00 This video is brought to you by Rhino Shield. So, you've just got your new iPhone 17. First of all, congratulations. Today, I'm going to take you through the first 27 things that you should do to get the most out of this phone. Now, these tips and tricks will help you find hidden new features, preserve battery health, extend your battery life, and maximize your iPhone 17's performance. But first, I am giving away this brand new iPhone 17 in white. And for a chance to win, be sure to like this video, subscribe to this channel, and subscribe to my second channel, Techbook by Dion. link in the description. Then comment your favorite feature of the iPhone 17 with your Instagram username and follow me on Instagram at donome where I'll announce the winner on the 31st of October. All right, so to start, we're going to look at preserving battery health. This is very important as this is going to help your battery last longer and by

45 extension your iPhone last longer. So to do this, we are first going to jump into settings and then we're going to scroll to where we find battery right over here. And then we're going to scroll down here to where we find charging. And in here we have two options. Now with iOS 26, first of all, we do have the ability to set a charge limit. Now, why would you want to do this? Well, for lithium ion batteries like the ones in the iPhone 17, it is best to keep the charge at up to around 80 to 90%. So, you can actually set a charge limit, and that is effectively going to reduce the maximum charge of your iPhone. You can see we can bring this down to 95, or we can even bring this down to 90 all the way down to 80. But of course, the downside to this is that it will cost you five or 20% of your battery capacity depending on which you choose. So for

31 most people, including myself, I recommend you actually use the second option. So instead of using the charge limit, we are instead going to use optimized battery charging. And you'll see that we can only use one at a time. And optimize battery charging, I think, is the best of both worlds, where it's going to help preserve your battery health by staggering how your phone charges. So, for example, let's say you plug in your phone when you go to sleep at night at say 11:00 p.m. It's first going to charge from zero up to 80% battery and then wait with the remaining 20% till closer to when you typically wake up and unplug your phone, let's say at 700 a.m. Now, why is this important? Well, this is going to stagger the charge, meaning your phone won't charge as fast, and that's going to produce less heat. And heat is the number one killer for battery health. So, when you're charging at night, you don't need to charge very fast, of course, cuz you

17 have many hours while you're sleeping. And for that, it's going to optimize the charge schedule based on how long your phone is typically plugged in. So, the second option here is the one that I recommend for most people. It is also the one that I use to help preserve my battery health. But if you're a diehard battery health saver, this first option here is what you want to use. And now, briefly, I want to talk about the best way to charge your phone, as I've definitely had some questions from you guys in the comments on previous videos. Now, the iPhone 17s do now charge faster and this is great for certain occasions, but that doesn't mean you always have to charge your fa your battery faster as in fact it is actually better to charge your battery slower. So, for protecting your battery and keeping your battery health as high as possible for as long as possible, it is actually best to use a slower or lower watt charger. For example, a 10 watt brick or maybe even a

04 15 watt brick. Something around there will be best as it's not going to charge your phone as fast and that means there'll be less heat produced. And again, heat is greatly going to deteriorate your battery over time. Now, I also recommend you use a wired connection as opposed to wireless charging as wireless charging because it will produce a lot more heat. You will also notice that your phone is typically warmer when you're charging wirelessly. A lot more energy is lost and it's also going to produce more wear for your battery. So, the best thing to do is to plug in via a wired connection and then use a lower watt brick. Now, does this mean you should never fast charge or never wirelessly charge? No, of course not. If there are moments during the day, for example, you need a quick topup or you've got a handy wireless charger at your desk, that is completely fine to use every once in a while. What is most important is how you charge your phone at night because, well, this is what you

50 do every night. And for that, once again, I recommend using a lower watt charger, 10 15 watts, and a wired connection. That's going to go a long way plus the setting that we looked at earlier to maximizing your battery health and helping your iPhone 17 last longer. Perfect. So now let's take a look at the display of the iPhone 17. This is one of the biggest areas that comes with so many upgrades. Uh the display is now larger, brighter, also faster, finally 120 Hz, so you have really smooth animations. Uh and you also get an always on display for the first time on the nonpro iPhone. So let me show you how to set up the always on display and how to customize it to match your style and uh want. So to do this, we're going to go into settings and then scroll down here to where we find display and brightness. And then in

