32 points in profit. >> That is how it's done. Paul was over there on the VIP as well. Um getting ready to go through the night. Jyn saying is the choice of stimulant. Let's put it that way. Richard Malportinglife.com also in the good on best bets. How you doing, Richard? Winners last week. >> Yeah, a couple. I've not got a grin quite as big as Paul's, but I'm just lurching above three points profit now. Got some nice antipost positions. It was actually a lesson really for for all sort of betters really. I've had a shocking sort of end of summer and autumn seem to be hitting the crossbar a lot and you know, you've just got to keep going and doing the things that you know pay off in the long term and eventually it has turned thankfully and I've managed to get back in profit.
19 It's easy to get disheartened in this game. It really is a mental challenge and it's just nice to have uh found my touch again, I must admit. >> Yeah, you got to keep going. There's another um month yet left yet of 2025. Still plenty of time to turn things around and absolutely loads of cricket, but we are focusing on that ultimate guide to the second Ash's test. As I said, the best bets for this second test will come at the end of the show. It's a dayight test from the Gaba Brisbane Thursday start 0400 live on TNT. We've got the team news detailed pitch report. We're really having a big deep dive on the inplay strategies for this one because we've got some angles. We think we'll talk trades, we'll talk
05 player win rates, first and second innings. But before we get to into the odds, are we a must-win situation now for England? Surely they can't afford to go 2-0 down. We discussed series odds in our previous show. Uh Paul must win for England in in the context of the series. >> Definitely. I mean, if they lose it, I reckon maybe 3% chance left and you wouldn't back it. >> All right, Richard. Um >> Oh, >> what do you reckon? >> Oh, yeah. Absolutely must win. Look, I'm I'm feeling a bit more upbeat than I was 11 or 12 days ago. So, only positive things from me today from an England point of view. All right, let's look at
52 the match then and work out um how this second test is going to go. We've got four to seven Australia AK bets 21 to 10 England triple A and AK bets and the draw at 16 will spread it. So, I'm pretty sure you can write off the draw and we'll talk about that in a bit. um seen no rain and we've got views on when this test match is going to end. We'll come to that. Let's talk teams. I'll give you Australia's possible 11. This is what I think they are going to do and we'll see if we can get some agreement with Richard. Um so Head and Weatherall opening the batting, letting Kawaja go. They solved a problem by sort of accident with Kawaja's back injury. heads found his form because of it. It's a golden opportunity to bolster
39 their lineup if they make that selection. So I think they'll take it. Lavishane Smith Green English coming into the middle order off the back of a time against the Lions. They could go with Webster but Webster of course an all rounder. I'm not sure they need that extra bowling stock. Perry Stark bowling line dog. Pat Cummings is of course ruled out of this one. Rich is that what Australia do? Um we always stress that it's not what um we would do but this is what we think Australia will do and what you might disagree. >> No. Um with the batting I I I agree with you in in in respect that this is what I would do. I think they need someone up top who can throw some punches back at England. But I I actually think they might stick with Kawaja which from a betting point of view might be great
25 because and I'll talk about it later. I'm keen to get at Kawaja and shot his runs. Um, I would go with the way you've gone with a bowling. I I would leave dog out though and I play Michael Nissa here. I know I big him up last week and he didn't play. But it's two test matches today have both been day nighters. He's a really good bowler in these types of conditions and we saw him first innings at Perth. Australia have got quite a long tail and England have got the tools to get at them. And if you get Nissa in there with five class first class hundreds, you do pack that bat in a little bit more. I would definitely be playing Nissa this week and I think they will actually. >> All right, great shout. Um, Nissa will come back to him. Uh, tremendous player, Rich and I know I think Paul's a big fan as well. Paul, you know, it's kind of
