How To Unlock Insane Video Editing Creativity

Brief Summary

This video introduces the EFC workflow, a method designed to help video editors achieve and maintain a flow state for optimal productivity and creativity. The EFC workflow consists of three steps: Eliminating distractions, Focusing on creative tasks, and creating Contrast by taking breaks to recharge. By implementing this workflow, video editors can improve their concentration, produce higher-quality work, attract more clients, and avoid burnout.

  • Eliminating distractions is crucial for warming up the brain and achieving a flow state.
  • Focusing on creative tasks, rather than organisational tasks, maximises creative output.
  • Creating contrast through breaks allows for mental recharge and fresh ideas.

Introduction to Flow State for Video Editors

The video introduces the concept of the Flow State and how it applies specifically to video editing. It addresses the common advice on achieving a Flow State and introduces the EFC workflow, designed to help video editors concentrate, enter a Flow State, and produce their best work. The goal is to provide viewers with a practical method to enhance their editing process, leading to more clients and increased earnings.

Eliminating Distractions

The first step of the EFC workflow involves eliminating distractions to allow the brain to warm up and focus. It's essential to resist the brain's urge to seek distractions and instead commit to a 20-minute period of uninterrupted work. Drawing on insights from Dr. Huberman, the video emphasises the importance of warming up the brain before expecting peak performance. Practical steps to eliminate distractions include closing unnecessary browser tabs and social media, using headphones to block out sound, and isolating the lights to create a focused environment.

Focusing on Creative Tasks

The second step, focusing, centres on channelling the Flow State towards creative tasks directly related to video editing. It advises against getting bogged down in organisational tasks like file management during editing. The video encourages editors to embrace a more chaotic workspace during the creative process, similar to a painter who focuses on their art without worrying about the mess. Additionally, it recommends preparing a template project with pre-set sequences and settings to streamline the editing process and maintain creative momentum.

Creating Contrast Through Breaks

The final step involves creating contrast by taking breaks to recharge after periods of intense focus. Recognising that mental energy is finite, the video advises against pushing through feelings of irritation or self-doubt. Instead, it recommends taking a break of one to three hours to disconnect from the project, engage in different activities, and allow the brain to recover. This contrast between focused work and relaxation can lead to new ideas and a renewed sense of creativity, enabling editors to return to their projects with fresh perspectives.

0:00 Flow State you've probably heard this word hundreds of thousands of times every productivity Guru every YouTuber these days is teaching you this idea of the Flow State and how really efficient and productive you become and even though everybody mentions how to enter and be in that state very few of them my friends actually mentioned what kind of work you will be doing you during that state you can be writing a book you can be creating content you can be studying Is That Flow State the same for everyone is it the same for video editing and that's why for the past years I've been following almost every advice on how to actually achieve Flow State from waking up and jumping into Flow State to changing my environment and working at it in a coffee shop and after practicing trying and refining each technique I've developed my own Flow State workflow

0:46 that is specially designed for us video editors and it is called EFC workflow and right now to this day this workflow helps me concentrate on video editing enter a closed State while I'm at my timeline and help me produce the best results and in this video I will share this EFC workflow with you so that by the end of this video you know exactly how to implement an enter your own situation how to enter Flow State while you editing and how you can produce the best results for your clients which will result in you getting more clients and getting more money remove all the distractions and just listen carefully EFC workflow the flow state for video editors EFC stands for eliminating focusing and contrast now I want you to understand that this is a step-by-step process and you can skip the first one

1:33 and jump straight in the second one you have to first eliminate then you have to focus and then you have to contrast what exactly should you eliminate for example I start editing a project five minutes in and I'm like oh I don't think I'm feeling this way right now I probably not that creative I should go rest but that's not you your brain is telling you come on dude let's just distract ourselves let's just watch some Tick Tock let's just scroll in so let's just watch some let's just offer whatever you should eliminate all distractions that come to you while you're at your timeline you actually have to spend 20 minutes without any distractions and it's not my words Dr huberman from huberman Lab podcast State none of us would expect to walk into the gym and do our PR lift or you know a performer go do something without warming up the

2:18 brain also needs to warm up and start to hone in which circuits are going to be active it's unreasonable for us to think oh I've got an hour I'm going to plop down and write beautifully for an hour my best work we need to accept that there's a period of agitation and stress that companies the dropping into these highly concentrated States and distractions can be endless for example you sit down work on your timeline then a Twitter message pops up okay what is that I'm reading I'm replying my brain already focuses on that and my flow charge which was at some percentage right now is basically had to be reset because my brain now concentrates on the text and now if I spend 20 minutes looking at the text message I will become the best writer because my brain will enter a flow State and it will put all of his energy and all of this effort to writing the best

3:04 text message possible but now my creative flowchart is at zero percent because I've already distracted this all comes from the Neuroscience it's backed by research and so you have to make sure you eliminate all of the distractions whenever you're working on a timeline and here's how you can actually do it first of all when you open Premiere DaVinci or whatever software you're using I guess bro bro close everything else close all the browser tabs close the YouTube close the social media you and your timeline only secondly you have to remove all the sound distractions and you can do it by wearing headphones and I encourage you to invest in yourself and buy yourself a great headphones and I'm not talking about earphones even though okay airpods they do sound cancellation but it's not like that when you're wearing headphones your brain feels like there's a lack of space in your own isolation which is