35 here, we're going to scroll down once more to where we find always on display. Then we're going to tap into that. And then you want to turn that on. And here we have various options. So first of all, we can choose to show or hide our wallpaper. Uh if you show the wallpaper, I'll give you a quick preview here. You'll see that we get a very blurred or rather very dimmed version of our wallpaper, which can be nice if you have like say a picture of a loved one. Uh you also can choose to turn that off. Now I think in some cases it's nice to have it off because it creates a more minimalistic uh always on display. As you can see here, it's also going to consume a bit less battery like this and perhaps uh not be as distracting when it's on your desk. You have the option here to also blur your photo. Uh this again will make it less distracting and to choose show or hide your notifications. I think it's great to have notifications on uh as it's a great way to kind of monitor your phone

20 without having to unlock it and then get distracted in some other app. So, this here is really the setup that I personally use where I just have the clock and then allow for the notifications as well. Keep it super clean, minimalistic. Uh and again this setup will use less battery when compared to showing the wallpaper. But of course if you are very battery life conscious you can choose to also turn off the always on display entirely and that there uh is the bottom option on that list. On the subject of the display I want to talk about PWM. Now PWM is pulse with modulation and this is a screen flickering that is used by OLED screens to help adjust the brightness. Now, there's a small group of people, but I've know from reading your comments that are affected by the flickering of OLED screens. This can cause headaches, it can cause fatigue, eye strains, etc. And Apple have added a very neat feature

05 within the accessibility settings to help remedy this uh if you are affected by PWM. And to change this, what we're going to do is jump into settings and then scroll down to where we find accessibility. And then in here, scroll to display text and text size. And then here we're going to scroll down once more to where we find display pulse smoothing PWM. And you want to turn that on if you are affected by PWM. Now, if you're not affected like me, I suggest you just keep this off. This really is for those who do notice this uh and for whom it does bother. And I think this is a very good addition for Apple from Apple here to add to the iPhone 17s. Next, let's talk about the app. So, one of the first things I do on any new iPhone is change the default apps because we all probably have our favorite browser, messaging apps, etc. Uh, so let me show you where

52 to do this. We're going to jump into settings. Scroll all the way to the bottom to where we find apps right here. And then up here at the top, we have default apps. Let's go ahead and tap into that. And here we can change a myriad of applications as default. You can change your mail client, your messaging app. For example, I like to set that to WhatsApp. You have your browser. Perhaps you want to change it to Chrome. One thing unfortunately that you can change is your maps. I would love to see this added in the future. Personally, I prefer to use Google Maps, but as you can see, this goes a long way to setting up uh the default applications on your iPhone to get your favorite apps uh to always open. And this brings me to a useful feature within the messaging app or really any application that uses a keyboard on your iPhone. And that is how to access the one-handed mode for the keyboard. So, let's say here I've got a message thread. Look at how cute my dog Lucky

37 is. And let's say you're walking down a busy street and you just can't reach the other end of the screen. This will especially apply if you're using the iPhone Air or the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but there are large screens. But this also works on the iPhone 17. And what you can do is press and hold on the globe icon. And then here you have two keyboard options. So we can move the keyboard to the left. And as you can see, that kind of scrunches the keys together and makes it much easier to reach the other end of the keyboard and to finish typing that message without having to bring in your second hand. And to expand the keyboard once more, simply tap on the arrow like so. Now, I'm left-handed, so I have it set to the left here, but I can also adjust it to the right for the same effect. And as you can see, that's going to make typing on your keyboard a lot more comfortable. Okay, this next one is super important if you use your phone to listen to music or basically listen to

