0:57 celebrate the new year than recording our podcast episode about Digimon the movie yeah and I know that there was just like a new movie Rel like not a new movie but a new version of this movie released in addition to the versions of all three movies that have been infamously cut down to fit this one movie released as an English dub for the first time and I said no we have been watching the original dub that I grew up withh so we were going to stick with that for the movie yeah I'm glad we did I am too I feel I'm the authentic experience the Digimon experience oh my God so I'm going to start us off with some trivia about the movie okay okay so this released on October 6 2000 which I

1:45 think I'm correct which I often man I often am correct let's be real according to my extensive research here the English St of Digimon Adventure 2 had only just started airing an off August oh of 2000 so that third segment made no sense to people well it did come out after it started airing okay yeah but it was like I mean I knew who Davis and Yoli and Cody were okay so this is a famously edited down version of three other movies okay didim my adventure our war game and definitely not doing some research right

2:31 now and Digimon Adventure 02 hurricane touchdown the golden digimentals that's wild title yeah edited into Digimon the movie which definitely was totally not made to compete with Pokemon the first movie and Pokemon the Movie 2000 totally they haven't even heard of Pokemon yeah they're like Pikachu who is that yeah God bless you Kaz in yeah so Digimon the movie has a drastically different plot and had a lot of budget constraints so more than 40 minutes of scenes from Individual films were cut to save time resulting in changes in tone dialogue and the plot yeah also like the overall feel being a bit choppier I

3:16 would say due to the number of changes the Press considered it an original work rather than a dub of a foreign film okay the Press yeah New York Times weighed in the Press despite negative critical reviews the film has had a positive reception from fans and audiences developing a cult following the tracks I can say that like growing up in the phandom of Digimon especially like as we got more on the internet ironically though there was a big debate between the original Japanese version being Superior and this version being you know trash garbage but I always like kind of thought this version was fun I've never seen the original versions so um did you not is the name of the first short film

4:02 it is about 20 minutes which is the length of a regular episode of Digimon pretty much yeah and I think we saw most of that because it it was above that the sources are saying that has the least amount cut from every film from all the films yeah our war game has some Cuts dialogue and the editing is a bit choppy Matt and TK subplot in that film is cut down okay um and the image quality is considered worse and from the image the examples I saw of the original versus the dub it does seem like the picture is altered I don't get that like how do they make it worse just by dubbing it you know what I mean I don't know how it all works I'm I'm not a scientist yeah it's just I'm not a doctor hurricane touchdown has big changes to its story and plot and overall the biggest changes

4:49 are the soundtrack Y which many critics of the film say lead to a drastic change in tone and mood but that is kind of indicative of of Digimon Adventure yeah CU a lot of the songs that are play on the soundtrack are songs that play in the episodes yeah so it's it's it's kind of a play it's mostly playful music it's it's like Po up be pop punk and like sca sca yeah SCA will never die oh my God so the first the other major change is the Angela Anaconda short added to the beginning of the movie what a wild like Time Capsule that was that in there honestly me and Angela back both excited for the Digimon movie I'm not really I don't have any hot

6:19 so now we're going to get into the movie okay which opens with the digi wrap okay first of all bars bars we goes hard we need Kendrick on this yeah yeah we need Megan we need Megan on this they would do what I bet yeah they grew up watching Digimon they're both like your age I'm older than Megan younger than Kendra yeah but I bet but only by like a couple years in each Direction they're like they're nerds I bet oh yeah so the movie starts off with a fight scene mhm between Greymon and a another Digimon yeah some bird lady and then we got narration from 02 Ki yeah and she introduces us to like the concept of Digimon this is probably for like the kids who didn't really watch Digimon and

7:05 like the parents of those kids that did watch Digimon but brought them to the theater anyway yeah so K introduces us to Willis he is an American Digi Justin it has two Digimon and apparently basic the way they animate him is a ghost child he's like pale and translucent the past scenes are like of Willis are all done in this like very light like Vaseline filter yeah well it's that Drag Race season 1 filter I feel like those scenes that we see of Willis are edited from Hurricane touchdown and put into this part of the movie yeah so overall I felt like hurricane touchdown had a it was more in that kind of glossy like style yeah so maybe they weren't even in

7:51 the original film yeah happy New Year happy New Year it went from fireworks to a thunder storm so we'll see how this goes yeah so then it we go from Willis to little baby Ty and Ki in their bedroom a digiegg appears from their computer M as a digital anomaly starts happening where all like we see all like the numbers on the clocks and like the machines are all like kind of freaking out mhm and immediately I noticed that the animation style is a lot better yeah it's not just still images panning across a still background it's not just like the same image flipped yeah it's like it's like actually animated like a film like a St like not Studio J level but like that kind of style where

8:36 like there's a lot of like little movement and like detail that happens so didj appears and we get we get a lot of whistle tone from K uhuh here very um Ariana Grande as Glinda which cuz she has a little whistle yeah she that was a joke than you sorry which does she wear that whistle throughout all of Adventure she has like a thing around her neck it's a whistle she has a whistle and then in 02 she has a camera right so this dig appears and hatches into bamon in a cute sequence where Ki whistles out the um the light Motif the light motif of Digimon Theme Song and bamon replies with its own

15:35 Aquaman's like gone right he disappears yeah yeah so then we cut to four years later well wait are we going to talk about this segment if you want to yeah I kind of want to give my thoughts on each segment as we go that work that so I like this I like the animation I like that it's like a k a a I keep calling him Kai a tying Centric story like I like it's like about their relationship which you know I famously love and think is very healthy yeah yeah it is not very healthy it is still weird to me that even has children they're sharing a room yeah and then I think as like its own Standalone thing I like it I don't love it as an origin story with the context of knowing

