Brief Summary

The video documents the first week of a Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) thru-hike. It covers the initial miles from the Mexican border, detailing daily mileage, resupply stops in towns like Mount Laguna, Julian, and Warner Springs, and the challenges of desert hiking, including water scarcity and temperature fluctuations. The hiker reflects on the experience, the people met, and the landmarks passed, such as the 100-mile marker and Eagle Rock.

  • The journey begins at the Mexican border, heading north.
  • Encounters challenges like sunburn, cold nights, and water scarcity.
  • Resupply stops in Mount Laguna, Julian, and Warner Springs.
  • Reaches the 100-mile marker and Eagle Rock.
  • Completes the first week with 119 miles covered.

Day 1 & 2: Starting the PCT

The hiker starts his PCT journey from Camp Locket, near the Mexican border. He visits the official starting point, takes photos, and begins hiking north, still within sight of the border fence. On day two, he plans a shorter 12-mile hike, starting from Lake Marina Campground. He notes that his nose is already sunburnt. The initial plan was to hike 21 miles, but the intended campground is closed for the summer.

Day 3: Mount Laguna

The hiker plans to celebrate his birthday with lunch in Mount Laguna, aiming for a restaurant meal instead of typical backpacker food. He intends to hike about 8-9 miles to Mount Laguna for lunch and then continue another 6 miles to the Mount Laguna campground. He is currently at Cibbitz Flat Campground, mile 32.6. The landscape is starting to change.

Day 4: Cold Nights and Desert Views

The night was very cold, with temperatures dropping to 33°F (less than 1°C). He started early at 6:30 AM and aims to hike between 18.2 and 20.8 miles. He is walking on the side of a hill with a view of the Sultan Sea, though visibility is currently limited. The trail goes around a large rock formation. He ends the day with a view down to the desert floor.

Day 5: Julian Resupply

The hiker plans a half-day hike of 9 miles into Julian, starting around 7:00 AM. He looks forward to resupplying, showering, and relaxing in town. He resupplies, eats pie at Mom's Pie Shop, has lunch at the brewery, and camps at the Stage Coach RV Park, styled like an old west town.

Day 6: Scissors Crossing and Water Scarcity

The hiker covers 24 miles from Scissors Crossing, reaching the crossing around 7:30 AM, a bit later than planned due to waiting for a ride. The terrain was challenging, with constant elevation changes. The only water source for the day was at mile 14, a water cage maintained by the PCTA.

Day 7 & End of Week 1: Warner Springs

The hiker reaches the 100-mile marker and plans to visit Eagle Rock at mile 106. He heads into Warner Springs to resupply and charge devices. The next day involves a relatively flat climb from the campsite to Warner Springs, spending a couple of hours at the community center, followed by another 10 miles, with the last 5 miles being uphill, totaling about 18.4 miles. The plan for day eight is approximately 20 miles, leaving 10 miles to the Paradise Valley Cafe. The first week is over, with 119 miles covered.

0:00 Morning everyone. Day one on the PCT. Just leaving Camp Locket now where I camped last night at the PCT shuttle camp. It's about 700 m away from the start. So I've been up to the start this morning, taken the photos, put my foot in Mexico, and we're off. It's exciting to finally be here. Finally be on my way. still in sight of the border fence as you can see. There it is. Hard to believe that I'm actually looking at the hills of

0:49 Mexico. And here's Leven from South Carolina. So, day two and a shorter hike plan today. First 12 mi. As you can see, my nose is already sunburnt, which is a little bit disappointing. Leaving the Lake Marina Campground. The initial plan for me was I was going to do 21 mi today, but the campground I was hoping to get to hasn't opened for the summer yet. So, uh, hence the shorter day. [Music] Tomorrow is my birthday. I want to have lunch in Mount Lagona. I want to have something nice on my birthday. I think it's it's bit sad to eat three

1:36 backpacker meals for the day on your birthday. So, I'll have somewhere nice for lunch in the town and then keep going to the next campground, which will make it about 15 trail miles tomorrow and obviously the 7 back up to the trail. It's day three on the PCT. Camped last night at Cibbitz Flat Campground, mile 32.6. Today we're off to Mount Lagona in the morning, about an 8 mile hike, maybe 9, uh, where we'll stop for lunch and then in the afternoon to the Mount Laguna campground, which is a further 6 milesi. You can see now the landscape's

2:23 just starting to [Music] change. Ending the day on the trail here. I still got to walk to the campground, but ending here on this awesome view uh down to the desert floor. Um just [Music] incredible. Welcome to day four here on

3:11 the PCT. Cold night overnight. very cold. Um, maximum or minimum temperature was 33° F, so less than 1 C. Early started at about 6:30. We're about 2 mi in for the day. On our way hopefully somewhere between 18 2 and 20.8 miles. Not quite sure yet. Currently walking on the side of the hill with the Sultan Sea on my right. Can't see anything at the moment. There's a hill there. And in front of us there's quite a large uh rock massive which I'll show you in a

3:56 minute. Um we are going around it though. PCT doesn't go anywhere straight. It just goes around and around. And unlike climbing at home. All right. Uh, welcome to day [Music] four. Day five on the PCT. Just a half day today. 9 miles into Julian. We're about probably half a mile in this morning. It's about 7:00. [Music] Looking forward to getting to town,

4:42 resupplying, having a shower, and uh taking it easy for today. Resupplied. had some pie at mom's pie shop, lunch at the brewery, and then tonight we're camping at the stage coach RV park, which is sort of styled to be like an old west place where horses would be changed and people might stay overnight. It's

5:27 dry, hot, and fairly fairly quiet. Well, it's been a big day. 24 miles uh from Scissors Crossing. We'll have Scissors Crossing about 7:30, maybe an hour later than we'd hoped, but we had to wait for a ride. Um then from scissors crossing the land just folded in on itself pretty much all day. Went to the water cage at mile 14. That was the only water source for the day. So big thanks to the PCTA for putting

6:12 that there and maintaining it. And then this afternoon just the same [Music] really at the 100 mile marker. First landmark of the trail. First natural landmark tomorrow. Eagle Rock at about mile 106 and then into Warner Springs to resupply, charge a few things, and maybe uh given it's only about 9 miles, maybe get a lift up to the petrol station and some hot food for morning tea. Who knows? See you all tomorrow. So, that's the end of day

6:59 seven, end of the first week. Today we've climbed from campsite last night into Warner Springs. Actually, it was relatively flat. Wasn't much of a climb. I spent a couple hours at the community center at Warner Springs and then another 10 miles after that. Last 5 miles of which was uphill. So, all up about 18.4 miles. Tomorrow, day eight, planning approximately 20 miles, which will then leave us 10 miles to the Paradise Valley Cafe. And this stage, we're planning two half days around

7:46 uh going into the town of Idle Wild. [Music] So first week's over 119 miles covered and some good experiences. Met lots lots of good people [Music] and seen some interesting sites. So hopefully keep going again next week. Catch you all later.