24 anything, and I'm pretty sure that we all do. So, as you can see, I've got my AirPods connected, and I want to show you a really neat feature to help protect your hearing health, as your hearing health is so important, and if you're not careful, you can be damaging your ears without even knowing it by simply playing your music a little bit too loud. Now, Apple have added a really handy tool to show you when your music is too loud. So, let me show you how to add this. First, we're going to go into the control center, swipe down from the top right, and then we're going to tap and hold to enter jiggly mode, as Apple call it. You'll see that the edits that the icons start to move here. And then we can tap onto add control. And then what we're going to search for is hearing health. So if we tap onto hearing, there it is. Hearing right over here. We're going to tap into that control. As you can see, that has now been added. Now, let me open up my music and play some songs here. Uh let's go

11 ahead and play this. We'll turn down the volume slightly. And as you can see, if I go over to this U control here, you'll see that we have this little pulse showing how loud the music is or whether it is too loud. So, if I go ahead and turn this up a little bit, there you go. As you can see, it is now too loud and it lets me know. And then to turn it down a little bit. So, we're back in the green. And I can even tap onto this here to get a more expanded view. Watch this as I turn up the volume. There we go. Right now, it is too loud. So, if I listen at this volume for too long, I will be damaging my ears. And I wouldn't know that uh without this control. So, this here I think is a really great feature that I definitely recommend you add for the long term uh to say protect your hearing health. So, very simple and always accessible here within the control center right over there. And next, let's jump into the photos app

57 where I want to show you a really cool new feature and that is called 3D mode. Now, basically, you can turn any photo into a 3D photo with one little adjustment. So, let's go ahead and open any picture. So, here I've got a picture and we have this new icon here in the top right. That is your 3D spatial uh effect here. And we can go ahead and tap on that. Give it a little second to analyze the scene. And check this out. we now have a 3D photo. So, as I move my phone left to right, you'll see the background move and the foreground uh move separately from that to really create that depth effect. I think this actually does a pretty convincing job. If I bring it up close here, uh this just a fun way to kind of relive your photos and add a little bit more life to it. What is also cool is if you choose to set, let's say, this picture as your wallpaper, the same effect will apply.

42 So, with your wallpaper, you can imagine with your clock at the top and your widgets, you can have that same cool 3D effect right on your lock screen. Now, most of this video is software related, but I do have one essential hardware tip. In light of early reports showing the iPhone 17's already scratching, here's how I'm keeping my iPhone shiny and protected. That's where Rhino Shield comes in, providing ultimate protection optimized for the iPhone 17 lineup. Take the new Solid X case, an evolution of the classic solid suit, redesigned for even stronger protection and a sleeker look with exterior reinforcements and a new interior with a shield motif and shock diffusion grooves. Translation: 71% impact energy absorption, so much less impact on your phone, exceeding military drop standards while still

27 light and comfy in the hand. Customization endless. You can match your phone color, outfit, mood, or occasion to express your style. Even choose from collabs like this beauty of Japan design or the show Friends because your phone deserves a case that says how you doing. The clear case got a serious upgrade too with slimmer edges, boosted impact protection, and a lifetime anti-elloing guarantee. And if that doesn't show confidence in their products, I don't know what does. All in a design that is lighter than a piece of bread. You can get the clear case in different tinted colors, and it's also available with MagSafe. The Mont and X case lets you swap bumper and back plate at any time. And unlike Apple's bumper case, this bumper case exceeds military drop protection. But what about the screen? The Impact Protector Pro gives you glass-like clarity and plastic grade

14 toughness. The best of both worlds. Sustainability. Rhino Shield's got that covered, too. All cases are made from a single material, so are 100% recyclable. And right now, Rhino Shield is doing a limited special promotion where if you buy a case, you get a massive discount on the screen protectors. And if you use my link in the description with code Dion 10, you get an additional 10% off your entire order. And now with iOS 26 on the new iPhone 17s, we have a completely redesigned camera app that I want to show you here real quick. So, as you can see, the first thing when we open up the camera app, you'll see it gives you a much cleaner overview. You have your photo and your video mode here at the bottom of the screen. Now, if you are looking for other modes, you can swipe to the right and as you can see, that can bring up the panorama or say your portrait mode. Portrait mode I love