11 been forgotten really, but Cummins is still a big miss, isn't he? For this Australia team and forgotten that Boland was cannon fod in that first innings. Dog is a serviceable ball player. doesn't look like he's going to play according to Richard, but he England really shouldn't get in too many trouble with a guy like Dogit. So, just trying to sort of remember that and reinforce the point. It's still absolutely major boost that Cummings is not there and of course Hazlewood isn't there. Ed, you sound like you're on a positive boost here. You know, you're trying to like find a case here for England. Um, look, yeah, on paper you lose Pat Cummings, that's a negative, but they did okay. They did well enough. Uh,
58 Bowens and Dogget Stark was superb. More the point, England were rubbish. If England bat like that again, and remember this test is under light, so you know, that is going to be harder. Then I don't see any reason why the likes of Brendon Dog Scott Bowling can't take Fif, you know, as can the England bowlers to be honest with you. It's going to be a bowler friendly test. So, um, I don't know how much difference packs really makes in that scenario. I got to say I completely agree with Rich. They've got to pick Michael Nissa here. Nob brainer. Um I think and I too would like them to keep Kawaja but I don't suspect they will. >> All right. I mean I'd like them to keep Kawaja as well cuz he's on my j for an inplay cell. um Michael Nissa who are all absolutely raving about 33s but MGM
45 Virgin bet top Australia run square in the first innings short 16s a place um all right um let's get into a bit more detail about it um it's the who wins the match question now I think we're pretty sure how Paul is going to go um possible important trend is uh 64% bias to the side batting first in day night tests Eight of 131 batting first in Australia. I'll put my cards on the table. Paul's exposed me. I've written for betting bet fair today that England well look I'm not the second to win but I'm going to say that the value to win. Um no coming ball's going to do something. So it brings their bowlers to the four.
32 I know the way they play. It will win them a test probably, but it will also con continue to lose them a test. I think I think Australia just too skinny for me. Richard, who wins the match or is is the fairer question, who is the value for you to win the match? >> Muted again. Bad cough. Look, if it was five to six a pair, yeah, you'd obviously go with Australia, wouldn't you, after Perth, but it's not that I'm just look, just had a quick look now. 3.15 England. And for a long periods in Perth, they were the better side. There's no doubt about that. They had they had Australia dead and buried at times and and just didn't quite bury them. Um the the other factor as well is
18 we talked before the first test about what a poor preparation England had had in terms of the batting. played at Lily Kill a real slow pitch in Perth and then went to the Optus bouncy track got caught out. So in theory to steal a racing team they really should improve for the run shouldn't now and they should the batting in particular should get better as the series goes on and I think as I said on last week's show I think this sort of scenario gives them a real chance. It's quite funky. You might need to see a funky declaration somewhere which is right up Stokes Street. You could see them having license to attack maybe an hour before that twilight period and going bananas with the bat. I just think there are a few factors in England's favor this week. I actually think Mark would not play is not a big issue here actually with the pink ball. They can get someone else in. Maybe pot well in in the in the
06 lion went off and played for the Lions uh or tongue. I'm a big fan gives some options. Will Jax could come in as well. So I I'm positive about England and the price is is enough to lower me in. What I would say is half an hour of good player from Australia that 3.15 for England could become 4.3 4.5 and as we always say about Bosball bet contrary take the big prices it will pay Paul I'll come to you about who wins the match but does it there's another caveat to that question for you particularly talking about the trade strategy which we always talk about on the cricket betting podcast doesn't really matter if we employ your system and bazball ball is perfect for that system because it um
51 it basically factors in these wild swings we get with this England team. >> Absolutely. Yeah, it's totally worth doing. Um so if the um starting odds after the toss are as they are right now, that would involve backing Australia at 2.16 and England at 5.3. Now I agreed what Rich just said doesn't take anything to get to those odds. It means a good hour, a good hour, hour and a half at the start for one sort or the other. >> All right, let's do the pitch report. Um, let's caveat or asterisk some lee stats. Average first inning score in the last 10 at Brisbane is 327. Of course, they're not all day nights. West Indies 311 in a day night. Batting first 2024.
