated learning: applying the 80-20 rule, teaching others, seeking feedback, shifting one's identity, and embracing discomfort. The key is to intentionally change oneself internally, ensuring that the "why" is clear and working on oneself to make the learning process a one-time, effective endeavor.

0:00 I think one such skill that separates successful people from average people It is their ability to learn things quickly Whether they want to learn a new skill or understand a concept or adapt themselves with change They have specific ways through which they can speed up their learning process They are not just memorizing but rather use an efficient way to learn which is called meta-learning In fact, there are some tips and tricks that I applied in my skill of the month series So that I can train my mind in order to learn a new skill in a short span of time And no matter what stage you are in, whether you are a student, self-employed Or you are working in a corporate This video is going to be super valuable for you because learning never stops Life always teaches you something So get a pen and paper because in this video we are going to learn that "How to Learn"

0:46 So hi guys, if you are new here, my name is Drishti Sharma And I make content around habit, mindset and self-growth If these topics interest you, feel free to subscribe to this channel And I would love to share my journey with you as we grow together First, let's understand what is the neuroscience behind learning anything new How does our brain actually react when it is given to learn something new? So our brain is like a muscle and when you learn a new skill, Then the neurons of your brain, which are the cells of the brain, connect to each other And when you keep practicing that skill and keep repeating it Then these connections become stronger And this process is called neuroplasticity The same way your muscles grow when you exercise Like that only when you learn a new skill, you train your brain So that it can develop a good muscle memory And the more you keep practicing that skill, the stronger your neural connections become

1:34 And the stronger your neural connections become The easier it will be for you to learn a new skill or remember it for a long time The second thing is dopamine Which is responsible for the reward system and motivation in our brain So when you learn a new skill and show a little progress in it Then there is a dopamine release in your brain which makes you feel That you have achieved something in life And this is how you stay motivated to complete that skill till the end But if you are getting results gradually or you feel that your learning progress is very slow Then the release of dopamine also slows down and you feel demotivated And you tend to give up on that skill And this is a natural process of learning No matter what skill you learn, it goes through 4 stages The first stage is discomfort When you learn a new skill, everything is new for you

2:19 So you feel a little uncomfortable because you have to learn the basics You have to feed the new information in your brain, which initially seems a little difficult So in this stage, you have to force push yourself so that you can go to the next stage Which is of improvement Now when you have learned the basics and you are showing a little progress Then you are enjoying it because you feel that you have learned the skill little bit And you are now understanding it Your confidence is very high, dopamine is being released at a very high level And this motivates you to fun push yourself in order to reach the next stage Which is called plateau Now plateau is the stage where you have cleared the basics But you have to go to the intermediate or advanced level Which means you need to refine your skill now You need to correct small mistakes Because it becomes very frustrating So you start to feel that you actually know about this skill

3:06 But still, you're not seeing any improvement And then the release of dopamine also decreases In this stage, you have to remember your intention or motivation That what was your why before starting this skill? And when you know that and you refine your skills Then you go to the last stage which is called success After that, if you want to achieve mastery in this skill Then you have to repeat this cycle again because learning never stop Now the problem here is that after hitting the plateau We give up learning that skill because our dopamine release has decreased And you see there are so many skills which I have started doing but I have left it in the middle Because I didn't find it that interesting But you can't do that with education There it becomes a necessity Or you need to learn a skill that can help you level up in your career and earn more money So in these things, it's a necessity, brother You can't leave it halfway

3:55 So there you will use some tactics because of which your learning process can speed up So here are my 5 ways to do so Number 1 is the 80-20 rule This means that you should focus your time and energy on those things Which will give you more results Which means 20% of your efforts should fetch you 80% of your results Now how do you know where to put that 20% exactly? I will tell you through an example Let's suppose you want to learn a new language So you sit and learn what a cat is called, what a dog is called, and how grammar works Or instead of learning 10,000 random words, you learn 1,000 words That people use in daily conversations Let me tell you, I went on a solo trip to Thailand, and I knew that 2-3 sentences like when I am bargaining Such as 'Can I get a discount on this?' or 'How much does this cost?