59 to use uh when taking pictures of others. And uh of course you can also get more access to settings by swiping up and this will allow you to turn on things like your live photo or go through your photography style. So overall a big upgrade here to the photo app or to the camera app. I think it's a much cleaner, nicer look. But the biggest upgrade to the camera of the iPhone 17s is this right here. And that is the brand new 18 megapixel uh center stage selfie camera. So, let me quickly show you why this is so special and what this does. So, we're going to pull up the selfie camera. Hello everyone. You can see me here in frame. And with this new square sensor, because this sensor is now square, you can't see it, but it is underneath there. We have some really cool new features. And the first thing we can do is we can with these two new controls here at the bottom. First of all, we can expand to have our view

46 wider. So, this is great if you're taking a selfie with say a significant other. But even cooler is if we then go and take a picture with say a group, instead of having to switch to landscape mode like this, the oldfashioned way, what you can do is instead press a second control here. And check this out. We're now taking a landscape selfie without having to rotate our phone. This is really, really great because this is just a much more comfortable way to hold your phone and still get that super wide shot to bring everyone in frame. And then a couple more tips and tricks I want to show you is here at the top we have a new center stage button along the left side here. And that's going to allow us to turn on both auto zoom as well as the auto rotate. Now, these things are great. If say h you are taking a selfie and it determines that there's more people in frame, it will automatically zoom out and then switch to the uh widescreen mode to get

33 everyone in shot without you even having to press those buttons. And with this in video calls, like on FaceTime, uh this new selfie camera using center stage will also be able to follow you along the frame to keep you in shot if say you've got your phone set up somewhere uh and you're walking in the room. But wait, there's more. I've got one more really cool tip and trick, and that has to do specifically with the main camera on the back of the iPhone 17s, and that is a new dual recording mode. So, to activate this, first of all, we're going to switch to the back camera. Then, we're going to switch over to video mode. And then, what we're going to do is swipe up. And in here, we have dual capture. And we're going to go ahead and tap that. And as you can see, it has now opened both cameras. So, I have my uh selfie camera here at the top of the frame. And then the the back camera here shooting on the majority of the frame. Now, this here is great if say you are

19 capturing a concert or you're at a live event and you want to reh capture both your reaction as well as what's going on uh in front of you. A great way to share life experiences. You can see we can also move the image of yourself around and this will be reflected in the video so you never cover the action. Uh and I think this is here a really creative way to capture videos and I think we'll be seeing a lot of this in social media and group chats around the world. Okay, so now that we've looked at some new camera features on the iPhone 17, let me show you some essential settings to change to unlock the best capture quality for the cameras. As these camera systems on the back are very powerful, but by default, not all the right settings are enabled. So, let me go ahead and show you how to unlock the full quality pictures and video here on the iPhone 17. So, first we're going to jump into settings. And

06 then over here on the main page of settings, we are going to go scroll down to where we find camera. And then in here we are going to scroll once more to where we find formats. And here you want to make sure that resolution control is turned on. Now these are actually 48 megapixel cameras that you have on the back of your iPhone 17. But by default it will take 24 megapixel photos. And by turning on this resolution control setting, we now have the option to capture full 48 megapixel photos. So to change to 48 megapixels, open up the camera app and then here on the top left here we see we have hif. Tap on that and then we can switch over to 48 megapixels and this is going to capture the best quality, the most detail-rich photo possible here on the iPhone 17. Now, one small tip I do have is that the 24

52 megapixel mode will be fine for regular day-to-day photos as this file format will be smaller, so it won't take up as much storage. But for those special occasions uh or things where you want just the best quality photo, I definitely recommend you switch over to 48 megapixels to get all the details. And now let's switch over to video. So if we go back one page here, we have the record video setting and we can actually change what the default resolution is going to be. So by default, this will be set to just 1080p. And I think 1080p is it's not bad, but if you have 4K, you definitely want 4K. In fact, this video you're watching right now is shot in 4K and you want the best possible quality. And I suggest you set it to 4K at 30 fps. Now, you can also set it to 60 fps. This is great if you want to slow the footage down, but for the sake of file