3:50 perfect for Creative flow if you didn't know Stephen King actually writes his books in basements in very isolated spaces because if you are constrained in your space that's actually better for the creativity because your brain is working in this close environment it immerses you inside of the video you start to live there edit it in headphones you truly can understand me how in-depth the sound Becomes of your timeline and how everything else just becomes nothing and the final thing you want to do while you're sitting there and waiting for 20 minutes for that creative flow to come in isolate the lights when you're editing at night the the lights are dimmed or there's no lights is a completely different feeling it's just you and the timeline and now you're all in in that process rather than if you're sitting during the daytime when it's sunny whereas humans

4:36 are tend to go to watch the Sun so if it's sunny but you have to edit you really have to close the windows with whatever you have and isolate the lights and if it's night edit without lights it's like in cinema when you go to the cinema how do you get fully immersed and if you sit like this and end it for 20 minutes you'll notice how you become more creative you'll notice how ideas start pop-up in your head from out of nowhere whoa that's a great idea I have to apply oh that's gonna look so cool oh and this and this you entered the Flow State now you're ready to do your best you have to focus only on the tasks that's related to editing on the creativity so the F stands for focus and what I mean exactly is creative focus and let me explain what it is you don't want to be in a flow state of organizing files when you download them like for

5:22 when you download b-roll or sound effects put them all to your desktop doesn't matter don't organize them while you're editing because you'll just waste your time in creating folder okay this is beep machine sound effects this is stock footage don't do it don't do it guys video editing is a creative process and while you're doing your creative process you have to be like the painter you know who just draws for example when I edit my desktop looks like a complete mess and you know what I don't care because I'm editing I'm not cleaning I will clean after my work is done after I do my sculpture after I paint my picture I can clean my room while I'm doing it I don't care what is happening on my desktop I see that's cool beer okay download put it and start working with it I don't care where is it I don't care how much it weighs I don't care if I have to download it once again I don't

6:08 care about my computer capacity or its storage I'm just working and when I'm working this is my number one priority second one is you actually have to have the prepared template project every time you open your software and start editing setting up the sequence connecting the libraries which you're gonna use do when the sound mixing all over again no create yourself a template project for example you can have multiple sequences with different ratios and you know okay now I'm editing a YouTube short you open that sequence and it already had the prepared settings for you because you worked so freaking hard not distracting yourself for 20 minutes not to organize your project you sit down you edit and you have everything prepared for you you do that and on the Second Step you will feel like there's a gift from God coming through you and you're doing your Masterpiece and believe me in most cases

6:53 it is you're doing your best when you're at your Flow State it doesn't feel like there's time you don't care about anything in these moments you feel like yo I really visualize and I manifest something from my brain to the timeline and this is the best feeling you can have as a video editor that's why actually guys call us visualizers because we're not video editors video editor is the Premiere Pro is The DaVinci Resolve video editor is the tool that helps you visualize ideas because what do you do with the source material you put it on the timeline and you out of this raw uh unemotional gray even you know uncolored stuff you paint the picture you portray a feeling make the viewer experience what you want to experience and where does it come from it comes from your head it comes from

7:39 your brain from your imagination from your creativity and the video editing is just a tool for you to visualize that idea on the timeline and for person to feel to experience it and to see it and be like whoa and to feel the same thing you felt when you were creating that's the art of video editing and that's actually called visualizing through video editing and it's only achievable through the creative Flow State now it leads us to the third step the C the contrast and what do I mean by that our energy our brain energy and our powers are not infinite there's really a limit to it you can train it but there's a limit to it and so after you're in that high peak State you're doing your best you will start to feel a little irritated you will start to feel that okay maybe that

8:24 doesn't work and then you start doubting yourself and then you start thinking about whether the whole thing is good again and you start re-watching it maybe you start to cutting some other stuff ignore all of that ignore all of that that is just a false sign and it will only ruin your timeline believe me I've had this mistake takes a lot myself and it's a really false sign and in these moments I know we're excited we want to finish the project to see the full picture and that's why we can Rush sometimes okay I want to see the full picture how it looks how it looks but it's better in the moments of Doubt when the flow starts to go off now just chill a bit recharge go off close the timeline that's it one two three hours turn off the computer go outside walk think let the brain restore think about something different the battery is low you have to

9:10 recharge it and when you start thinking about something different and walking on the street and chilling maybe meditating doing any other activities you will start have the ideas popping up to your head and that's why it's called the contrast because it's black Why Don't Force It creativity can be forced because after you relaxed after you recharge and full of creative ideas again you can implement the EFC workflow one more time and then you will notice that after a week your projects are now better clients are coming you even more because whoa there's such a great video that you provide and you feel yourself fulfilled not burnt out and just live a happy life as a video editor that's what we're trying to do right here help as much video editors as possible with all that we got we try to bring new clients visualizers club we really try to find

9:56 clients and give it to you so you can just straight to work and do your creative thing we provide you with unlimited assets go check it out it's a very fun place to be and I'm not talking fun it's like the best place to be for a video editor and I truly believe it and implement the EFC workflow and as always