38 U, there are strong signs that um deterioration happens in Brisbane. So batting first very important two scores of 400 plus in the last five personnings day night in Australia. So you do have the potent potential to get big scores if you bat in daylight. It's the only way you can guarantee you bat in daylight is if you win the toss and bat first. Talking a bit more about deterioration in day night your batting averages per innings. First innings 34.5, second innings 23.3, 17.6 in the third, and then 15.9 in the fourth. Um, Rich, what are you expecting
23 from the surface? Pace some bounce, but probably not as much as Perth. >> Yeah, exactly that actually. And I think what we'll see now is things will just go down in terms of that as we go through the S series. the pitches will get lower, they'll get slightly slower, probably less swing as well. Um, not that's not to say it's going to be like England in terms of slower pitches, but generally they they've scaled the top of the mountain in terms of pace and bounce. This will be slightly easier. It's still bouncy, but not not to the same degree as Perth. The other thing to consider at Brisbane, you can get actually quite strong overheads here. Some cloud cover, some rain can come in, and that can really help the ball move sideways as well. Obviously, I can't tell you right now what the weather's going to be like come game day, a few days out yet, but Brisbane overheads can
10 definitely play a part, whereas somewhere like Perth, generally speaking, generally get clear clear blue skies, it's 30 plus degrees and that's not really a factor, but it could could be different here. And obviously with that ping ball as well, >> right, we've had a big data dive drive on our WhatsApp group this week to really drill down into when runs will be scored and when wickets will fall in dayight. We think we've got a a decent angle. Um, I got very excited on the group because u I spent hours going through the last five day night test matches in Australia plus the Sheffield Shield match this summer which was at the GABA bracketing when wickets fell by 10 overs and 20 overs looking at each individual
56 innings first innings second innings third innings so on uh and you in short the raw data didn't really show up anything that I was um excited about. So um a little bit of an anti-limax. However, I think if you really do drill down into it, you can see some patterns which are going to be useful. Um in terms of when wickets will fall in the first things, I think that's probably where our best angle is going to be. And there is a trend for runs between the 20th and 40th over. If we recognize that there was an outlier uh in 2024 when India got rolled in
43 Adelaide, those numbers skew the data somewhat. But there is a clear trend for um fewer wickets falling 20 overs to 40 overs. And that would certainly chime with what players have been saying about how the pink ball behaves and gets very very soft. Um, and of course we've still got sunlight at that time. So overs potentially there the 20th to the 40th over but it all changes when we get the twilight and we we expect that to be happening after the t interval. um largely dependent on over rates, but sort of that 45 over mark. This is when it does get sty tricky. Uh and the pink
29 ball isn't moving prodigiously. It's not seeming off the surface. It's just much trickier for the batters to pick up what the ball is doing in terms of the seam movement, whether it's scrambled, whether it's an inswinger, whe it's an outswinger because the the um the black seam on the pink ball. Stuart B spoken about that. So, and this beautifully chimes with the stats. So, in Australia, wicket falls every 45.1 balls during the third and final session of a day's play in comparison to 52.8 Eight balls across the first and second sessions. Loads of numbers. Paul, put it into a bet or a strategy because some there's something there, isn't
15 there? >> Well, it certainly is a situation where you have to time your unders bet better and it's clearly easier to score at the start is later on because of that. So, just putting this into the runs uh strategy. First of all, I'm going to just say I'm an unders backer anyway because um it's only 300 par in day games at Brisbane and look at these two sides and look at what happened in the first game. I think under 200's well in play for both sides. So, I'd keep extreme unders on board. But then when England in particular are batting, I would want to go unders every time their partnership hits 50, 100 or 150. So let's imagine this scenario, right?