38 size, I think 30 fps at 4K is going to be the sweet spot between maximum quality uh while not having crazy file sizes either. So, definitely recommend you set that to 4K at 30. And just quickly, beneath that here, we have also the option to turn on or off HDR video. Now, HDR video will be on by default. If you don't know what this is, uh this is going to create very bright video and going to give you high dynamic range, which does give you more detail in the darker and lighter parts of the frame. But the downside is well your video will be super super bright. So personally I like to actually turn this off for video and then keep it on for photos. And one setting you definitely want to make sure is turned off is auto FPS. So just beneath that here you want to make sure that that there is turned off. You don't want your frame rate changing while you're recording video. Uh Apple does this to kind of help keep your shot

24 brighter if you're filming uh say late at night, but in reality it creates choppy and very inconsistent video that especially if you want to edit, it's just going to be a pain to work with. So definitely want a consistent frame rate and make sure that that there is turned off. And one new really cool feature with iOS 26 that is very handy is actually going to prompt you to clean your lenses if the camera detects that they are dirty. Of course you use your phone all day. Sometimes you need to give your lenses a quick wipe to get the best quality photos. And it will actually prompt you to do that. So to make sure it does that, you want to make sure that this setting here is activated by going back one page within the camera app within the camera settings menu. And then we're going to scroll down here to where we find lens cleaning hints. And then it will show you that prompt you within the camera app to clean your lens if it is needed. Ultimately going to result in even better photos. And next I

12 want to show you visual intelligence. Now for this you'll have a new control here within your control center. This is the visual intelligence control right here. If you don't have it, we can simply tap onto add control and then search for visual intelligence. There it is right there. Now what does this allow you to do? Well, this here is pretty cool as it basically allows you to point your camera at anything and ask chat GPT or well, Apple Intelligence and then by extension chat GPT for more information about what you point your camera at. So, let's say here I've got this bottle of cologne. We can go ahead and open up visual intelligence. And as you can see, it will open up an app that looks similar to the camera app. And then you simply want to snap a picture of whatever it is you want to learn more about. There it is. And here we can choose to either do a reverse image search on Google to see more similar

57 products or we can even ask ChatGBT more about what this is. So if I go and tap on ask, we'll tap on continue here. And as you can see, it is now asking Chat GPT to analyze what is on screen. And here it is. It has successfully pulled up the correct bottle of cologne here. And then if I want shopping results, I can go ahead and do a reverse image search. And this here is going to give us results from Google to quickly find this cologne uh and buy it if we like. So this here is very very useful uh for basically anything that you want to point your camera at. This could be a product that you see in store an ingredient if you want to learn more about it. Uh and this also works with screenshots. So let's say for example here I've got a YouTube video pulled up. I take a screenshot and as you can see we have a completely overhauled screenshot menu. And what I can do now is essentially circle anything that's on

44 screen to learn more. So let's say I'm watching this video here and I want to learn more uh about that game. What I can do is then swipe up here and it's going to give us results from Google to learn more about this specific game. Or if say I want to ask ChatGBT to learn what game this is. So let's see here. Asking ChatGpt. There we go. Cyberpunk 2077. Great game by the way. One of my all-time favorites. And as you can see that is a great way to learn more about anything that's on screen. So like here I'm watching a video and say I want to learn more about the game that's shown in that shot. I can simply take a screenshot and then ask chat GPT to learn more. Sometimes it is easy to forget, but the iPhone 17 is well a phone. And sometimes we do use it to make and receive phone calls. But you know what's really annoying? Spam calls. Well, Apple have thankfully added a new setting within

30 iOS 26 that is available on the iPhone 17 that is going to greatly reduce, if not eliminate spam calls altogether. I've already used this over the past weeks and it has been truly truly great. So, let me show you how to add this. What we're going to do is go into settings, scroll all the way down to apps, and in here, we're going to scroll down to P for phone. You can also search for it. There it is. And then once we're in the phone settings, we're going to scroll down to screen unknown callers. And here you have three options. And I suggest you go for ask reason for calling. Now, when you get a call from someone who is not saved in your contacts, your iPhone will actually answer for you on your behalf. Ask the caller to leave their name and the reason for calling. and then only then will it ring through, show you that information on screen so you can then decide whether you want to take the call

