Gospel Reading: Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

The passage recounts a story where Pharisees and teachers of the law gathered from various regions to hear Jesus teach. A group of men brought a paralyzed man on a bed, seeking to bring him before Jesus for healing. Unable to enter through the crowd, they climbed onto the roof and lowered the man through the tiles. Impressed by their faith, Jesus declared the man's sins forgiven, which sparked controversy among the scribes and Pharisees, who questioned Jesus' authority to forgive sins, a power they believed belonged to God alone. Jesus, aware of their thoughts, challenged them by asking whether it was easier to say, "Your sins are forgiven," or "Rise and walk." To demonstrate His authority, Jesus commanded the paralyzed man to rise, take up his bed, and go home. The man immediately obeyed, glorifying God, and the witnesses were filled with amazement and awe.

Explanation of the Antimension and Liturgical Items

The video explains the significance of the antimension, a cloth with a relic sewn into it, used during the liturgy. The antimension is always open when dealing with the Eucharist, even when the priest goes to the tabernacle to retrieve the holy oil, prism, and reserved sacrament. The priest also wears a petra healy when distributing communion. The antimension depicts the burial of Christ, with writings around the sides and the four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in the corners. Additionally, the video shows a sponge used to collect crumbs and particles during the preparation of the Eucharist, highlighting its frequent use.

The Sermon's Role and Importance of Knowledge

The entire liturgy, including the icons, iconostasis, and order of service, serves as a sermon. Following the epistle and gospel readings, the priest typically delivers a sermon that highlights the readings and provides good news to the faithful. The sermon should explain the interpretation of the day's readings, draw upon relevant world events, and instruct the faithful on what is useful and necessary for salvation. It should provide courage, strength, and hope in faith and sound reason, and should not be used as a lecture. The priest emphasizes the importance of understanding the theology and events within the liturgy, as the prophet Isaiah said, "My people die every day because of the lack of knowledge."

Applying Faith in Daily Life and the Importance of Continuous Learning

The priest notes that many people struggle in their marriages and personal lives due to a lack of understanding and guidance from the church. He stresses the importance of teaching about marriage, the Eucharist, and confession, emphasizing that confession is more than just recounting sins; it's about guidance and preventing future transgressions. Everything should point towards the Lord, His grace, mercy, and righteousness. The priest encourages the congregation to understand the liturgy so they can carry it with them and share it with their families and those who are struggling. The mercy and grace given to others will be returned by God. He hopes that everyone will continue to learn and gain wisdom, allowing them to be moved by the liturgy, which is a "little piece of heaven."

0:02 at that time as jesus was teaching there were pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by who had come from every village of galilee in judea and from jerusalem and the power of the lord was with him to heal and behold men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed and they sought to bring him in and lay him before jesus but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd they went up on the roof and let her down with his bed through the tiles in the midst of jeep before jesus and when jesus saw their faith he said man your sins are forgiven you and the scribes and the pharisees began to question saying who is this that speak speaks blasphemies who can forgive sins but god alone when jesus perceived their

0:48 thoughts he answered them why do you reason in your hearts which is easier to say your sins have forgiven you or to say rise and walk but that you may know that the son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins he said to the man who is paralyzed i say to you rise take up your bed and go home and immediately he rose before them and check up on that took up that on which he laid and he went home glorifying god and amazement sees them all and they glorify god who were filled with love saying we have seen strange things today [Music]

1:37 will come [Music] so now typically the timing is a little bit different in the book i typically unfold the entaminsion while that's being done the gospel is set up because the size of the altar sometimes the priest put it lay it down but because the size of the altar i stand the gospel straight up i unfold the endometrium the antimation has a relic in the back

2:22 that is sewed in every entity and you guys can come up and look at it it is the exact same thing that we use during holy week if you guys want to come and look but you can see it's specifically for saint nicholas lakeland florida metropolitan gregory signs it and dates it so he signed this in 2015. okay so that's what the antamisum is and whenever i am dealing with the eucharist the antimiations open even if i go into the little tabernacle back there on the altar the gold uh the gold thing back there which is a tabernacle which holds the holy oil the prism and the reserved sacrament that i that we uh that i reserve on holy thursday i would open the antamision up