01 Their run line starts at 275. I would go under under 200 with that anyway, but leaving that bet size. Let's just It's very possible they start well to get to 150 for two quite quickly. The run line goes up to 375. Pink ball comes on at 200 for three. This is when you go unders. they're all out for 250 and you'd probably get 10 to 120 to one on under 275 at that stage. >> That is the dream scenario. Uh I think particularly with England I and just worth reiterating Rich I think because of the way England play they've been heavily criticized for refusing to do any hard work and graft when the ball
47 starts doing something or the pressure comes on or it's a crucial session. We know they're not gonna knuckle down, don't we? They're not going to change. So, we know that England are a side which is prone to collapse. Are you Are you happy with that sort of dream situation? >> Yeah. And I genuinely think we could get the perfect storm because this will really suit England's sort of ego and attitude, won't they? You say to Harry Book, "Right, we've probably got about a session of daylight now. We need to really score quickly because we know it's going to get tougher once those lights come on." Oh, brilliant. I've got caught blanch here. I'm going to go out and and do my stuff. And and to be fair, the Brooks and the Jamie Smith, they are capable of rollicking along at seven and over in daylight when that pink ball goes soft. But time and time again, and
35 it's not just about the pink ball and under lights either, when conditions get tougher for batting, [clears throat] white ball, red ball, pink ball, any ball, and we've seen that actually in the one day stuff in New Zealand recently. That's when England come up short. You only have to look back to that Oval test match. forget how they lost the game. That first innings, Cwley, Ducky absolutely flying along. Weren't they racing away in that first innings? Lunch break came and conditions were tricky. They just been aggressive. Lunch break all changed. Came out. There was no lights that day. It was just poor batting in in testing conditions and we could get the perfect storm again this week. Like Paul says, big partnership and the the scoreboard as well in the day daytime could be could be really rollicking along and that could make the market think, "Oh god, this is a lot
21 easier than we expected." And then bam, lights come on and it all changes. Yeah. And also throw this into the mix. talking about England's arrogance or um the way they play or they like to shock people, they could well go very very hard and try to shove it Australia in, couldn't they? Um for an hour and a half at the end of the day. >> 100% 100%. I I actually think that might be on their mind. I don't want to play too much sort of psychologist here, but wouldn't Stoke love it? Oh, look at us. we've absolutely blitzed along today and we're still the team I can I can afford to declare here. Um, look, I don't want to be too critical, but but they would love to be in that sort of position. So,
06 don't rule that out. And that actually is another thing to consider as well when you if you're backing overs. You don't want to be getting caught short on a surprise declaration from Stokes because, well, we've been there in the past, haven't we? Oh, they're surely going to get 400. And then I think it was Edge Baston wasn't in the last dashes the first test. He he declared just before the close of play. Not many people expecting that. >> Another great reason to why are you short England runs? Uh Paul, any other strategies or markets players that you combine with conditions? >> Uh well, I'm looking at this match run situation. I can't see a quote at the moment from 365 or anyone who usually does it, but I would note the last four matches at Brisb all produce under 900 runs and day matches apart from one. So,
54 you'd expect that to be low. Um, with that in mind, I think it will be over within 3 days. >> Uh, none of the last four four um day nights went 300 overs. Um, we're >> to you can get roughly even money or slightly better than even money if you shop around. You can get 13-8 special offer with bet Fred I believe on day three W finish and then you can get 14 to one with Star Sports and Bet 365 on day one or two. So I would bet those two. >> Great stuff. Quick game is a good game. We do expect this one to be a quick one. Um all the work we've done suggests. So
41 um it is a game which does trip you up though. We know that and and we do caveat with with um it could go completely other way but we I think we'd be surprised if it does. Um one other thing Rich from you that happens in this test. >> Well couple of plays keep an eye and I've mentioned it before so I don't want to keep going over it but Crawley Brooks Smith Lion a lot of overs in this the 2024 test match against West Indies January 2024. Um, surprisingly we keep talking about seam and pace and bounce, but actually lion got through a lot of overs in those day sessions. So I still think a stumping next method dismissal from those three guys is on. And the other one's quite interesting. There was