16:24 what happens in the show because one why the hell doesn't Tai already know what Digimon are when they go to the digital world if he went through all this like that makes no sense to me I think that there was I'm not sure when this aired I think this might have aired first but I'm I'm not sure if this aired before the oh like in Japan in Japan this aired before the series started or not but I'm that doesn't really bother me because I've kind of suspended my disbelief to like just know that this is the origin story because they later established that this is the origin story in Adventure we learn that all of these kids they well you know what else is cuz in the show this is labeled as a terrorist attack right so they're all

17:12 little so maybe they just Mis remember it until they like get clarity yeah they it's kind of like a thing where they're not meant to fulfill their Digi Destiny right now so they're not going to really remember it until it's time that's how I interpret it that that can accept my other major issue with it is I know it's a different auman but based on everything we see here it makes no sense for aaman to be Tai's partner Digimon and not K's like this story is Ki is the one bonding with aaman throughout like like through Boton through coron the end it's Tai that wakes up that's true that's true but like I think that the reason why AAR is not K's partner Digimon is

18:02 that auman is the mascot Digimon of Digimon as a brand and Tai is the main human character so they're going to be partnered together and I think that aguman works so well as a partner Digimon that they've brought him back like three other times a partner Digimon to different characters in the series yeah I get why they did it from a business perspective I just feel like the the the takeaway I got emotionally from this story was like K and aaman really bonded and Ty like was doing everything he could to like stop their mom from seeing uh like to like keep Ki safe like he was trying to like clean up the mess that was happening because of the relationship that was developing

18:48 like I didn't get a lot of relationship developing between Tai and aaman Ki bonds with all kinds of digima that's true so I think and I think it was Ki like there's a lot of stuff of like fate with Ki I think that like okay so she was she's destined to become a Digi justtin but she fate decreed that she was sick when they went to the summer camp so gachaan was lost to maybe it was the gachan was lost so Ki had to be sick because gachaan wasn't going to be there to reach her okay that I could that I could see so anyway yeah so so ultimately I liked it I did think how it fits into the cannon is a little murky

28:46 for somebody yeah and he's just like deleting data but then even like like can't I remember oh my God why can't I remember her name Sora no no Mimi Mimi I want to say may um it's 1 a.m so my brain's a little fried uh Mimi's like in Hawaii so like her regular phone isn't R and like Matt and TK like are with their grand the grandma does not how answer the phone right I think that the implication with Mimi is also is that she's so popular that everybody's calling her so her phone her voice mail is filed out yeah and Sora is still mad about this freaking hair clut yeah but Sora it seems like also CU she's trying there's a couple instances where Sora almost gets involved in the action and you know God forbid that yeah so but Izzy leaves and then comes back

29:33 cuz he has a satellite uplink where they're going to connect to like the NASA satellite basically M it's crazy Izzy is so cool I like how Izzy Centric this segment is actually is he's kind of the real hero of they in in the Digimon Adventure 2020 reboot they basically do like a multi-episode Arc that is a similar plot line okay and the director of this film mamaru Hoda also made a similar film called Summer Wars that is a very similar plot to this okay so infont is oh infont is in New York City heading for Willis mhm so we see

30:20 that uh Matt and TK are able to get to the inter they're able to get in touch with Tai and they're able to get pon gaban into the internet yeah and they're able to join the fight so but infron again has absorbed a lot of data yeah and so he dig evolves to diaboromon who I thought was so scary so scary as a child yeah very even a scary name yeah well it's you know it's like Diablo literally yes um so Izzy gets taken out briefly by Mrs kamya's cooking mhm and and the internet battle is not going well no Pon and Tenon have been taken out by um diaboromon and kids around the world are

31:06 watching and sending hate mail to Izzy yeah well also Tai hits the computer and it crashes so like yeah the like uh aan or at this point he's is he War gon in this I think now they are War gon a little so so war gmon is like riant on taies like active participation on the computer end for him to like function in this like internet realm thing um so when the computer crashes he like literally freezes and like they had the upper hand against diaboromon and then because the computer crashes uh waron just like checks out um and allows diaran to like win and escape and leave them in kind of Dire Straits so we then

31:52 see that di Borman GI boron has also been sending izy emails mhm taunting him basically basically yeah and he sends an email with an it's very ominous email with that starts a 10minute timer and we discover that he has access to the nuclear codes and is sending missiles specifically to Tai's neighborhood in Japan in Colorado which is where Willis is from which is where Willis is from we learn later on Adam what the hit the Pentagon he liter they literally say that he is in his he has invaded the Pentagon yeah it was wild which once again they are very lucky that this movie came out before in 2011

32:40 in 201 2011 2000 so they get back on the internet and they see that things are really not going well War Raymond and metal G rmon have been really beaten up by Goron and they're kind of lagging because all the emails com coming in it's like really making them lag yeah it's it's screwing up the internet connection on Izzy and taand so but War gmond says to keep the faith and we get a cameo from Yoli we do so this is Yoli's origin story mhm cuz we saw in Digimon Adventure 02 that Davis and his sister June were rounded up by motus Mon's goons mhm when he was hunting for the eighth child and that's kind of what faded Davis to predestin we also saw

33:27 that Cody was on the outside of all of the the fog that was surrounding Oda mhm but we know that Cody's father now had a special relationship with Digimon already when he was younger oh true so this must be what faded Yoli to become a Digi Destin when she saw the this battle mhm so diaboromon has multiplied by thousands and they have to find the original they have to find the original but it's going to take too long and things are not looking good and Tai almost like painfully is reaching out because he has to help war gaymond and this part always gets me always makes me cry Ty and Matt enter the internet almost is like a like an angel descending down to help more GMA and