3:09 to take out the eucharist and i would also put on my pet healing in order to do that so whenever i distribute the communion i always usually have by petra healy with me okay and then as you can see it's the the burial of christ you can see the writings around the side right that all the joseph took down your most pure body down from the cross and with the fragrance and with the fragrant spices later in the burial for your tomb okay so we're preparing for the resurrection right and then in the corners you have the four uh writers of the gospels the evangelists matthew mark luke and john okay and then this this is just the this fun this is a just a sponge so whenever i

3:55 have the disco and i'll remember if you remember when i prepared the um the communion when i prepared the eucharist i this is what i use to make sure that the i get all the crumbs and all the particles and it's got a different kind of uh texture on it you know so that way it's it's like a really dense uh texture and you i just use that and you can see how many times it's been used the gold is actually starting to you know come off and everything okay so that way you guys get to see kind of the whole what's going on in the in the back there all right so now typically go ahead and read

4:41 the sermon part of it i it should be noted the entire liturgy preaches the gospel the icons the iconastas the order of the service and everything which is done in the liturgy provide a vital sermon in which by grace the faith will participate in the gospel additionally following the epistle readings and gospel readings the priest typically preaches his sermon which will highlight the readings and give the faithful the good news the sermon ought to explain the interpretation of the day's readings and draw upon relevant information of the events happening in the world to instruct the faithful considering what is useful and necessary to salvation and what is edifying to the soul the sermon

5:28 is to feed the flock that belongs to the lord and give courage strength and hope in faith and sound reason and should never be used as a time of lecture the priest should give a clear and direct word of enlightenment and edification on the gospel of god's kingdom so quickly i'm not going to give a full sermon but the reason why i'm doing this teaching liturgy okay is because the prophet isaiah says my people die every day because of the lack of knowledge okay i want for me it's important for everybody to understand the theology what's going on of course there's a lot more going on because you haven't read all those scripture readings we're still moving along with radical with liturgy

6:13 but it's important for us to have knowledge the thing that i've noticed the last few years is i see people going through these struggles and their marriages i see people going through struggles in their personal life i see all these things because we don't understand and for some reason the priest has dropped the ball right and i put all that on the priests we need to be teaching what marriage is all about we need to be teaching what the eucharist is all about we need to be teaching what confession is all about a lot of times people can think that confession is you just telling me the sins right but it's more than that right whenever anybody that's come to confession with me you know that i help and guide you to try to not do those

6:59 things again it's just not okay your sins are forgiven it's a guidance right everything should be pointing to the lord everything should be pointed toward the lord and the kingdom of heaven everything should be pointed towards his grace his mercy his righteousness right and a lot of times we have get men become disenchanted by different people doing different and i said that's where they are in their life but different people give sermons that talk about money talk about politics talk about those things right even though that stuff is important but that's not the time to be used during the sermon right that's not where you should be and as i said and again as the reading said it's not a time to lecture

7:46 either right the sermon is not the time to use it to teach about the life of saint john chrysostom that's important but that's not the time for it that's for a class it's like during the sermon it's not the time for a bible study either bible studies for us is tuesday nights that's when we spend it okay so it's very important for us as orthodox christians to understand this and then we take it home and we start teaching our children right jesus told us right or and if you read in the old testament too right the word of god should be hung around your neck day and night we should be studying day and night we should be reading day and

8:31 night we should be enveloped into the word of god right into the life of the church when we come to church it should not be a one once done and then you go out and live your life the church should be surrounding you at all times okay and that's why i want everybody to understand what's going on in the liturgy so that way you can carry it with you right you take what you learn here the things that move you and you take it home to your family members right the people that may not be coming to church the people that are struggling and it's important for us to be like christ today and to understand that the mercy that we give other people

9:16 is the mercy that we will receive in turn by god the grace that we give other people is the grace that we give other is what we return by god okay so i hope that everybody will continue to learn and to gain the wisdom that they need so that way you can continue to just become just moved by the liturgy because this is our time our little piece of heaven okay you can continue with the litany of verbs