26 nearly a run out in Australia's first innings involving Cameron Green there. Stokes Green basically just ran on the shot and Travis head was nearly one out. Stokes missed. It was it was very very tight. And I've never rated his running so I had a quick look. He's never been run out in test cricket, but three of his 27 dismissals in one day international cricket have been run outs. And he's also had one in 20 T20s. That's not quite as bad. I just thought that was three in 27. And it it just got me thinking. England a pretty sharp field inside. That's one thing you would say. They've got some good athletes in there. Um so in the day session in particular, if things go flat and you sort of think, how are England going to get a wicket here if the sun's out and the ball ain't doing much? That might be an angry camping. I I assume it's just
11 going to be a monstrous price that sa wouldn't be wouldn't surprise me if by the end of the series Green finds himself run out somewhere along the way. Anyway, >> just another inplay from me and we talked about this weeks ago about old surfboard pads at Joe Root. Uh looking for leg before next method dismissal for him. If you see that ball starting to shape in to those pads of his, uh, he is vulnerable and Australia could well use a leg slip to try and pin him to the crease. And the caveat with all of these in plays is, you know, bet with your eyes first and then the stats. If if you see the ball misbehaving and batters beginning to struggle in the Twilight Zone as we've been talking about, then
00 um happily go and play the markets, but make sure you're seeing it to believe it first. Um just time to tell you 0% margin feature at Seven Bet Sports Book. The 0% margin feature at SevenB is designed to offer betting odds that do not include the typical margin added by the bookmaker. Check out more of their features at sevenbet.co.uk/ features. Let's look at players to follow auto swerve. We'll got some win rates for you. Top Australia first innings bat. Um the start with the ball. We spoke about him on our last show. We pointed out Mitchell Stark even money record in pink ball. Top Australia first innings bat said he was value at 15 to8
46 now 74 365 bet MGM Virgin bet still value despite the cut 31-10 unit bet Steve Smith top Australia first innings run scorer uh is dreadful bet 11% win rate over the last two years same win rate in the second innings by the way and significant drop in averages Smith's second innings definitely an inplay play short if the ball's doing something or he's in that twilight zone at Labashane small bit of value and the only bit of value really on win rate at 9-2 top Aussie first things back bet fair sports but sky bet power 18.7% win rate and we'll give Webster a mention as well three wins in seven that
32 study sample not big enough there but 8 to1 generally Paul players you like or don't like for Australia Well, firstly on that what you just said about Bo Webster, I mean, we don't think he'll play, but um number five or later has won over 50% of the top bats from the markets at Brisbane in the last 5 years. So, he would definitely be value. He's also come close a couple of times. And then you've got the my old favorite Alex Kerry who won in the first match, who won the West Indies, he won in um Sri Lanka. So he is available at up to 12 to1 in places I think with bet 365 but general's 10 to1 top run scorer to have him but just as good a bet is to repeat what I did in the first match on him to
19 score the most sixes for Australia at 10 to one in the first innings again he was the high scoring average sixes hitter inside in the first game may have been overtaken by head but I haven't checked but it's either one of the two either way he's not a 10 to one Um also total match runs depends if he plays but under 56.5 Kawaja bet 36 it's five that is an absolute gift if he does play and Jake Wald under 52.5 also looks too high I think >> uh Richard uh Australia players to follow to swerve I'm not convinced by weather order either actually but >> early days I mean you've got you might have a stronger view I think because you
05 play up the road from you. >> You know, he played at Doncaster a few years ago and yeah, someone was showing me a video of him a couple of years ago. I said he plays in the big bash and and here we are two years on playing in the Ashes. Who'd have thought it? Boy spots are a little well a little bit bigger on Usman Kawaga's first innings run 28.5. I think that's way too high. He looks he looks shocked to me. So I'd definitely be playing unders on Kawaga. Um Nissa 33 to1 top Australia first first innings bat. I think you've got to have a few quid on that. Stakes returned if he doesn't play. But look, I mean, Mitchell start batted number eight in that that first game and he only got 12 and you think, oh well, nowhere near. But Kerry won it with 26. It didn't take a lot of winning. So So Nissa is in the game if he plays. Bowling wise, I'd leave the