4:41 Hello, thank you, I learned all these small things And the Thai people were impressed that as a traveller she knows a lot of worrds in Thai So basically this is how you use this rule You just have to think about where to put your 20% effort so you can get 80% of your results It's basically choosing smart work over hard work. Mostly we feel that we should work hard Hustle hard, sweat hard and only then we will get the results But this is not the case In most cases, you have shortcuts Where you can fetch more results with less effort And the 80-20 rule can be applied to almost every aspect of life I will try to explain this with my own examples When I wanted to learn drums as a part of my Skill of the Month series At that time I understood only basic beats and rhythm

5:27 I improved my hi-hats and kicks and learned to read drum notations Basically, a lead sheet is given to any musician, and based on it, they read and play any music So I learned how to write it and how to read it Basically, drum tap was my shortcut And if I have a drum sheet of any song today, I can play that song very easily So here I put only 20% effort into understanding the lead sheets And coordinating with my hand and leg movements Basically, this is how I use the 80-20 rule in this skill This rule is so effective that if you know how to apply it Then you will be able to save yourself from unnecessary struggles You will be able to save yourself from wasting time And you can put your efforts and energy Into a place that will help you achieve your ultimate goal faster

6:16 But for that, your intention or your why should be clear Meaning, you should know why you are learning that skill What is the reason behind learning that skill Can it help me grow personally? Or can it help me achieve something? If your intention is clear, then it makes your journey very focused and meaningful And don't have unnecessary intentions like I am learning coding because I want to earn money Or I am learning guitar because I want to impress my Crush Intention is strong only when it is internal Which means you can think like you're learning coding so that you can get a good job And because of that, you can give your mom and dad a good life And money would be a by-product of that Or you can learn guitar so that you have a good hobby

7:03 Which helps your social skills develop well And impressing your Crush would be a by-product of it I know this can be a bit tricky so here are some journal prompts in order For you to reflect on your intentions Then the second tip is to teach others What happens in our mind is that there is a short term memory and a long term memory So when you have short-term memory, every night while you're sleeping Whatever your brain thinks is less important is basically deleted from your memory It is put in your short term memory So that you don't remember that thing till tomorrow But the things that you consciously practice over and over again you keep feeding into your brain Then the brain thinks that this skill, this activity, this habit is being used daily Which means it will be important for the survival of this person

7:48 So brain feed it in your long term memory Which means it is fed in your subconscious mind So that is why when we brush or say ABCD We have practiced all these things so many times that it is fed in our long term memory So whatever happens tomorrow, you will always remember these things So it is our responsibility that we with practice or with repetition Store any information in our long term memory And I know this can be a bit irritating so teaching others is one of the best ways To know where do you stand in terms of learning that skill and what mistakes you have to clear Because when you teach something to someone else, Then you are basically repeating that information in your mind again And you also get to know that this information That I think I understood

8:34 But when I am trying to explain it to someone else, I am fumbling myself in explaining that thing or I am not able to explain it properly Which means maybe that concept is not clear to me So you will understand where you are lacking, what you need to improve And how you have to go about in your learning process The third is to get feedbacks Now imagine that there are two people who are learning how to meditate The first person who is reading articles from everywhere, Learning by himself, watching videos and then sitting down to meditate And the second person who has not read any articles but has a headband To measure that when he meditates how his brain waves move up and down When he is losing the focus When he's meditating with high intensity, focusing very strongly So which person will pick the skill the fastest and excel in it? Person B, because he has a proper loop for feedback