15 or not. This is fantastic. I have not noticed any spam calls over the past week and that here is a great achievement. And from the phone, let's go back to messages where there's a couple of cool new features that I want to show you where first we can actually change the background of an iMessage thread. So, what you want to do is pull up a thread with your favorite person. Then you want to tap onto their name and then here we have backgrounds. And here we have a wide range to choose from. So you can choose any photo that's on your phone. You can also choose from a series of colors. You'll see there is a lot of variety to choose from. These also kind of animate. You can even set the colors yourself. But the ones I like most are going to be the variations of the sky. I particularly like this first one here, haze. We can go ahead and tap on the check mark. And as you can see, that has now been applied. And the entire thread will now have this background. Now this

01 will also carry over to all your other devices as well as the recipient. So, this is really fun to kind of uh customize your chats a little bit more. Other messaging apps have had this for a long time, so it's great to see this in iMessage as well. Speaking of iMessage, you'll see here that I've sent a bunch of photos here to my wife. And you want to make sure that you always send the best quality photos in iMessage. But first, there is a setting that you want to make sure is activated. And to do this, we're going to jump into settings. And then from here, over on the main page of settings, we are going to scroll down to where we find apps. and then go back to where we find messages. So, under M and in here, we're going to scroll all the way down here to where we find send lowquality preview photos. You want to make sure that that there is turned off because this way it will send the original file. In other words, the

47 best quality photo when you're sharing photos and videos for that matter with loved ones. This is one of the things I love about iMessage compared to other uh messaging platforms like, for example, Facebook Messenger, which will heavily degrade your photos. And in this case here, you get to send the full quality photos. Just make sure that that setting there is turned off. And did you know you can also edit and unend messages within iMessage? So, let me give you a quick preview. Let's say I send this message here and I make a mistake. What you can do is tap and hold onto that message. And then we can tap onto edit where we can then change anything within that message. So, let's say instead of 10 minutes, it's going to be 20 minutes. After all, I am still filming this video. And then we can tap on the check mark. And as you can see, that will then send. Now the recipient will be able to see that the message has been edited but won't be able to see uh the edit history. Now we can also unend the

34 message entirely by tap and holding on the message and then we can tap on to undo send. As you can see that message will then disappear from the thread. Now both editing as well as und unending a message can be done for up to 15 minutes after you send the text. Next I want to show you instant text. So here within the messaging app, you see I've got an example where if I type the characters om, it will automatically enter the entire phrase on my way. And this is a great way to quickly share information or quick responses uh within a text. And let me show you how to add a couple more and some of my suggestions to add. So to do this, we're going to jump into settings and then tap onto general and then scroll down to where we find keyboard right here. And then you want to tap onto text replacement. And here we can add any more that we like as well. So what we can do is we can go in

19 and tap in the phrase. So that could be for example your address. It could be an email address and then the shortcut. So what I have for example set up on my personal phone is if I type in two at symbols at the same time it will automatically enter my full email address. Uh I can also tap type in home a that will then enter my home address with one. So, if you add a bunch of these, I think this is a really fantastic way to quickly send details and information uh or even have quick responses like here on my way uh to say friends and family. And now I'm going to show you how to save money. Yes, it is so easy to pile up on subscriptions that it's hard to lose track and know how many exactly you have, which subscriptions are active, and also how to cancel those subscriptions. Well, thankfully Apple do make this quite easy. So, what we're going to do is we're going to tap into settings here. And over on the main page of settings,

06 we're going to tap onto your name. And then we're going to tap onto subscriptions. And in here, you're going to find a list of all your subscriptions. You see, I keep things quite clean. I have Apple Music and iCloud Plus. Really great, by the way, uh to talk to to back up your phone. But more on that later. Uh but you'll see here an entire list of all your subscriptions. And if there's one you want to cancel, simply tap into it. And then right there, with pretty much one tap, you can cancel the subscription. I love how easily Apple makes this. Uh, and this is a great way to go through and say remove game subscriptions or app subscriptions that you don't use that may be charging your account every month. And now I want to show you how to lock and also hide applications on your iPhone 17. This can be great for privacy as well as security. So to do this, first you want to find an application that you want to lock and hide. So let's