51 seven to four, 15 to Mitchell Stark, but I wouldn't mind a bit of um start to take five wickets in the first innings. 11-2 Paddyy Power bet fair and sky bet. Obviously he took us seven for the first innings in pair and 14 to1 with betway for him to take 10 wickets in the match. Look I know that that'll take some doing backto- back 10 wicket halls but it's a day night what's he is 80 is it 83 wickets 81 wickets in in day nights. No one's taken more dayight wickets than him at at 17 as well. A brilliant average. So I think 141's actually a smidge of value there. Yeah, Stark as well bet 365 player performance 128.54 to5 that's taken a cut but it quote in terms of uh player performance is too
39 skinny for what he returns um some way out I think I did look at it earlier in the week top England win rates of first innings and second innings now with the bat root a big swerve in your first dig 18 to5 unibet no thank you he wins on the same rate as a 4 to1 Joe Root last two years. Uh Ste Steve Smith Jamie Smith four wins from 16. We're getting a nice chunky study sample on now on Smith which I'm far more comfortable about taking 12 to one with Bet 365 about Jamie Smith top scoring for England. And Paul's already mentioned where the top scorers come from at this ground. Uh Pope has a 16.6% win rate. looked very tidy, didn't he,
24 in that first innings in Perth. 15-2 unib um 10 bet power sky bet fair sports book a second innings plays is route 29% win rate vast differences between what he does in the first and second innings. Pope awful record in the second by the way so don't get those two mixed up. Uh he'll be a selling player I suspect. Top bowler for me. We've got Atinson 28.5% 3 to1 bet MGM Star Sports Virgin bet. And we'll go to Paul. Um I like Brighton Cast. Um he has now taken 23 wickets in four matches in New Zealand, New Zealand and Australia. Um I don't see him as a 15-4 chance. I think
10 he's going to be their top scorer, top wicket taker over the winter. Very interested in his player performance as well if anyone puts any up. Um and Rich me had me mentioned that market um bet way to take 10 wickets in the match or stars to take five. I think this can value with some of the others. I mean if you get on a roll if a decent fast bowler gets on a roll under lights taking five weeks in a session is very plausible and you look at some someone like Cass Car is 10 to one or he's 33 to take 10 in the match. He took 10 in the match in New Zealand last year. Richard man, what have you got? >> Well, just on bowlers actually, I I've I've got him down. I thought Gus Atinson bowed brilliantly at Perth in that first innings without any luck. I mean, all
56 Carson actually got the headlines, but but Atinson was exceptional and you would think he'll get his rewards at some points and he's the sort of guy who who takes wickets in bucket loads. So, so that could be interesting. Excuse me. I thought Ollle was by far and away England's best player in that first test and I thought his his player performance line with bet 365 I thought that was way too low actually when he comfortably beat that in Perth um and and he just looked to me he just looks like he's tightened up his technique looked a lot more solid and the other thing with him as well is he feels that short leg and with England you know have battering around bowling short and stuff he's liable to get a catcher to he's absolutely brilliant in there anyway. So, I thought 51.5
41 was was way too low. Jake Weatherall's lines higher. I just can't understand that for the life of me. Um, so I'd go with him. Cast first in in sixes for England. 18 to1 bet 365. That's Met. I put it up last time and sure enough, he cpped in the second innings while it was a tie with Atkinson. But I think he's now 156 14 sixes, sorry, in 15 test match innings. That's a really good hit rate when you consider Harry Brook's only got 48 sixes in 52 innings. So if he's mixing it with someone like Harry Brook in terms of strike rate, I'm not sure he's an 18 to1 chance. And look, I know he's not going to make a big score like Brook, but he's going to come down the order. He's obviously just going to swing for the hip. I don't particularly like that attitude when he's batting with a recognized batsman, but that's the way he's going to play. Big strong
27 ball. He can clear the ropes. Uh and obviously if Lion comes on at the end to give the seams a breather, he could wall up a couple straight quite short straight boundaries here at Brisbane. Big square if I remember rightly so. Um yeah, he he's in the game 18 to1. He you know one or two might actually win this if if England score poorly in the first innings. Thank you Richard.