9:22 He's able to realize in real-time at what points he is making mistakes and can track them The most important thing is to get feedback about your work I also feel that my self-improvement journey would have been faster It took me 4-5 years because I have searched everything by myself Everything was self-studied and written, and after that, I improved everything on my own But if I had a mentor or a guide Then I would have been able to cover my 4-year journey in 6-7 months So getting feedback is so important because it will cut down your time and energy But for feedback you need to select the best teacher for you I think when your intention is clear that I am going with this intention Then your teacher should also know that intention And then you should find the teacher Who aligns with your intention

10:08 And teaches you in such a way that you can receive feedback on it And you have to keep asking questions This feedback loop is such that until you ask, the other person won't tell you anything So you will have to put efforts and ask whether this is going right or not And you have to literally nag that person out You have to stay curious that how this happens and how that happens You will sound very dumb but you have to make yourself feel that way In order to improve yourself The fourth tip is to shift your identity If you are someone who thinks about yourself like this, 'I just can't learn any new skill's Who will work so hard who will put himself in such an uncomfortable situation I will never be able to do this I will always leave a skill in between I am such a person You will always remain such a person for your entire life If you are saying bad things about yourself you can't expect good things to happen to you in life

10:57 So you have to always keep in mind that you need to shift your identity first I will give you an example let's suppose there are two people who are trying to quit smoking So whenever someone offers a cigarette so person A says that No No I don't want it because I am trying to quit smoking Then there is a person B who says that No No I don't want it because I am a non smoker Who will be able to quit smoking soon? Person B of course because he identifies himself as a non smoker Who will never want to smoke So basically you shift your identity And same thing happens with me that whenever I learn a new skill So I always create an image of myself in my mind That I am the kind of person who can learn any skill if I want to, and I can make it possible I mean my willpower is so strong that if I want to learn something then I will complete it

11:45 I have basically created an image of myself in my mind that I have strong willpower And that thing then reflects in reality And yes, I believe that it's not so easy that you can just say today you want to shift your identity So it's not like from today your brain will start obeying your commands Your brain basically works on the basis of evidence Whenever there is a difficult situation in front of you A book opens up and first takes out all the negative things from it That in the past, we handled the same thing, but we couldn't do it; we failed So in this situation too we will fail We are losers we are this we are that all negative things come Because in the past you've had experiences where you've identified yourself as a loser So your brain keeps showing you the same negative things

12:31 Because your brain works on the basis of evidence So when you do such a next thing in which you start celebrating your small wins Okay, even though we didn't achieve something big, we did achieve this small thing When you acknowledge this, your brain basically records it in its diary I will make a video on this, If it is already made then I will link it here If it hasn't been made yet, you will soon see that video on my channel The last one is to have courage to feel worse There was this line that I read long back which goes like Sometimes you have to feel dumb in order to feel smart And this is so true I mean when you hit a plateau you feel demotivated And when that stage comes Then we want to leave everything behind and go back to our old life It's like, okay, why put yourself in such an uncomfortable situation?

13:17 Why go there, why go through that place? Why are we doing this thing, like we start questioning everything Like feeling like a worse person is a sign of growth If you are not feeling that way then your learning cycle will not be complete You will always come in the first 2-3 stages and then start from zero Which is not a good sign so basically you have to make yourself feel worse In order to level up in your life and this was one of the most important lessons that I have learnt And this doesn't just matter for learning a new skill This matters throughout your life So you have to put yourself under uncomfortable situation You have to put that pressure on yourself So that your future life is very happening and there is no other way And this is actually the sign of growth And yeah, these were my 5 tips on how you can learn anything fast

14:04 I know these weren't such traditional tips; there were quite a few unique points among them But this is exactly what I wanted—that if you intentionally try to change yourself So you won't need to watch other videos related to this topic again and again If your 'why' is clear and you start working on yourself internally So this will become a one-time thing And you won't need to keep watching self-improvement videos repeatedly And because this video was heavy so I have a summary of this video on your screen You can take a screenshot of it Let me know in the comments which tip you liked the most Or what tips do you have that you wanted to share with me Because I reply to every single comment So yeah please do leave a comment and I will see you guys on next Sunday Stay tuned see you soon Bye!