51 say I'm going to pick up Monopoly Go right here. Uh, and what we're going to do is tap and hold on this application. And here you have the option to require Face ID. And if we tap onto that, we then have two options to choose. First, we can require Face ID. So this way when we open the application, it'll be required to scan Face ID once again before the app will start running. And then secondly, you can also hide and require Face ID. And that's what I want to show you here. So first, we're going to tap on hide and require Face ID. It will then require Face ID to unlock it. Tap on hide app. And as you can see, the application will then be completely hidden from your home screen. So how do you find this application? Well, now if we have to scroll all the way to the right to where we get to the app library, then scroll all the way down to the bottom, tap on hidden, use Face ID, and as you can see, the app will then

37 appear. We can then see the application, but then again, to open the app, we have to scan once more for maximum security and protection. Yes, no one will ever know that I play Monopoly Go. And this is a great way to add some privacy and protection and hide apps uh that you want to keep more private on your phone with extra layers of security with Face ID. On the subject of security and privacy, let's make your iPhone more private. As of course, our phones these days have so much personal data and I think it's important to do an audit every once in a while of knowing which applications have access to what. Specifically, things like your location, uh things like your photos as well as your camera. And to do this, we're going to jump into settings. And from here, we are going to scroll to where we find privacy and security. And in here, first

24 of all, let's take a look at location. So, you'll see here, you see all the list of applications that want to have access to your location. And what you can then do is tap on an individual app and then change this to either never allow or only allow while using the app. I think either is okay. What you want to make sure is not selected unless you're really sure is always. For example, as you can see, Instagram, if I'm not careful, will always have access to my location. Something that is obviously not necessary. They only need my location temporarily. If, say, I'm making a post and I want to tag a location. And then even then, they don't need access to my precise location, right? They don't need to know the street I'm at. They just need to know the city or town if I'm on holiday or something. So, what you can do is turn off precise location. And that's only going to give Instagram uh in this case access to your rough location, not the

11 precise location, and only give that information while you're using the app. So, that is a really, really fantastic setting to set up. I'm of course picking here on Instagram, but it applies to basically all applications on your phone. Again, go through this list and make sure that you never see the word always, cuz if you do, you really want to go in there and think, does this app really always need to know where I'm at? Probably not. So definitely suggest you change them to while using or turn off ones that don't need it. For example, Shazam that doesn't need my location, right? Or I hate ironing. They don't need that either. So these are apps that I just turn off entirely and other ones you really want to audit and make sure uh you know what they have access to and what not. And then if we go back one page, we have tracking. Now in here, you want to make sure that that there is turned off. So you may occasionally get

57 a popup of applications asking to track you. uh this here is going to disable that popup from even showing. This means that apps won't be able to track what you do across your phone within other applications or say web browsers. So really I see no reason to have this on and I definitely recommend you turn this off. By the way, this is not just important for privacy, but it can even help you save some battery. And then I'm not going to go through all of these individually, but you can go through all these different parts of your phone to see what apps have access to what. So just to give you one example, if we take a look at photos here, you'll see that we have multiple applications that will request access to my photo library. But you can see that most of them I have set to limited access. So if I tap onto Instagram, for example, you'll see that it only has access to a select number of photos and videos. I can tap to edit that selection instead of my full library of say 5,000 photos. They don't

44 need that. So I can only uh give it access to say posts that I plan to share. Same thing goes for other apps like eBay. Uh, and I can make an exception here like WhatsApp. I will give access to all my photos. But this really comes down to personal preference. But again, it's good to know which apps have access to which data. And I suggest you also go through other ones like your photos, your contacts, your calendars, right? Uh, as well as things like your camera access just to go through this whole privacy and security setting once just to make sure that everything is up to date for your privacy. And from privacy, let's take a look at some essential security settings. So over here on the main page of settings, we are going to scroll down to where we find Face ID and passcode. Then we'll have to type in our passcode. And here I've just got a couple of quick settings to show you where first you want to make sure that require attention for Face ID is turned on. Now this means

31 that to unlock your phone, not only does Face ID need to see your face, but you'll also have to actually make eye contact with your phone to unlock. So it kind of adds a second layer of protection. That is something I definitely recommend you turn on. Now, beneath that, we also have the option to turn on stolen device protection. This is something I also recommend you turn on. What this is going to do is essentially set a time delay between the ability to set key to change key settings on your phone, like for example, your uh passcode or your Apple ID password when you are away from home. So let's say for example your phone gets lost or gets stolen and that person then tries to change your face ID or sorry your Apple ID password. They won't be able to do that without that 1 hour uh security delay which gives you time to go home and log into iCloud and say remotely lock or wipe the phone. So this

16 is something I definitely recommend you turn on and only allow this or only enable this when you're away from familiar locations. Of course at home if you're the one changing these settings that is fine. You don't need that delay but away from home I definitely recommend you turn that on. Now, probably the most important setting, and I've said this in previous videos, but I'm going to reiterate it here to make sure everyone knows. That is this section here. Always allow access when locked. Basically, by default, most of these are going to be on. And my suggestion is start by turning all of these off. What this is basically going to determine is what you want your phone to do while it is locked. And I keep my phone locked for a reason, and I don't really want it to do much unless I have access to it or say my wife, right? Someone who can access my phone. Uh, so I start by turning all these off. And the ones that I do turn on are going to be lock screen widgets. That's to see like the the temperature. Live

01 activities. That's to keep track of my activity rings on my Apple Watch. Um, and the same thing goes here for workout data. But you don't want things like Siri to be on, right? Siri can be used to send messages. Uh, control center to change things on your phone. These are things you don't want to be accessible uh when your phone is locked. And finally, here at the bottom, we have the erase data option. Now, this is something that I turn on. I recommend it for most people. What this is going to mean is if say your phone is lost or stolen and someone tries to brute force their way in by guessing your password, if they get it wrong 10 times in a row, your data will automatically be completely wiped. So this means that even when your phone is lost and no longer uh safe, at least your data is. So this is one that I personally keep on just for uh peace of mind. Now I do make some exceptions. I think if say you are a young parent or you may have some

48 annoying siblings or friends who are going to then try and guess your password and you know make sure your phone wipes itself every week, you don't want that either of course. Um so in that case I suggest you don't use this. But for most people this here is a really good uh lifesaver and just a reassuring feature to have on. Now also if you do activate this you want to make sure that you have a backup of your phone. And there's two ways to back up. One is to back up to your computer which is free but is more timeconuming because it requires you to plug your phone in and requires you to have quite a lot of free storage on your computer. Something I personally don't have. So what I actually recommend is to back up via iCloud. So over in settings here you want to tap on the main page then tap onto iCloud. And here you have iCloud backup. And you want to make sure that that there is turned on. You see I have it turned on here for my main phone. Uh

34 and this this phone it's not but for my main phone you can see there I have it on. And this here is really really important. Now, you will probably have to pay for this as free you will only have 5 GB with iCloud, which isn't a lot, but for $1, you will get 50 GB. And I have uh $3 per month, and I have $200. And I think that's really sufficient. And for $3 a month, which is what, $36 a year to have always a ready, up-to-date backup of my phone if it is needed. So, let's say this phone is lost or stolen. I just buy a new phone, restore from that backup, and act like nothing's ever happened because all of my data will be there. This will copy over everything, your messages, your apps, your photos, all that. And it does a backup every night when you plug in your phone to make sure it is always up to date. It works perfectly in the background. You see, I don't have many subscriptions as

19 we saw earlier in this video, but iCloud is one of the few that I can personally wholeheartedly recommend just for that peace of mind. And there you have it. Let me know if you have any questions at all. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you check out my Apple Watch first things to do video as well. And don't forget to protect and add a new look to your iPhone. Head to Rhino Shield with my link in the description and use code Dion 10 for 10% off. Thank you so much for watching this video and I'll see you in the next one. Take care.
